Muted and underwhelming
18 February 2010
Well, it's been a long time since I've been bored with a Pedro Almodovar movie but I guess they can't all be gems. 1995's The Flower of My Secret, actually, was his last movie that failed to overwhelm me, and even that one was more interesting.

I have to wonder if it's because I missed something(s). The story is unusually unbizarre, slightly twisty but definitely not as delightfully kooky as most of his other works. It just played like a soap opera.

Everything just seems muted, from the story, to the acting, to the cinematography. The only vibrancy were in the scenes of the movie within the movie - supposedly an imitation of Almodovar's famous Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown - in which the humor, the colors, and the actors were bright enough to be apropos for a typical Almodovar movie. If only this movie had been that movie. I hope he's back to form with his next feature.
