St. John's Wort--not the best title for a horror film. Actually, it doesn't seem very fitting for this movie anyway, but that's beside the point. St. John's Wort is another offering from Asia that I had heard good things about. I don't agree with the hype however as the direction is very uncanny and marvelous at times, the story crawls along at a snail's pace. It's very much like a video game (and according to the box it's based on a playstation game but I've never heard of it). The characters in the film are exploring a spooky mansion that one of them inherited. They go room to room examining certain elements (like paintings) and finding certain items (like keys) that lead them on deeper into the house. It was a nice touch. But the film never picks up. The really creepy ending involving a character carving out their own eyes would have made the film so much better but then they continue with a different ending that was totally uncalled for. St. John's Wort is another victim of all style and no substance.
