The Rocky movies are pretty synonymous with cinema. You’ve got every kind of movie you could want, the intimate Academy Award-winning underdog original and its closely knit sequel, the fun and cheesy spectacles of Rocky III and Rocky IV, the misguided attempt to recapture its roots with Rocky V, and the old war horse, broken down, one-last-fight inspiration of Rocky Balboa. The story behind the first movie is as engaging as the movie itself, which is why it will be the subject of a new movie from Peter Farrelly called I Play Rocky.
Blu-ray.com has unveiled that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will now be releasing the Rocky series, sans Creed spin-offs, with the new 4K Ultra HD Rocky: Ultimate Knockout Collection. The set will encompass all versions of the commercially released films in Uhd, which includes both the theatrical version of Rocky IV and the recut Rocky Vs.

The following list explores such movie stars who have proven the critics wrong.
Tom Cruise – Vanilla Sky
Renowned for his action-packed roles, Tom Cruise showcased his versatile acting prowess in the 2001 psychological thriller Vanilla Sky. Just take a sneaky peak back on the movies we’ve covered so far on our Arnie Revisited series, and the Austrian Oak had already covered several genres in his rise from bodybuilder to Hollywood icon. Raw Deal and Commando were straight-up action movies, while his work as Conan was an epic mix of action and fantasy. You can even argue that The Terminator is a classic 80s slasher flick, and not simply the revolutionary sci-fi masterpiece it’s generally regarded as. However, he hadn’t managed to blend both horror and science fiction in any of his previous movies, in the way he did with the film we’re focusing on in today’s episode – Predator. It was such a huge success for both star and franchise that it not only helped to further cement Arnie as a Hollywood icon, but also created a franchise packed with sequels, a prequel,...

The 1990s represented a golden epoch for action cinema. This was the time which saw VHS and its digitized successor DVD introduce a whole new generation of fans to the magic of stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And those titans from the ‘80s still claimed big wins, too, at the box office and home media via the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Demolition Man, and Cliffhanger.
It was also the decade that saw audiences turn out in droves to theaters and rental stores to catch a glimpse of Steven Seagal’s flying fists in movies like Under Siege or Jean-Claude Van Damme and his trademark splits in Timecop; Jackie Chan finally got the larger American fanbase he so richly deserved thanks to the Rush Hour movies while Bruce Willis gave us Die Hard With A Vengeance, the best of all the Die Hard sequels, before pivoting...

After training Tommy “The Machine” Gunn and Adonis “Donnie” Johnson, Sylvester Stallone may enter WWE to train ex-Bloodline member Sami Zayn. The actor became synonymous with his character Rocky Balboa in the boxing world and played a crucial role in widening the reach of the sport in America. However, one former WWE legend is not happy about this news and shared that he would denounce the star’s Rocky films if his WWE entry ever happened.

The legend is none other than pro wrestling veteran Vince Russo. Sami Zayn had a string of bad luck in the recent past. However, his last year’s match against Roman Reigns for the title of the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion made him a people’s favorite, despite losing the match.

Sylvester Stallone paid tribute today to Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky films and died Thursday at 76.
In an emotional Instagram video post (watch it below), the three-time Oscar nominee recalled his longtime friend in a sometimes-quivering voice: “”My life was forever changed for the better the day I met Carl Weathers. … He was magic, and I was fortunate to be part of his life. … Rest in power and keep punching.”
Standing in front of an abstract painting from their Rocky days in the ring, Stallone says in the video: “Hello, everyone. Today is an incredibly sad day for me. … Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life which he says everything about it. I give him incredible credit …. because when he walked into that room, and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness, but I didn’t realize how great.

Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn asked star Henry Cavill to sport a Nehru Jacket for the upcoming film ‘Argylle’ and said that it is quite challenging to pull off that look but the actor managed to do it. Vaughn said: “I felt Henry could give me all the classic spy stuff. He can give me a wink; he can do all the things I want from a spy. Agent Argylle’s appearance is a bold, instantly iconic throwback to the ‘80s.”
“I have had an enduring obsession with the styles of that era, including the likes of Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, and the era’s signature flattops. That’s why we decided to give Argylle one,” he said.
Vaughn said that Cavill’s portrayal is great. “I needed someone who could exude the essence of a James Bond-type character, but with a twist. Whoever could play James Bond,...

