This avoids getting a one via pure looks. The movie is quite nice looking in a sort of Hollywood fashion, and there's obviously a lot of money gone into it's production. It's unfortunate then that it was deemed we needed another rip-off of Wes Craven's Scream series as opposed to funnelling the budget off to a more interesting project.
What worries me about this movie is that despite my being a fairly hardcore horror nut and watching all kinds of garbage, this even annoyed the hell out of me. I hate to think what it's do to someone who'd never seen this kind of film. That said, the production values are high so Horror virgins might misguidedly think this is awesome and 'well scary'.
It isn't. It takes everything that was bad about the 90s slasher movie renaissance movies and bundles them together into some unholy rubber-band ball of mediocrity. The killer is lame, always an issue with the movies this is ripping off (he looks like he escaped from a salon or a particularly dull fetish party), the direction is so loose that the chance of anything resembling a scare is lost from minute one onwards, and the characters and plot are so pencil thin, stereotypical and derivative that it really must have been written on the legendary back of a cigarette packet.
Simply put, this movie embodies bad horror. It isn't scary, it's not well thought out, and it tries to compensate with violence. I might add that it doesn't even deliver there either, and most of the kills are startlingly unimaginative and pointlessly bloody to the point of stupidity. Normally these kinds of film go under the 'you may like it if you're a fan of the genre' but hey, I'm a genre fan and proud of it, and I hated it. Avoid. If you want a new off-kilter low-budget slasher to watch, check out Shredder or Scream Bloody Murder. They're much better than this tripe, and are actually fun with it.
