Three years before his career-defining role as Itto Ogami in the six Lone Wolf and Cub films, Wakayama Tomisaburô starred in a trio of films about doctor, bounty hunter, and sometimes shogun assassin Ichibei Shikoro. Where the Lone Wolf and Cub series leaned much harder into the strategies associated with the exploitation filmmaking movement that was booming in Japan during the early 1970s, the “Bounty Hunter” trilogy has both feet firmly planted in the 1960s, drawing influence from James Bond films and spaghetti westerns as well more violent contemporaneous samurai films such as Okamoto Kihachi’s Sword of Doom and Kill!
The influence of the 007 films on Killer’s Mission, from 1969, alone is evident right out of the gate, both in Yagi Masao’s score and our first glimpse of Ichibei preparing his gadgets, including a cane sword and a miniature crossbow, as he readies himself for his mission to prevent an enemy,...

The 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament demonstrates a rising trend of sports simulcasts. Can alternate broadcasts help streamers differentiate?
Even for casual sports fans, it’s hard to ignore the number of options you have for watching just one sporting event these days. Take the 2024 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments, for example. The national championship game on the men’s side will air on TNT, TBS, and stream on Max, while the women’s championship will be broadcast on ABC and streamed on ESPN+. Sports rightsholders are doing their best to meet fans wherever they are, and as customers struggle to find which channel or streamer is carrying which sport a new question for providers comes into focus: how do they differentiate themselves from the competition as sports games become more available in more places? One popular way that broadcasters have increasingly embraced in recent years is the alternate broadcast.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’ summer in Hawaii circa 1977 might just be among the most fortuitous vacays in movie history. One of the Hollywood young gun directors was dejected during this holiday because he’d just been passed over to helm the next James Bond picture; the other was anxious about his new film opening that weekend—a little flick you might have heard of called Star Wars. Neither was entirely certain what he’d do next, but the pair got to talking about an idea Lucas had been kicking around for years. It would be inspired by all the B-serials they grew up watching; it would be way cooler than 007; and it starred a guy named Smith, Indiana Smith.
The concept was almost there, clearly, yet it would take both filmmakers, plus a legion of collaborators, to turn Indiana Jones into the cinema legend he is today. And a legend he is,...

"Bones" fans will surely recall that "Angela Montenegro" was not the birth name of the character played by actress Michaela Conlin. The origin of her true full birth name was one of the show's longest-running mysteries, and showrunner Hart Hanson and the "Bones" writers held onto that secret until the 10th season's 21st episode, "The Life in the Light," where it was revealed that "Angela" was actually born with a far more ... unusual name: Pookie Noodlin Pearly-Gates Gibbons.
That delightfully unconventional name makes a little more sense when you remember that Billy F. Gibbons, the guitarist and lead singer of rock band Zz Top, played Angela's father on the show, and he was essentially playing a heightened version of himself. But the writers took things a step further and embedded a hidden reference into the relationship between Gibbons and Angela that only hardcore Zz Top fans would know.

Series director Declan Lowney recently spoke with Awards Radar about the possibility fans might see further series spun from the world of “Ted Lasso”.
“Jason [Sudekis] always said it was three seasons, he’s wrapped everybody’s stories up very nicely,” Lowney explained. “But there’s a whole bunch of things aren’t there that have been set up in the last montage in the last few minutes that are potential spin-offs.”
In fact, Lowney revealed that he has ideas for four potential “Ted Lasso” spin-offs that could continue the storylines of various characters from the series.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house among the full cast and crew on the last day of filming Ted Lasso‘s season three. The shot was in the fictional Richmond Fc locker room before its championship game against rival West Ham — and before beloved coach Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis (who’s nominated for lead actor and writing in addition to comedy series), was scheduled to return to the U.S. Instead of his usual pep talk, Lasso introduces a video, looking back at the team’s growth. “The tears are real,” says Declan Lowney, who directed this episode and eight others during the three seasons of the 11-time Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series. (Its 10 noms this year include nods to most of the talent mentioned in this story.) Famously based on a 2013 NBC Sports promo, Sudeikis’ depiction of an American college football coach who moves to...

