Ava DuVernay has ended her rich overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, multiple sources confirm to Variety.
While news of this decision comes amid the writers strike, the contract talks were unrelated. DuVernay’s deal was set to expire on May 31 and the two parties came to a “mutual decision not to renew.”
DuVernay signed the multi-year agreement in 2018, which was reported to be valued at $100 million, following the parties’ successful collaboration on OWN’s “Queen Sugar,” which signed off last year after seven seasons.
“Ava DuVernay is one of the leading lights in our industry, a brilliantly talented writer, producer, director and entrepreneur whose ability to inspire with her art is exceeded only by her ability to entertain,” former Warner Bros. TV chief Peter Roth said in a statement announcing the pact. (Channing Dungey is the current chairman and CEO of Wbtvg.)

TV executives just took a broad sword to the broadcast networks’ collective roster of existing series. In a swarm of cancellation and renewal announcements ahead of next week’s upfronts, NBC, The CW, and CBS scrapped a combined 13 series. Yes, all in one day.
The CW cancelled Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship’s superhero series “Naomi” after one season, just two days after the finale aired. Fellow CW DC series “Batwoman” and “Legends of Tomorrow” were shown the door previously.
The network announced that the upcoming Season 4 finale of “Legacies” will now serve as the series finale. The end of the third iteration of the “Vampire Diaries” ends the 13-year reign of the blood-thirsty franchise.
Additionally on Thursday, The CW axed “Roswell, New Mexico,” “The 4400,” “Dynasty,” “In the Dark,” and the “Charmed” reboot. “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In the Dark” still have summer seasons to burn off; both will...

Superhero drama Naomi has lost its fight with fate. The CW offering has been cancelled after one season, TVLine has learned.
Despite a promising launch — the show’s January debut ranked as The CW’s third-most watched season premiere of the 2021-22 season — its audience has since fallen by more than 40 percent. That said, its audience still tied for No. 5 among all CW dramas. The May 10 season finale will now serve as a series finale as well.

Exclusive: Ava DuVernay’s superhero drama Naomi will not be back for a second season on the CW.
Just two days after the Kaci Walfall-led DC series wrapped up its often pre-empted first season with a DuVernay & Jill Blankenship penned two-hour finale, the for-sale CW pulled the plug Thursday. With that, we hear that the Array Filmworks and Warner Bros TV produced show is talking to other outlets about continuing Naomi’s tale on streaming or higher up the dial.

When it comes to Shonda Rhimes’ success, there is no “Grey” area.
The “Grey’s Anatomy” creator redefined the network TV landscape before moving on to Netflix in an unprecedented first-look deal for the streamer. There, Rhimes has produced the record-breaking “Bridgerton” and created viral true crime sensation “Inventing Anna,” all while paving the way for other Black female showrunners, according to SXSW virtual panel “Female Showrunners Breaking the Mold.”
At the event, select OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network and The CW filmmakers discussed the “Shonda effect” on modern television, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Produced by Warner Bros Television and Ava DuVernay’s Array, the “Breaking the Mold” panel included Dee Harris-Lawrence (“All Rise”), Jill Blankenship (“Naomi”), Shaz Bennett (“Queen Sugar”), Janine Sherman Barrois (“The Kings of Napa”), and Teri Schaffer and Raynelle Swilling (“Cherish the Day”). TVLine editor Mekeisha Madden Toby moderated the virtual panel.

“It’s so great for representation and it’s also grounded in normalization,” says Naomi star Kaci Walfall of the barrier breaking CW superhero series from Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship. “So it’s a story that is just about a 16-year old girl whose Black, who happens to be a superhero and I think that is supercool ‘cause it’s not something we see, it’s not something we see,” Walfall added.
“Younger me would really look up to that.”
Walfall joined us today with EP Blankenship on Hero Nation. You can hear on the podcast here:

Naomi is the latest entry in The CW’s slate of shows based on DC Comics’ characters. Written and executive produced by Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship, and adapted from the comic book of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell for the Wonder Comics imprint, the show follows the journey of a cool, confident, comic book–loving teenager as she pursues her hidden destiny.
Naomi looks at superheroes from the perspective of the small town folks who read about it in the news. Naomi runs a Superman fan site. He is fiction in her world… until he’s not. When she misses a Superman sighting—or what everyone assumes is a “stunt”—in her small town of Port Oswego, she jumps at the opportunity to investigate the appearance. The more she looks into the stunt, the closer she gets to learning the truth about herself.

Even though high schooler Naomi (Kaci Walfall) tells us in her opening voiceover that “everyone has a superhero origin story,” hers immediately looks different enough from most on TV to stand apart. For one, she follows in the footsteps of Javicia Leslie as The CW’s second Black woman to lead a DC superhero show, albeit one as different from “Batwoman” in tone and storyline as can be. From executive producers Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship — and with canny, fluid pilot direction by Amanda Marsalis — the CW series feels something like if “Superman” blended up weekly comics with the sensibilities of a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or “Secret Files of Alex Mack.” For another, Walfall’s Naomi isn’t some moody outcast waiting in the wings for something amazing to happen to her, as is the case for so many other potential heroes. In fact, as the first episode conveys...

