Found footage horror films have masterfully burrowed their way into the heart of the horror genre, compelling us to peek between our fingers at the screen as they blur the line between fiction and unnerving reality, whispering, “Could this actually happen?” With their handheld chaos and too-close-for-comfort storytelling, these cinematic gems have redefined what it means to be truly scared, proving that sometimes, the most terrifying monsters are those that feel like they could be lurking just outside our windows. If you’re ready to unearth some tapes, we’ve dug up 10 found footage horror movies that master the art of realism, each so convincingly crafted you might just find yourself double-checking those locks tonight.
From ghastly ghouls to paranormal activities, these films utilize hand-held chaos to bring their terrifying tales to life. But what sets them apart? Their unnerving knack for making the absurd feel utterly believable. Forget high-budget...

The Super Bowl may be all about the actual game for most, but for others it’s all about the star-studded commercials and the movie trailer premieres. The “big game” always brings out the big names, and this year we’re getting a commercial directed by – and starring! – Martin Scorsese. And because these things always come online early now, well, it’s already online.
Martin Scorsese directed the 90-second short film “Hello Down There” for website building/hosting company Squarespace this year, and you can watch the extended cut below!
“Hello Down There” is “a tale of intergalactic outreach” from Scorsese, a ripped-from-the-headlines look at a modern alien invasion that everyone’s too distracted to pay attention to.
“What does a highly advanced civilization have to do to get noticed around here?” the commercial asks. Watch the full extended version of the Super Bowl ad below to find out…

At its most basic, possession horror exploits the primal fear of losing control over your own person, usually due to a demonic entity. Victims in a possession movie are rendered mere passengers in their bodies as a sinister force takes over and destroys them from the inside. That potent combination of body horror and a complete lack of free will makes for inherently terrifying and fertile ground for exploration. While possession horror is often tied to biblical battles of good versus evil, that’s not always the case.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to demonic possession horror titles that leave conventional depictions of faith and exorcisms behind for new terrain and metaphors.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Possession horror tends to take the possession seriously, opting for full-throttle scares and intense emotional or faith-related stakes.

It seems to kick off a month-long trend dedicated to demonic horror, with April releasing The Pope’s Exorcist and Evil Dead Rise. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a universal language for loss? Imagine if in all the letting go, in all the unlearning of what was, there was something to grasp—not only a pattern to comprehend, but a way to understand each other while everything else dissolves? Oh, if we could learn the language. Maybe we’d catch how pain serrates our words before it cuts others. Maybe we too could experience the cathartic and collective wail Midsommar’s Dani felt, that bittersweet mixture of feeling our darkest of feelings without shame and in loving, nurturing hands. If loss had a language, it’d have countless dialects for innumerable sorrows.

Happy New Year and welcome back for our first Let’s Scare Bryan to Death of 2021, where I’m kicking things off with a really fun discussion with Renée Bever. You may know Bever as an artist, horror analyst, and co-host of the great Attack of the Queerwolf podcast. I already knew that this was going to be a treat given her thoughtful, empathetic, and often hilarious approach to interpreting horror films. What I did not know, however, was that when she nominated Adam Robitel’s 2014 found footage film The Taking of Deborah Logan, I was about to watch the best movie I’ve seen since I started this column.
The premise, as is the case in most found footage films, is pretty simple. A group of grad students led by young Mia (Michelle Ang) are making a documentary about Alzheimer’s disease, and the movie picks up as they...

We have an eclectic assortment of titles on tap for this week’s home media releases, including some Hammer Horror, a post-apocalyptic television series, several brilliant modern genre classics, and a handful of indie horror to boot. Classic horror fans are definitely going to want to pick up Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for Kiss of the Vampire, and if you’ve been holding out for the definitive release of A.T. White’s Starfish, your prayers have been answered with a new Deluxe Edition Blu that also includes a CD. 12 Monkeys: The Complete Series is headed to both formats on Tuesday, and if you’ve somehow missed out on seeing The Taking of Deborah Logan, you can remedy that by buying either the Blu-ray or DVD (and then thank me later).

Escape Room Movie Review: When Saw meets The Game
Escape Room movie review is out. Jumping to cash on the escape rooms trend, the movie is directed by Adam Robitel known for Insidious: The Last Key and The Taking Of Deborah Logan. Is Escape Room worth entering, find out in the movie review of Escape Room?
Important lesson learnt after watching Escape Room
When a slasher like Saw meets The Game for PG -13 audience, things are unfortunately not the same.
What is the story/plotline of Escape Room?
A psychological thriller about six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and must use their wits to find the clues or die.
Analysis
Respecting the genre and avoiding to be labeled as a spoiler (The makers had a pre release screening but an embargo on reviews going live only by Friday morning in India after 10:00 a.m) makes sense to them.