This story about the Emmy-nominated songs first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In the Emmys’ Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category, it pays to be funny. After all, this is the category where the winners include “Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “It’s Not Just for Gays Anymore” from the Tony Awards, “Dick in a Box” from “Saturday Night Live” and, um, “I’m F—ing Matt Damon” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Over the past two decades, comedic songs have won more than two-thirds of the time. Most years, they’ve landed the majority of the nominations.
This year, four of the six nominees are from comedies: “Fought & Lost” and “A Beautiful Game” from “Ted Lasso,” “Your Personal Trash Man Can” from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Now You Know” from the TV movie “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Not to be confused with the Spanish road trip horror of the same name, The Passenger, the new film from Carter Smith, opens with a woman, blood spurting from her eye socket crawling towards a young boy. It’s a nightmare and Randy is woken from it to start another tedious day at Burgers, Burgers, Burgers. He should have taken it as an omen and stayed home.
As they’re getting the diner ready to open one of the other employees starts harassing him, something that seems to be a regular occurrence. Benson watches in disgust before walking out to have a smoke. Then, as if something just snapped he pulls a shotgun from his car and goes back inside killing everyone except Randy whom he takes hostage.

The Passenger by Carter Smith delves into the depths of human psychology and confronts the subject of violence. Through the central characters of the film, Randy and Benson, the film examines contrasting human responses to violence. Benson’s psychopathic tendencies lead him to believe in using violence as a means of power, while Randy’s ability to endure insults makes him aim to establish peace. Despite their different approaches, both characters inadvertently contribute to the escalation of violence in the world. The Passenger serves as a mirror to the complexities of human behavior and the various ways people react to violence. By presenting these two extreme possibilities, it prompts viewers to reflect on their own responses to conflict and the implications of such actions.
Spoilers Ahead
The Passenger commenced with a haunting sequence in which a little child appeared utterly terrified while looking at his teacher, who was bleeding from the eye.

Picture if you will, a world in which someone would say no to Steven Spielberg. After all, the guy changed cinema with 1975’s Jaws, creating the summer blockbuster, earning tons of money, and getting a Best Director nomination. But that’s exactly what happened, several times when Spielberg begged producer Cubby Broccoli to let him make a movie about his childhood hero, James Bond. But after numerous rejections, Spielberg’s best bud George Lucas came to him with another idea: a movie about an adventurer called Indiana Jones.
Spielberg’s James Bond Mission
It’s no surprise that Spielberg loves James Bond. As anyone who saw The Fabelmans can tell you, the director developed his remarkable cinematic sense not by going to film school but by replicating the images of movies he saw at the local suburban theaters. And few movies of that formative era were bigger in the minds...

Over the weekend, "The Bear" viewers on social media separated into two camps: people who ship Sydney and Carmy - that is, want them to be together romantically - and people who don't. The latter are pretty mad that anyone is in the first group to begin with. Off the top, I'll come clean that I am also anti-Sydney-Carmy romance. While Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White have incredible chemistry, I think the show is about how their connection comes to life in the restaurant instead of in a romantic context.
However, as the weekend and discourse went on, I found myself mentally defending Sydney-Carmy shippers. Some said that to watch the show and hope for the characters to get together romantically is to watch wrong. Shipping two characters, they said, means your brain is poisoned by romance. But the problem, I think, is not that people are silly for...

Liza Weil also stars. “She plays Miss Beard, Randall’s first-grade teacher who lost an eye after a classroom accident. She finds herself keeping Randall safe as she’s dragged into Benson’s destructive mission.”
The Passenger is written by Jack Stanley.
The Passenger is executive produced by Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, and Jeremy Gold for Blumhouse TV, and Lauren Downey.

On the long list of “Ted Lasso” creators, it can be easy to overlook the name of Brendan Hunt. The multi-talented artist plays the equally reticent and wacky Coach Beard on “Lasso,” and recently sat down with the Los Angeles Times to offer his thoughts on the future of Apple TV+’s flagship series, among other topics.
7-Day Free Trial $6.99 / month apple.com So, Is ‘Ted Lasso’ Over or Not?
Hunt told the Times that Apple CEO Tim Cook had been to visit the set while Season 3 was in production, and told everyone there he “sure hope[d] there’s a Season 4.” Hunt said that Cook’s message in relaying those words was very clear and that when the boss tells you what he wants, it’s wise to at least give it consideration.

Having covered this business for a while, I’ve written several stories over the years about pilot and series recastings, and it always strikes me as one of the cruelest moments for anyone to experience in this business.
Imagine you’ve been given a role in a pilot: The exciting news appears in the trades, you film the episode and take the cast publicity photos. Then your show is picked up! But there’s a caveat: Your role is being re-shot with a new actor. Devastating! Cue sad trombone sound effect.
That’s why I like these kinds of stories better: The background actors, guest stars and recurring actors who eventually graduate to series regular status thanks to sheer persistence and talent. That’s the case this season for “Ted Lasso” standout James Lance, who plays Trent Crimm — formerly of The Independent, now just independent — on the show.

