What happens when you take a San Francisco detective and retire him to the South of France? When the rights to the Dashiell Hammett character made famous by Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon” (1941) became available, writer-director Scott Frank, perhaps emboldened by his Emmy-winning successes with his western series “Godless” and chess sensation “The Queen’s Gambit,” convinced his friend Tom Fontana (“Oz”) to co-create a limited series, “Monsieur Spade” about an older Sam Spade in France.
These two writers had a blast making Spade (Clive Owen) middle-aged and grumpy — his doctor wants him to give up smoking. He’s grieving his lost wife, a Frenchwoman (Chiara Mastroianni) who left him a lovely estate. He reluctantly acts as a father figure for a teenage girl (Cara Bossom) whose mother Brigid O’Shaughnessy sent him eight years ago to Bozouls to deliver her child to her father (Jonathan Zaccaï). The plot is complicated,...

The new mystery series, A Murder At The End Of The World, is creating a buzz on social media as audiences connect with the ensemble whodunit from creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij. We chatted about his involvement with the series and what it was like working with Emma Corrin and the great ensemble cast, as well as his upcoming project with Scott Frank. Check out the full interview below.

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering The Last Showing was Written by Cody Hamman, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Robert Englund terrorizing people throughout the night isn’t a rare sight to see. As the star of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, he has been in some of the most popular horror movies ever made. His performance made the dream-stalking Freddy Krueger a genre icon. But he has around one hundred and fifty screen credits where he didn’t play Freddy. With that much output, it’s not surprising that the occasional project slips completely under the radar. Today, we’re going to shine the spotlight on one of those projects. A film where Englund plays a weaselly projectionist who traps Finn Jones in a movie theatre overnight. It...

Netflix’s Castlevania animated series helped break barriers for not only its medium, but also the longstanding stigma that video game adaptations were doomed to fail. Castlevania gracefully bowed out after telling a complete story over the course of four seasons. However, it was revealed that the franchise would continue, albeit with new Castlevania series within the same universe, almost in a style that’s akin to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Castlevania: Nocturne is the first of these new Castlevania series and it follows Richter Belmont, Maria Renard, and a team of intrepid monster hunters in an apocalyptic struggle that’s set against the French Revolution. Castlevania: Nocturne builds upon its predecessor’s strong foundation and finds a careful balance that will appease both fans of the original and newcomers alike. You can read my full review of the debut season here.

Contains spoilers for Neighbours.
Last year’s announcement that Neighbours was ending prompted the return of its prodigal children. Not just the on-screen ones journeying to Ramsay Street to reunite with lost loves/burn down Lassiters/marry Paul Robinson, but also us – the Aussie soap’s lapsed viewers. We came back too, sticking one last hopeful hand into the cookie jar of nostalgia, hoping to feel… well, anything.
The only problem: Neighbours was unrecognisable. There was no Helen Daniels and Bouncer had long retired to the big farm in the sky. If you’d drifted away at some point between the third Lucy Robinson and the plane crash that turned Harold Bishop into the Erinsborough strangler, then this is for you. Here’s a handy guide to Neighbours’ current plots and characters. Never ask ‘Who’s Paige? again.

You’ve seen Women Talking, welcome to Women Swearing: Wicked Little Letters, Thea Sharrock’s fantastically funny feature puts Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman together in the filthiest pairing since Derek met Clive in the late 1970s. Set in 1920, it’s based on a story that, per the credits, is “more true than you’d think”, which, when you get to the end of it, is quite a claim. Think what a hip, modern and actually funny Carry On spoof of Call the Midwife might look like, scripted by the Coen brothers, shot with a little visual nod to Wes Anderson, and dictated by a screenwriter with Tourette Syndrome.
Throw in a bit of St. Trinian’s moral anarchy (Launder and Gilliatt version only) and you have the runaway British comedy of the year, a sometimes cry-laughing four-letter smackdown that might well benefit from the awards-season envelope currently being pushed...

This article contains spoilers for Final Fantasy 16.
The Final Fantasy 16‘s team isn’t ashamed of the many ways that HBO’s Game of Thrones influenced the latest entry in the famed RPG franchise. For the most part, they shouldn’t be. Some of Final Fantasy 16‘s best ideas were clearly inspired by that series (and the books it is based on). However, Final Fantasy 16 also suffers from some of the same flaws that eventually turned Game of Thrones into a pop culture laughingstock. None of those flaws are more bizarre than the decision to pay homage to one of Game of Thrones‘ most shameful moments.
At the risk of glossing over a ton of plot points (which this excellent video will help you catch up on), Final Fantasy‘s final moments see protagonist Clive Rosfield face off against the game’s final boss, Ultima. Yes, the legendary Ultima is...

Vampires are taking a wacky bite out of summer. In Season 5 of FX and Hulu’s “What We Do In The Shadows,” Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) looks for a vampire who can give him the transformation that Nandor the Relentless has kept from him. But it may not go as planned. The beloved comedy, which takes a mockumentary look at four vampires living in Staten Island, returns on July 14.

Now, nearly a decade later, the Mike Judge-created series will return for the first half of the 20-episode Season 8 on July 24 with the original voice cast.

Final Fantasy XVI works because of its desire to push the series in a new direction, influenced by all kinds of western media, while still celebrating its own quirky spirit. It doesn’t reinvent or subvert its original concepts — there are still crystals, chocobos, and scenery chewing villains — but it trades anime tropes and modernist sci-fi saga for a medieval, gothic fantasy built on the relationship between light and dark (emphasis on the dark). The most mature entry the series has ever seen, it delivers a ruthless and deeply personal...

