When social platforms reach a certain size, there’s something akin to a gravitational pull compelling individuals in charge to want to produce original programming.
It makes sense on paper: You’re an online video sharing site or a social media network that’s basically 100% composed of user-generated and professional content that’s coming from individuals and entities outside of your organization. Those users and professionals could go to many other places to upload their content. They often do! And entire businesses have been built to facilitate them doing so.
But you get jealous easily and you don’t want viewers doing things on other platforms. You want the viewers to watch all the things on your platform.

Dragun, a transgender beauty YouTuber and model, was taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct, misdemeanor battery, and felony battery on a police officer after an altercation at The Goodtime Hotel in Miami Beach, Fla.

How do you turn the latest crop of social media influencers – many with tens of millions of followers – into traditional television stars? That’s been the question that networks and producers have been asking for years.
It’s also the question that Wheelhouse Entertainment, the business created by Leftfield Entertainment founder Brent Montgomery, thinks it has found the answer to via its recently launched digital DNA division.
The unit, overseen by Wheelhouse Chief Strategy Officer and Montgomery lieutenant Ed Simpson, is working with a slew of social media stars such as the kids behind Los Angeles’ Hype House, David Dobrik and beauty influencer Nikita Dragun.
It is working with these youngsters to build businesses outside of their phones and ultimately become household names.
Simpson told Deadline that five years ago it tried to bring a number of social stars into the linear ecosystem. “We did that really early on in cable and broadcasting.

Snapchat is doubling down on docuseries and unscripted originals, it revealed at its Advertising Week presentation.
The platform has now released more than 100 original shows, and says it currently has dozens of new series in development. So far in 2020, its shows have collectively reached 75% of the U.S.-based Gen Z population, and Snapchat as a whole has reached 90% of U.S.-based 13 to 24-year-olds, it added.
Snap also doled out viewership figures for recent notable programming: Will Smith’s quarantine-time talk show Will from Home brought more than 35 million unique viewers; YouTuber Nikita Dragun’s Nikita Unfiltered has drawn 22 million viewers since debuting in March; and YouTuber Summer McKeen’s Endless, which was Snapchat’s very first docuseries, has brought in 38 million viewers since season one premiered in 2018.

YouTube has canceled “Escape the Night” after four seasons, ending its longest-running original series, Variety has confirmed. The semi-scripted murder-mystery series was hosted by Joey Graceffa, who presided over the retro mega-collab in which a famous YouTuber got killed off in each episode.
But Graceffa isn’t letting “Escape the Night” fade to black.
In a video posted Tuesday, he said Season 5 of the show was not happening “this year” but he left the door open for the series to return (which would be under different auspices now that YouTube has dropped it). “I don’t know when there will be a Season 5,” Graceffa said, saying it was unable to go forward because Covid-19 production shutdowns.
Graceffa didn’t say that “Escape the Night” was canceled. However, a source tells Variety that YouTube declined to pick up “Etn” Season 5.

Slash Management, a firm that reps digital luminaries like YouTube beauty entrepreneur Nikita Dragun and TikTok star Collins Onosike, has added Ashley ‘StrashMe’ Strong to its roster.
Strong is the winner of James Charles’ beauty vlogger competition series Instant Influencer, which was produced by YouTube Originals. In addition to being a hit for Charles, the show has supercharged the careers of contestants -- perhaps most notably Strong, a single mom from Alaska who gained 1 million followers across all of her social media platforms during the show’s four-week run, beginning April 24.
On her YouTube channel, Strong now counts 647,000 subscribers -- a stunning increase over the 24,000 subscribers that she counted on the day before the show's premiere. In the month of May, Strong also clocked a whopping 6.7 million views -- a huge uptick over the 398,000 views that she netted in April.

Snapchat has launched several shiny new ad products on the heels of reporting encouraging revenues and user growth last quarter -- thanks, in no small part, due to coronavirus quarantining.
First up is First Commercial, which -- aptly -- enables advertisers to purchase the first commercial that users see when they tune into Snapchat’s original programming, Social Media Today reports. This is an increasingly valuable spot, given that Snapchat most recently reported total daily time spent in its 'Discover' section -- which houses original content -- has increased 35% year-over-year. Recent hits include Nikita Dragun’s Nikita Unfiltered and Will Smith’s Will From Home, which have garnered 20 and 15 million views, respectively, within a matter of weeks.
Search Engine Today notes that the First Commercial spot is a premium spot targeting high-end brands.

