Almost two years ago, the decades-long struggle to bring an adaptation of the beloved video game franchise "Halo" to life finally resulted in, well, a seriously underwhelming Paramount+ show. The fact that the live-action debut of the Master Chief, his Spartan super-soldiers, and their epic war against the alien Covenant had to be relegated to a streaming service, as opposed to receiving the full red carpet treatment on the big screen, was probably an indictment in and of itself. It spoke poorly of this irrevocably Silicon Valley-influenced studio system we currently find ourselves in, and of the lack of ambition and imagination of the decisionmakers involved. Ultimately, it also revealed our own shortcomings as an audience -- one that couldn't simply be satisfied with a number of tremendously well-realized stories told in their perfect medium.
So when season 1 of "Halo" premiered, with all the pressure in the world to live...

The group is forced to separate in the latest episode of The Walking Dead prequel, Fear The Walking Dead...
This review contains spoilers.
2.7 Shiva
One of the things The Walking Dead does every season is scatter the survivors to the four winds for mid-season finales, then they bring them back together over the course of the next half of the season. Taking a page from Hershel's farm once again, Fear The Walking Dead ends the episode with the cast scattered around the Mexican countryside. On one side, there are zombies. On the other side, angry workers looking to get revenge for their dead relatives. In the middle, as always, Victor Strand and his allies, who find themselves on the outs after wreaking a little havoc in the supposed safe zone.
The cracks appeared almost immediately. After all, Celia worked pretty hard at extracting Nick, the most vulnerable one of the group,...

“The pilot and the first couple of two-hour movies were the thing that really cemented it as legitimate science fiction. … Then we sort of got off the rails a little bit.” — Patrick Duffy to Famous Monsters magazine
Dallas and Step By Step television star Patrick Duffy returns to his underwater roots with an all-new adventure in book form based on his first major prime-time TV show, The Man From Atlantis, to be published in June. He spoke exclusively to Famous Monsters of Filmland editor David Weiner.
From marathon underwater filming sessions in which he had to hold his breath for up to two minutes at a time to those revealing yellow swim trunks — and how they “neutralized” his gender details for television — the candid Duffy reflects on his classic ’70s show and also previews his new novel — with plans to write a trilogy — based on Man From Atlantis.

“People are always going to react the way they react, and that’s the joy and terribleness of the Internet.” — Paul Feig to Famous Monsters magazine
The all-new Ghostbusters are powering up their proton packs for a big-screen summer release on July 15. While many franchise fans are excited for the female-driven reset of the beloved ’80s comedy starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, a very vocal faction of the Internet has expressed its distaste for the reboot concept and its first teaser trailer.
At Famous Monsters of Filmland, we always give any film the benefit of the doubt before watching it, and wanted to give accomplished Ghostbusters director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy) an opportunity to not only share his creative inspirations for approaching the new film — along with sharing his comedy-casting criteria — but to address those adamantly opposed to his film, despite not having even seen the finished product.

James Cameron has already begun production on his new Avatar movies — four entirely new films, as he personally announced at CinemaCon last week — and the Oscar winner exclusively tells Famous Monsters of Filmland executive editor David Weiner of his highly anticipated endeavor, “It’s going to be probably the most challenging thing I’ve ever done.”
While detailing the production and lessons learned while making Aliens on the 1986 Sci-Fi classic’s upcoming 30th anniversary for a cover story in the June issue of Famous Monsters, Cameron revealed new details on his ambitious Avatar sequels production, including how he plans to shoot all films concurrently, not back-to-back; that he plans to use more real-world photographic references for the films; and that he has no intention to go up against the new Star Wars films:

Famous Monsters’ beloved editor and founder Forrest J Ackerman is sadly missed, but as we near his centennial birthday in November and are plotting out a blowout birthday, we thought we’d gather some of his friends together to remember who he was and how he changed pop culture forever.
After a screening of the 2014 documentary Uncle Forry’S Ackermansions, Famous Monsters exec editor David Weiner gathered FM’s publisher, Philip Kim; the film’s director and cowriter, Strephon Taylor; and one of Sci-Fi’s classic authors Jean Marie Stine to share recollections of everybody’s favorite uncle.
Taylor says he was lucky to be able to tour both of Forry’s houses and was able to collect things on his tours for the film. Fans also submitted images, which gave him material he would have never had access to otherwise.
Stine pointed out that “Forry loved the mag, the puns he hated,...

A Nightmare On Elm Street heroine Heather Langenkamp took to the stage today to give us insight into the Elm Street legacy, her documentary I Am Nancy, and what contemporary character she thinks is a modern-day Nancy Thompson.
Moderated by FM executive editor David Weiner, Langenkamp told the crowded theater of film lovers what sparked her desire to produce the documentary, I Am Nancy, which puts the spotlight on her Elm Street character. She called director Wes Craven and his assistant didn’t know who she was. It didn’t strike her as noteworthy until later, and it was her sister-in-law who was particularly irked, asking why Nancy wasn’t the focus of the adulation instead of Freddy Krueger. Langenkamp didn’t know. She told her, “It’s just the way it is. It’s Freddy mania. Not Nancy mania.”

