John Oliver took a jab at Apple TV+ during the latest episode of his HBO show Last Week Tonight.
During a segment about the way Dollar Tree and Dollar General stores are run, Oliver brought up TikTok videos of retail employees complaining about the work conditions, including a staffer who was asked to reopen her store shortly after it had been robbed.
“An armed robbery is a traumatic event people need time to recover from,” Oliver said before delivering the punchline, “It’s not something you can just ignore like a spam call or a broken light bulb or any show on Apple TV.”
Oliver then asked his viewers, “Did you know Octavia Spencer starred as a true crime podcaster on a show called Truth Be Told for three seasons?”
“Of course you didn’t. It’s Apple TV, where celebrities go to hide,” he quipped.

There were a lot of reasons why Octavia Spencer was interested in playing the role of true-crime podcaster Poppy Parnell in the Apple TV+ series “Truth Be Told”: the opportunity to explore a genre that fascinated her, the chance to work with executive producer Nichelle Tramble Spellman and the opportunity to mix a mystery with a family story, among others.
But when star and executive producer Spencer appeared with Spellman and co-star Mekhi Phifer at TheWrap’s virtual screening of “Truth Be Told,” she and her fellow panelists got particularly excited when she talked about a different reason.
“I would be a fan of this show if I weren’t involved, because we haven’t seen a podcaster or journalists portrayed this way in primetime,” she told TheWrap’s awards editor Steve Pond, and then grinned. “And it’s also my ‘Columbo’ moment!”

Moderated by TV features editor Emily Longeretta, the event began with a conversation about what it looks like to run a writers’ room under pandemic restrictions. Each writer offered different perspectives on the pros and cons.
Chris Mundy, writer and executive producer of “Ozark” much prefers in-person writing, but he found that keeping the writing staff consistent allowed the Zoom experience to go as smoothly as possible.

“Watchmen” director Stephen Williams has a curious analogy for how Damon Lindelof weaved the Tulsa Massacre into his HBO update of Alan Moore’s acclaimed graphic novel.
The nine-episode run begins by going back to the site of the ugliest, and mostly untold, moments in American history that is widely considered to be the country’s single worst incident of racial violence. Williams said, “In much the same way that the destruction of the planet Krypton was the birth moment for Clark Kent/Superman, so too this event could become the catalyst to set all the pieces of the narrative puzzle into play.”
Williams’ comments came during TheWrap’s Emmy contenders virtual roundtable with directors and showrunners on Monday, which also included Derek Cianfrance (“I Know This Much is True”), Nichelle Tramble Spellman (“Truth Be Told”), Alan Poul (“The Eddy”) and Paul Simms (“What We Do in the Shadows”).

“Truth Be Told” showrunner Nichelle Tramble Spellman describes Octavia Spencer as “the gold standard. I think that I’m spoiled from this point on.” The TV veteran spoke about working with Spencer both as a star and as an executive producer while appearing at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel, conducted virtually by managing editor Chris Beachum. Watch our exclusive video interview with Tramble Spellman above.

Based on Kathleen Barber‘s book “Are You Sleeping,” the Apple TV+ series stars Spencer as true crime podcaster Poppy Parnell, who’s investigating the case of Warren Cave (Aaron Paul), who claims he’s been wrongfully convicted of murdering a father of identical twins. Although this might sound an awful lot like a clone of Sarah Koenig‘s highly influential “Serial” podcast, Tramble Spellman was interested in setting her show in “a pre-‘Serial’ world, where...

Apple TV Plus has been shut out at its first-ever Golden Globes.
The #MeToo-inspired series was nominated in two categories at the 77th annual ceremony: drama series and TV drama actress for both Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Neither star won.
Leading ladies Aniston and Witherspoon were expected to cancel each other out on the Globes ballot, where they were nominated alongside Olivia Colman of “The Crown,” Jodie Comer of “Killing Eve” and Nicole Kidman of “Big Little Lies.” As a series, “The Morning Show” faced stiff competition, too, nominated alongside the second seasons of both HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and “Succession,” and BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” as well as the third season of Netflix’s “The Crown.” HBO’s “Succession” picked up the drama series statue, while Colman nabbed the actress trophy.

