We're not in Kansas any more...
Universal Pictures has pulled back the curtain on Jon M. Chu's big-screen adaptation of Broadway hit, Wicked, with an extended trailer, and if you're not too familiar with the story, don't worry - this teaser tells you everything you need to know.
We're used to trailers giving a bit too much away at this stage, but this really takes the flying monkey!
The movie, which is set to hit theaters on November 27, will tell the story of how a shy green-skinned woman named Elphaba becomes a cackling villain with an aversion to water we first met in The Wizard of Oz.
Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba, who will ultimately become the "Wicked Witch of the West," while pop megastar Ariana Grande will play Glinda, aka "Good Witch of the East."
It's probably not a major to spoiler to note that their friendship doesn't last!

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star in director Jon M Chu’s new musical adaptation. Take a look at the new Wicked trailer.
Jon M. Chu’s Wicked is one of this year’s most awaited film musicals. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Chu’s film is adapted from the hugely popular, and rather good, stage musical. Recently, Chu also confirmed that the film would use live vocals, which isn’t surprising as both Grande and Erivo have pretty good pipes for this sort of thing.
The story proved too big for a single film, so Chu and writer Winnie Holtzman have divided it into two parts. We assume the first part will adapt the musical’s first act while Wicked Part Two will do justice to the second act, but don’t quote us on that.
A new trailer has just landed online as well, albeit not on a broomstick.

In my review of The Greatest Hits, the new sci-fi romance from The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby writer/director Ned Benson, I mention that it opens with a montage of two young lovers “generally doing things that young, hip couples do in LA.” So, as someone from Los Angeles, I couldn’t help but pick the brains of Benson and stars Lucy Boynton and Justin H. Min about my hometown when I recently had the chance to sit down with them … in Chicago, where I now live. Because The Greatest Hits is a movie about the power of music to literally transport protagonist Harriet (Boynton) back in time, we also talked about music. But less specific artists (though some come up), and more the ways that...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers about The Greatest Hits.] Nostalgia and grief get intertwined in The Greatest Hits, now streaming on Hulu. With the help of specific songs, Harriet (Lucy Boynton) finds herself capable of traveling back to the past before her boyfriend, Max (David Corenswet), is tragically killed. The songs take Harriet back to the time she and Max first heard them together, but she also suffers seizures in the process. Despite her many attempts during each time-traveling trip, Harriet is unable to stop Max’s death from happening. When Harriet meets and falls in love with David (Justin H. Min), Harriet eventually comes to a life-altering decision. Harriet figures out a way to save Max, and it’s by never starting a relationship with him in the first place when she travels back one last time. This also means she has to sacrifice her current romance with David, but she promises to look for...

Harriet (Lucy Boynton) is struggling to deal with the loss of her boyfriend Max (David Corenswet), attending grief therapy two years after his passing. She figures out that certain songs will take her back in time, charting music shared in their relationship to revisit specific memories. Trying to remember the song that could unlock saving Max’s life, Harriet gets mixed up with David (Justin H. Min) in the present.
It goes without saying that a good soundtrack makes a movie — though that doesn’t necessarily mean one needs to dazzle in order to make a film worthwhile. However, if you are leading with sound first, it’s an unwritten given that your songs need to be in order and benefit the wider storyline. It might be The Greatest Hits in name, but...

Nearly a decade after his ambitious first feature (which then became three features) and filmmaker Ned Benson is finally back on the big (and small) screen. His second film, “The Greatest Hits,” arrives ten years after his directorial debut, the 2014 breakout feature “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.” And this time, Benson is letting his protagonist have a happily ever after … kind of.
During a recent interview, Benson told IndieWire that, in a similar twist to his “Eleanor Rigby” process, the script for “The Greatest Hits” was one he had been tinkering with for years, starting in 2008. Unlike “Eleanor Rigby,” which was eventually split into a “Him”/”Her”/”Them” mini trilogy, “The Greatest Hits” firmly centers on sole lead Harriet (Lucy Boynton), whose heartbreak leads to a music-induced time travel back to her past relationship with her late lover (David Corenswet) prior to his death.

After a premiere at the SXSW Film Festival last month, Ned Benson’s romantic drama The Greatest Hits is making its way to streaming on Hulu. The film, a love story with a unique sci-fi twist, is a crowd-pleasing charmer, and much of that is thanks to its stars, Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Justin H. Min (The Umbrella Academy).

Here comes another time-traveling fantasy, but with a twist. As the kids on Bandstand used to say to Dick Clark, “It’s a gotta’ good beat. You can dance to it”. Maybe you could even do the twist. That’s because the force to send this story back through the decades isn’t a big machine, like the one H.G. Welles conjured or even the beloved DeLorean that Doc Brown modified. Nor is it hypnosis ala’ Somewhere In Time, though the brain is involved along with…the ears. You see the gimmick here is music, specifically certain pop tunes that propel a twenty-something woman into the past. And just what is she doing six or seven years ago? Making “sure bet” investments perhaps? No, she’s trying to save a “lost love”, so this is really a romantic fantasy with a soundtrack that’s this couple’s take on...

Lucy Boynton plays a woman who can travel back in time with the power of a song in a high-concept, low-enjoyment fantasy
In the often insufferably cutesy romance The Greatest Hits, our heroine travels back in time whenever a song from her past is played, nostalgia acting as a magical, transporting force. While watching the film, we too are pulled back but rather to all of the far superior films we’re inconveniently reminded of, from High Fidelity to Richard Curtis’s similarly high-concept About Time to the ’00s Sundance breakouts (500) Days of Summer and Garden State. It’s a film about the power that great music has in distracting us from the now that instead showcases the power that great films have in distracting us from the lesser ones they inspire.
But even without the many whiffs of familiarity, writer-director Ned Benson’s film would still be hitting a bum note.

