Yahoo and The Weinstein Company are extending the previous 10-day pre-theatrical release of film “One Chance” on Yahoo Screen through Nov. 9. “One Chance” tells the true story of Paul Potts, a shy, bullied shop assistant by day and an amateur opera singer by night. Potts became a YouTube phenomenon and won “Britain's Got Talent.” BAFTA winner James Corden (“The History Boys”) — who will be taking over CBS's “The Late, Late Show” from Craig Ferguson – stars as Potts. The Weinstein Company opened St. Vincent on a traditional platform and it appears to have reaped rewards from that old-school approach with a solid debut in a very crowded box office weekend for limited releases.
The film by Theodore Melfi grossed over $121K in four New York and L.A. theaters this weekend after opening the Hamptons International Film Festival Thursday. For the weekend, the Bill Murray comedy averaged more than $30K and boasts the weekend’s highest per-theater average. The film led a huge pack of new openers that included festival heavy-hitters such as Sundance winners Whiplash and documentary The Overnighters as well as the faith-centered Meet The Mormons and Christian Mingle The Movie.
TWC said that St. Vincent had a 67% jump from Friday to Saturday. TWC picked up the film in the script stage for a reported $13 million. Heading into the weekend, the company said it was capitalizing...

We're not sure we can remember the last time a husband and wife battled each other for no. 1 at the box office, but it looks like that's whats in store for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner this weekend. Affleck stars in "Gone Girl," the David Fincher's thriller which has already earned over $48 million in the U.S. and should find somewhere between $20-22 million in its second frame. Garner appears opposite Steve Carell in Disney's "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" which is also expected to earn between $20-24 million over the weekend. For "Girl" it will be the second time it's trying to sneak by a competitor after the 20th Century Fox flick beat "Annabelle" by just $378,000. The other new wide releases may be close, but likely won't be battling for no. 1. Universal Pictures' "Dracula Untold" is expected to pull in $18-20 million...

Intense music drama Whiplash, already a big winner at Sundance and the Deauville American Film Festival earlier this year, should drum up plenty of audience interest in its debut this weekend, even though it faces a crowded specialty market that also features several other notable newcomers, including the Bill Murray comedy St. Vincent, Hilary Swank‘s You’re Not You and Jeremy Renner‘s Kill the Messenger. All are what I’d call “big” specialty releases, with big names attached that should attract big attention.
The weekend also includes what I’d call some “small” releases, including documentaries The Overnighters (another Sundance winner) and I Am Ali, about the former heavyweight boxing champion, alongside the Mormon Church-backed Meet the Mormons. All will be clawing for attention in a market that’s seen more than 30 films debut in the past three weeks.

Weekend Movies & TV: 'Alexander and the Terrible...,' 'Whiplash,' 'The Walking Dead,' & More (Video)
This weekend, Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner, and the entire family have a hilariously rough time in "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day," Miles Teller stars as a promising young drummer mentored by a brutal and brilliant J.K. Simmons in "Whiplash," and "The Walking Dead" returns for a highly-anticipated fifth season this Sunday evening on AMC.
Also in theaters this weekend: In "Dracula Untold," Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans) strikes a deal with dangerous supernatural forces to protect his kingdom and family against an invading army, "The Judge" stars Robert Downey Jr. as a lawyer who returns to his childhood home to defend his father (Robert Duvall) -- also the town's judge -- after he's suspected of murder. In "Kill the Messenger," a reporter (Jeremy Renner) becomes the target of a vicious smear campaign after he exposes the CIA's role in importing cocaine into California and arming Contra rebels in Nicaragua.

He’s directed rom-coms and dog-coms, films about birders and movies about fashion fiends. But now David Frankel appears ready to take on the sci-fi genre, albeit blending in a little romance for good measure, with Departure.Captain Phillips’ Billy Ray wrote the script, which draws on a real-life mid-air mystery. The film will be set in Miami in 1973 and finds a genius investigating how a 727 disappeared into thin air, only to reappear in the exact same spot ten minutes later. As the phenomenon spreads to other planes in the sky, our hero’s world is thrown into chaos and he’s given extra drive when someone he loves is on one of the craft affected. The screenplay is partly inspired by Martin Caidin’s book Ghosts Of The Air, which contains real accounts from pilots who have been through such strange anomalies. Something I didn’t realise was happening is that Netflix UK and Ireland actually has a blog and what they have been doing on the rare update is providing information on which ISP’s are actually providing the fastest service. For the last couple of months the top two have always been Virgin and BT with BT coming out on top. Surprisingly though this month it’s switched around and Virgin is on top, considering the negative feedback I always hear about them this is very interesting.
If you google ‘Netflix News’ then you can usually find this blog and check the updates because otherwise it’s not the easiest thing to find via the site. It’s not only a good way of checking that you will get a reliable service if you are just starting out but a good way of seeing whether or not it is worth...