The Season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso” left fans with many burning questions, some of which Emmy Award winner and 2021 acting nominee Brendan Hunt tried to answer last week during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session.
“I’M Here, Baby! Before I launch in – thank you, from all of us who have worked on this show, for your eyes and your emotions and your support,” Hunt, who co-created the show and stars as Coach Beard, wrote on June 1. “We never imagined a tv show about soccer, on a streaming service that didn’t exactly exist yet, could ever have been so fortunate as to have this kind of following. We Appreciate You All.”
One of the bigger dangling threads left behind in the closing moments of the third season finale – much of which plays like a possible series finale – was the status of Beard’s friendship with Ted Lasso himself (Jason Sudeikis...

Ted Lasso star and co-creator Brendan Hunt is answering several burning questions that were left unanswered by the season (series?) finale last week.
Hunt took to Reddit for an Ask Me Anything thread and spent some time providing responses to fan questions about everything from a possible relationship between Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) to the chances of a spinoff or fourth season.
“We don’t know,” the Coach Beard actor wrote about whether or not there’s a chance for more stories in the Ted Lasso universe. “We need a break and will take one presently. Nothing has been ruled out, everything is possible; but that includes the possibility that we’re done. We won’t know until we’ve sat with it for a while, decompressed, etc.”

The question on everyone's mind is what's going on with "Ted Lasso"? Season three ended with an extra-long final episode on May 31 that sees Ted (Jason Sudeikis) return to America and reunite with his son. But the rest of the AFC Richmond gang stay behind in London, continuing their lives that revolve around the beloved football team.
Though "Ted Lasso"'s cast and creator have acted as if season three is the final lap for the series - especially after their farewell-esque finale - Apple has not yet confirmed the latest episode as the series finale. Lots of fans are wondering if "Ted Lasso" will one day return for a season four or if the show could have a potential spinoff. On June 6, Apple TV+ shared a photo of Roy (Brett Goldstein), Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), and Nate (Nick Mohammed) from the end of the finale in their new coaching...

Ted Lasso and Rebecca Welton lived happily ever after… just not with each other.
In the Apple TV+ comedy’s presumed series finale, Ted returned to Kansas to take a more active role in Henry’s life, while Rebecca formed a family of her own with the Dutchman and his daughter. But many a rom-communist wanted Ted and Rebecca to wind up together, and were let down when they went their separate ways.

Is Apple toying with us?
A tweet went out this morning that suggests a new coaching team that’s made up of Beard (Brendan Hunt), Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) and Nathan (Nick Mohammed) could be in the works for a season four or spinoff of Ted Lasso. To add to the mystery, Mohammed responded with an emoji suggesting that he was keeping his lips zipped.

This post contains spoilers for the season 3 finale of "Ted Lasso."
The third season of "Ted Lasso" has been called an endurance test, but for those who endured, the protracted, 660-minute season (and possibly series) is now finally over. It ended with an episode entitled, "So Long, Farewell," and never mind the musical number of that name (inspired by "The Sound of Music"), because I prefer to read that title without the comma, as if even the creators of "Ted Lasso" realized this season was so long.
One of the more polarizing subplots in "Ted Lasso" season 3 was the redemption of Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammed), who made a heel turn at the end of season 2, only to get a girlfriend, turn around on his other heel, and suddenly become a nice guy again. /Film's Ben Pearson called Nate's season 3 arc "a catastrophic storytelling decision from which the show never recovered.

Another week, another sus death to investigate, on Apple TV’s Silo!
In the wake of Sims pitching Trumbull over a railing, Juliette and Billings in Episode 6 searched the Judicial grunt’s apartment, after the sheriff forced her way in with a crowbar. There, Billings discovered inside a kitchen cabinet the odd relic that we at home in the year 2023 know to be a duck-headed Pez dispenser — just like the one George gave Juliette. Hmmm.

In a turn of events no one saw coming — yes, that would be sarcasm — it looks as though the team behind our beloved "Ted Lasso" is changing their tune on the future of the series following the season 3 finale.
Brendan Hunt, a writer on the series who also plays the enigmatic Coach Beard, participated in a Reddit Ama on June 1, in which a fan asked him, "What is the most ambiguous way you can answer the 'Season 4? Spin-off?' questions?"
Naturally, the performer showed up with the most apt answer, but one that holds a lot of promise. He wrote, "My pat answer, that is also 100% true: We don't know. We need a break and will take one presently. Nothing has been ruled out, everything is possible; but that includes the possibility that we're done. Ted Lasso fans can rest assured that the flash-forward sequence at the end of the series finale wasn’t all a dream and did, in fact, happen, so, yes, Coach Beard’s wedding to Jane (Phoebe Walsh) did go ahead. The show’s co-creator Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard on the hit sitcom, cleared things up during a Reddit Ama (Ask Me Anything) tied to Wednesday’s (May 31) finale. “In the final episode of season 3, is the Beard & Jane wedding a dream sequence of Ted’s? Or is it real?” one fan asked, referring to the quick flash-forward scenes which culminate in Ted (Jason Sudeikis) waking up on his transatlantic flight. Hunt kept his answer short and to the point, simply responding, “Real.” He did, however, go into more detail about why Ted wasn’t in attendance at the Beard and Jane wedding. “There are a few reasons,” he explained.

