Exclusive: Activist Artists Management has signed Chilean actress Renata González Spralja (The Wave) for representation, with Bernie Cahill and Justin Deanda to run point for the new client.

Produced by Pablo Larraín’s Fabula, the film inspired by a true story from 2018 tells the story of a Chilean student who gets involved in a feminist movement on her university. Suddenly, she finds herself becoming a central figure in the movement.
Previously, Spralja worked with Larraín and Fabula on Llévame al Cielo (Take Me to Heaven), the first Chilean Disney+ series, which is slated for release worldwide this year. While you’ve been waiting nearly two decades for a new T Bone Burnett album, he’s been “Waiting for You,” or so he sings on the lead single for his upcoming LP, The Other Side. “Waiting for you so long, I’ve been waiting for you,” he sings over acoustic guitar and sighing sounds that could be either steel guitar or vocalizations by the women of Lucius, who features on the song. It’s a melancholy song full of yearning, with a little Spanish guitar flare, setting a gentle tone for the record,...

Matty Healy deactivated his Twitter account after apparently drawing the ire of Lucy Dacus by posting an ignorant, ableist joke on the social media platform.
In a since-deleted tweet posted to the account @mattyfrnglomg (which is believed to belong to Healy), the singer wrote: “I told Lucy Dacus that ‘Boygenius’ had inspired me and [drummer] George [Daniel] to start a new band called ‘Girlretard’. I don’t really hear from her that often.”
After invoking her supergroup trio, Dacus set the record straight on the frequency of her correspondence with Healy by replying, “you don’t hear from me at all.” In a separate tweet, Healy issued one last message in retreat, saying “Yeah this never goes well does it” before deactivating the account. See Dacus’ still-standing burn below.
While Healy’s outspoken comments have historically ranged from well-intentioned but misguided to flagrantly insensitive, his latest veered heavily toward the latter.

With October just around the corner, Weyes Blood is getting into the Halloween spirit with the eerie and ghastly new video for “Twin Flame.”
Directed by Ambar Navarro, the clip hearkens back to old school fantasy and gothic horror flicks. It opens with an animated sequence in which a man rides away from a castle in the middle of the night. It then switches to live-action, with Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering playing the woman left behind, left to wander this creepy castle, while her dark-side doppelgänger also stalks the halls.

The Strokes invited Regina Spektor on-stage for a rare rendition of their 2004 collaboration “Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men” at Queens, New York’s Forest Hills Stadium on Saturday.
The reunion was not only notable for its meeting of two cherished hometown acts, but also the live revival of the duet that first appeared as a b-side on the 2004 “Reptilia” single. The Strokes and Spektor last performed the song in-concert at New York’s The Theater at Madison Square Garden in 2003.
“It only took 20 years but look who showed up,” The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas teased as Spektor stepped up to the mic. “They love you, kid.”
Spektor answered the crowd’s uproarious approval by shouting, “My favorite band in my favorite city!” Then, gauging their palpable anticipation, Casablancas added, “Y’all know the song” before diving in. Watch the homecoming performance of “Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men” below.

In “Hearts Aglow,” the quasi–title track off Weyes Blood’s 2022 album, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow, Natalie Mering sings, “I’ve been waiting for my life to begin/For someone to light up my heart again.” In the video for the song, shot partially in granulated VHS quality, she finds that someone: everybody attending her In Holy Flux Tour.

Musical tag-teaming doesn’t have results much more fruitful than what came about when the showrunners of “A Small Light” picked Ariel Marx to compose the score for the limited series and Este Haim to serve as executive music producer. Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Yet, in their very separate roles, both found ways to bring musical light or even levity into a drama that inevitably skews toward tension.
Este Haim took on the Emp job for the first time with “A Small Light” after previously scoring or co-composing “Maid” and “Cha Cha Smooth” — on top of her day job as one-third of the rocking sister trio Haim. For “A Small Light,...

