There are many ingredients to the success of 1977's "Star Wars," from its spectacular cast of mostly unknowns to the groundbreaking special effects that revolutionized the industry and its lived-in universe rich in details and history. But another vital ingredient that ensured "Star Wars" would remain in audiences' minds forever was its use of iconography. Every visual aspect of the movie is memorable and striking, from the look of the human characters and alien creatures to the spaceships and buildings.
Take the stormtroopers, the faceless mob of soldiers with terrible aim and a tendency to bonk their heads on the ceiling. Though mere blaster fodder in the franchise, the stormtroopers are as much a part of "Star Wars" as the lightsaber or the Millennium Falcon. Even after 40 years, the franchise continues to find new uses for the stormtroopers, like finally showing how they became the main army of the Empire in "The Bad Batch.

In a 2000 Star Wars Insider interview with "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" director Irvin Kershner, he admits that he was initially reluctant to take on the project: "'Star Wars' was one of the greatest successes we ever had in film, and I felt to follow it would only be to make a film not as good." Even the studio did not want him to get involved with the sequel, feeling that Kershner was "too old, because it's a young person's film." He also knew next to nothing about special effects.
But as much of a success as "Star Wars" became, it was not initially received that way. In the same interview, Kershner recalls viewing a trailer at Francis Ford Coppola's New Year's Eve party: "We were all baffled, to tell you the truth. We did not believe that he was going to get away with this. We all had...

Along with Harrison Ford’s iconic character’s exploits cracking whips, globetrotting, wearing a fedora and leather jacket regardless of climate, and — we cannot emphasize this enough — punching Nazis, what turned audiences into voracious fan of Indiana Jones is how the treasure hunter would pursue artifacts that belong in a museum (preferably a museum in the area whence the artifact originated).
What we love about Indiana Jones is how the franchise tapped into real-world archaeological discoveries and mysterious artifacts. That tradition absolutely continues with Ford’s fifth and final outing as the adventurer in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Here are a few aspects of Indy’s pursuits of fortune and glory that are part fact and part fiction.

Before Harrison Ford dusts off his fedora and rethreads his trusty bullwhip for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, we’re looking back at the film that launched one of the most iconic action adventure franchises in Hollywood history, Raiders of the Lost Ark. The brainchild of George Lucas and his close friend, Steven Spielberg. Their collective vision for Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones Jr. evolved from their love of old adventure serials. They saw Indy as an American equivalent of James Bond, an explorer who uncovers artifacts and punches Nazis instead of fighting for his queen and country and sleeping with the enemy.

In 1977, a movie you might have heard of called Star Wars came out and thoroughly shifted the kind of movies Hollywood considered blockbusters. Until then, the idea of an epic sci-fi fantasy grossing hundreds of millions of dollars was considered laughable, and the genre was regarded as B-movie material at best. Star Wars changed that thinking, and suddenly studios were bending over backwards flooding theaters with their own sci-fi epics. This led to Star Trek getting a crack at the big screen, with the original crew headlining a movie that, at the time, was one of the most expensive movies ever made. In this episode of Revisited, we dig into Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Flashback to 1978. Star Wars was still making a mint, and Universal took the pilot episode for a Star Wars-knock-off series they developed, Battlestar Galactica, and released it in theaters. It made a stunning $41.8 million internationally,...

The "Buck Rogers" estate, overseen by the Nowlan Family Trust, have sent a cease-and-desist letter to Legendary Entertainment about the studio developing a TV reboot of "Buck Rogers", for producers Don Murphy ("Transformers") and Susan Montford at Angry Films:
"...according to the notice the 'Buck Rogers Interests' have signed an agreement with Skydance Productions LLC to produce 'Buck Rogers' content, adapting the 1928 novella 'Armageddon 2419 A.D.', written by Philip Francis Nowlan and published in the science fiction pulp magazine 'Amazing Stories'.
"'Anthony Rogers', a 'World War I' veteran is investigating strange phenomena in an abandoned Pennsylvania coal mine for his company, the 'American Radioactive Gas Corporation', when he is trapped by a cave-in.
"Exposed to radioactive gas, Rogers falls into suspended animation and reawakens 492 years later in the 25th century.

