Andrea Riseborough — the shapeshifting actress whose name is on everyone’s lips — has lived in Los Angeles since 2010. But right now she’s back in her native England, where she’s filming the HBO miniseries The Palace, a period political satire co-starring Kate Winslet. A swanky hotel tucked discreetly at the end of a narrow alleyway in London’s Soho district serves as her temporary home. Riseborough, 41, enters the hotel’s busy restaurant precisely at the agreed-upon hour — 3:30 p.m. Tea time, although she will be drinking coffee.
Nothing in her demeanor suggests someone who nine days earlier had been nominated for an Academy Award — her first, no less, after 20 prolific years of dues-paying. She is petite, practically swimming in a striped wool overcoat. Her hair is cropped boyishly short — this for another recent role, playing British Vogue editor Audrey Withers in Lee. Right now, however, it gives her...

Eight shows a week, Beanie Feldstein takes the stage at the Shubert Theatre in New York City to perform in the revival of Hello, Dolly! Wearing a pastel pink bodice adorned with frilly violet lace, a bustling striped skirt and a mop of curls atop her head, the 24-year-old belts out a rousing rendition of “Motherhood” as shop girl Minnie Fay. "I stand for motherhood, America and a hot lunch for orphans / Take off your hat, sir, while your country's flag is passing," she sings alongside her co-star, Bette Midler.
It's quite a Broadway debut, one that Feldstein, who spent her formative summers at the prestigious acting camp Stagedoor Manor and her high school years obsessing over musical theater with best friend (and Dear Evan Hansen star) Ben Platt, could only have dreamed of. Being cast in the company of a legend of screen and stage in an award-winning production -- Midler won a Tony for Hello, Dolly...

Despite being overstuffed with Christmas sketches, there were few gifts to be found during this weekend’s Saturday Night Live.
James Franco returned to Studio 8H to promote The Disaster Artist, a movie based on The Room, one of the dumbest films ever made. Ironic, since so much of his latest hosting stint consisted of aggressively dumb material.
The evening got off to a rough start with the cold open, which featured a parade of kids struggling with cue cards and asking Kenan Thompson’s Mall Santa about Sen. Al Franken, Alabama senate candidate Roy Moore and ousted Today show host Matt Lauer.

At this stage in the current ratings-challenged NFL season, tossing around the term "game-changer" may seem no more than a Hail Mary pass. However, with Sunday Night Football rising this week again and now Monday Night Football up double digits from last week's season low, things are certainly looking brighter for the league in Week 13. As The Great Christmas Light Fight (1.1/4) shined just as bright as it did last year on ABC and The Voice (1.9/7) topped the Big 4 for NBC…...

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night — or, apparently, $100 million – will stay the National Football League’s protesters from the swift completion of their appointed tasks. Rush Limbaugh floated a Hail Mary defense of Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore this week, telling viewers of his widely consumed radio show that Moore was a Democrat during the period when five women say he made sexual advances on them as teenagers. “Did you know that before 1992, when a lot of this was going on, that Judge Moore was a Democrat,” said Limbaugh in comments published Tuesday. “While he was a Democrat, nobody said a word. When he supposedly was attracted to inappropriately aged girls, he was a Democrat.” Moore was likely heading for an easy win in the.

Seth Meyers took a Closer Look at the Hail Mary tax-cut plan being pushed by the Gop after Tuesday’s stunning election losses. The plan would increase taxes on many middle-class families while slashing corporate taxes and leaving in place a break for golf course owners. “Tax cuts are to the Republican party what ‘Piano Man’ is to Billy Joel,” Meyers said at the top of Thursday’s Late Night. “Whenever they think they’re losing the crowd and people are heading for the…...