Ivan Drago was Rocky Balboa’s most fearsome foe and Dolph Lundgren’s chilling performance helped turn Rocky IV into a genuine classic. Thirty years later, Drago returned in Creed II, training his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) to face off against Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan). Following the positive fan reaction to Lundgren’s return, MGM announced a Drago spinoff movie, but we haven’t heard all that much about it over the last two years.
Our own Tyler Nichols recently spoke with Dolph Lundgren about his upcoming movie, Wanted Man, and couldn’t resist asking if there was any movement on the Drago spinoff movie.

Hollywood action stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone have opened up on an old feud which they had back in their early days, which led to massive rivalry and even hatred between the two, with Stallone saying that even their DNA hated each other.
The ‘Rocky’ and ‘Terminator’ stars are close friends today, but back in the 1980s when the two were dishing out their most iconic action films such as ‘Rambo’ and ‘Predator’, they were excessively hostile against one another taking pot shots at each other in press meetings, and insulting each other on a personal level.
Allof that, however, ended in the late 1990’s as both the action stars having both in the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain, found themselves traveling together to various openings.
This ended up bringing the two closer, and soon their hatred dissipated and they became fast friends leading them to collaborate with each other...

They hated each other. Now they love each other.
That’s the story Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone copped to this evening during an interview on The Graham Norton Show.
The two action stars were often sniping at each other in the press, to the point where Stallone said that “even our DNA hated each other.”
That ended in the late 1990s. Having both invested in the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain, the two found themselves traveling together to various openings. That brought them together, and they have since become fast friends, often collaborating on projects.
Before that, things got intense.
“We were movie rivals, but we took the competitiveness to the extreme – we each had to have the best body, we had to kill more people in our films, and we had to have the biggest guns,” Schwarzenegger recalled. “It got out of control, and we tried to derail each other.

Some unfortunate news to report, folks. Burt Young, the legendary character actor who co-starred with JoBlo’s beloved Sylvester Stallone in Rocky, is dead at 83. Deadline was the first to report the news. Young famously played Rocky’s brother-in-law Paulie, Adrian’s (Talia Shire) brother, a wannabe tough guy who stays in Rocky’s corner despite everything. Young was nominated for an Oscar for the original film, and indeed, Paulie was a complex character. In the first film, he’s Adrian’s abusive older brother. By the third film, his mounting insecurity is confronted by the Italian Stallion, leading to him becoming a corner man for his climactic fight with Mr T’s Clubber Lang in Rocky III. He goes on to back him up for his bout with Ivan Drago in IV before giving power of attorney to a crooked lawyer in V, temporarily bankrupting the family, only for...

With Dolph Lundgren once again starring with Sylvester Stallone in “Expend4bles,” we recall when the two actors first worked together, on Stallone’s Rocky IV. Of course, Lundgren played Ivan Drago, a Russian boxer who comes to America to fight Rocky Balboa’s foe-turned-friend, Apollo Creed. When Lundgren fought Carl Weathers, who played Creed, in the film, they hadn’t been given the opportunity to work together much before filming their fight scene. At a fan event, Lundgren said that added a lot of authenticity to the scene, because the lack of choreography meant Weathers’s reactions were real.(Click on the media bar below to hear Sylvester Stallone) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Dolph_Lungremn_Carl_Weathers_Rocky_IV_.mp3

Barbie fever is sweeping the nation, and pink is steadily becoming the dominant color of 2023. After making over $100 million at the box office during its opening weekend, the film’s director, Greta Gerwig, is taking a victory lap, her excited steps likely fueled by the sound of Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.” Why this song in particular? Gerwig is a Rocky fan, and as it turns out, Sylvester Stallone’s Italian Stallion played a role in how Ryan Gosling’s approach to playing Ken came to be.
Speaking with Uproxx about the monumental success of Barbie, being only the second woman to direct a movie that earned $100M+ at the box office during an opening weekend, and how Stallone represents her idea of a “real man,” Gerwig gushes about finding inspiration in an unexpected resource with the Rocky movies.

Rocky Balboa had Ivan Drago. Daniel Larusso had Johnny Lawrence. And in the Jeopardy! world, James Holzhauer has Ken Jennings. The two have battled with their wits, knowledge, and intellect on the game show over the years. It’s a rivalry built on mutual respect with their record-breaking credentials speaking for themselves. Jennings overcame Holzhauer and Brad Rutter in Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time in 2020. So there are bragging rights there. However, the “High Roller” Holzhauer rebounded by winning the recent Jeopardy! Masters tournament with “The Professor” Jennings witnessing it firsthand as on the sidelines as show host. We caught up with Holzhauer while promoting The Chase to get his thoughts on Jennings as host of Jeopardy! and if there will ever be another quiz master showdown on the game again. Ken said he will most likely never compete on Jeopardy! again because he is terrified of facing you.

