Sterlin Harjo, co-creator and showrunner of FX’s hit “Reservation Dogs,” will receive the second Variety Showrunner Award at the 11th annual Scad TVfest. The festival returns in-person this year in Atlanta from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11.
The series, which follows a group of four Native American teenagers growing up on a reservation in rural Oklahoma, wrapped its second season last year, with the third set to premiere later this year.
“No show moved me more last year than the second season of ‘Reservation Dogs,’ which had audiences laughing one minute and bawling the next,” said Michael Schneider, television editor of Variety. “And that’s a testament to Sterlin Harjo, who had somehow never been a showrunner until now, but has crafted a landmark series that has all of us fans eagerly anticipating Season 3 and what comes next.”

Not only did that event go on without a hitch, it became a tremendous success, and made the team realize that it was a trend they want to continue after the pandemic ends.

After being shut down last year by the pandemic, Savannah College of Art and Design is returning to an in-person format this year for its annual Scad Savannah Film Festival, which runs Oct. 23-30.
The fest will also have a virtual component. Student filmmakers are turning out to volunteer in numbers that have “happily surprised” and exceeded the expectations of Christina Routhier, longtime executive and artistic director of Scad theaters and festivals.
“We have had such a great turnout and all of our volunteer meetings, and I think we’re going to be just fine,” Routhier says. “In regards to volunteer numbers, it hasn’t been as much as it has in years past: we have at least 400 to 500 volunteers where we would normally have 600 to 700. But our screenings are scaled back, we’re only at half-capacity in our theaters and we’re not doing any kind of concession [stands] — we...

Scad Savannah Film Festival prides itself on involving the students at Savannah College of Art and Design in almost every aspect of its annual event, from welcoming talent on the red carpet to weighing in on cinematic programming. This year, while the fest, running Oct. 24-31, goes virtual in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, this tradition of inclusion remains alive and well. Just as they were in pre-covid America, Scad students are integral to the fest’s collective sense of diversity and community.
“I really appreciate the festival for consciously including content and guest speakers with diverse backgrounds,” says Elina Itugot, a junior pursuing a Bfa in film and television. “I cannot stress enough how important it is to see people like yourself represented and recognized in the industry, especially as a young filmmaker. As a 20-year-old, queer, non-binary, Filipino immigrant filmmaker with mental illness, I find it very...

Films by and centering around women will be showcased among the 159 films — 35 narratives, 15 documentaries and 109 shorts — at the 22nd Scad Savannah Film Festival. Following an Oscar year in which they were shut out, more than 50 selections — many in awards-foreshadowing categories — are directed by women.
“I remember being at the Savannah Film Festival with Reed Morano,” says Olivia Wilde, Scad’s 2015 Spotlight Award recipient and producer-star of Morano’s “Meadowland.” “That was her directorial debut, and I was so profoundly proud to see her stepping into this role and getting to connect with her audience in that way.”
At this year’s festival, for which organizers expect 63,000 attendees from Oct. 26-Nov. 2, Wilde will receive Scad’s Rising Star Director Award for her directorial debut, “Booksmart.”
“It feels like female filmmakers are taking up more space,” she says. “We’re still only 15% of the Directors Guild, which has to change, but festivals...

In recent years, the Scad Savannah Film Festival has become a favorite Oscar season stop for stars and filmmakers. Unlike the Toronto Intl. Film Festival or Sundance, it’s not a frenzied hotbed of deals and world premieres, but it has its own quaint charms that reflect the historic 285-year-old city where it unspools.
“It’s one of those deep indie-film-loving communities that are as passionate about watching movies as it is about making them,” says director Jason Reitman, who shot “The Front Runner” in the city, and will be at the fest for a gala screening, along with star Hugh Jackman. It’s a return trip for Reitman, who screened “Tully” at the fest last year.
The festival’s passion for film is driven by the students and the faculty of the Savannah College of Art and Design (Scad), who run the event.
“Scad is the festival,” says president and founder Paula Wallace.