The story of Carphone Warehouse manager turned international opera tenor Paul Potts is the subject of this feel-good drama from The Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel. James Corden proves inspirational casting as Potts, delivering a poignant performance as the working class youngster who overcame crippling shyness - and the thumbs down from Pavarotti himself - to persevere with his dream. Scene-stealing support comes from Mackenzie Crook as his loyal boss and buddy while Colm Meaney is the disappointed father who wanted him to follow his footsteps into the local steelworks.

The Weinstein Company’s experimental strategy behind Snowpiercer—which debuted VOD two weeks after opening in U.S. theaters—is still being debated, but TWC is quickly revisiting unconventional release models for One Chance, director David Frankel’s movie about Britain’s Got Talent’s unlikely opera singer Paul Potts.
The film, which stars James Corden (Begin Again) as the unassuming young man who became a YouTube sensation when he wowed Simon Cowell on British television, is scheduled to arrive in theaters this fall. But for 10 days before it opens, it will be available exclusively for free on Yahoo Screen.

On the night of June 9th 2007, a new television reality show called ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ went on air in the UK. On its first ever broadcast, a shy, unassuming man opened his mouth to sing the famous operatic aria ‘Nessun Dorma’, delivering a beautiful, stirring rendition that would change his life from that moment forward.
Swept up in the contagious emotion of Giacomo Puccini’s stunning aria, and the unlikely figure with crooked teeth and diluted confidence who had crooned it for them, the show’s three judges – Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan – stared in awe at what they had just witnessed, while the audience of 2,000 at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff erupted in a standing ovation.

We're used to the familiar (yet valid) complaints about the shortage of female roles in contemporary film, but Kevin B. Lee has found a different way to measure the Hollywood gender gap -- and finds it perfectly demonstrated by this year's Oscar nominees: "One disquieting finding from my research is that this year’s lead actors average 85 minutes on screen, but lead actresses average only 57 minutes. (When you add in supporting categories, all competing actors averaged 59 minutes, while all competing actresses averaged 42 minutes.) Last year’s results were even more imbalanced: nominated male stars averaged 100 minutes on screen to the lead actresses’ 49 minutes." Sandra Bullock's 87% of screentime in "Gravity," meanwhile, is quite the exception. [New York Times] The Weinsteins have pushed back the Us release of Golden Globe-nominated Paul Potts biopic "One Chance" again to August 29. It's totally worth the wait! (It's not.) The screen villain is as integral to film as self-serving interests are to politicians or phone hacking skills are to sleazy reporters. Unlike those villainous chumps though the screen villain actually enhances our lives by increasing our viewing pleasure.
During the last decade we’ve seen some of cinemas greatest ever bad guys. We’ve had the Joker terrorizing Gotham, Loki invading New York and Raoul Silva flirting with James Bond to name but a few. The most popular villains all possess that intangible quality known as ‘cool’ or have a certain charm about them that makes them inherently likeable no matter what they do.
There is another breed of screen villain though. The truly despicable, unlikeable ones who spend their off-screen time twirling their Dick Dastardly moustaches and practicing their best evil-doer laugh (probably). These are the villains we can’t wait to see get their comeuppance.

‘Grace of Monaco’ U.S. March release canceled as biopic starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly to open 2014 Cannes Film Festival (photo: Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly in ‘Grace of Monaco’) Directed by Olivier Dahan, and starring Nicole Kidman as Oscar-winning Hollywood actress-turned-European princess Grace Kelly, Grace of Monaco was to have been a (possibly) strong Oscar 2014 contender — at least in the Best Actress category. After all, Dahan had guided 2007 Best Actress Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose; Nicole Kidman is a respected actress with one Academy Award win (for Stephen Daldry’s The Hours) and two nominations (Moulin Rouge!, Rabbit Hole); and, last but certainly not least, Grace of Monaco was to have been released in North America by the Oscar-savvy The Weinstein Company. However, Harvey Weinstein was reportedly unhappy with Olivier Dahan’s final cut, and demanded that Grace of Monaco be reedited.

Paul Potts movie ‘One Chance’ wins 2013 Starz Denver Film Festival Audience Award (photo: James Corden as ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ hit Paul Potts looking at Brad Pitt photo in ‘One Chance’) Among the winners at the 2013 Starz Denver Film Festival (Sdff), which ran November 6-17, was David Frankel’s One Chance, the story of Paul Potts, a timid shop assistant and amateur opera singer who eventually topped "Britain’s Got Talent." James Corden plays Potts, while Julie Walters and Colm Meaney are his parents. Director Frankel’s best-known movies are The Devil Wears Prada (2006), which earned Meryl Streep a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for playing Anne Hathaway’s style-conscious boss and nemesis, and the sentimental blockbuster Marley & Me (2008), toplining Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. A 2012 reunion with Meryl Streep in Hope Springs, also featuring Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell, did only moderate business. This year’s Starz Denver...

