The Star Wars universe is rich with complex and compelling characters, especially its villains. These antagonists drive the narrative forward, offering challenges and intrigue that captivate fans across generations. With the debut of “murder-mystery” show The Acolyte this week on Disney+ we thought we’d take a look at the ten best villains in the Star Wars saga:
1. Darth Vader
Darth Vader, originally Anakin Skywalker, is perhaps the most iconic villain in cinematic history. His fall from a heroic Jedi Knight to a Sith Lord embodies the tragic nature of the Star Wars saga. Vader’s imposing presence, deep voice, and complex redemption arc make him a standout character.
2. Emperor Palpatine (Darth Sidious)
Emperor Palpatine is the mastermind behind the fall of the Jedi Order and the rise of the Galactic Empire. His cunning manipulation of both the political and Sith arenas showcases his unparalleled strategic mind. His return in...

There are plenty of new characters for Star Wars fans to love in The Acolyte, but the internet seems to be especially fond of one Jedi in particular – Yord Fandar (Charlie Barnett). Affectionately dubbing themselves the “Yord Horde,” fans can’t help but love the nerdy awkwardness of Yord’s by-the-book adherence to Jedi rules and regulations. He’s the guy in class who reminds the teacher that they forgot to assign homework, and we love him for it.

Amandla Stenberg’s The Acolyte is the new addition to Disney’s Star Wars roster, which continues the House of Mouse’s formula to bank on small-screen releases since the debacle of The Rise of Skywalker. Moreover, following the mixed reception to the sequel trilogy, in recent years, fans have been warming up to the prequel trilogy, which was initially panned upon their release.
But while the public perception towards the prequels has changed over time, a majority still holds the original Star Wars trilogy at the top, and for good reason. However, Stenberg, who is not new to controversies, had a surprising answer when asked about her favorite entry in the franchise.

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ recently dropped the first two episodes. The show takes place during the High Republic era or 100 years before the chronologically first movie in the franchise, ‘The Phantom Menace.’
Although High Republic Era was already touched upon in ‘Young Jedi Adventures,’ this is the first time this time period is adapted to live-action which means there is a lot of potential to explore some of the Expanded Universe stories, particularly non-canon stories related to Darth Plagueis.
Darth Plagueis was a Sith Lord who lived before the events of the Skywalker Saga, he is already dead during the events of Phantom Menace, killed by his own apprentice Palpatine, and while we can’t possibly see the two of them interact in this setting due to Palpatine only being in his 50s during the events of ‘Phantom Menace,’ we might as well see young Plagueis.

The first episode of The Acolyte introduced us to Mae, a resident of the planet Brendok, who was going around the galaxy killing Jedi. Mae was out for revenge, and given how that’s the path to the Dark Side, a Sith Lord had gotten his hands on her soul and was mentoring her toward a catastrophic future. Meanwhile, her twin sister, Osha, was left to face the repercussions of her actions. When Osha’s former master, Sol, learned about this, he was perplexed because he knew Osha wasn’t a killer. So, he decided to bring her to Coruscant herself instead of leaving her at the mercy of a bunch of droids. When Sol started talking about Mae starting a fire in Brendok, which allegedly killed Mae and the rest of her and Osha’s tribe, it became clear that Sol and Osha had no idea that Mae was alive,...

Review: The reception for Disney-era Star Wars has been uneven, to say the least. While The Force Awakens broke box office records, The Last Jedi became the most divisive sequel of all time, and The Rise of Skywalker pooped the bed for most fans. Still, the anthology films Rogue One and Solo have dedicated fans, which is more than can be said for any of the Disney+ Star Wars series outside of The Mandalorian and Andor. Created by George Lucas, the Star Wars franchise is one of the most epic sagas ever told. From the fall of Anakin Skywalker to Luke Skywalker’s eventual defeat of the Emperor, it is a classic tale of good vs evil. As a result, it is obvious that the saga required a compelling antagonist and the Sith Lord Palpatine might just be one of the best villains in the franchise.

A Key Sith Phrase In The Acolyte’s second trailer, there’s either an obvious clue about the Sith Lord’s identity or a massive misdirect. When we see Manny Jacinto’s character, Qimir, he tells Mae (Amandla Stenberg) that “peace is a lie.” That particular choice of words pricked up the ears of many a Star Wars fan, who recognized it as the first line of the Code of the Sith. We got a good feeling about this: Disney+’s latest Star Wars special is revealing Darth Jar Jar.
The trailer (below) for the animated special Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy unveils a menacing Sith Lord version of the much-maligned Gungan character, who was infamously introduced in 1999’s The Phantom Menace.

