Review of Eulogy

Eulogy (2004)
5/10
Not nearly as funny as advertised
19 February 2005
I'm always skeptical when several obscure radio & TV critics' gushing reviews (hilarious! drop-dead funny! never lets up! insanely funny!) are featured on a film's poster. I love black comedy, and was thoroughly disappointed with the forced humor and hackneyed situations of "Eulogy." How many times was Ray Romano overlooked as an offspring? And how about telegraphing the lesbian relationship of Debra Winger? I saw that one coming 15 minutes into the film (after all, homophobes must be proved to be hypocrites, don't they?). And Hank Azaria's daughter didn't know he was a doper? Puhleeze! To be effective, humor must draw from the truth, and situations must be believable. For that reason, black comedy, along with its first cousin, theater of the absurd, has the hardest time succeeding. "Eulogy" doesn't.