[This story contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.]
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. has now brought two intriguing what-if scenarios to fruition.
In 2018’s Creed II, Caple Jr. pitted the sons of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) against each other, and while Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) emerged the victor, the audience still felt sympathy for the Drago family, which seemed all but impossible in Rocky IV (1985). Shortly after the release of Creed II, Paramount talked to Caple Jr. about potentially helming a sequel to Travis Knight’s Bumblebee (2018), but the Ohio native didn’t want to follow up a direct sequel with another direct sequel.
A year or so later, Caple and Paramount resumed talks and agreed on a new take that was influenced by the Transformers: Beast Wars animated storyline, introducing animal-like Transformers known as the Maximals, the planet-eating big bad, Unicron, and his henchmen,...

Dolph Lundgren started his acting career with a James Bond movie (A View to a Kill) in 1985, quickly followed by Rocky IV, and then a string of action films. With a career spanning five decades, the man has had over 100 parts with only seven of those in television series, making him one busy film actor. Picking his five best is like choosing your favorite child. So, here are five of his best movies which are part of an ever-changing list of favorites.
The Punisher (1989)
An interesting take on The Punisher where Lundgren plays Frank Castle full of darkness, torment, and violence, but with a softer side that takes its time to show up. The final battle in Lady Tanaka’s home is a great watch each time the film comes on or is put on. We have had 4 Frank Castl’es on screen, and he brought one of the darkest,...

Dolph Lundgren is looking back on a time when he wanted to “punch out” his co-star Sylvester Stallone.
While appearing on a new episode of “In Depth with Graham Bensinger”, the Swedish actor, 65, recalled a tense interaction with Stallone, 76, on set of their 2010 film “The Expendables”.
“We had some good times and bad times, kinda like family to some degree,” Lundgren said of Stallone, whom he’d worked with previously on 1985’s “Rocky IV” and then again on the “Expendables” sequels, followed by 2018’s “Creed II”.

Dolph Lundgren revealed on “In Depth With Graham Bensinger” that he nearly punched Sylvester Stallone during the making of their 2010 ensemble action movie “The Expendables.” Stallone helmed the film himself, marking the second time he directed Lundgren in a movie after 1985’s “Rocky IV.”
“We had some good times and bad times, kinda like family to some degree,” Lundgren said about his long-standing working relationship with Stallone. “He was very harsh on me in a scene in ‘The Expendables’ where he kinda yelled at me in front of the whole crew and had me do about 20 takes on a scene. It was like, ‘My grandmother could do it better than that. What the fuck, what are you doing?’ You know, basically in front of everybody. And there was press there that day too, international press.”
Lundgren continued, “We took a lunch break and I remember I was kind of in tears.

If you need proof that you never know what’s going on in people’s lives before you get a look behind the beaded curtain, I’ve got a story for you. Rocky IV and The Expendables franchise star Dolph Lundgren revealed he’s been battling cancer for the past eight years. During a nationally syndicated interview on In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Lundgren said he’d been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015.
While Lundgren says he went into remission, the cancer returned with a vengeance in 2020. His doctor gave him a terminal diagnosis, saying he only had 2-3 years to live. When the actor’s cancer returned, Lundgren’s fiancée Emma Krokdal said the doctors found tumors in his lungs, spine, and kidneys. Dolph made peace with the diagnosis, thinking he would die within a finite period.
Thankfully, this report has a silver lining. Lundgren sought a second opinion from Dr.

There's been a script that nobody really liked. Now, they're, as far as I know, looking for a new writer, and to try to tap back into that world."'The Expendables' star explained that the ongoing war in Ukraine adds an extra layer of interest to a potential movie.Dolph explained: "There was a movie I did called 'Creed II', where it kind of opens, actually, in Ukraine. So, it's interesting. Now, it's more interesting than it was in 2018."The idea was to sort of go...

"Rocky IV" was my favorite movie in the franchise as an '80s kid, although the death of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) was tough to take. We knew something bad was going to happen when the showboating former champ stepped into the ring against Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), but the brutal manner in which he got destroyed was shocking. The way Apollo was left twitching on the canvas as his life ebbed away was deeply upsetting, made even worse by Drago's stone-cold delivery verdict: "If he dies, he dies."
Nowadays, the film only comes fourth in my overall assessment of the series. When you take a step back from the nostalgia and the irresistibly cheesy bombast, only two things happen in the movie. Apollo dies, then Rocky gets payback by beating the Russian fighter in his own yard. Big events, admittedly, but the rest is just filler, a mixture of...

