Could have been so much better
2 September 2003
This movie had the potential to be a real thoughtful story about the inability to escape one's past. Regardless of its lineage from the earlier (better) movies it's based on, this one should have been able to hold its own. It has all the elements, even some great camera work and acting - Walken is always good, about as close to a lock for a great performance in a character part as there is. But this movie lacks a center. Bruce Willis is good in the part, but there are some missed opportunities with him. The script lets him - and the rest of the cast - down. Most every character is either stupid and clueless or else we're missing something. A very lame and ineffective voiceover does not help.

However, I liked the action and appreciated the beautiful brutality for what it was. A gunplay-movie very nicely done, but an opportunity wasted for a quality movie.

I also have to say that the detuned bass musical score by Ry Cooder is nothing short of awesome. See it for that alone - it's that good.
