Ned Benson’s sophomore feature, The Greatest Hits, is a romantic drama following a young woman who travels back in time anytime she hears a song to the last time and place she heard it with her late boyfriend. It’s a charming film with an incredible soundtrack that will delight any musicophile, not that you would expect any less.
We at FandomWire spoke with Benson and the film’s composer, Ryan Lott (frontman of Son Lux and Oscar nominee for his work on Everything Everywhere All at Once), about their work on the film. Keep reading to find out what they had to say.
The Greatest Hits Interview
In The Greatest Hits, more so than many other films driven by music, the soundtrack essentially functions as a character. We asked the team behind the film where the song choices came into play — whether it was during the writing process or later in production.

When Wcth Season 10 ended, co-creator Brian Bird promised that there would be a Hope Valley wedding in Season 11. This was after Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) put the kibash on her wedding to Lucas (Chris McNally). A lot of Hearties were disappointed that there was no wedding after she dumped her fiancé.
But, now, the premiere of When Calls The Heart Season 11 is coming soon. That means the aforementioned wedding will be happening sometime this spring. But, who are the lucky couple? Could it be Elizabeth and Nathan (Kevin McGarry)? All of the promo seems to indicate a romance between the Mountie and the teacher. But, that does not seem to be in the cards just yet.
Already, it seems that Hallmark has revealed who that couple could be. While there is no confirmation, there was a major hint offered. Can you guess who may be getting married this season?

Singer, actor, producer and activist Harry Belafonte, who spawned a calypso craze in the U.S. with his music and blazed new trails for African-American performers, has died of congestive heart failure at his Manhattan home, reports ‘Variety’. He was 96.
An award-winning Broadway performer and a versatile recording and concert star of the 1950s, notes ‘Variety’, the lithe, handsome Harold George Belafonte, who grew up in New York and Jamaica, became one of the first black leading men in Hollywood. He later branched into production work on theatrical films and telepics.
He’ll be remembered forever for his ageless ‘Banana Boat Song (Day-o)’, which Tim Burton employed to bright effect in his 1988 comedy ‘Beetlejuice’, reports ‘Variety’. And Belafonte also provided early employment to a future folk icon: His 1962 album ‘Midnight Special’ featured harmonica work by Bob Dylan.

Warning: contains spoilers for Endeavour Series 9 Episode 3 ‘Exeunt’.
For the most part, the Endeavour finale kept its feet on the ground and provided answers to long-held fan questions. One scene however, set a new mystery. Why, between saying goodbye to Fred in Radcliffe Square and attending his choir’s Blenheim Palace rehearsal, does Endeavour go alone to a churchyard and fire a gun?
It’s not just any gun, but Fred Thursday’s Webley service revolver, a war memento that’s made various appearances in Endeavour since Series 1, and most recently used in a shoot-out with Di Lott’s goons. Fred didn’t pack it for the removal men with the rest of his belongings, and has it with him when he and Endeavour say an emotional goodbye. “Why don’t you take this,” he asks. “You might need it, if you’re staying.”
Endeavour nods and places the gun...

Warning: contains spoilers for Endeavour Series 9 Episode 3 ‘Exeunt’.
That was one for the Morse faithful. The last time fans had seen Arthur Lott was in Endeavour’s 2012 pilot episode. Then a detective sergeant, Lott had been run out of Oxford by Fred Thursday for having corrupt connections to local criminals. His departure left Thursday short of a bagman, which opened up a position for a certain bright young constable from Carshall Newtown, and the rest, as they say, is history.
In the Endeavour finale, Lott (Danny Webb) returned to Oxford and stepped out from the shadows to reveal himself as the string-pulling enforcer behind the Blenheim Vale cover-up. Lott and a cabal of corrupt London officers were the ones issuing threats, bullets and hotshots to keep the child abuse scandal quiet. Lott was even behind the Series 5 loss of Fred Thursday’s life savings. Here’s his story on the show.

With funereal imagery and talk of death, the Endeavour finale presaged tragedy, but then took its leave with merciful care. Its characters were dispatched like a fond parent putting to bed a favourite child. All survived, and went away with assurances to us about their futures. Bright, DeBryn, Miss Frazil, Jim, Jakes, and the Thursdays were generously waved off into the sunshine in an emotional ending.
All survived. But did they? The one character we knew had to live past the finale’s credits was, in a cryptic way that befits this playful series, perhaps its sole victim. This whole time, we’ve been clocking up the many and frequent portents of Fred’s death, forgetting that this ending was always destined to symbolically kill off somebody else – Endeavour, to leave behind Morse. Just Morse. That was perhaps the significance of the gunshot in the churchyard,...

