Portrait of a breakdown.
24 September 2006
Tight, short, almost minimalistic portrait of the American dream crumbling to pieces. The tragic fate of everyman Sam Bickes' failed life in the early '70s, is an extremely moving and gripping drama that has every ability of becoming a small classic. Peak performances add to its impact of the not-so-obvious empathetic understanding that Bicke is NOT an evil person... He's a man with basically good values, slowly slipping into madness. It also thankfully allows the viewer to figure many things out, about Bicke's past, for example. The details of Leonard Bernstein and his music integrated into the soundtrack is another stroke of genius. Finally, that scene in the Black Panthers' office is just unforgettable!
