New Trailer for The Blackening: "The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game. Directed by Tim Story and screenplay and screen story by Tracy Oliver & Dewayne Perkins, The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?

Lionsgate has set the release of MRC’s acclaimed horror-comedy The Blackening for June 16, 2023 – Juneteenth weekend – and the final trailer has been released this afternoon.
The film looks like a hilarious mix of Saw, The Cabin in the Woods, and Scream, filtering its commentary on the horror genre through an all-Black lens. If this trailer is any indication, The Blackening seems primed and ready to be one of 2023’s most-talked-about horror treats.

“I love stand-up,” declares Tiffany Haddish, as she reflects on her 25-year career. “That’s where my heart is.” While Haddish’s acting star has been on the ascendant ever since she lit up the screen in her big-screen breakthrough, Girls Trip, in 2017, she knows she’d always be most comfortable in front of a live audience. “Somebody said to me, ‘What if you were told you could never act again?’ I’d say, ‘As long as I can do stand-up, I’m fine with that.’”
And if she was told she couldn’t do that? “I’d be like, ‘I will fight you, and I’m going to find a way.’ If I have to go to barbershops to tell jokes, if I have to go to the grocery store, to the mall, wherever I got to go to tell jokes, I will make it work.”

Another day, another report from the precursor scene. Yes, today marks another notable point in Phase One of the season, as the New York Film Critics Circle is chiming in with their winners for 2017. Not only that, yesterday has the nominees announced for the 22nd annual Satellite Awards. We’re still early on in this point, but some contenders for Oscar attention are starting to get wins under their belts. Over the next few weeks, a glut of critics awards will start to give some films and performances a leg up in the race. Of course, until the Guilds chime in, no movie, no actor, no actress, and no filmmaker is truly out of it. As you’ll see, Nyfcc had their victors, which is always a prestigious bunch, while the Satellite nominations more or less included all the big contenders. For the latter, Dunkirk led with a strong 11 nods,...

Lionsgate’s “Wonder” made third place look sexy over Thanksgiving. After doubling predictions with $27.5 million on its opening weekend, it fell less than 18 percent on its second weekend— compared to the 56 percent drop for “Justice League” and 29 percent for “The Star,” the other two films that opened November 17. With $73 million domestic as of November 29, “Wonder” is fast approaching profit on a $20 million production budget.
In some key aspects, “Wonder” resembles “The Blind Side.” Both are based on feel-good best sellers (“Wonder” a novel, “The Blind Side” nonfiction) about young people who overcome school-year odds with the help of dedicated parental figures. Both films opened the weekend before Thanksgiving as counter-programming against a blockbuster (“The Twilight Saga: New Moon” then, “Justice League” here).

Sofia Coppola has had quite a year. In Cannes, she became the second woman in history to win best director at the Cannes Film Festival for her Civil War drama “The Beguiled,” which received largely positive reactions. The movie landed in theaters under less-exciting conditions: She faced backlash against her decision to remove the sole black character in Don Siegel’s 1971 adaptation. Coppola fired back with a statement in IndieWire explaining her decision. Love it or hate it, “The Beguiled” wound up being quite the conversation-starter in the midst of summer movie season.

Christmas is upon us and with every approaching Christmas season, audiences can expect a seasonally themed comedy (or two) to crop up in November/December. This year, in addition to the Daddy’s Home 2 joy, we have a festive sequel to Jon Lucas and Scott Moore’s fine Comedy hit Bad Moms. Unfortunately it seems that A Bad Moms Christmas makes the fundamental error of not actually having many (or arguably any) jokes on show.
The concept is very by the books for festive family fracas fare and sees the three bad matriarchs from the last film – Amy (Mila Kunis), Carla (Kathryn Hahn) and Kiki (Kristen Bell) – prepare for the big show for mums (sorry, ‘moms’)…Christmas. But their job of taking all the stress of the holidays and styling it out will be made even worse this year, as their own mothers – Ruth (Christine Baranski), Sandy (Cheryl Hines) and...