When Corey Taylor was five years old, Buck Rogers changed his life. If the Slipknot frontman hadn’t seen the 1979 film,Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, he never would have seen the trailer for John Carpenter’s genre-defining slasher flick, Halloween.
Taylor, now 48, still has total recall of the moment he first saw masked killer Michael Myers: “I can’t tell you one thing about the Buck Rogers movie, but I can remember everything about that trailer,” he says over Zoom, looking relaxed in a surprisingly brightly lit kitchen.

"Andor" is unlike anything we've seen from "Star Wars" so far, a grounded show with gravitas, emotional impact, thematic resonance, and absolutely gorgeously-shot moments. This is a show where evil is not over-the-top, but mundane, cold, and detached; where heroism isn't just killing a bunch of people or exploding space stations, but also just refusing to look the other way when evil is happening.
Set between the prequels and the original trilogy, "Andor" has the opportunity to explore and expand things we haven't seen the franchise do in live-action before, going deeper into the way people join a rebellion, explaining rebel technology, and more. The newest episode of the show also explores how politics play into a brewing civil war, all while bringing back a location that has been sorely missed in "Star Wars," the Galactic Senate.

It's one of the coolest fights in movie history. In Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," archeologist-adventurer Dr. Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) has escaped from the Egyptian Well of Souls, linked up with partner Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), and plans to escape from the German Nazi forces (who are there in pursuit of a biblical artifact) by stealing a plane. All goes well until a German mechanic hassles a clearly out-of-place Indy, and a quick scuffle takes place. Despite being at a disadvantage, he disarms his opponent and scurries up the plane to take control. Then, a towering behemoth of muscle in the form of wrestler Pat Loach emerges from a normal-sized hut like Gandalf out of a Hobbit-hole, grinning at the prospect of a bare-knuckle fight.

There’s no getting around it — Mario Bava’s one space opera is now confirmed as a classic. Barry Sullivan and Norma Bengell must oppose invisible aliens that possess the corpses of their fellow space men. Bava’s ‘gothic’ Haunted Planet recipe just adds more weird colored lights and swirling fog to his supernatural Gothic formula. The designs are excellent and the results unique, from the odd spacecraft to the kinky costumes. The show is also genuinely influential, as should be well known to every fan of more modern sci-fi / horror films. The new HD remaster is an improvement, too!

While Taika Waititi is currently very busy promoting two big Disney releases out in the next few weeks — Lightyear and Thor: Love and Thunder — the writer-director is also preparing to jump to a third major property for the House of Mouse: Star Wars. According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Waititi’s mystery movie could take the “late 2023” release date previously reserved for Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, which has been delayed due to alleged “creative differences” behind the scenes.
How likely it is that Waititi will be able to deliver a blockbuster Star Wars movie in less than 18 months remains to be seen, but even Kennedy has said that Lucasfilm hasn’t officially “locked anything in.” And just last week, Waititi confirmed that he was still working on the script, “coming up with ideas and storylining,” with co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns. This sounds more like a 2024 movie, if you ask us.

A new adaptation of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” based on the Alan Moore graphic novels, is in the works at 20th Century Studios. The project is in early development at the studio, and intended to land on Hulu.
The film will be written by Justin Haythe, who wrote Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller “Red Sparrow.” Kevin O’Neill drew the series which ended after eight graphic novels in 2020. The hope for the new adaptation is to film the original books.
The new incarnation will be extremely faithful to the original graphic novel, which involves famous public domain characters like Allan Quatermain, Mina Harker from Dracula, The Invisible Man, Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fu Manchu, Captain Nemo and Professor Cavor teaming up to thwart a deadly attack on London from the air in Victorian times.