"If you were in New York -- in gay New York, in queer New York -- during her lifetime, you knew Marsha," documentarian David France says of his latest film's subject, Marsha P. Johnson. "She would call out your name or she would call out, "Hi, doll" and she was dispensing this kind of joy. Her joy was her form of resistance…When '69 happened and the mindset changed within the community and there was an agreement across the board to advocate for liberty, for freedom, nobody really knew what that looked like and Marsha modeled it. She just put it on. She said, 'This is what it's going to be like.' She threw off all convention and she said, 'Freedom is going to be truly free.'"

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Outlander” Season 3 Episode 1, “The Battle Joined.”]
Unrequited Love
At its heart, Diana Gabaldon’s saga is a tale of romance about how love conquers all: war, continents, and even time travel. Viewers have caught on with their own passionate and often outspoken love for Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall/Fraser. And that makes a third season, marked by the lovers having been separated for nearly two decades, a tricky thing. Rather than picking up where the second season left off — with Claire, her daughter Brianna, and historian Roger tracking down the presumed dead Jamie through the history books — “Outlander” returned to the period just after Jamie and Claire’s separation to dig into some of that lost time. With 20 years to cover, there’s certainly a lot of story to incorporate, but the more writers fall down that rabbit hole the longer they separate the couple people are waiting to see. That makes this season a hard,...

Studios have a lot riding on performance of big-budget tentpoles, and it’s often more challenging and expensive to market those films with so many competitors beside them on calendar. Netfix's Luke Cage was good, not great, but it was a decent watch. I still put the other 3 seasons of Marvel shows previously aired above it, and the show could have been better had they not killed off one of the best villains halfway through the series. There was excellent buildup to Mahershala Ali's character (don't call me) Cottonmouth, and in an effort to give one episode a nudge, they sacrificed him for the entire season, as he was pushed off a balcony to his death by his sister around midseries. This may have worked if this was a weekly show instead of a binge, but alas, I believe it...

He's been trying to pin down the vibe of his new movie, and after a few false starts, the 50-year-old filmmaker thinks he may have found it. "So play that song in your head for a second." He waits for a few moments, so the sound of the old-timey crooner's 1943 take on the American standard can echo through his listener's skull. "Ok, now switch over to the Buzzcocks' 'Why Can't I Touch It?'" he says,...

Attendees at a recent Sri Lankan Christmas carol service may have had a raunchier sing-a-long than they intended.
A booklet distributed at the Dec. 11 “Joy to the World 2016” event accidentally included Tupac’s “Hail Mary” instead of the traditional Christian prayer, according to CNN — and the rapper’s version is definitely not suitable for a church gathering.
The printed lyrics include lines such as “Revenge is like the sweetest joy next to gettin’ p—-” and “I’ll be down in the dark/Thuggin’ eternal through my heart,” as well as references to violence.

Count Kiss among the musical artists who won’t be playing Donald Trump’s inauguration. A TMZ cameraman caught up with rocker Gene Simmons and his wife Shannon Tweed last night, when the paparazzi asked the big question point blank: “Hey Gene, you’re the rock & roll Donald Trump — will you play the inauguration?” “No!” Tweed yelled in response for her hubby a number of times. She literally covered Simmons’ mouth so the “Celebrity Apprentice” alum couldn’t reply personally. Donald Trump is so displeased with his team’s inability to lock in A-list talent for his inauguration events next month that he’s ordered a “Hail Mary” shakeup of his recruiters to try to book performers, a person familiar with the situation told TheWrap. Mark Burnett, who produces “Celebrity Apprentice” with Trump and has been overseeing entertainment for inauguration festivities, has brought in talent recruiter Suzanne Bender, a former “Dancing With the Stars” and “American Idol” booker, to end an effective freeze-out by Hollywood, the insider said. Bender also worked on Burnett’s “StarMaker,” a short-lived singing competition hosted by P. Diddy that aired.

The site is asking readers to donate $1 a month via the crowdfunding platform Patreon, and it needs about $7,000 total a month to cover operating costs. Molly Sims is beyond ready to meet the newest addition to her family.
The Las Vegas alum, who is expecting her third child with husband Scott Stuber, attended George Clooney's Casamigos Tequila Halloween party at a private residence in Beverly Hills, California, on Friday, where she told Et’s Brendon Geoffrion she's in the process of brainstorming names for the baby.

