The Lathe of Heaven (1980 TV Movie)

A gorgeous, memorable film.

I can't imagine the suffering of the people who had to wait 20 years to get a second viewing. I was so enamored of this little miracle that I had to watch it again right away after my first exposure. Bruce Davison is mesmerizing as the vulnerable, sympathetic hero, and Kevin Conway is fascinating as the "Bad Guy" who isn't really BAD. The best scenes in the film are when these two men interact solely with each other. You can see George go from a psychological mess to a man with a surprising strength of will, while Doctor Haber becomes less interested in helping George with his problems and more interested in using him to change the world...with or without George's consent.

The special effects are not as bad as I've been told and they don't really distract from the story. The lighting that sets the mood for the film was born out of thrift, but I don't think anyone could have done a more beautiful job even with unlimited resources. Wonderful acting all around despite a slightly nebulous ending. Don't be surprised if you find yourself wondering if you could have done better in either character's place, or paying closer attention to your dreams right after you see this film.