No, it wasn’t all a dream.

The question on the mind of all Ted Lasso fans, and some of its stars, is will there be a Season 4 or any spin-offs of the Apple TV+ series.
Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard in the Warner Bros. Television-produced series, is the latest to respond.
“My pat answer, that is also 100% true: We don’t know. We need a break and will take one presently. Nothing has been ruled out, everything is possible; but that includes the possibility that we’re done. The show’s third season ended earlier this week and most people have assumed it was a series finale, as part of a grand plan of three seasons.
[Spoiler Alert]
The season finale – So Long, Farewell – wrapped up things nicely with Jason Sudekis’ titular character heading back to Kansas.

This post contains spoilers for "Ted Lasso" season 3.
The third and presumably final season of "Ted Lasso" was a complete mess. Sure, it had a few nice moments: Jamie and Roy forging a friendship (which was inexplicably marred in the finale), Rebecca meeting that random Dutch guy, Trent Crimm being welcomed into the Diamond Dogs, Colin coming out to his teammates. But so much of the rest of the season was the result of sloppy storytelling, where several significant plot beats happened totally off camera and extended episode runtimes stretched underwhelming storylines to the breaking point.
But amid a number of missteps and stumbles, one terrible decision towers over the rest. In my eyes, the biggest mistake the "Ted Lasso" writers made in the third season was how it handled Nate, AFC Richmond's former kitman who became a full-fledged villain in the season 2 finale.

Minor spoiler alert: Ted Lasso‘s Season 3 finale confirmed that Coach Beard’s first name is Willis. We say confirmed, not revealed, because the series already revealed Beard’s first name in Season 2. We just didn’t know it yet.
Ted first referred to Beard as Willis in Season 2, Episode 1, “Goodbye Earl.” Only then his first name was “hidden” in a classic sitcom reference — more specifically, a Diff’rent Strokes reference. During an unofficial meeting of the Diamond Dogs, Ted turned to Beard and channeled his inner Gary Coleman when he asked: “What you talkin’ about, Willis?”

Big spoilers for the season 3 finale of "Ted Lasso" to follow.
From the beginning, "Ted Lasso" gave us a great blend of sports drama, an underdog narrative, and an absurd fish-out-of-water story of an American football coach teaching actual football, despite not even knowing what an off-side is. This worked wonderfully, combining British and American sensibilities, and mining great comedy and drama out of the cultural clash between the two.
Though the show was never really about football — instead about the self-betterment of the team and its coach — there were still great moments of sports bliss throughout. We had excellent football plays like Richmond being promoted to the Premier League, Dani Rojas scoring a goal after a devastating mistake in season 2, Zava's incredibly over-the-top plays, or Jamie Tartt's extraordinary tiki-taka passes against Manchester City.

[This conversation contains spoilers for the third season finale of Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, which may or may not be the series finale. Who really knows?]
Daniel Fienberg: One of my favorite things to do before a series finale is to go back and revisit the show’s pilot. Bringing your story full circle isn’t mandatory, and plenty of shows barely acknowledge their pilots or much of anything from their series runs — and that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad pieces of storytelling.
Ahead of this week’s third series finale for Ted Lasso, I didn’t go back to rewatch the pilot. There were two reasons for that, both practical: First, episodic runtimes this season have been so expansive — 660 minutes total for 12 episodes, or the equivalent of more than 31 episodes of a standard broadcast comedy — that I barely finished last week’s episode before this week’s episode began. Second, Apple TV+ has perplexingly resisted making any announcements regarding the show’s long-term fate. Is this the end of Ted Lasso’s...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the Season 3 finale of Ted Lasso.
Apple’s hit comedy series Ted Lasso wrapped up its third season on Tuesday night and quite possibly the series as we’ve come to know it. But no matter what happens in the future, Hannah Waddingham is proud of all she accomplished as Rebecca Welton and how things ended for her character.
As we revealed in our recap, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) helps AFC Richmond win big against West Ham —mission complete. He moves forward with his plans to return to Kansas to reunite with his son Henry leaving Rebecca and most of the team in tears. But life goes on, as it does, and everything works out as it should.
In the final moments of the episode, Rebecca was departing the airport sad after saying goodbye to Ted when she spots a young girl running outside of the terminal.