Strap in, everybody, it’s time for another year of television.
After 2021 saw the “small screen” grow even bigger thanks to the introduction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and one South Korean phenomenon, 2022 is set to try it out all over again.
Marvel is still set to be a factor this year with shows like Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk all pegged for releases on 2022. DC is also getting in on the action with The Suicide Squad‘s Peacemaker getting his own HBO Max show in January. And that’s not even to mention the arrival of the oldest franchise of them all: The Lord of The Rings.
Throughout it all in 2022, we expect many shows to step out of the shadows of relative obscurity and surprise us with their quality and success. Before all that, however, here are some sure things to look forward to in the year to come.

After grabbing her bags to get to the center of action Asap, Naomi skateboards through the hallways of her school and reaches her destination. The CW has given out series orders to the DC project “Naomi” and “All American: Homecoming,” a spinoff of the high school football drama “All American.”
In addition, the network has decided to rework its pilot for “Powerpuff,” a live-action followup to the animated series “The Powerpuff Girls.” The show’s four leads — Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault, and Donald Faison — remain attached to the project, as does the remainder of the cast and the creative team behind the show. The CW’s “Wonder Girl,” based on the DC character created by Joëlle Jones, is no longer moving forward at the network. Greg Berlanti had been on board to executive produce.
“I was very proud of the script I wrote,” tweeted writer and executive producer Dailyn Rodriguez on Friday. “Wish I could’ve shared the world I created, but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. Thanks for everyone’s enthusiasm. It meant a lot to me.”
The prospective one-hour drama centered on Latina Dreamer Yara Flor, born to an Amazonian warrior and Brazilian river god. Rodriguez previously served as showrunner on several seasons of USA Network’s “Queen of the South” and has worked on “The Night Shift,” “The Glade,” “Lie to Me,” “Ugly Betty,” and other series. Alongside Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden had been set to produce for Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Pilot season at The CW is happening after all.
The youth-skewing broadcaster has handed pilot orders to three projects: Ava DuVernay’s superhero drama Naomi, the live-action reboot of The Powerpuff Girls and a millennial nun dramedy exec produced by Jennie Snyder Urman.
The network has also ordered a reboot of classic sci-fi drama The 4400 straight-to-series.
There had been some question as to whether the network would go completely straight-to-series for next broadcast season, given the uncertainty around the pandemic, but CW chairman Mark Pedowitz has decided to stick with the pilot process.
“I believe in pilots, I believe you see things in pilots,” he told Deadline last month.
The three pilot orders do not, however, spell the end of the road for the network’s other development projects, and sources tell Deadline that there may be room for more. It has also developed the Greg Berlanti-produced Wonder Girl...

The CW has given a straight-to-series order for a reboot of “The 4400,” while three other projects are moving forward with pilots, including Ava DuVernay’s “Naomi” and the “Powerpuff Girls” live-action series.
“The 4400” is based on the USA Network series of the same name, which ran for four seasons starting in 2004 and featured a then-unknown Mahershala Ali.
In the CW version, 4,400 overlooked, undervalued or otherwise marginalized people who vanished without a trace over the last 100 years are all returned in an instant, having not aged a day and with no memory of what happened to them. As the government races to analyze the potential threat and contain the story, the 4,400 themselves must grapple with the fact that they’ve been returned with a few… upgrades, and the increasing likelihood that they were all brought back now for a specific reason.

A cult sci-fi series is making a comeback. The CW has given a straight-to-series order to The 4400, a reimagining of the 2004 USA Network drama. It hails from Riverdale co-executive producer Ariana Jackson and Anna Fricke, who successfully rebooted Walker, Texas Ranger for the CW.
The 4400 is part of four greenlights given by the CW on Tuesday. The network, which last year did not do traditional pilots because of the coronavirus pandemic, ordering four projects straight-to-series, will film at least three pilots in 2021: Diablo Cody and Berlanti Prods.’ Powerpuff Girls; Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship’s DC-themed Naomi; and a millennial nun dramedy from Jennie Snyder Urman, Claire Rothrock & Ryann Weir. The CW has made a number of orders for the 2021-2022 season, including a pilot order for the live-action “Powerpuff Girls” series.
In total, The CW announced three pilot orders and one straight-to-series pickup, with the latter being a reboot of the USA Network series “The 4400.” The other two pilots are for the DC project “Naomi” from Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship and an untitled religious dramedy from Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir. Cassidy began with “Arrow” in the show’s pilot, though she was killed off in Season 4 before returned in Season 6. McNamara first joined “Arrow” in its seventh season. Harkavy had been with “Arrow” since Season 5 and has also appeared in multiple “Arrow”-verse shows.
Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Beth Schwartz, Marc Guggenheim, Jill Blankenship and Oscar Balderrama were all executive producers on the project, with Schwartz,...