He finds himself thrust into adventure in a new, wondrously wild and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and the fate of all depends on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the pieces back together.”

Samuel L. Jackson is an acting legend who has starred in numerous movies of all genres. Among his major movies are School Daze (1988), Do the Right Thing (1989), Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), Oldboy (2013), and Chi-Raq (2015), Tarantino’s films Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), Django Unchained (2012), and The Hateful Eight (2015), but he also has two extremely popular roles in his filmography – that of Nick Fury in the MCU, as well as that of Mace Windu in the Star Wars franchise.
We know that Mace Windu died in The Revenge of the Sith, but the character had already been a fan favorite by that moment and since then, there have been numerous calls for Windu to return to the series, implying that the character did not die during the fated battle against Palpatine. Samuel L. Jackson was recently asked about it and he made his opinion on the matter quite clear.

While the state of the Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic remake may be questionable, what we know for sure is that Hot Toys is blowing it out of the water with this Darth Revan premium action figure!
The Sith Lord, who found him/herself with a bad case of forgetfulness, is represented here in copper-tinted glory! In typical Hot Toys fashion, the 12″ figure is loaded with fine detail, excellent soft goods, and a pair of LED lightsabers. Sadly, you’re stuck with only red and purple.
Darth Revan will be available in three editions, two of which (Collector’s Edition Sith and Jedi) come with a commemorative coin. The Exclusive and Collector Edition of Revan are now available to pre-order through Sideshow. Interestingly, no matter which one you pick, they’re priced at $270.

One of the most famous scenes in the Star Wars film saga almost didn’t happen at all. Although the movie was always going to end with Anakin Skywalker losing a few limbs, the stunt team behind Prequel Trilogy closer originally choreographed a different climax for Revenge of the Sith‘s final duel between brothers. In fact, an earlier version of the fight on Mustafar didn’t have Obi-Wan getting the high ground on Anakin at all; there was no cocky last leap from young Skywalker to seal his fate.
As Revenge of the Sith stunt coordinator Nick Gillard explained to Empire magazine, “Originally, they both land on the side of the lava flow and immediately start fighting. Anakin disarms Obi and grabs him by the throat. He’s about to chop his head off, but Obi sucks the lightsaber into his hand in a defensive move to try and block it,...

A second season of Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi was first announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, and fans have since been eager to see which characters this season’s installments would be about. Would we see more stories from Ahsoka and Count Dooku, or different characters entirely? Nearly a year after it was first announced, we have a first look at the new season, now named Tales of the Empire.
Tales of the Empire will focus on the stories of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka’s Lady Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and, to the delight of many, former Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee (Meredith Salenger), who was last seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

David Dastmalchian thought it was a mistake when he was offered the chance to play the lead role in 'Late Night with the Devil'.The 48-year-old actor stars in the horror flick as the 1970s talk show host Jack Delroy but had reservations about taking the part in the movie from sibling directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes.David told The Hollywood Reporter: "I looked at the log line and said, 'Which lead?' There's no way anybody thinks I'm the guy to play a late-night talk show host."There's a lot of roles that I can imagine myself slipping into: Bond villain, Sith Lord, cult leader, creepy suspect number 17, but charming, witty, funny talk show host?"David doubted that he would be able to do the part justice but had an "incredible experience" working with the Cairnes brothers and is looking forward to the rest of the world seeing the film.

For Late Night with the Devil star David Dastmalchian, all roads lead to and from Christopher Nolan.
In 2007, Dastmalchian was a struggling local theater actor in Chicago, and when Nolan’s The Dark Knight set up shop in the Windy City, he went through a circuitous casting process before eventually landing a part in his very first feature film. 14 years later, as Dastmalchian began to prepare for the role of the charismatic but troubled late-night talk show host Jack Delroy in Cameron and Colin Cairnes’ Late Night with the Devil, his greatest inspiration...

Disney is giving us a blast from the past with its next entry in the Star Wars series, as showrunner Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) takes us back to the golden age of the High Republic. Going back further on the timeline than live-action Star Wars has before, The Acolyte takes place at the height of the Jedi Order’s power, 100 years before Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn blundered their trade negotiations in The Phantom Menace.
With a largely new cast, the first trailer for The Acolyte gave us a look at Amandla Stenberg‘s rogue warrior Mae, The Matrix’s Carrie-Anne Moss and Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae as Jedi Masters, and Solo’s Joonas Suotamo playing the Wookiee Jedi Kelnacca. But despite the many Jedi in the story, Headland has said that the show also tackles the story of the Sith and how they managed to infiltrate and corrupt the Republic and the Jedi Order.