What looks like the final chapter in the Insidious saga arrives in cinemas - but is it a good January horror?
The original Insidious (2011) was a welcome return to indie horror form for director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell, who followed up their original breakthrough film, Saw, with a couple of misguided and forgettable excursions into major studio territory (anyone remember Dead Silence?). Insidious was intimate, original, a little insane and genuinely creepy; it established some of the stylistic and narrative devices that Wan would utilize for large-scale horror success with The Conjuring a couple of years later.
It was also a hit, which meant the 'we have a new horror franchise!' signs lit up at the offices of original backer Film District. So Insidious 2 came along in 2013, with Wan and Whannell taking up camera and pen again, but it proved to be an unnecessary, overplotted and often...

While no stranger to the realm of horror, filmmaker Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan) is a newcomer to the world of Insidious, as he was recently brought on to helm the latest chapter in the franchise, The Last Key. This fourth Insidious film goes back to where it all began for Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye)—her childhood home—as a dark presence has settled in that’s terrorizing the house’s new resident, and only she has the power to stop to it.
During the recent press day for Insidious: The Last Key, Daily Dead had the opportunity to chat with Robitel about coming aboard the successful franchise, and he discussed having to prove himself to Blumhouse before taking on directorial duties, his experiences collaborating with his longtime friend Lin Shaye, and the inspiration behind The Last Key’s demonic baddie.

I loved The Sixth Sense. I loved Unbreakable. As far as his directorial efforts go, I’d say that’s about the extent to which I enjoy M. Night Shyamalan. I did love Devil, which he wrote and produced, but he was not the one behind the lens on that one. Suffice it to say, when I learned that a found footage movie, directed by Shyamalan was on the horizon, I was skeptical to say the least. After all, the found footage style of horror has run its course. Once in a blue moon a solid one will come along, but for the most part, every new entry into the sub-genre comes across as little more than beating a dead Tauntaun. Imagine my surprise when a found footage movie, directed by someone I consider to be a notoriously bad director, turned out to be one of the funnest movies of...

I was about 8 years old the first time I saw the inside of a nursing home. This wasn't a senior apartment complex or an assisted living facility. It was a depressing place with fluorescently lit rooms for sleeping and a television room for visiting. And it was full of people that time forgot and especially people who forgot time.
My step-grandfather had Alzheimer's and for some reason my parents thought bringing a strange little girl to visit him would lift his spirits as if he wasn't confused enough.
I'll never forget the moment when I walked through the doors into the waiting room. An elderly woman who I had never seen before in my life bent down until she met me at eye level, smiled, and said, "I remember you when you were just a baby."

Prior to the DVD showing up in my mailbox, I had never heard of The Taking of Deborah Logan, formerly known as The Taking. No press release was sent out, no promotional still, posters or trailers, just an ominous notification from FedEX(or Ups, I can’t remember) that a package from Millennium was en route. After asking several colleagues, it would appear that almost everyone I know in the world of genre journalism, had this mysterious DVD en route. Most of us had already written it off, due to the generic sounding name, and the even less-effective front cover. A movie we’d never heard of, seen advertised, that was being pushed out without a request process? Surely that can’t be good. However, once word started trickling down from the first couple of brave souls that took it on, that the film was not only worth watching, but...

Here a trailer and clip from a creepy looking horror film called The Taking of Deborah Logan. I haven't heard of this film until recently, but it's one that I plan on checking out in the near future. It comes from producer Adam Robitel, who wrote and directed the film. He's also the producer of films such as X-Men, and my favorite Halloween horror movie ever, Trick 'r Treat. Here's the synopsis:
Mia Medina (Michelle Ang) has finally found the perfect subject for her PhD thesis film on Alzheimer’s Disease. For the next several months, cameras will record the everyday life of mother Deborah Logan (Jill Larson) and her daughter Sarah (Anne Ramsay). But as the days progress, strange things beginning to happen around Deborah that are not consistent with any findings about Alzheimer’s.
It becomes apparent that there’s something besides Alzheimer’s that has taken control of Deborah’s life.

Check out this creepy scene from The Taking Of Deborah Logan.
Mia Medina (Ang) has finally found the perfect subject for her PhD thesis film on Alzheimer’s Disease. For the next several months, cameras will record the everyday life of mother Deborah Logan (Larson) and her daughter Sarah (Ramsay). But as the days progress, strange things begin to happen around Deborah that are not consistent with any findings about Alzheimer’s.
It becomes apparent that there’s something besides Alzheimer’s that has taken control of Deborah’s life. It’s an evil that is far worse than thedebilitating disease with which she was first diagnosed.
The film was directed by Emmy nominated producer, writer, director, and actor Adam Robitel.

A rather uninteresting bulletin this week as the most notable titles are WB's Dolphin Tale 2 and its PG rating and Step Up All In and its PG-13. To go along with that it looks like Warner Home Video is planning a DVD and Blu-ray release of Sergio Leone's director's cut of Once Upon a Time in America as that too has been rated. Otherwise. I don't have much more to add. The complete bulletin is listed below. Altergeist Rated R For horror violence, language and some sexual content. Dinosaur 13 Rated PG For mild thematic elements, language and brief smoking. Dolphin Tale 2 Rated PG For some mild thematic elements. Release Date: September 19, 2014 A Good Man Rated R For violence including some grisly images, language and some sexuality/nudity. High School Exorcism Rated R For some violent images. The Keeping Room Rated R For strong violence including a sexual assault.