The 49th Annual Chicago International Film Festival comes to a close tonight, but not without some special discoveries to be seen. I was lucky enough to catch the latest film from the Coen Brothers, Inside Llewyn Davis, and was glad I took a chance on Wolfskinder, a worthy nominee in the “New Directors Competition.” After hearing Jeff Bayer and Eric D. Snider joke about Dracula 3D at Cannes 2012, I finally got to witness its craptitude with my own eyes. Reviews for the films are below.
Working the festival beat, I also partook in some interviews ready in the near future, including chats with David Frankel (director of The Devil Wears Prada and now the Paul Potts biopic One Chance), and the Polsky Brothers for The Motel Life, starring Stephen Dorff and Emile Hirsch. If all goes right tomorrow, I will also have an interview with Oscar Isaac for Inside Llewyn Davis.

As Loach puts out an appeal for rare equipment to complete his last feature, we've the lowdown on all the headlines plus advice on what to see at the cinema this weekend
In cinemas today
Our top tip for those in the UK today is undoubtedly Clio Barnard's Bradford-set neo-realist weepie The Selfish Giant, which Peter has given five stars. Don't fancy that? Perhaps ancient terror with the reissued Nosferatu? Or maybe the new(ish) film from director Julie Delpy, Skylab, which Peter has given four stars; same mark as for eco doco Project Wild Thing, and which Chris Michael gives hairy toon Wolf Children as well as music doco Muscle Shoals.
Peter is less keen on James Corden as Paul Potts in One Chance, but Ender's Game comes in for some praise, ditto South Korean drama The Taste of Money. Steve Rose gives a good three stars to Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa.

She’s made quite a name for herself thanks to plenty of pop songs and passion, and Taylor Swift is really excited about the forthcoming film “One Chance.”
The “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” songstress performs her new track “Sweeter Than Fiction” from the movie’s soundtrack and gushes about her inspiration for the tune.
Taylor explained that she was struck by “the struggles and triumphs of someone who never stopped chasing what he was after.”
“One Chance” is about the real-life story of Paul Potts, who became famous after his appearance on “Britain’s Got Talent.”

Making a name for himself as one of Britain’s best loved comic performers, James Corden has turned his head to drama, playing Paul Potts in the emotional biopic One Chance.
Following a hearty discussion about football preceding this interview (which we’ve cut out, don’t worry), Corden discusses how he embodied the role of Potts, as well as discussing his own rise to fame – echoing that of the man who won the first ever Britain’s Got Talent. He also talks about his upcoming project Into the Woods with Johnny Depp, and tells us whether or not they use his real singing voice in the film…

Pair Taylor Swift with fun.’s Jack Antonoff and the result is just as one would expect: an upbeat pop track with swelling choruses and a peppy message. So it is with “Sweeter Than Fiction,” the tune the pair wrote for “One Chance,” the British film about “Britain’s Got Talent” winner Paul Potts’ rags-to-riches story after he went from store clerk to chart-topping singer. The song, which will run over the end credits, is a sweet tale about loving someone before they were famous and how glorious the success is after all the rejection that came before it. Of course, in the...

She always has something awesome up her sleeve, and Taylor Swift's latest musical potion “Sweeter Than Fiction” has just hit the internet.
Taken from the forthcoming flick “One Chance” about Paul Potts’ career-making appearance on “Britain’s Got Talent,” the song definitely features a 1980s new wave vibe.
Swift sings, “I’ve seen you fall, I’ve seen you crawl on your knees, eh eh… I’ve seen you lost in a crowd, seen your colors fade… There you’ll stand ten feet tall, and I will say, ‘I knew it all along.’”
“Sweeter Than Fiction” will play during the closing credits of “One Chance” and is poised to be yet another hit for Taylor!

There's a new song from Taylor Swift out there, but it's not a single. From upcoming British film One Chance, the movie's about "an opera-singing sensation after he wins Britain’s Got Talent in 2007." Taylor's song, however, has nothing to do with the movie's inspiration Paul Potts — it's more John Hughes than Pavarotti — with fun. guitarist and Lena Dunham beau Jack Antonoff co-writing. The Brat Pack all just got goosebumps.

Given the vast amount of manufactured, Simon Cowell creations that now exist in the world, it was inevitable that one of these inspirational tales would be eventually be brought to the big screen, and it seemed somewhat apt for the very first to be that of Paul Potts – the winner of the first Britain’s Got Talent. One Chance, directed by David Frankel is a film that feels as commercially manufactured as the shows of which it’s depicting, yet that is by no means a bad thing – because more often than not, that guarantees to be a sure-fire hit.

Captain Phillips (12A)
(Paul Greengrass, 2013, Us) Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Michael Chernus. 134 mins
No room for Depp-like jollity aboard this pirate tale. Instead, Greengrass brings his usual reportage-style urgency to a true-life Indian Ocean hijack situation. It's tense, credible and intelligent, even if pitting four Somali fishermen against Hanks, a big ship and formidable back-up is a pretty unfair contest – that very imbalance is part of the point.
Enough Said (12A)

Gandolfini's final performance elevates a polished but trifling comedy, centring on a blossoming romance poisoned by an ex-wife.