Gorillaz and Beck shared the stage on Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform their Cracker Island collaborative track, “Possession Island.” Watch it below.
“Possession Island” is the closing song on Gorillaz’s eighth LP, which arrived in February. The joint track marks the second time the pair have collaborated following “The Valley of the Pagans” from Gorillaz’s 2020 album, Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez. In September 2022, band and Beck performed both songs live during the former’s star-studded Los Angeles tour stop.
The Kimmel guest spot also served as an encore of sorts for Beck, who visited the late-night show in February to play his latest solo single, “Thinking About You.”
Gorillaz will return to the stage this weekend to play weekend two of Coachella 2023 (get tickets here), while Beck will embark on a co-headlining trek with Phoenix in August. Grab seats here for their “Summer Odyssey Tour,...

Weyes Blood stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night to deliver an emotional rendition of “God Turn Me Into a Flower.” Watch the performance below.
Natalie Mering took the studio stage in an elegant white gown as she sang the enchanting ballad, backed by a small accompanying band that included synths and orchestral strings. But her voice was certainly the focus, as spotlights and film footage gleamed behind her. Finally, as the track reached its emotional peak, Mering’s “heart” began to glow.
The performance comes as Mering is in the midst of supporting her new album, And In the Darkness, Hearts Aglow. Met with widespread acclaim, the record shows the 34-year-old exploring themes of denial and doom in society, but hones in on an inspiring message of light overcoming darkness. “I think when things get really dark, the best thing to do is focus in on the light,...

Weyes Blood stopped by The Late Show to perform her song “God Turn Me Into a Flower.” Appearing with an expansive live band and several back-up singers, the musician, neé Natalie Mering, gave the emotive track an ethereal vibe complete with beams of sunlight.
“God Turn Me Into a Flower,” originally released last year, comes off Weyes Blood’s fifth LP, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow. The album followed Weyes Blood’s celebrated 2019 LP, Titanic Rising; the two records are part of a trilogy that grapples with themes of universal despair and climate change.

Beck reenters his morning phase on his surprise new single, “Thinking About You,” which arrived Thursday night with no warning from the singer-songwriter.
After spending the last half-decade traversing the pop universe with albums like Colors and Hyperspace, “Thinking About You” finds Beck returning to the mellow, introspective, and acoustic vibes found on 2014’s Album of the Year Grammy-winning Morning Phase and 2003’s Sea Change; “Thinking About You” was actually recorded in the same studio where Beck made the latter classic.

This year, John Cale will turn 81. In the decades since he co-founded the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed in the mid-1960s, the adventurous Welsh singer-songwriter, producer, and composer has had a historic, if at times intentionally errant, run. Along with his own albums (which include high points like 1973’s Paris 1919 and 1974’s Fear), he’s also been one of music’s most avid collaborators (producing legendary records by Patti Smith, the Stooges, and the Modern Lovers, and making fine duo LPs, like the Andy Warhol tribute Songs for Drella,...

Jack Antonoff corralled an intriguing mix of musicians — including Phoebe Bridgers, the 1975’s Matty Healy, and Phish’s Trey Anastasio — for a performance of the Jackson Browne-penned Nico classic, “These Days.”
Stereogum shared a video of the special performance (and several others), which also featured vocal contributions from Bridgers’ boygenius bandmate Lucy Dacus and Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering. Meanwhile, Antonoff, Healy, and Anastasio combined to create a tangle of finger-picked guitars.

“It’s been a long, strange year/ everyone is sad,” Natalie Mering notes near the end of her musical project Weyes Blood’s fifth album. That observation comes at the outset of “The Worst Is Done,” which finds Mering taking stock of recent history’s bleakness and casting a weary glance upon any hopes that it might lift. While the synth fireworks and upbeat backing vocals that orbit her smooth alto are supposed to indicate the opposite, there’s also an uncanniness about them that gives reason to Mering’s unease.

In recent interviews, Natalie Mering has invited us to picture our hearts as glow sticks, lighting up when broken. So her fifth album as Weyes Blood, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow (Aitdha), finds her addressing the unsettling state of the world with a beguiling blend of cosy nostalgia and cautious optimism.
If you're unfamiliar with the LA-based, 34-year-old artist, imagine those “occupants of interplanetary craft” had responded to Karen Carpenter’s call and beamed her aboard a slightly wonky flying saucer, powered by vintage synths. Her velvety vocals are so rich and warm that listening to her often feels like dipping your anxieties in melted chocolate. At times, she can pile her impeccably researched retro-gloop on a little thickly. But 2019’s Titanic Rising had a confidence and melodic complexity that lifted it beyond pastiche.