Son Lux is the first band ever to be nominated for best original score at the Oscars with Everything Everywhere All at Once, and this year they’re the only composer to own noms in original score and original song the latter for their collaboration with Mitski and Oscar winner/former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne with “This is a Life”, the end credits song of the A24 movie.

David Byrne will perform his Oscar-nominated song “This Is a Life” from Everything Everywhere All at Once at the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony with Son Lux and the film’s Best Supporting Actress nominee Stephanie Hsu.

It’s anybody’s game: this is a rare year when any of the five original-score nominees could win the Oscar. Two of the nominees are previous winners, two more are past nominees; only one is a newcomer, and it’s a three-man ensemble.
Four films are period pieces: an admired German-language war film, a character study set against the Irish civil war, an epic of late 1920s Hollywood, and a coming-of-age story for a young filmmaker in the ‘50s and ‘60s; the fifth is a wild, anarchic tale of a Chinese American family that saves the universe.
And the nominees are:
“All Quiet on the Western Front”
For this adaptation of the Erich Maria Remarque classic, German composer Volker Bertelmann used his great-grandmother’s turn-of-the-century harmonium, a pump organ whose carefully mic’d interior noises sounded to him like “a war machine.”
Bertelmann’s scary three-note “destruction” motive — which...

This year’s Oscar song competition is the usual mix of musical superstars and intriguing unknowns. But for the first time in 30 years, four out of the five entries have a past Oscar winner among their writers.
And for only the 14th time in Oscar history, one of the nominated songs is not sung in English; “Naatu Naatu” is the fourth nominee to be performed in an Indian language (including two from 2008’s “Slumdog Millionaire” and one from 2012’s “Life of Pi”).
“Applause” from “Tell It Like a Woman”
Diane Warren, who recently received an Honorary Oscar for her body of work, earned her 14th competitive nomination for this little-seen anthology of seven short films made by women directors. “I needed a song that could tie it all together,” she says.
Sofia Carson sings what Warren calls “a positive, empowering song. A lot of times we humans don’t love ourselves enough.

Ryan Coogler‘s “Black Panther” made history four years ago when it won the first Oscar for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film — in fact, it won three: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Now, the highly anticipated sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has been nominated for five Academy Awards and could very likely win the same number of trophies. Just like last time around, the sequel is the favorite to win Best Costume Design for Ruth E. Carter. Its other potential victories are for a pair of A-list superstars: Angela Bassett in Best Supporting Actress and Rihanna in Best Song. (“Wakanda” is also nominated for Best Makeup & Hairstyling and Best Visual Effects.)

Ninety-year-old John Williams received his 53rd nomination, and a team of composers was nominated for original score for only the eighth time in Oscar history during this morning’s Academy Awards nominations.
Yet, despite the presence of two women and three African-American composers on this year’s 15-film shortlist, none made the final five. So Chanda Dancy (“Devotion”) and Hildur Guðnadóttir (“Women Talking”) were left off, as were Michael Abels (“Nope”) and Terence Blanchard (“The Woman King”).
With his nomination for “The Fabelmans,” the venerable Williams, scoring his 29th film over the past 50 years for director Steven Spielberg, retains his record as the most-nominated composer and most-nominated living person.
He already has five Oscars, including three for Spielberg, and according to Academy statistics is also believed to be the oldest nominee in a competitive award category.

David Byrne, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the most talented and influential singer-songwriters of the last 50 years. An Oscar and Tony winner, Byrne is also a 2019 lifetime achievement award Grammy winner and 2002 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the band for which he was principal songwriter, lead singer and guitarist from its formation in 1975 through its breakup in 1991, Talking Heads.
Byrne has been described by the New York Times as “an underground icon who danced across genres as if they were all part of one vast amplified stage” and someone who “has spent his whole career blurring the distinction between pop culture and highbrow art.” And Talking Heads have been called, by the same publication, “the most consistently adventurous band to have emerged from rock’s new wave of the mid-1970s” and...

When “Everything Everywhere All at Once” directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as Daniels) asked the band Son Lux to create the score for their movie, the musicians were delightfully surprised. “We were a little caught of guard because it felt like they had really investigated where we were coming from as a band,” explains Rafiq Bhatia. The directors had already combed through the band’s library of music and determined they were the perfect fit. So the Son Lux trio of Bhatia, Ryann Lott and Ian Chang dove headfirst into the multiverse. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The Daniels were specific in their requirements of the film’s score: music would be essential in helping the audience differentiate the many worlds that Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) leaps through. They appreciated Son Lux’s ability to bring together extreme opposites within their music, and believed that this quality would serve the story.

The Porter‘s second season is especially meaningful in light of the fact...