Sylvester Stallone once returned to his Rocky franchise with the sixth feature in the boxing series Rocky Balboa. The sequel might have had a brief appearance from Carl Weathers’ Apollo Creed. But Stallone once asserted that Weathers might have wanted too much money for too little work.

The Rocky series had many antagonists for Stallone to square off against in the ring. But Stallone once felt that Carl Weathers’ Apollo Creed might have stood out from the others. "Creed III" is the first film in the, er, "Rocky Expanded Universe" to cast the Italian Stallion's narrative arc aside. It's a wise decision because there's nowhere else to go with Balboa. Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed can't keep fighting the spawn of Rocky's former foes; "Creed II" stretched this to the breaking point with Adonis facing the son of Ivan Drago, and Sylvester Stallone would've probably kept heading down this derivative route. Rocky Balboa had outlived his purpose in "Rocky."
Liberated from Stallone's purview, "Creed III" is a breath of fresh pugilistic air. Following in the footsteps of his on-screen mentor, Jordan has seized the directorial reins, and turned in a juicy, fistic melodrama that harkens back to the likes of Robert Wise's "Somebody Up There Likes Me." Tonally, at least. Visually, Jordan has imbued his film with a certain fury that is clearly influenced by anime.

Sylvester Stallone's 1985 film "Rocky IV" is quite handily the silliest in its series. Tapping into the ultra-jingoistic rhetoric of the Ronald Reagan era, "Rocky IV" saw its American title character squaring off against a Soviet super-athlete in a symbolic attempt to prove which of the world powers was ultimately stronger. /Film already wrote about the film's extended central training montage, claiming it to be one of the best of all time because it provides a parallel between the way Rocky (Stallone) trains, and the way the evil Russian Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) trains. Rocky is out of his element in Russia, where his bout with Drago is to take place. Because of this, Rocky has to find clever, low-fi ways to build in strength, including hauling logs and pressing rickshaws full of locals. Drago, meanwhile, is locked into a high-tech, computer-run athletics facility where his muscles and strength are...

For all the unbridled machismo that defines the "Rocky" franchise, more credit does need to be given to the woman that stood in Rocky Balboa's corner. Talia Shire played Adrian with a quiet resignation in "Rocky" that really tapped into the feelings of desperation that the character had before meeting the Italian Stallion. She has accepted her fate. She's going to work in that pet store forever and take care of her abusive brother Paulie until he croaks. Shire portrays Adrian's devastating shyness beautifully. When Rocky starts chipping away at her defense, she slowly starts to come alive the more attention is paid to her. Rocky and Adrian's relationship is about transformation, and in order for Rocky to truly believe in himself, he needs to make Adrian believe in herself first. The closer they become, their dynamic changes gradually until Adrian is the one that's holding Rocky up, not the other way around.

The "Creed" series is ready for another round. With its box-office record-setting opening weekend now in the rearview, fans are already clamoring for information on what is coming next for Michael B. Jordan and Adonis Creed. Thanks to an exclusive report from Deadline, it sounds like the answer is "more." After scoring a Tko with audiences for his directorial debut on Creed III, Michael B. Jordan could get back into the ring to develop a Creed-Verse with Amazon. According to Deadline, Jordan is dancing around a universe-spanning deal for Creed-related film and television projects. While there have been multiple meetings and attempts to build a Rocky universe, the latest dealings could yield hard-hitting results for the franchise’s future. The seriousness of the deal is the result of Creed III‘s success, which has earned $110M+ worldwide at the time of this posting.
Details about the deal remain shrouded in mystery, though Deadline says an anime series connected to the Rocky IP is possible in addition to a live-action spinoff series. The idea of building a project around Adonis Creed’s daughter, Amara, is also being discussed. The anime project sounds likely, as Jordan is an out-and-proud anime fan.

The underdog story is a classic cinematic trope for a reason. We follow our heroes from humble beginnings with few believing in them, but through grit and determination, they become self-made champions. It's the American dream personified on the big screen. Then, director Ryan Coogler, star Michael B. Jordan, and Stallone found a way to breathe new life into the franchise. In a world of spinoffs, reboots, and retreads, it's rare to get one that works as well as the first "Creed."