Praise the Mortis Gods! "The Acolyte" is giving us a reason to get excited about live-action "Star Wars" television again while we patiently await the second season of "Andor." After "The Mandalorian" season 3 saw its namesake frustratingly sidelined in favor of setting up Dave Filoni's larger New Republic arc and "Ahsoka" season 1 left me and others feeling like the convergence of live-action and animated "Star Wars" is a real mixed blessing, "Russian Doll" co-creator Leslye Headland is here to change things up. "The Acolyte" is set in the High Republic era, a period that's been explored in the ongoing High Republic publishing initiative but has never before been realized in live-action. That alone should be enough to pique the interest of anyone who's ready for a "Star Wars" series that's less beholden to setting up future shows and can exist more independently.

The release of the sequel to the iconic sci-fi film Dune by director Denis Villeneuve brought immense joy to sci-fi enthusiasts. However, amidst their delight, a surprising realization dawned upon them as they delved into the intricate layers of Dune‘s narrative.
Comparing it to another beloved sci-fi franchise, Star Wars, fans couldn’t help but notice striking parallels and inspirations drawn by the latter from the former.
Timothee Chalamet and Austin Butler in Dune 2
As they immersed themselves in the rich tapestry of Dune‘s universe, fans discerned elements within the Skywalker Saga, that seemed eerily reminiscent of Herbert’s masterpiece. From themes of power struggles and dynastic conflicts to the portrayal of mystical forces and chosen ones, the echoes of Dune reverberated throughout the galaxy far, far away.

George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise was a big gamble, for he did not believe the first movie would ever make it. Yet now, the franchise is one of the biggest and most successful cinematic universes of all time and even made Lucas over $10 billion rich at one point.

As the legendary Anakin Skywalker, it was on Hayden Christensen to show us how an idealistic teenager lost his way, becoming cinema’s most iconic villain. He talks exclusively to Empire about taking on Tusken Raiders, younglings, and the weight of expectations.
This is where the fun begins. For years, we’d wondered — dreamed — how it happened. How the almost mythical figure, Anakin Skywalker — Luke’s dad! — came to be clad in pitch-black armour, serving as the right-hand enforcer of galactic tyrant Emperor Palpatine, and striking fear through the hearts of everyone in the galaxy, Force-choking his way across the stars. Then finally, after over two decades of us pondering it all, George Lucas’ prequel trilogy was announced, promising to answer our feverish, lingering questions.

Part of the beauty of the "Star Wars" universe is how big and populated it is. Not only did the original trilogy deliver groundbreaking visual effects, but George Lucas wrote enough backstory and worldbuilding while working on the first film to sustain decades' worth of "Star Wars" movies. That worldbuilding also resulted in hundreds of smaller background characters that became overnight fan favorites once the movies — and the merchandise — started arriving. Even the most inconsequential one-off characters suddenly became beloved by audiences despite there being little to no official information available about them — at least, until we got entire novels and books devoted to every Glup Shitto and Max Rebo out there.
Of course, not every character gets that treatment. In fact, there is one character we only know the name of because the actor decided to take matters into his own hands during shooting — Quarsh Panaka. You remember that guy,...

There’s no denying that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker certainly made some… interesting storytelling choices, especially with its main villain, who somehow returned to strike back at Rey and the Resistance. Not only does the movie reveal that Supreme Leader Snoke was just one of Emperor Palpatine’s clones all along, and that he’s been secretly preparing for the return of the true Empire and the Sith on Exegol, but we also get the biggest twist of all: Rey (Daisy Ridley) is his granddaughter.
The Emperor’s family tree is more complicated than that, though. Technically, Rey’s father, Dathan, is a failed clone of Palpatine rather than a biological child, but that hasn’t stopped fans from asking the big question: did the Emperor, in fact, have sex at some point during the saga? It’s a question that has haunted many, even if the answer...

Star Wars Prequel Cast Revisits The Trilogy 25 Years Later In Empire’s Anniversary Issue – Exclusive
Back in 1999, a brand new era in the galaxy far, far away came to life. George Lucas’ Star Wars prequels told an epic tale of fallen Jedi, forbidden romance, and the dismantling of democracy – assembling a whole new cast to inhabit his vast space-opera. The stars who entered that sandbox took a bold step, not only working at the frontier of digital filmmaking techniques, but conjuring a Star Wars saga that stood apart visually and tonally from the beloved originals. The likes of Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson and Ian McDiarmid became an entire generation’s set of Star Wars heroes (and villains) – and they all spoke to Empire for our epic new issue, celebrating 25 years of the trilogy.
For Ewan McGregor, the pressure of playing the young Obi-Wan Kenobi was eased by working alongside Liam Neeson – whose Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn suffers a noble end in...

