The national tour of ‘Clue: A New Comedy’ remixes the classic murder mystery with farcical physical comedy and impassioned old-fashioned sensibilities.
“It’s all part of the game.”
There’s a strong relationship between mischievous murder mysteries and the horror genre. Murder mysteries inherently hinge upon death – it’s baked into the name – so it’s not surprising that horror has embraced this secretive subgenre and really emphasized the murder in murder mysteries. Murder mysteries have been popular in pop culture for nearly a century. However, there’s been a recent renaissance on this front with playful films like Knives Out, A Haunting in Venice, Bodies Bodies Bodies, the Scream franchise, and the prominence of the true-crime genre and armchair detectives. That being said, an underrated and evergreen source of murder mystery hijinks that’s entertained audiences for 75 years is Hasbro and Parker Brothers’ Clue.

The classic murder-mystery game Clue is headed back to screens both big and small, with Variety reporting this week that Sony is planning potential film and television adaptations.
Variety reports, “Hasbro Entertainment has closed a deal with Sony‘s TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Television for the film and TV rights for the beloved board game.”
“Sony is the perfect partner to adapt a property as culturally impactful and mystery-defining as ‘Clue,’” said Hasbro’s Zev Foreman and Gabriel Marano. “Nicole Brown, Katherine Pope, and their teams are tremendous creative collaborators and ideal partners to help us figure out after 75 years if it was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick.”
Clue was created way back in 1943 by Anthony E. Pratt, and the board game was of course notably turned into a feature film starring Tim Curry in 1985 and a mini-series in 2011.

Better known as Cluedo in the UK, Clue could eventually be a TV series, as Hasbro and Sony announce the latest effort to adapt the boardgame.
Movies based on toys and games bring in audiences these days. People also seem to like murder mysteries, if Knives Out is anything to go by. All of which might explain why Hasbro is partnering Sony in another attempt to adapt the murder mystery boardgame Clue (known in the UK as Cluedo) for the screen.
As reported by Variety, Hasbro Entertainment and Sony have signed a deal to make a film or TV series – at the time of writing, it isn’t clear which route the two corporations will take.
In a statement shared by the outlet, bosses from Hasbro described Clue as “culturally impactful,” which is quite a funny thing to say about an old boardgame that comes with a tiny piece of string and a miniature pistol,...

Sony is the latest player that would like to make an accusation. The studio has won the rights to develop a reimagining of the Hasbro board game “Clue,” and the studio intends to bring the murder mystery game to the screen for both film and television.
Hollywood has been trying to remake “Clue,” first adapted in Jonathan Lynn’s cult classic screwball comedy “Clue” from 1985, for years. Most recently, a project was set up at 20th Century Studios, and it had Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman circling to star along with “The Muppets Movie” filmmaker James Bobin directing. In 2022, Oren Uziel (“The Lost City”) stepped up to rewrite the original draft of the script from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (“Deadpool”), but it too went nowhere.
No cast or creative talent is attached at this stage of development. Sony is the only studio developing anything based on “Clue” at this time,...

The film and TV rights for Clue have landed at Sony, with Hasbro Entertainment closing a deal with TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Television to develop adaptations of the classic murder mystery board game.
Clue, the game, has players figure out who is responsible for a murder in a cast of characters that includes Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White and Miss Scarlet. The location of the murder (dining room, kitchen, ballroom, etc.) and weapon (velvet rope, lamp, knife, etc.) also must be deciphered.
The board game was previously adapted into a 1985 comedy that starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn and Christopher Lloyd, among others. While the film performed poorly at the box office and debuted to lukewarm reviews, Clue, which was written and directed by Jonathan Lynn, has since reached cult status. The game that taught you how candlesticks could be used for murder is getting an animated series from Fox.
"Clue," the board game first sold in 1949, was turned into a live-action film back in 1985 and is getting the animation treatment from Hasbro's eOne and Fox Entertainment's Bento Box Entertainment. Don't get this series confused with the 20th Century Studios live-action remake that is set to star Ryan Reynolds, directed by James Bobin ("The Muppets").
If you cast your mind back to childhood, you may recall the board game with teeny tiny murder weapons, rooms where the murder took place, and suspects named Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, and Mr. Green (these names differ in some versions). The game, which has been sold in over 30 countries (where it's sometimes called "Cluedo"), has a murder for you to solve, and now it's happening in animated form.

In “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” a dysfunctional group of rich kids who have long outgrown each other hole up in one of their parents’ mansions during a hurricane. When they’ve had enough of getting crossed and making TikToks, they turn to an old pastime: a Mafia-like game called “Bodies Bodies Bodies” that always ends in tears and hurt feelings. This time, though, the stakes aren’t just emotional: after the power cuts out, actual bodies begin to drop. Inside one of these chronically-online narcissists lurks a killer – who could it be?

Fox, Bento Box and Hasbro’s Entertainment One (eOne) are developing an animated series based on the iconic board game, Clue.
Clue, which was originally called Murder!, was invented by Englishman Anthony E. Pratt and launched in 1949. Pratt created the game during WWII to pass the time during lengthy air raid drills. Clue is conceptualized on the murder of Mr. Boddy, the host of the game’s “dinner party,” during which players must untangle various clues to determine who among the party’s six guests — Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green and Dr. Orchid — committed the crime.
Since its debut, Clue has been introduced to more than 30 countries. The game, which has 324 different plots for players to solve, was adapted into a film in 1985 (pictured above) that featured three alternate versions, each with a different ending. And on Wednesday’s “The Daily Show,” correspondent Dulcé Sloan took a break from freaking out about the constancy of grim Covid-19 news to roast these homes — and their owners. Hey, we all gotta do something to stay sane.
In the clip, Sloan explains that she started muting the news because the actual content freaked her out to much. (We feel that – we’re definitely having the same problem.) And that’s when she noticed what she says is “the worst version of ‘Cribs.'” So she went through a list of some very prominent TV personalities and explained why their homes need a vaccine against tackiness.

The sardonic and melodic John Grant is always one for surprises, but the video for his latest track, “He’s Got His Mother’s Hips” tops his usual mischievousness. Off his upcoming electro-tinged record ‘Love Is Magic’ (out October 12th), “Hips” appears to take its visual cues and inspiration from Peter Gabriel’s iconic 1980s “Sledgehammer” video. Grant worked with 13 different animators — including Cardiff-based duo Casey Redmond and Ewan Jones Morris — to craft the quirky, colorful and kinky assemblage of images that encompass stop-motion, papier-mâché and digital techniques.

“Life after death is as improbable as sex after marriage!”
Clue plays midnights this weekend (June 22nd and 23rd) at The Tivoli Theater as part of the Reel late at The Tivoli Midnight series.
Way back in 1985, before we were translating literally every board game, video game, or action figure into a movie, there was Clue.
As in the Parker Brothers board game, seven suspects find themselves in a mysterious mansion with the body of someone who has been murdered by one of them. Was it Colonel Mustard (Martin Mull) with the revolver in the conservatory? Or was it Miss Scarlett (Lesley Ann Warren) with the rope in the billiards room?
Could it be both?
Clue was filmed with three possible endings. That’s 321 fewer endings than the board game permits, but two endings more than offered by most movies.

Are you ready for an R-rated Clue movie? I sure hope so, because writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who are developing a new Clue film with Ryan Reynolds, say that just might happen. It was that son of a bitch Colonel Mustard, in the goddamn study, with the motherfucking candlestick. You might remember that Ryan Reynolds is […]