There’re countless moments throughout Tiago Teixeira’s feature debut Custom that play like Barker, Nakata or early Cronenberg. Haunting, sexy, deeply disturbing stuff. Icky, sticky seediness, grained-up and stamped onto videotape, like The Ring made for OnlyFans. Deeply dour, but in a good way.
A micro-budget stab at tackling the nefarious underbelly of online sex work, Custom is – much like Teixeira’s shorts (FrightFest alums Dog Skin and Molar in particular) – a mood piece; more interested and involved with its world and themes than its characters. Although it must be said that leads Abigail Hardingham (Nina Forever) and Rowan Polonski (Kingsman) get thoroughly stuck in as artsy couple Harriet and Jasper; amateur pornographers who find themselves tangled up in a bizarre, VHS-themed nightmare, courtesy of their newest client.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
One year after the release of Amityville Scarecrow, we get the sequel Amityville Scarecrow 2 (2022). Unlike other sequels in the “franchise,” however, this second entry boasts an entirely new creative team. Stepping in as director is Adam Cowie, while Craig McLearie takes over writing duties.
Amityville Scarecrow 2 picks up two years after the events of the first film. Adult sisters Tina (Amanda-Jade Tyler) and Mary (Kate Sandison) are no longer estranged, and they’re still aiming to re-open the cursed family campground, though they’re rapidly running out of money.
Mary’s daughter Harriet (Sofia Lacey) is also still around, though she confides in boyfriend Dylan (Dan Robins) that she’s ready to move on. She just can’t find the words to tell her mother.

Nor is she impressed when she meets Sam (Will Kemp), the event’s official Mr. Darcy. But Eloise and Sam soon discover that they have more in common than they first thought.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Welcome back to a new year of The Amityville IP. With Amityville Scarecrow, this editorial series leaves behind the scant four “franchise” titles released in 2021 for the gargantuan ten titles released in 2022.
While Scarecrow is a similarly low budget production with some dodgy script decisions (courtesy of screenwriter Shannon Holiday), the emphasis on fractured family dynamics feels more in keeping with the early Amityville entries.
For no apparent reason, the film arbitrarily changes the mythology of the series. In Scarecrow, the Amityville murders were committed by “the Richards brothers,” not by Ronald DeFeo. After the family home was razed, a summer camp was built on the property, but the land became cursed.

The sixth episode of “Lessons in Chemistry” features a tense protest scene in which a Black majority are fighting to stop the construction of a freeway through their neighborhood.
Millicent Shelton, who directed Episodes 5 and 6 of the Apple TV+ series, unpacked the process of producing the sequence led by Elizabeth Zott’s (Brie Larson) neighbor Harriet Sloane (Aja Naomi King), which wasn’t in Bonnie Garmus’ bestselling novel.
“We found this wonderful location near Lax and thought ‘This is it. This is the space. It’s beautiful.’ I love combining beauty with pain. So we tried to keep it beautiful, but also give it the grit to keep it honest and authentic,” Shelton said. “We were able to shut down the ramp of the highway for, I believe it was half an hour, and the cars came down, we swung the crane over to the sit-in.”
Shelton said the protest was inspired by real-life events.

Elizabeth Zott's past comes into focus as she tries to piece together her future on Lessons In Chemistry Season 1 Episode 6, "Poirot".
While Elizabeth handles issues in her career, things are changing in her life at home with Mad and her friendship with Harriet.
Although Lessons In Chemistry Season 1 is nearly finished, the loose ends of Elizabeth's life have been slowly coming together throughout the final episodes.
Elizabeth, content with her daughter Madeline and her success on Supper At Six, seems to have it all for a fleeting moment.
When she starts having flashbacks about her brother, John, things begin to come undone for Elizabeth, though the difficulties provide some much-needed clarity.
Dealing with grief has never been Elizabeth's strong suit, but reaching out helps her realize that communication will benefit everyone.
Lessons In Chemistry Season 1 hasn't been shy about letting the viewer know its intentions.

Handyman from Hell is a catchy title, but sadly, the film is not nearly as catchy. It may sound like a horror film, but the film is a simple revenge drama with shades of the thriller genre thrown in the mix. The acting is not abysmal, but it’s not remarkable either, probably because the scenes aren’t constructed in a believable manner, characters are never allowed to fully express themselves, and neither do the actors seem to care. The story revolves around Maggie, who shifts to a new home after separating from her husband. Soon, a psychopath named Nate comes into her life with ulterior motives. Maggie has the support of her friends but ditching them and trusting Nate may just prove fatal.

In Lessons in Chemistry’s two-episode premiere, a surprising star emerged: Aja Naomi King’s Harriet Sloane.
The Apple TV+ series, based on the eponymous 2022 novel by Bonnie Garmus, follows Elizabeth Zott (played by Brie Larson) as she works to become a scientist in Southern California during the patriarchal 1950s. Those familiar with the book know that Harriet’s role in the novel is a supporting one — she’s a neighbor who babysits Elizabeth’s daughter while Elizabeth pursues a career in chemistry. Harriet is described as older and though Garmus doesn’t explicitly say it, it’s implied that she is white.