This post contains spoilers for "Ted Lasso" season 3.
"Ted Lasso" season 3 has just come to an end, leaving the fictional team of AFC Richmond at a crossroads after their head coach leaves his fish-and-chips-out-of-water life in London behind. Overall, the supposedly last season of the Apple TV+ phenomenon left a lot to be desired, failing to live up to the high points of the first two seasons where the jokes that hit far outweighed the ones that fell flat. While a lot of the episodes in season 3 felt overly long and unnecessarily melodramatic, the overall spirit of the show managed to stay intact thanks to Jason Sudeikis' naively positive "aw shucks" attitude as Ted.
Ted isn't only a sports fan, he's a pop culture aficionado raised on Thursday night primetime sitcoms from the '80s. Throughout its entire run, "Ted Lasso" has peppered in a number of clever references to the golden years of U.

The finale of “Ted Lasso” Season 3 had viewers feeling some type of way.
Whether it be sadness over the possibility that the show is truly over for good or anger at how certain relationships closed out at the end of the season, fans have gotten as vocal as the AFC Richmond crowd, and maybe even Manchester City in some cases!
“Ted Lasso! Inspiring, emotional, frustrating, loving, funny! You experience every emotion under the sun, and I have to say one of the best shows ever!” fan Shaun Winter wrote. “What a truly brilliant program! I pray they make more @TedLasso.”
Jack Benjamin wrote a tweet sharing the same sentiment.
“As the late, great Jim Valvano said: We need to laugh, think and cry every day. The show did that in each episode,” he said.

It’s the end of the road for “Ted Lasso” and AFC Richmond as it all came to life on the Apple TV+ comedy from Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, and Bill Lawrence.
Or is it?
Apple has stayed vague about whether it was the Emmy-winning series’ final outing, despite public, bittersweet sentiment from the cast and near-constant speculation since well before Season 3’s March premiere. As recently as the morning of the finale, titled “So Long, Farewell,” a publicist underscored to IndieWire that Season 3 had not been confirmed as final. Along with the episode, Apple is now streaming a six-minute, 38 second goodbye video from the cast.
Episode 312 itself ties up the season’s big questions (“arcs” is generous), with Ted (Sudeikis) on his way home, Nate (Nick Muhammed) back at Richmond, Roy (Brett Goldstein) taking over as team manager, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) meeting a man and never having problems again,...

This post contains spoilers for the Ted Lasso season finale, “So Long, Farewell.”
During what certainly seems to be the final episode of Ted Lasso, reporter Trent Crimm reads a note Ted has written him regarding Trent’s book about his season with AFC Richmond, which Trent has titled The Lasso Way. “One small suggestion,” Ted writes. “I’d change the title. It’s not about me. It never was.”
The sentiment works as something wholly true to Ted and the philosophy he has espoused over the comedy’s three seasons.

"Ted Lasso" mastered the pop culture reference. Unlike many shows, which immediately date themselves by referencing recent pop culture landmarks and feel forced when they do so, "Ted Lasso" found a way to naturally insert references in its dialogue, and into its scripts.
The characters love to talk about what they like, and more importantly, they get very excited when that love is shared by others. Despite the problems in season three — its double-sized episode lengths and unfocused story — the season gave us several all-time great "Ted Lasso" moments and storylines, like Colin's coming out speech, or the fact that Jamie Tartt and Roy Kent became the best parts of the show. Whether this is actually the end or we get to see more of AFC Richmond, this show has been a true gift.
One of the things I will miss the most about "Ted Lasso" is its references, because...

Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers from the series finale of “Ted Lasso,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Here’s a scoop: There will be a fourth season of “Ted Lasso.” Actually, it has already aired, and it was not great.
“Ted Lasso” grew out a character created by Jason Sudekis and friends for NBC Premier League promos, a Kansas City-based football coach who somehow finds himself coaching the other football in London for AFC Richmond, a chronically downtrodden franchise. It’s a typical fish-out-of water premise, which is a classic comedy trope, but comes with some limitations — namely, when the fish becomes an amphibian and begins to love land life. Mindful of those constraints, “Lasso” debuted in 2020 to acclaim, with critics lauding its cock-eyed optimism as the world struggled with a deadly pandemic. Season 1’s 10 episodes ran an average of 30 minutes apiece, totaling 299 minutes for the season.
