Film plays like a "Goosebumps" tale...But fun
29 August 1999
I remember watching this in 5th grade. I thought it was a fun show. But, last night, I saw it again on TV for the first time in 5 years. Now that I'm older, I see that the "children's" movie has some devilish hints to it. Such quotes as "Candy is Dandy, but Liquor is Quicker" and "Well, the furnace only lights every other day, so they might survive"

made me wonder if Willy Wonka *really* liked kids.

Personally, I didn't like the Oompa Loompas either. THEIR basic message is that if children don't behave, they should be disposed of. Now, isn't that a bit mean-spirited for this kind of movie? What's going on here? Makes you wonder just what happened to all those children taken away by the Oompa Loompas. Maybe that's just Gene Wilder humor, but if it is, then he shouldn't have been cast for this innocent, child-loving role.

No matter. Despite all this, it's a fun movie and I liked the Grandpa.