Back when Natalie Mering was a teenager and Blockbuster still existed, she was in the store choosing a DVD with her uncle. “He was a real tough guy,” recalls the singer-songwriter. Mering was opposed to renting anything apocalypse-themed; she had just seen An Inconvenient Truth and the last thing she wanted to watch was a Michael Bay disaster flick. Her uncle teased her over this childish blindness to the changing world. Ever since, Mering has faced her apocalyptic sorrows head-on, rendering the end of days in stirring, shimmering songs released under the moniker, Weyes Blood. “I thought, ‘Damn, he has a point.’”
Mering, 34, is known for making music about this world that sounds like it comes from another. Since her 2011 debut, she has crafted songs that slide between chamber pop, late Sixties folk, Seventies Am radio, off-kilter rock and classical, with vocals that lean closer to Baroque opera than modern pop.

The avalanche of music docs over the past decade has left very few stones unturned — and more than a few films that can barely justify their running times if not their existence. But one overdue and heretofore untold story is that of Judee Sill, a brilliant, innovative early ‘70s singer-songwriter who was the first artist signed to David Geffen’s Asylum Records, and was labelmates and/or a contemporary of the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, David Crosby and Joni Mitchell. Sill was frequently compared with the latter (to her great annoyance) and although there are few direct musical similarities, they were both among the most original and innovative singer-songwriters of the era: Her music fit early ‘70s Southern California vibe of her label and milieu, but it was stranger, with deep classical influences, wildly unusual structures and voicings and often dark subject matter.

But tragically, Sill died of a drug overdose in 1979, never reaching the same heights as some of her peers, like Browne, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt,...

Weyes Blood embarks on an epic and emotional adventure through California with her new song, “Grapevine.” The track will appear on Weyes Blood’s next album, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow, which will arrive Nov. 18 via Sub Pop
The sprawling song is anchored by Natalie Mering’s acoustic guitar but expands outward with an ornamental arrangement flush with rich harmonies, bells, and strings. Lyrically, Mering mixes two classic themes — lonesome roads and lonesome hearts — with “Grapevine” taking its title from a stretch of Interstate 5 that runs through Southern California.

Gru and the minions are back in an all new blast from the past adventure. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” takes viewers back to Gru’s childhood where, on the brink of adolescence, Gru wants nothing more than to join The Sinister Six, a group of villains notorious for their collaboration in crime.
The adventures of all these characters as well as the minions are backed by a reimagined soundtrack full of ’70s hits.
Produced by Jack Antonoff, the soundtrack includes St. Vincent’s rendition of Lipps Inc’s 1979 hit “Funkytown,” H.E.R.’s version of “Dance to the Music” from Sly and the Family Stone in 1967, Bleachers’ rendition of John Lennon’s 1970 song “Instant Karma” and Phoebe Bridgers’ version of The Carpenters’ 1972 ballad “Goodbye to Love.” Even the Minions get a few spotlight moments like when they sing Paul Simon’s “Cecelia.”

A series of wildly colorful posters with an unusual collection of artists have appeared in London in recent days, listing Diana Ross and Tame Impala across the top, along with Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent, Thundercat, Brockhampton, Caroline Polacheck, RZA, Brittany Howard, Bleachers, Tierra Whack, Weyes Blood, Kali Uchis, H.E.R. and others, with a “produced by Jack Antonoff” listed at the bottom.
Stereogum noted a tiny Minion next to Ross’ name on the poster, which makes it likely that the poster — which frankly resembles some of the “Yellow Submarine”-derived 7-Up ads from the early ‘70s — is a teaser for the soundtrack album for the forthcoming motion picture “Minions: The Rise Of Gru,” which makes even more sense since the “Despicable Me” prequel is set during the 1970s. Also, People reported last year that the soundtrack would be ‘70s-inspired, so it seems possible that these artists may be covering songs from...