Science fiction television always seems to get second chances more than any other genre on the small screen. Shows like “Star Trek” have spawned multiple incarnations after the original series was canceled back in the 1960s, “Doctor Who” had its own resurrection too, George Clooney is working with Legendary on a new “Buck Rogers” series, Peacock is moving forward with the third incarnation of “Battlestar Galactica,” Netflix is wrapping up on “Lost In Space.” Even the British cult series “Red Dwarf” keeps chugging along.

Legendary Pictures maintains it is the rightful owners of the “Buck Rogers” rights following the latest legal threat from the Nowlan Family Trust, who claims they own the rights.
Legendary was hit with a cease and desist letter on Tuesday over the planned reboot with George Clooney, which was announced last week.

Exclusive: A growing dust-up over classic outer space hero Buck Rogers isn’t a fight over rights, and it won’t be warming up to become one if Legendary Entertainment has anything to say about it.

Hollywood may be doubling up on Buck Rogers.

Word of this week’s new movie release, all about archeology, may have quickened the pulses of many action film fans. Perhaps visions of a daring, rugged adventurer escaping insidious death traps, battling vicious rivals and their burly henchmen, rescuing damsels in dire distress, and snatching up mystical riches swirled in their fevered brains. Or perhaps of heroes facing peril from an ancient evil, released from the tomb to cause havoc and horror may come to mind for many. Well, maybe the word that this is based on an actual event puts the brakes on those expectations of Indiana Jones and monstrous mummies. Turns out it’s tedious and filthy work with dirt in your boots and embedded under fingernails. Ah, but despite that, along with power politics, there’s still the thrill of discovery. That may be the biggest “find” in the new “docudrama The Dig.

In addition to "Star Wars" 'space opera' spin-offs, followed by a developing "Flash Gordon" reboot, Legendary Entertainment have scored the rights to "Buck Rogers", for producers Don Murphy ("Transformers") and Susan Montford at Angry Films:
"...the new film will adapt the 1928 novella 'Armageddon 2419 A.D.', written by Philip Francis Nowlan and published in the science fiction pulp magazine "Amazing Stories", following 'Anthony Rogers', a 'World War I' veteran who is investigating strange phenomena in an abandoned Pennsylvania coal mine for his company, the 'American Radioactive Gas Corporation', when he is trapped by a cave-in.
"Exposed to radioactive gas, Rogers falls into suspended animation and reawakens 492 years later in the 25th century.
"Thanks to spies and infiltrators, what used to be America, is now ruled by the Chinese 'Han' who invaded the US hundreds of years earlier using fleets of airships armed with disintegration rays.

According to reports, a popular 'genre' director is still interested in developing a fresh update of "Flash Gordon", based on the 1934 newspaper comic strip hero by Alex Raymond, that inspired the creation of "Star Wars" by George Lucas.
Director Matthew Vaughn ("Kingsman: The Secret Service") has been approached by Fox to kick-off the new film series.
"Flash Gordon" debuted January 7, 1934, inspired by the 1932 CBS Radio, space adventures of "Buck Rogers".
"...'Flash Gordon', a polo player and Yale University graduate, with his companion 'Dale Arden' and 'Dr. Hans Zarkov' start their journey into space as Earth is bombarded by fiery meteors, with Zarkov inventing a rocket ship to locate their place of origin.
"Half mad, Zarkov kidnaps Flash and Dale and the three travel to the planet 'Mongo', where they discover the meteors are weapons devised by 'Ming the Merciless', the planet's evil ruler.

As of right now the Buck Rogers excitement and hype is just that, excitement and hype since there have been no plans made as of yet when it comes to casting or who’s going to direct this movie and possible franchise that could come from it. The fever pitch that has already been seen to be happening since people are already talking about a franchise before a movie has even been launched which means that expectations that this property could be turned into something that might gain a lot of attention but somehow miss the mark entirely when it finally

“It was possibly the most frustrating thing I’ve ever been through in my career,” Paul Feig says. “To make something I’m so proud of that was exactly what I wanted it to be that had this amazing cast, and the writing was so good. And then to be so happy with the final product and then nobody sees it.”
Feig isn’t talking about the bizarre internet backlash that greeted the 2016 version of Ghostbusters, but instead, lamenting how a year prior, in 2015, his series Other Space — which originally debuted on the now-defunct Yahoo Stream platform — was shelved with very little fanfare or announcement. If you haven’t heard of Other Space, an 8-episode comedy series, you’re forgiven. At a glance, it feels like a show you know you would instantly love; the aesthetics of ‘70s space opera, but with the jaunty, quirky humor of Community.