After September delivered record numbers, the month of October saw the 2017 box office return to its downward trend, delivering calendar grosses down 15.6% compared to last year, falling below $600 million for the first time in ten years. Perhaps most startling is that with 287 films in release, the average per film was just $1.9 million, making it the first time that average has ever fallen below $2.1 million for any individual month based on BoxOfficeMojo's records going back to 1982. That being said, the Fall movie season has since come to an end and overall the season showed a ~6% improvement compared to last year thanks in large part to the record setting release of WB's It back in September, which became the first Fall release to ever gross over $300 million domestically. In fact, Warner Bros. had a strong Fall season overall, leading the charge in August, September and again in October despite the fact the...

Chris here. Is it time yet to start pondering the Golden Globes comedy field? One quick bit of potentially major news is that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has just officially designated Get Out to compete as a comedy. While this is probably music to team Get Out's ears, I'd argue that it's the appropriate choice - the film is sharp satire first, serious scares second to this viewer. But yes, this gives the film a major leg up to win a major trophy this season in a less competitive field.
This could also mean stronger chances for lead actor Daniel Kaluuya and possibly Allison Williams (who is strangely being campaigned as a lead) for Globes consideration as well. The stiffest competition will probably come from Lady Bird, but what other contenders should we be thinking about? Will The Disaster Artist register beyond James Franco's performance? Could hits...

Though Kylie didn’t directly address her rumored pregnancy, she did claim that the images, which were posted by The Daily Mail, had been Photoshopped in tweets.
“First of all if you’re going to photoshop my photos blogs/paps!! Check for the crooked lines in the background.2nd photo is clearly altered.”
The images were taken by X17Online, and the site responded to the cosmetics queen’s claims, writing, “They're 100% Real! No Photoshop, #nofilter, no additives, no preservatives -- all organic and all Real!”

Happy birthday to reality TV’s main mom!
On Sunday, Kris Jenner turned 62 and, to celebrate, her daughters shared sweet — and sassy — Instagram tributes to their mother.
“Happy Birthday to my best friend @krisjenner,” daughter Kim Kardashian West wrote alongside a recent selfie of the two women showing off their blonde hair. “Couldn’t have asked for a better mom! Literally don’t know how you do it and manage us all and be the best grandma and have the best outlook on life! I’m so grateful for you!!! Love you so much!”

I only just recently saw the original Bad Moms -- it was DVRed at an Airbnb I was staying at and I do love Kathryn Hahn -- which isn't that delayed a viewing, really, as it only came out last summer. But I skipped it at first, because Bad Moms looked...bad, a hard-r comedy about moms who've had it and so rebel by doing whip-its and driving muscle cars and calling each other "bitches,” things men think women would want to do if only society allowed them. (Both Bad Moms and its sequel are written and directed by two dudes, the same dudes behind The Hangover.)
If you never saw Bad Moms either, I'm here to tell you -- as word-of-mouth promised me -- it's...not bad. It's not great -- no no no -- but the cast is: Hahn as Carla, the single mom who has the big hair and all the p*ssy jokes, and...

Meet the comedy sequel with more montages than Rocky IV: it's A Bad Moms Christmas...
If you didn’t know going into seeing A Bad Moms Christmas that this was a sequel scrambled together in double-quick time, you could soon figure it out. It’s a hodgepodge of half-formed characters, erratic narrative pace, and parts of story that just about smash together to make something okay. That it does so is no small achievement, but it’s worth stating from the off that the comedy heights of last year’s Bad Moms are rarely troubled.
The idea this time is that the Bad Moms – Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn – each have their own Bad Moms to put up with. Respectively, they get Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines and Susan Sarandon. Baranski gets to play the overbearing, everything has to be perfect one. Hines is the clingy, living her life through her daughter mother.

