Mama's Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to Be Roger
11 December 2002
Greetings again from the darkness. Interesting story line, with teenage running off to learn the street side of the birds and bees from the black sheep uncle. Campbell Scott is just the perfect mixture of real life and sleeze to be believable as the all-knowing, life in shambles, quick tongue by profession, Roger. Jesse Eisenberg ("The Emperor's Club") is wonderful as the teenage Nick. He has remarkable screen presence in what otherwise is an adult level film. Best scenes BY FAR are at the table and in the park with the two males and Jennifer Beals and Elizabeth Berkley. The ladies provide more wisdom in a few minutes than Roger has been able to establish in his 30 something years. Still, Nick seems to learn, Roger doesn't. Isabella Rossellini adds a touch of class and power to the film as Roger's "boss". Writer/Director Dylan Kidd tries way too hard to make this a cool, place-to-be, kind of film. The handhelds are fine for the club and party, but how about giving us a chance to settle our stomachs in the other scenes?