The Truth is Out There! The X-Files returns to TV on January 24th, kicking off a six-episode miniseries event on Fox with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back in fine form as Mulder and Scully.
FM Editor David Weiner spoke with X-Files creator Chris Carter about the impetus to bring the show back to television, how it addresses world changes over the past decade, and what to expect from the new episodes.
Famous Monsters: Do you credit fan demand and the power of social media as a critical factor in convincing the Fox brass to give the series a green light?
Chris Carter: I think it was twofold. I think that it was certainly that there is still a hard-core audience out there for it, and a vocal audience. But it’s now in fashion to bring back old titles and to dust them off and take advantage of the familiarity of titles.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has hammered home this is a franchise for a new generation. John Boyega and Daisy Ridley have carried the brunt of the promotional work, giving out interviews and photoshoots in rapid succession (that must surely leave them exhausted). The theme is clear: the original cast members are passing the metaphorical torch — and in the case of lightsabers, a literal torch — to those who will keep fighting the good fight against Space Nazis™. One person who Hasn’T been doing press? The mysteriously missing Mark Hamill. Despite his key status within the Star Wars universe, no one has seen hide nor hair of Luke Skywalker in the trailer or merchandising. For all we know, he’s turned to the Dark Side or has taken up moisture farming in his old age. While Hamill is still mum on the details, the actor finally broke his silence...

Over at my other haunt, Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule, there is currently posted, in honor of Halloween week, what I think are two very special treats (and possibly tricks). The first is a very challenging frame grab quiz in which readers are asked to guess the titles of 31 movies based on eerie images that may or may not be so easy to identify. The other is a special edition of the traditional interview-type quiz I occasionally come up devoted entirely to the harrowing world of horror. It features the usual batch of questions for which there are no wrong answers, only your answers, which makes it much more fun to fill out and especially to read. As usual, it’s taking me a while to get around to submitting my own answers to the quiz, but in the creeping shadow of the approaching holiday I thought I...

In our ongoing recap of last week's Ultimate Horror Poll -- in which over 100 genre experts helped determine the 100 greatest horror movies of all time by voting for their personal "ten best" -- the time has come to take stock of every honorable mention and clarification given by the survey's participants that weren't included in the original piece. To be clear, voters weren't asked for honorable mentions specifically; but a handful felt strongly enough about their "bubbling under" choices to list them anyway (which proved extraordinarily useful in helping break ties on the Top 100). See below for a full listing, as well as explanations from Bloody-Disgusting founder/editor-in-chief Brad Miska and director Corin Hardy ("The Hallow") on why they voted the way they did. Honorable Mentions: Barbara Crampton (Actor, "Re-Animator") Dracula (1931) Jaws (1975) Nosferatu (1922) Poltergeist (1982) Vampyr (1932) Brad Miska (Founder/Editor-in-Chief, Bloody-Disgusting.com; Producer) -- See Full Explanations Below Beetlejuice (1988) Bill & Ted's...

Crammed in a metal tube over 40,000 feet in the air is one of the worst situations to be in when the zombie infection hits, but that's exactly where AMC is taking viewers in an upcoming half-hour special that will feature a future Fear The Walking Dead character.
EW reports that AMC is developing a standalone special set in the shared world of Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead. The half-hour special / prequel will follow "a group of passengers facing a walker attack on an airline while in flight. One character who survives that encounter will then join the cast of Fear the Walking Dead in season 2."
Currently untitled, this infection-in-the-air story takes place during the outset of the zombie apocalypse. The special will premiere online and will also be shown on TV in separate segments during the commercial break slots of The Walking Dead Season 6.

When it was announced in March that Stephen King's classic horror novel Misery was getting the Broadway treatment, Elizabeth Marvel was intended to play the juicy role of number-one fan and number-one torturous motivator Annie Wilkes on stage. Due to House of Cards commitments, however, Marvel has left the project and Laurie Metcalf has joined it in her place.
Variety reports that Laurie Metcalf will play Annie Wilkes in the Misery Broadway play. Widely known for her stellar turn as Jackie Harris on Roseanne in addition to a plethora of other TV and film credits, Metcalf is perhaps best known to horror fans for her intense, unflinching portrayal as Mrs. Loomis in Scream 2.
As Wilkes, Metcalf will inflict pain on author Paul Sheldon, played by Bruce Willis in his Broadway debut. Metcalf is no stranger to the stage, having performed both off Broadway in Domesticated and on Broadway in The Other Place.

Number one fans can be flattering, but Annie Wilkes comes on a little too strong, and Bruce Willis is about to find out just how strong when he makes his Broadway debut in Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures' stage adaptation of one of Stephen King's most chilling novels: Misery.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Bruce Willis will star as author Paul Sheldon opposite Elizabeth Marvel (Other Desert Cities, House Of Cards) as Annie Wilkes in Misery, the Broadway adaptation of the classic 1987 novel that was adapted to film in 1990 by Rob Reiner. The play is scribed by William Goldman (The Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), who also penned the screenplay for the film adaptation. The stage version of Misery made its world premiere in the fall of 2012 at Bucks County Playhouse.
Will Frears (Omnium Gatherum) will direct Misery, which will have a limited run this fall at...