In Apple TV+’s “Truth Be Told,” Octavia Spencer plays Poppy Parnell, a true-crime podcaster who is compelled to reopen the murder case that made her a national sensation and comes face to face with the man she may have mistakenly helped to put behind bars. Relitigating the murder case via her podcast, Parnell contends with nearly 20 years of family secrets, deceit, and the San Francisco Bay Area’s powerful in order to get to the truth.
The series, which is created by Nichelle Tramble Spellman (“The Good Wife”) and premieres today, came about after general conversations on the value of true crime between executive producers Jenno Topping, Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Witherspoon recommended that Topping and Neustadter consider Kathleen Barber’s 2017 novel, “Are You Sleeping.”
“We read it and loved it, and especially loved its potential in terms of an adaptation,” Topping said. “Lauren then got involved as well.

In an age where Star Wars and superheroes dominate the cultural conversation, there’s currently a genre that feels sneakily more omnipresent than any intellectual property. Though you likely have a coworker or neighbor that only knows Baby Yoda from the memes, there’s a big chance that same person has binged The Devil Next Door and is ready to share their opinions, or they can’t wait to start watching The Confession Killer. True crime has always been a popular genre for American audiences, but in the streaming age, it seems more lucrative and mainstream than ever.

On paper, Apple’s twisty crime drama series, “Truth be Told,” reads like a win, given its top-to-bottom stellar cast and creator/showrunner Nichelle Tramble Spellman’s pedigree. Undoubtedly its greatest strength, the performances certainly help elevate otherwise pedestrian material, although not nearly enough to earn the “prestige” label that Apple aims for with its first limited series. The ensemble keeps it afloat, even if it never quite meets the expectations set for itself.

Although Kathleen Barber’s 2017 novel “Are You Sleeping?” was a direct piece of source material for Apple TV Plus’ limited series “Truth Be Told,” it was far from the only one on which creator and showrunner Nichelle Tramble Spellman relied to create her television series about “a family’s tragedy becoming water cooler talk.”
The story centers on a nuclear family whose patriarch was killed decades before the events of the show take place. The family’s teenage neighbor was accused and later convicted of the crime, and one of the family’s teenage daughters (both played by Lizzy Caplan) testified during that trial. Then, journalist Poppy Parnell’s (Octavia Spencer) reporting on the case made it seem like he was guilty, but now, she is having doubts and re-opens the case by starting a podcast about it.
“It’s kind of a family drama masquerading as a crime drama.

It’s an alarming trend as of late. Men and women—incarcerated for years upon years—are being set free after discovering they’ve been doing someone else’s time in prison. To say such a realization is both infuriating and soul-crushing is an understatement. It also calls into question the legal system as a whole. Are all parts doing their due diligence in seeing that an accused individual is truly innocent until proven guilty? A question like this and circumstances like these form the backbone of the upcoming Apple TV+ series “Truth Be Told.”

Katherine Lanasa has joined the cast of Are You Sleeping, the upcoming Apple thriller drama series starring Octavia Spencer and Lizzy Caplan, in a major recurring role.
She will play a new character that replaces the one previously played by Moon Bloodgood who had been cast as a series regular on the show but exited after four of the eight Season 1 episodes were filmed.
As part of the recasting, the role of Poppy’s right hand was reconceived. Lanasa will play Noa Havilland, Poppy’s (Spencer) producing partner. Bloodgood played Cath Min, Poppy’s (Spencer) best friend; that character is no longer part of the story.
Are You Sleeping, from Chernin Entertainment/Endeavor Content and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, is created and written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman based on the true-crime novel by Kathleen Barber. It provides a unique glimpse into America’s obsession with true-crime podcasts...
