My to-be-read pile is shamefully big, but that never stops me from adding more. I cherish getting lost in a good book, but a novel is more of a commitment than chipping away at movies on my to-watch list. The conspicuously titled 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re Murdered may make that stack of books to read even more intimidating, but it also helps narrow down which tales of terror are worthy of being moved to the top.
Following a foreword by Bird Box author Josh Malerman, writer Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann explains why you should trust her choices implicitly. As the owner of the horror fiction subscription service Night Worms and the editor-in-chief of publisher Dark Hart Books, she’s an unassailable authority on horror literature — even if she’s a self-proclaimed scaredy cat who rarely watches genre movies.

It only takes a small, insignificant moment to completely change the course of a life. It’s that premise from which The Blacktongue Thief starts. Kinch Na Shannack, working thief, is spared when a banditry gig goes south. The Spanth warrior who spares him, Galva, is on a quest—and the Taker’s Guild, for which Kinch works, assigns him to accompany her, gain her trust, and wait for further instruction. As he travels with Galva, and, soon after, a witch companion Norrigal, he begins to question just where his allegiance lies, and what he owes his newfound friends—and the world.
From the first pages of The Blacktongue Thief, this Den of Geek reviewer was hooked, in no small part because the narrative voice is quite simply a delight. Kinch welcomes readers straight into a world where humanity was nearly destroyed by goblins, and...

Netflix’s latest French indie film, Oxygen, is the first great sci-fi thriller to come out of the pandemic lockdown.
“Netflix’s latest sci-fi movie was first announced in 2017 with Anne Hathaway in the starring role. In 2020, Noomi Rapace replaced Hathaway, but that version fell apart, too. Finally, French movie star Mélanie Laurent replaced Rapace, transforming Oxygen into the French indie now streaming on Netflix.”
Read more at Inverse.
As the world opens up this year, here are some tips on how to overcome Covid-19 anxiety and have fun outside again.
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated its Covid-19 guidelines, saying it’s safe for fully vaccinated people to socialize indoors in small groups without masks. The three Covid-19 vaccines approved by the Fda offer excellent protection against the virus, but they won’t replenish any social skills you’ve lost over the past year.”

“You know it’s ok to be scared, right?”
Shudder has released another trailer for Greg Nicotero’s upcoming Creepshow series, which is based on the classic horror anthology film of Stephen King and George Romeo.
I’m super excited about this series revival, and the stories that are going to be told sound like some good old-fashioned creepy fun. You can tell that the creative team had a great time making this series and telling these stories.
This new trailer offers a lot of great new footage teasing the wonderfully terrorizing madness that awaits.
We have some information on all twelve of the stories that will be told during the first season and I’ve listed them again below in case you missed them or want to read through them again.

This Creepshow anthology series is going to offer some fun and horrific entertainment! I had the opportunity to watch the first episode of the series, which I really enjoyed, and I’m looking forward to watching the rest of them. You can tell that Greg Nicotero is having a blast making this series, which is a revival of the 1980s horror anthology films from George Romero and Stephen King.
As a big fan of those films, I enjoy how the series emulates those in its style, and you’ve gotta love the practical effects that were utilized to bring these 12 stories to life for our viewing entertainment.
We’ve got a new blood and gore filled trailer for the series for you to watch that teases the crazy terror-filled mayhem that awaits us! Enjoy!

Shudder's Creepshow reboot is bringing the '80s horror anthology back to life and the set has the bloodstains to prove it.
On the calendar behind Greg Nicotero’s desk, every day, from Jan. 7, 2019 through to today, March 28, is marked with a red “X.” The lines are big and emphatic, as though the writer put every last bit of his energy into striking them.
“It seems like yesterday was January 7th and now it's the end of March,” Nicotero says, sinking into a chair in front of the calendar. “There's been no time to even pick anything up.”
Production happens in a near constant state on the Creepshow set and the chaos on the cavernous Atlanta soundstage reflects it. Outside of Nicotero’s office, hallways are littered with rubber monsters and gory props. Two lifeless Nazi soldier dolls greet the production staff arriving on set, one bald and scarred,...

One of the many reasons George A. Romero's Creepshow continues to thrill and chill horror fans more than 35 years after its initial release is thanks to the makeup effects by Tom Savini (who also played one of the movie's garbagemen in the memorable wraparound segment). It's fitting, then, that Savini has been announced as the director of one of the episodes of Shudder's new Creepshow series, based on a story by Joe Hill, who played Billy in the film's wraparound segment.
Savini will direct an episode adaptation of Joe Hill's "By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain," working from a screenplay by Jason Ciaramella.
Along with Savini's return to the Creepshow franchise, Shudder also announced a casting update for the series, revealing that David Arquette, Tricia Helfer, and Dana Gould have joined the cast. Read the official press release below for more information, and stay tuned to Daily Dead...

“There wouldn’t be a Creepshow without Tom Savini,” said showrunner Greg Nicotero. “His mark on the horror industry and unflinching approach to Special Effects Make-up did more for the genre than anything since the invention of fake blood. Tom has always been a visionary and his love of cinema and making movies is felt in every frame of his episode. I’m honored to have my friend as a big part of the team.

Horror movie icon Tom Savini recently revealed that he directed an episode of Greg Nicotero’s Creepshow horror anthology series.
During a panel at Monsterpalooza, which I attended last weekend, Savini revealed that he will direct one of the twelve episodes of Shudder’s upcoming series. The episode he helmed is based on Joe Hill’s short story, “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain”, which centers around two friends who unexpectedly find a dead plesiosaur on a beach. He said:
“I just directed an episode of the Creepshow television series. There’s 12 [stories] altogether – each show will have two episodes in it. Mine’s a combination of Stand By Me, The Fog, and Jurassic Park. It’s really something.”
I love that he likens the story to Stand By Me, The Fog, and Jurassic Park. That makes this sound like it’ll be a great episode! Here’s a full...

Christopher Buehlman's The Lesser Dead, a ferocious and funny look at vampires living in 1978 New York City, is told by Joey Peacock—a perpetually fourteen-year-old vampire who lives underground in the city's tunnels. It arrives October 7th from Ace Hardcover.
While riding the subways one night, Joey (a very questionable narrator) discovers that his group might not be the city’s apex predators when he witnesses a small group of children hypnotize a businessman and lead him away into the subway tunnel.
What follows is a gruesome game of cat and mouse between New York’s vampire residents and an ancient evil.
Check out the novel's cover art and official synopsis below.
Synopsis:
"The secret is, vampires are real and I am one.
The secret is, I’m stealing from you what is most truly yours and I’m not sorry... "

Anyway, congratulations to all of the nominees, and good luck to them. I leave the annual exercise of determining which two entries in each category were voted on by the convention membership and which were picked by the judges to fandom assembled.