The 2008 cartoon series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" is now a heralded piece of the "Star Wars" legacy, filling in plenty of gaps in the "Star Wars" prequel film trilogy. It also finally told the story of the eponymous conflict — which was first namedropped all the way back in the original 1977 "Star Wars." "The Clone Wars" was a story that had been speculated on for more than 40 years. What if I told you, though, that the story had already been recounted by 2008?
In between the theatrical releases of "Attack of the Clones" (in 2002) and "Revenge of the Sith" (in 2005), Lucasfilm launched "The Clone Wars Multimedia Project." This was a collection of tie-in media telling the story between the films of a galaxy at war.
The essentials of the project include:

The state of the Star Wars franchise in cinemas remains a bit unclear. Earlier this month, Lucasfilm announced The Mandalorian & Grogu, a movie to be directed by Jon Favreau based on the popular Disney+ series and that will set our lovable father and son duo on a brand-new adventure. It’s being fast-tracked into production this year, which suggests it’ll be the first new Star Wars movie to come out since The Rise of Skywalker bowed in Dec. 2019.
Interestingly, before that surprise announcement last week, it really seemed like the first movie on Lucasfilm’s docket was the untitled Rey movie, which is set to pick up 15 years after the events of the Sequel Trilogy. It’ll bring back Daisy Ridley to the galaxy far, far away to “build the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her,” as...

When Ahsoka Tano was first introduced, she served as our eyes and ears in the "Star Wars" universe, the audience surrogate for this new chapter of the story, like Luke before her, or like Ezra Bridger in "Star Wars Rebels" and Rey in the new trilogy. Just as audiences grew up watching the show, they watched Ahsoka grow up before their eyes, going from hotheaded Padawan to one of the most powerful and wise Jedi ever.
It makes sense, then, that she would finally get her own TV show with the eponymous "Ahsoka," as Dave Filoni takes the character he co-created and brings her to the foreground in yet another galactic conflict. The show has been walking a fine line between being a standalone story and a continuation of several stories. There's the Mando-Verse story of the slow rise of the Imperial Remnant, but also the pay-off to the finale...

With an audience that knows every nook and cranny of the Star Wars franchise, executive producer and director Deborah Chow took on a monumental challenge by agreeing to continue the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) in between the prequel and original trilogies. Development of the McGregor-led project had already become its own saga, beginning in 2017, with Stephan Daldry tackling a stand-alone Obi-Wan film. In 2019, when the feature evolved into a limited series for Disney+, Chow stepped in for Daldry, shepherding the project through numerous rewrites and Covid restrictions until cameras finally rolled in spring 2021.

Once Chow signed on, the series’ biggest surprise was already in the works, as the kidnapping of 10-year-old Leia Organa would compel Obi-Wan to depart Tatooine, leaving young Luke Skywalker temporarily unprotected. It also was essential to Chow and McGregor that Christensen get a second bite...

When it comes to the mythology of "Star Wars," fans might find that there is more knowledge and detail in expanded universe lore than there is on the screen. Darth Vader's suit, for instance, might merely look like an intimidating life-support system at first glance, and audiences can rightly interpret his mask as the respirator that keeps his lungs functioning. The black, swooping helmet he wears was simply part of an Empire uniform, meant to evoke helmets worn by Nazi soldiers during World War II. What did Darth Vader look like under the mask? In 1977, no one knew. The buttons and panels on Darth Vader's chest clearly fulfilled some sort of medical or engineering function, but audiences would never be told explicitly what they did in any of the "Star Wars" movies.

‘Star Wars’ franchise’s newest addition to the series aka ‘Ahsoka’ has debuted a new one minute promo titled ‘Masters and Apprentices’. The promo follows Ahsoka battling both Imperial Inquisitors as well as a bunch of rogue Force users who are neither Jedi nor Sith, while meeting up with ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ series characters Sabrine Wren and Hera Sendulla. The story follows Ahsoka Tano’s character played by Rosario Dawson a good long while after the aftermath of Order 66 and the establishment of the Empire, with most of the Jedi exterminated and the rest of the survivors hiding.
Following the ‘Rebels’ series, the show will serve as somewhat of an extension to it, with even other characters such as Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn making an appearance, along with Ahsoka’s former master Anankin Skywalker and now dreaded Sith Lord, Darth Vader.