Snap reported highly encouraging revenues and user growth yesterday, due in no small part to social distancing and lockdown protocols amid the coronavirus pandemic. Wall Street liked the company’s latest quarterly earnings report so much that shares in the company rose 20% yesterday, Reuters reports.
All told, Snapchat's daily active users rose 20% year-over-year to 229 million in Q1 2020. Last quarter, Snapchat reported 218 million daily active users, and analysts were projecting 225 million for its most recent report, according to Reuters, which it exceeded. Additionally, revenues increased 44% year-over-year to $462.47 million last quarter, Snap said -- though growth in Jan. and Feb. was offset by tightened ad spending in March, when the coronavirus began to wallop the states in a broader sweep.
In addition to using Snapchat as a communication tool amid quarantining, the company said viewership of original content and use of its in-app games also increased. Nikita Dragun, for instance, a...

Like countless YouTubers before her, beauty vlogger Nikita Dragun is throwing her hat into the cosmetics business -- though the 23-year-old’s self-owned brand arrives with something of a twist.
Dragun Beauty, as the line is called, differs from predecessors in that it caters to transgender users -- as well as all makeup wearers, Dragun says. For her part, Dargun has chronicled her own gender transition on YouTube over the years, nabbing 2.1 million subscribers in the process.
Products will come housed in a purple egg, Women’s Wear Daily reports, and were inspired by Dragun's own journey of harnessing makeup in order to feminize her face. “I’ve always been obsessed with the art of transformation,” she told the outlet. “As an artist, I was more obsessed with how makeup could change your face and that you could be the architect of your own beauty. ”

Fine Brothers Entertainment (Fbe), the digital media firm founded by YouTube luminaries Benny and Rafi Fine, has acquired Officially Penned -- an upstart that creates collectible pins in collaboration with top creators.
Officially Pinned was founded last spring by digital vet Max Benator and the Brooklyn-based artist Andrew Shuta. The company has since collaborated with 16 YouTubers to vend their own enamel pins, including Shane Dawson, Eva Gutowski, ASAPScience, Justine Ezarik, Kingsley, and Nikita Dragun.
The pin purveyor has created a total of 34 designs to date -- including Dawson sipping on root beer and a pink iPhone touting Ezarik’s ‘iJustine’ channel moniker -- and is ramping up its output with 10 launches slated to arrive in the next month alone. In addition to its creator-sanctioned pins, Officially Pinned also vends proprietary designs inspired by internet culture, like a rainbow donut and a recreation of the infamous World Record Egg. Nikita Dragun is taking on Victoria’s Secret.
The transgender beauty vlogger -- who boasts 1.9 million YouTube subscribers, 3.3 million Instagram followers, and 436,000 Twitter followers -- shared her own Victoria's Secret-style ad on social media yesterday. The clip sees the 22-year-old striding through a glitzy set, bedecked in lingerie and wearing wings reminiscent of the brand's signature 'angels.'
“Dear Victoria’s Secret, you said trans women can’t sell the ‘fantasy,’ so here I am as a trans woman selling the fantasy,” she tweeted with the 35-second video.
Dragun is referring to comments made last month by Ed Razek, chief marketing officer for L Brands (Victoria’s Secret’s parent company). In an interview with Vogue, Razek said Victoria’s Secret had looked at including both transgender women and plus-size women in its lengthy annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and had decided against doing so.

Veteran actor Richard Kind dove into the convoluted world of memes and YouTube stardom in his first assignment as “Senior Youth Correspondent” for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
In a pre-taped segment, Kind explored VidCon, an annual gathering of YouTube stars and social media influencers. His report got off to a rousing, age-appropriate start as he scolded a group of kids for playing in a germ-infested ball pit. Kind then tried to figure out what it takes to go viral and found himself coerced into both the cinnamon challenge and learning how to floss.