In the absence of a Best Picture frontrunner, something I think we all can agree on at this particular juncture in time, does that mean anything could happen with Best Picture nominations? Or does that mean the Best Picture competition is fairly settled but that the films (i.e. campaigns) have yet to sort out who is the most formidable?
I'd argue, perhaps foolishly, that it's the latter. I see a fairly clear situation ahead where these seven films (and maybe only these seven) are going to be nominated. A winner will emerge but none have yet made a clear case that they're "the one".
Call Me By Your Name | Darkest Hour | Dunkirk
Get Out | Mudbound | The Shape of Water

Girls trip!
Kourtney Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian and Kendall Jenner took a break from their busy schedules and traveled down to Santa Barbara for a weekend getaway filled with wine tasting, pranks, and of course, luxurious beauty treatments.
While Kourtney admitted on the show she feels like she and Kendall aren’t as close as they used to be, the duo enjoyed some bathing suit-clad bonding time on the trip, wearing skimpy swimsuits as they did a full-body masking treatment.

Don't remember the context of this photo of Jamie Dornan with a Spider-Man figurine but I look at it once in a while and giggle. We shouldn't speak for him but let's guess that Jamie Dornan is excited that Spider-Man Homecoming hits DVD and BluRay today. Should we take a second look at it? Would you read if we did? When Denis Villeneuve’s much-hyped, long-in-the-making, and already critically beloved “Blade Runner 2049” hits theaters this Friday, it will be joining some unexpected company: a slew of other R-rated features that are already dominating the box office. This past weekend’s big winners may have initially made waves because of the oddly crowded nature of their ticket returns — each of the top three, including horror holdover “It,” the Tom Cruise actioner “American Made,” and comic book sequel “Kingsman: The Secret Circle,” made just over $17M — but its their adult-skewing ratings that tell the more compelling story.
As The Washington Post notes, it’s not just that this past weekend’s box office was dominated by R-rated films, it’s that 2017 as a whole has already played home to a staggering number of R-rated performers, from critical darlings to horror outings and everything in between, with more on the way. Here's a sobering thought (as if we needed one): Fox's action-comedy sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, opening Friday, could do as well as its 2015 predecessor and this still would be the worst year for live-action screen comedy since, possibly, ever. As of this week, only one live-action comedy has cracked the year's top 20. That would be Girls Trip, which has taken in $114.5 million since Universal released it in July, putting it at or near the No. 19 spot, just…...

Hollywood is bonkers for metrics — there’s Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic rankings, and the classic CinemaScore, which provides a handy letter grade at the end of opening weekend for each big-screen release. It’s as easily digested as an elementary school report card, but CinemaScores don’t measure quality. They measure “movie appeal,” which boils down to one major question: Does the movie I saw reflect the movie advertised?
Movies that tend to do well on the CinemaScore curve — recent “A” movies include “Girls Trip,” “Leap!,” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” — are typically more mainstream: straightforward marketing for straightforward movies. There’s nothing wrong with marketing films to their audience. However, the system also dings films for going in unusual directions with their marketing, which is further proof that metrics may or may not correlate with quality.

Some men are willing to put it all on the line for love. Women, however, have a few more requirements.
A new survey from Topdeck Travel that polled a sample of 4,515 adults (1,090 of them Millennials ages 18-34) revealed that 20% of men are more open to taking a gap year between graduating college and entering the work force if it means meeting their next significant other. Women, however, were less inclined to travel for love, with 31% saying they’d skip the standard career trajectory if they’d return a more independent person instead.

If big-screen raunch fests about girls behaving badly have become the rule (Rough Night, Girls Trip and others), Home Again is the exception: a female-driven comedy so thoroughly sanitized that it's essentially wiped of personality.
A wan star vehicle for Reese Witherspoon, whose sharp, emotionally layered turn in HBO's recent Big Little Lies ranks with her best, Hallie Meyers-Shyer's directorial debut is also a feeble stab at romantic screwball — a bland simulacrum of the cinematic comfort food her parents, Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer, have been serving up over the past few decades.

