Linger (2008)
4/10
Well made, but the story is too familiar to engender any real interest, even with a great director at the helm

Warning: Spoilers
Seemingly rare recent misfire from director Johnnie To. Give the man points for mixing things up, but I really wish that when he did so he's pick better material.

The plot has a a young woman in love with, and carrying an affair with a man who has a fiancé. When they have a fight she drives off with her lover in pursuit. An accident occurs in which he is killed and she is put into a coma. Three years after waking up she and her doctor decide that its time to get her off all of her pills. Unfortunately she begins to see her dead lover everywhere. Is he a real ghost or is she just imagining it? The story isn't anything that we haven't seen before in any number of movies. The film is well made but the story kind of careens around trying to tell the story differently but never coming up with anything different other than the medication angle. Frankly if you've ever seen a film with a similar plot there really isn't a reason to see this film except to see a great director misstep, and as proof that even if a director missteps he can usually recover (this film came between the much better Mad Detective and The Sparrow.)

4 out of 10 (mostly because its so unremarkable)