Listen, what I'm about to tell you should be no surprise to two groups: hardcore "Star Wars" nerds and the terminally ancient fanboy, both terms which describe your dedicated writer. But something to consider is that "Star Wars" fandom has evolved since I was a kid. The original trilogy is no longer the agreed-upon "Star Wars" gold standard anymore. You have the kids who grew up on the prequels, and they prefer those films, much to the frustration of us oldies.
Then there are the Dave Filoni stans who consider "The Clone Wars" and "Rebels" to be the pinnacle of "Star Wars" storytelling. I think there's a lot of prequel lover crossover with that faction, by the way, but the crazy thing is that those folks now aren't that far away from being the old fuddy-duddies shaking their fists at the people who like the newer "Star Wars" offerings in...

Did you know that John Mollo, the costume designer for "Star Wars: A New Hope," had never had any costume design experience before landing that gig? It's kind of amazing when you consider just how iconic and influential the look of all the outfits in "Star Wars" have become. What got him the job was his expertise in historical military costumes, which was of great interest to George Lucas. He wanted someone who was fluent in real-world costumes, not a Hollywood costume designer who had experience in science fiction. For Lucas, "Star Wars" only worked if we recognized enough of our world in it to help ease the audience into the sci-fi/fantasy of it all.
Obviously, Mollo didn't work on these striking costumes himself. He had a dedicated team and was working off of not only George Lucas's script descriptions but also Ralph McQuarrie's production art. That said,...

The finale to “The Mandalorian” Season 3 aired on Disney, and it showed our heroes, Mando and his green alien child Grogu, and Bo-Katan Kryze, coming out victorious at the end of the episode. The big bad for the last three seasons, Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), was shown to have died when a massive fleet crashed into his base as the fires consumed him. However, this isn’t the first time Gideon has cheated death, so the question remains: is he actually dead? Here we explore the possibilities regarding this burning question, but before any of you come at us, we’re simply discussing theories about Gideon’s return.
Of course, the show is called “The Mandalorian,” so it’d be rather anti-climactic to have the protagonist Din Djarin die at the end of the season or be replaced by another protagonist, like Bo-Katan Kryze, for example. Hence, as much as...

"Star Wars" is full of memorable and instantly recognizable villains. As relatable as the heroes are, it is the villains who often steal the show. Whether it's a Sith like Darth Vader or Darth Maul, or even a non-Force user like Boba Fett or Captain Phasma. Indeed, there is no shortage of great villains with distinct personalities in the "Star Wars" galaxy.
Then there's Moff Gideon, the main antagonist of the three seasons of "The Mandalorian" to date. He is also a psycho who wants to hurt Baby Yoda.

On almost any other day, a train car full of Mandalorians, Grand Admiral Thrawns, Ahsokas, and Obi-Wans may have seemed strange. This article contains spoilers for the season 3 premiere of "The Mandalorian."
Chances are, observant fans will be able to find echoes of previous franchise installments hidden within nearly any modern "Star Wars" movie or show. "The Mandalorian" might represent the platonic ideal of this trend, especially since the recent season 3 premiere already seems to be gearing up for plenty of deep cuts, unexpected connections, and a general appreciation of all the things fans love about this series. But some parallels are a little more welcome than others, to say the least. And if one particular subplot introduced in "The Apostate," the season 3 opener, pans out the way it appears it might, well, fans are likely to receive some unwelcome flashbacks to one of the most maligned entries in the entire "Star Wars" canon.

With the proliferation of Star Wars movies, video games, novels, and television shows, fans have seen all kinds of Force powers deployed by both Sith and Jedi. Did you know Force users could whip up storms? "Rebels" viewers do! How about using the Force as a passive physical shield? Baby Yoda can do it all day long.
The original trilogy left the impression that the Force operated by a certain set of unspoken rules, forging a connection with the universe that anyone could tap into and wield. That changed when the prequel movies introduced the midi-chlorians, making the Force something that's only available through genetic transmission. However, what matters is not who holds these powers, but how they're used. Making an enemy become so dizzy that they vomit might impress your date, but it's not necessarily an effective technique when you're battling a Sith lord, no matter how much Force lightning your lightsaber can absorb.

Back when he still had full creative control of Star Wars, George Lucas spent a lot of time revisiting and tweaking his finished films, much to the frustration of fans who’d grown up with the theatrical releases. Using (at the time) innovative CGI, the creator retroactively added characters to scenes where they hadn’t appeared before, or completely changed how iconic moments played out (e.g. Han shot first). It began with the Star Wars Special Editions in the late ’90s, which remastered the Original Trilogy for a new generation of fans, and Lucas continued to re-cut these classic movies until right before he sold his studio to Disney. It’s why when the first three Star Wars movies dropped on Disney+, Greedo now said “Maclunkey” to Han right before the scoundrel killed him, further complicating an already controversial scene.