For the third straight week, The Hitman’s Bodyguard has beaten out Annabelle: Creation for the top spot for the box office weekend. This week, the Ryan Reynolds/Samuel L. Jackson actioner brought in $10.3 million compared to Annabelle’s $7.3 million. While, Annabelle: Creation still holds bragging rights for highest 2017 gross: $89 million compared to $54.9 million for The Hitman’s Bodyguard), the holiday box office will certainly influence these numbers and it remains to be seen if Annabelle will have the legs to stick around (though it’s four-week performance suggests that it may).
Writer/director Taylor Sheridan’s crime drama, Wind River, finished in third-place with $5.9 million (bringing its five-week total to $18.3 million). The animated adventure, Leap!, continued a decent two-week stint with $4.9 million, landing it in fourth place. Logan Lucky brought in an additional $4.4 million this week to raise its three-week total to $21.5 million for the comeback film from Steven Soderbergh.

How bad was this weekend? While it’s ever-so-slightly better than last week’s abysmal result, it is — by far — the worst for the Labor Day holiday since 1982. You’ve got to go back to 1998 to find a weaker total, but that saw nearly twice as many tickets sold at lower prices.
To some degree, it was self-fulfilling prophecy. There were no new 1,000+ film openings, and no August blockbusters that could sustain grosses. Five of the top 10 are July releases, with “Leap” the only entry to debut in the last two weeks.
The last two weekends have established a new low for moviegoing attendance — something around 8.5 million tickets sold in the U.S. and Canada, out of a combined population of 363 million. About 2.3 percent of the public went to the movies.

It’s hard to believe, but the 2017 summer movie season is already over. It seems just like yesterday we were anxiously awaiting the releases of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Wonder Woman, Dunkirk, War for the Planet of the Apes, and for a small few, possibly even Transformers: The Last Knight. All of those, and so many more, have been released and analyzed, while some have even made their way to home release already.
With Labor Day fast approaching, we thought it would be the perfect time to recap everything that happened this summer. From what movies lived up to the hype, to which ones didn’t, to even the box-office winners and losers, we’ve got you covered. So, without further ado, here is our Summer Movie Recap (2017 Edition).

Uff. what an unpleasant month this is / that was! The world continued to go insane, people are still denying climate change despite more and more frequent tragedies like what's happening in Texas and, on a more personal level, at Tfe HQ your host Nathaniel threw his back out most severely. As a result the blogging was less prolific. Now that recovery is finding some momentum (crosses fingers) expect a return to normalcy after the Labor Day holiday. First up: The Toronto International Film Festival, our favorite annual event that isn't awards show related.

“Girls Trip” was one of the summer’s hottest big-screen comedies, and anyone who’s seen the laugh-out-loud flick will recall a hilarious scene involving a grapefruit that’s put into service to aid a sexual act. Every summer movie season has its highlights and low points – but from a commercial perspective, this year's edition was mostly just bleak. The final numbers aren't in yet, but 2017 is projected to be the lowest-grossing summer since 2006. (For perspective: That was the year that the Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises first launched.) Sure, people still spend tons of money at the multiplex – the final box office tally is estimated to be around $3.8 billion. But, with a few major exceptions, there simply weren't the breakout, must-see event movies and...

Talk about the dog days of summer. This weekend marked the worst box office in this century.
If “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate) holds on to the top position for a third time next week, it would mark the lowest gross in memory to repeat again. The actioner dropped a ho-hum 53 per cent, boosted by the absence of any real competition. Count stars Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson among rare winners at the moment.
Domestic theaters grossed around $65 million in movie ticket sales this weekend. (That doesn’t count the revenue for closed circuit live showings of the Mayweather/McGregor fight which would have placed it in the Top Ten.)
That’s about seven million tickets sold total. The number is easily a record low for this century. And you have to reach back to World War II to match the attendance numbers. More people went the movies the...