"I love [the names] Stella and Ruby and Marlow and Mya and Mia," she said. "And if it's a boy, I love Wesley and Finley and Dutch and Wilder. I have so many. My husband's addicted to Nameberry, so he literally makes like a PowerPoint presentation."
They will be able to shorten that list in half soon, however.
"We're not there [yet], but we're going to find out [the gender] in a week," she gushed to Et. "We weren't going to do it, [but] I can't stand it."

Dismissing this week’s multiple accusations against Donald Trump of sexual assault as nothing more than his opposition’s “Hail Mary pass,” right-wing pot-stirrer Ann Coulter, even more agitated than usual if that’s possible, told Bill Maher Friday that Trump supporters have long been aware of their candidate’s “baggage.” “No one is voting for Donald Trump because of his character or personality,” Coulter said on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher. “We never were. While some occult horror films hastily summon demons and creatures, other religiously-tinged enchanters like A Dark Song dabble more in moral challenges and heavenly perversion. Liam Gavin’s satanic ritual invests in the not-so-calm before any heretic storm, and the mindset of someone who’s willing to embrace help from dark realms. Don’t worry, a righteous, pound-for-pound payoff awaits patient fans come Gavin’s hellbound culmination, but we’re pulled in equally by ritualistic offerings and ominous warnings that needen’t rely on monsters and mayhem. Once Gavin’s main characters seal themselves inside what could be a devilish tomb, prime cultist practices lead to a bewitching story sealed with a bloody kiss – genre love without a Ouija board or expected preachiness.

Tonight on Thursday, September 8, the NFL launches its regular season with a rematch of last February’s Super Bowl. The game is minus one now-retired Hall of Famer, though plenty of interest remains in everyone who’s still playing. But after years of cord cutting, softening ratings, and a summer that saw declining viewership of NBC’s Olympics and MTV’s Video Music Awards, can the NFL throw a Hail Mary this season and fend off viewer flight to digital medial? Or will the league’s festering issues such as concussion pathology further hasten TV’s stumbling transition to an ad-challenged online future?

Mubi is showing the Stray Cat Rock series in the United States from August 29 - October 23, 2016High on snorted glue and really, really pissed off, the Stray Cat Rock series takes a switchblade to the Japanese Old Guard. Released in five parts during 1970 and 1971, the series, with its unabashed feminist, anti-colonialist and anti-militaristic politics, is a surprisingly detailed and sprawling account of both the radical spirit that intoxicated the air and the racist, sexist and nationalist sentiments that were planning a coup in Japan around the same time. Packaged in a consumable genre form, as ubiquitous as the films’ reoccurring Coke bottles, the series is an effective bait-and-switch, a “fuck you” from inside the system. As Japanese studios were falling apart and Hollywood imperialism was claiming more and more of the box-office pie chart, the ruling class welcomed its own critique, commodifying the anti-establishment sentiments that had crossed the Pacific.

Aging much better than a freezer burnt, half eaten cake, Happy Birthday to Me (1981) stands out as one of the better ones from the golden era of slashers, when the major studios weren’t afraid to throw some blood soaked (Canadian) coin at a B level concept, and in the process giving it some A list icing.
The Canadian ties? Filmed in Montreal when tax credits were still flying fast and furious, Happy was one of Columbia Pictures early ‘80s ventures into the horror world. (Graduation Day, released the same year, was the breadwinner of the two.) Recruiting the Canadian producing juggernaut of Andre Link and John Dunning (David Cronenberg’s cohorts on his mid ‘70s output, Shivers and Rabid), Columbia was guaranteed a good return on their investment. Of course, the Canuck connection doesn’t stop there – the cast includes such faces of Canadiana as Lawrence Dane (Scanners), Jack Blum...