It’s been a long time since I truly loved a Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy Xii, which came out in 2006, was a somewhat forgettable distraction that mostly left me longing for another Vagrant Story. Unfairly maligned Final Fantasy Xiii (2009) had a little je ne sais quoi but didn’t fully hit the mark. My aversion to Tetsuya Nomura’s nonsensical storytelling in Kingdom Hearts pushed me to skip Final Fantasy Xv entirely. Even the 1990s nostalgia-baiting Final Fantasy VII Remake dared to amaze, right up until it didn’t.

Not always a show comes along that makes you forget that you’re watching it because your job entails watching it to write a recap afterward, but when it does, you become engrossed in the show, forgetting your duties for a while. Showtime’s Waco: Aftermath is such a show where you stay so invested in the story that after a while, you start hating the characters who are portrayed as evil while rooting for the good guys. However, Waco: Aftermath was not a work of fiction but a dramatization of the trial that happened after the tragedy at Mt. Carmel in Waco, Texas. What you’ll read below is an assortment of my opinions after finishing the finale of Waco: Aftermath, and there’s a chance that you may not agree with some of the opinions I’ve shared. Episode 4 of Saint X ended with John noticing Emily talking to a guy in front of their home. She has begun her assignment of making Gogo trust her. In Alison’s timeline, we have Ethan as a suspect alongside Edwin. In Gogo’s timeline, we find out that Sara has married Edwin, but we do not know if Edwin has come to New York or is still in the Caribbean. Saint X Episode 5 is an oxymoron. “Infidelity Can Be Fatal” is not as over-the-top thrilling as it sounds. It is very predictable, but it manages to hold onto our attention and makes us wait to find out how things turn out compared to our expectations. It has a tight plot, and it’s a good watch too. While some things are absurd, we accept them and move on with the storytelling, knowing that it’s just a film.

Naomi Ackie in Tristar pictures I Wanna Dance With Somebody
With a little over a week left in 2022, it looks like the cinematic musical “biopic” of the year will be Elvis, so who’s next…oh, wait, we’ve got another one sneaking in just under the wire. And it turns out that this singer (according to many music charts and lists) had more hits than the King or the “Fab Four”. And all after “E” had “left the building”, er…planet. Aside from success, she certainly had enough drama in her short life for a feature film (actually she was the focus of a cable TV flick and a supporting player in three others). So after the gifts are unwrapped you may want to head to the multiplex for an eye and ear-full of Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
Naturally, the story begins on the concert stage,...

Singer-actor Whitney Houston’s life ended tragically in 2012, but her voice is resounding as loudly as it has at any time in the years since, with this weekend’s long-awaited release of the biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” coming on top of the RCA and Legacy labels’ 30th anniversary re-release of the blockbuster “Bodyguard” soundtrack.
“I feel as great about the new movie, as I have always felt about her music,” says Clive Davis, the legendary label executive who founded Arista Records in 1974 and signed Whitney Houston in 1983, eventually becoming a confidante and father figure.
Davis’ latest role is that of co-producer of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” a job he relishes while acknowledging his actors with pride. “Stanley (Tucci) does a wonderful job of playing me. And though the vocals are all Whitney’s, the actress, Naomi Ackie, does a remarkable performance and really captures Whitney. I wouldn...

‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ Review: A Basic Whitney Houston Biopic Sets Her Wikipedia Page to Song
A music biopic so broad and hacky it makes “Jersey Boys” seem like “All that Jazz,” Kasi Lemmons’ well-acted but laughably trite “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” is an anonymous portrait of a singular artist — a by-the-numbers “Behind the Music” episode that needs 146 minutes to say almost nothing about a once-in-a-lifetime voice. Not even “Bohemian Rhapsody” was so obviously written by the guy who wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as Anthony McCarten’s algorithmic script
Here’s young Whitney as a choir soloist at the New Jersey church where she discovers her love for music. There she is at Arista Records’ HQ listening to the demo track for her future hit single, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”. Once her career takes off, the rest of her life is reduced to a diminishingly unsophisticated series of reactions to whatever happened in the previous scene, which doesn’t express Houston’s struggle...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Monarch Episode 7, “About Last Night.”] Monarch answers the questions we’ve had through the first six episodes: Who’s dead, and what exactly happened? The body is Nicky’s (Anna Friel) ex-husband Clive (Adam Croasdell), but there are a few steps before he’s buried. First, he attacks Nicky, and Gigi (Beth Ditto) intervenes, hitting him in the head with the award seen in a previous flashforward. Then, Albie (Trace Adkins) goes to bury him, only for it to turn out that Clive’s not as dead as he thought … yet. The Roman patriarch has to put a few bullets in him to finish the job. Showrunner Jon Feldman takes us inside that reveal and teases what’s ahead. When did you know you’d be killing off Clive? Jon Feldman: As we started to undergo this murder mystery subplot, we went through all the possible suspects and potential people...

So many secrets and lies are circulating in the Roman family, and it's only a matter of time before they're all out in the open.
The most significant developments from Monarch Season 1 Episode 7 are that we know who the "body" was and which people were responsible for the supposed "murder." Albie and Nicky are aware of Catt's origins.
But the biggest threat to the Romans right now is a family friend unwittingly causing potential harm when trying to help.
We got some more Susan Sarandon in the hour as flashbacks to Dottie and Albie's fight gave us insight into how a man who has so many secrets and told so many lies got the moniker "The Texas Truthteller."
Dottie wasn't one to trifle with; interestingly, she and Albie have had so many issues in their marriage for the entirety of it.
Albie was a hellraiser, even family recently, and he...
