Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh has dedicated more than four decades to shaping his legacy in Hollywood as a director, cinematographer and producer. But instead of splurging on yachts or a home in the South of France, he is investing in the future of independent filmmaking by mentoring directors like Joe and Anthony Russo, Christopher Nolan and most recently Eddie Alcazar. He and Alcazar’s second collaboration (after 2018’s Perfect) is Divinity, which hits theaters nationwide Friday after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film, set in an otherworldly human existence on a barren planet, follows Sterling Pierce (Scott Bakula), a scientist who has dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum known as “Divinity.” Jaxxon Pierce (Stephen Dorff), his son, now controls and manufactures his father’s once-benevolent dream. Society has been entirely perverted by the supremacy of the drug, whose...

Eccentric Silicon Valley billionaires who pour their fortunes into sci-fi-tinged humanitarian causes are often preoccupied by one of two problems: curing death, or solving the planet’s looming underpopulation crisis. For every corporate titan who claims to have shaved years off his body’s natural aging process by adapting an all-fungi diet, there’s another one cooking up a scheme to quintuple humanity’s population by spreading us across multiple planets.
In the two-dimensional comic book logic that these dreamers often live by, the two goals seem perfectly complementary. Artificially-induced immortality and rapid population growth are both hedges against the demise of humanity. They’re both ambitious declarations that the miracle of human consciousness will continue to live on no matter what indifference the universe decides to throw at us.
Eddie Alcazar’s “Divinity” offers an alternative point of view. Pulling liberally from 1950s B-movies, film noir, porn, stop motion,...

The future looks more purgatorial than paradisiacal in “Divinity,” Eddie Alcazar’s second feature as writer-director. Like the first, 2018’s “Perfect,” this is a cryptic sci-fi body horror allegory where undeniably arresting aesthetics are nonetheless more a symptom of shallow lookism-based values than the intended critique. Stephen Dorff plays a wealthy recluse peddling the titular mystery serum, which promises eternal youth — though, naturally, there may be drawbacks. This invention attracts attention not just from consumers, but from apparent space aliens who arrive to halt its disturbance of the natural order.
Those looking for midnight-movie eccentricity will find much to enjoy in the black-and-white film’s mix of the trippy, queasy and erotic. But as before, the effortfully quirky elements don’t really add up to a cogent whole, resulting in something a mite too reflective of its creator’s background in commercials and game design — a rarefied, stimulating surface without depth.

Themes of immortality, fertility, over-consumption and capitalist exploitation inform this Sundance-selected feature, which tries hard to capture the classic look of Fifties science fiction but ends up looking more like a perfume advert. It’s one of those self-consciously artsy endeavours whose success is built on real talent but which uses its glamour to try to disguise a thin plot and poorly substantiated propositions.
The pre-credits sequence, which uses a choppily-edited montage to tell the story of scientist Sterling Pierce (Scott Bakula) and his desperate search for an anagathic which will keep the mind as well as the body young, is by far the best part of the film. In the scenes which follow we focus on Pierce’s son Jaxxon (Stephen Dorff), who has finally brought the project to fruition, making a fortune in the process, but is still trying to refine it, introducing different flavours and different sensual experiences.

Unless Taylor Swift’s concert film truly surprises, we imagine the trippiest film to arrive this year will be landing on the same release date of October 13. Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity premiered at Sundance Film Festival, backed by executive producer Steven Soderbergh, to claims of instant cult classic status and now Utopia and Sumerian have unveiled the trailer ahead of a release.
Starring Stephen Dorff, Moises Arias, Jason Genao, Karrueche Tran, Mike O’Hearn, Emily Willis, with Scott Bakula and Bella Throne, here’s the synopsis: “Set in an otherworldly human existence, scientist Sterling Pierce (Scott Bakula) dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum named “Divinity.” Jaxxon Pierce (Stephen Dorff), his son, now controls and manufactures his father’s once-benevolent dream. Society on this barren planet has been entirely perverted by the supremacy of the drug, whose true origins are shrouded in mystery.

There’s a certain type of dystopian sci-fi that turns up in Sundance every few years, a kind of ‘Epcot on acid’ that causes a big ripple then rapidly fades away. Divinity, screening in the Next section, fits the bill exactly, a quirky mad scientist movie that, for all its attempts to be arty, darkly satirical and out-there, ends up as a kind of lo-fi companion piece to Don’t Worry Darling in its not-so-subtle skewering of American consumerism. Shot in grainy black and white, its chief draw is Stephen Dorff as you’ve never seen him before, and will likely never want to see him again.

Out of all the programming categories at Sundance, it’s Next that proves to be the most divisive. Saved for “pure, bold works distinguished by an innovative, forward-thinking approach to storytelling,” it’s essentially the home of arthouse cinema. So it should come as no surprise that Eddie Alcazar‘s weird-as-hell Divinity, which just had its world premiere at the festival, falls right into that category.
Set in an alternate universe (or a near future?), Divinity sees scientist Sterling Pierce dedicate his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum named Divinity. Years later, his son Jaxxon Pierce now controls and manufactures the drug, resulting in a hedonistic planet that has been left 97 infertile, but immortal. The sci-fi thriller Divinity, written and directed by Eddie Alcazar (Perfect) and produced by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven), had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend – and an ambulance was called to the theatre when one audience member had an unspecified medical incident. The movie wasn’t interrupted and the individual who suffered the medical incident was treated and cleared, but here’s hoping other screenings of Divinity will go more smoothly. To help you decide whether or not you want to watch Divinity at some point down the line, we have the film’s trailer embedded above.
There are a few different synopses available for Divinity. Here’s one: Set on a barren planet, the retro feature showcases the fight to uncover mysteries behind an immortality-granting drug that has wreaked havoc on society.
Here’s another: Centers on two mysterious brothers, who abduct a mogul during his quest for immortality.

There was plenty of buzz heading into Saturday night’s world premiere of Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre, and by the time the screening ended, there were flashing red lights on the scene as well.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that a “medical incident” occurred during the official Sundance Film Festival screening, but despite earlier reports, it was not as serious as it initially seemed. “The individual was treated and cleared,” a rep for the film tells THR. “No one went into labor. And the film was not stopped.”
Another source confirmed it was a “medical incident” but added that the individual was able to walk out and be treated. They are said to be in stable condition.
Deadline first reported news of the medical emergency, indicating that it was a woman who went into labor during the screening. That turned out not to be true...