The comic strip featuring the very first appearance of Flash Gordon, the 1930s sci-fi hero that launched movie and radio serials and even influenced the creation of Star Wars, sold for almost half a million dollars at an auction Tuesday.
The pencil-and-ink art by Alex Raymond, the creator of the strip, sold for a muscular $480,000, a record for comic strip art. Certainly adding to the appeal of the art was its historical significance.

Former Buck Rogers in the 25th Century star Gil Gerard has come aboard a sci-fi project that wants to recapture the spirit of the late 1970s-early 1980s NBC series.
The actor will be an executive producer and series regular on 2491, a drama from creator Salvatore Verini (Fyi's Country Daze). Verini grew up as a fan of the Gerard-led show and says the new project was influenced by it — down to the title, which refers to the year 20th-century astronaut Buck Rogers returned to a future Earth on the series.

Exclusive: As UK studios and cinemas fill up with mega-budget U.S. superhero movies, here’s a rare David and Goliath story from the other end of the spectrum. Micro-budget UK sci-fi film Invasion Planet Earth, a passion project 20 years in the making, has secured UK distribution.
Lightbulb Film Distribution and Munro Film Services have teamed up to release the debut feature, which follows a couple’s struggle to survive as the UK comes under attack from an alien mothership.
Brit editor Simon Cox, now in his 50s, began working on the script in the ’90s and has been piecing it together for over a decade. His initial plan was to make “the biggest British indie sci-fi movie ever” but over the years a different reality set in. Even then, it has taken most of his adult life to pull it off.
The project, which was previously called Kaleidoscope Man,...

When Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” opened in April 1968, few in the audience understood it, though most would never admit it. All they knew was they had just seen something like they had never seen before.
The Cannes Film Festival will celebrate the 50th anniversary of “2001: A Space Odyssey” with the world premiere of an unrestored 70mm print, introduced by Christopher Nolan, May 12.
Filmmaker James Cameron was no different. At age 14, he took the film in at the Castle Theatre in Toronto — where, as in many cities, it played continuously for two years. “The word used to describe it was ‘mindblowing,’” he recalls. “It was like no cinematic journey like I’d ever seen before.”

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: What is your favorite robot of all time on TV?
Marisa Roffman (@marisaroffman), Give Me My Remote
Obviously, the correct answer is robo-house Pierce Brosnan in the 2001 “Treehouse of Horror” episode of “The Simpsons.” (Rip its British charm unit.) But on a more serious note, I’m having a tough time picking between the excellent team over at “Westworld” (the more obvious choice) and the A.I. that I still miss: Drn (Michael Ealy) from “Almost Human.” On one hand, Team “Westworld” gets to destroy things, cause mayhem, and generally take over the world. On the other, Drn got to solve futuristic crimes and banter with Karl Urban’s John Kennex. I love them all — I welcome our future robot overlords.

Washington — At&T CEO Randall Stephenson defended his company’s $85 billion plan to merge with Time Warner as he took the stand in one of the most anticipated moments of the antitrust trial.
Stephenson, often speaking directly to the judge as he gave his testimony, emphasized that At&T wanted “wide broad distribution” for Time Warner content, implicitly pushing back against the government’s claim that the combined company would use “must have” channels like TBS, TNT, and CNN as a “weapon” to extract higher fees from rivals.
“A $160 billion company doesn’t buy a $30 billion company, hoping the $30 billion company can make its value greater,” Stephenson said, adding that the situation was the opposite. “It’s a matter of math.”
At&T-Time Warner’s lead counsel Daniel Petrocelli introduced notes that Stephenson had taken in the summer of 2016, just after he and Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes first talked about a combination,...
