Warning: The following contains mild spoilers for the Ghostbusters franchise.
Yes, Ghostbusters is a horror movie – gateway horror to be exact. Setting aside the fact that the title literally contains the word “ghost,” a foundational element of the scariest genre, the franchise follows a group of paranormal researchers who battle entities attacking from beyond the grave. After countless rewatches, the classic films and newer sequels may not scare us much anymore, but how many times have we as genre fans asserted that a film does not have to be “scary” to be considered horror?
Genre classification is nebulous and any film that centers on ghosts has a place in the sprawling house of horror. Yes, it’s true that most viewers over the age of thirteen will find more to laugh about than scream while watching a Ghostbusters film, but each entry contains a handful of terrifying moments. "Ghostbusters" famously went through many iterations behind the scenes before it became a blockbuster hit in 1984. John Candy could have played Louis Tully, John Belushi was originally envisioned as Peter Venkman, and Eddie Murphy would have joined the team as Winston Zeddemore. But as we all know, Rick Moranis, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson stepped into those roles and cemented themselves in Hollywood history. However, there's another intriguing piece of casting you might not have heard about, and it involves the late, great Paul Reubens.
If you've seen "Ghostbusters," you know that the primary villain turns out to be Gozer the Gozerian, a shapeshifting, inter-dimensional, apocalyptic entity, who has been worshiped as a Sumerian god. Though Gozer can appear however it wants, they take the form of an intimidating woman in an ethereal body suit with terrifying red eyes and a flattop haircut. In the movie, Gozer is played by Yugoslav model Slavitza Jovan,...

The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife (watch it Here), which is scheduled to reach theatres on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, has been filming for a while now – and while cameras are rolling on that project, Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II star Sigourney Weaver, who had a quick cameo in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, is doing the press rounds for the film Master Gardener. (You can see our own Weaver / Master Gardener interview at This Link.) While talking to the folks at Collider about the film, Weaver revealed that she hasn’t been asked to come back for the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel.
When asked if she’s returning to the world of Ghostbusters, Weaver said, “No, I mean, I wasn’t asked to be in this Ghostbusters, and I think, you know, a little of us goes a long way.”
Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace are back for the sequel, reprising the roles of Trevor and Phoebe.

Filming is now underway on the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, which will bring legacy actor Ernie Hudson back as Winston Zeddemore. One character from the original films who will not be appearing in the next sequel? Dana Barrett, played by Sigourney Weaver.
Weaver tells Collider, “I wasn’t asked to be in this Ghostbusters.”
“And I think, you know, a little of us goes a long way,” Weaver adds.
Sigourney Weaver’s role in the Ghostbusters franchise has become increasingly limited with these two most recent movies, first appearing as a new character in a post-credits scene for Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. She more recently reprised the role of Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a cameo that was also relegated to a post-credits scene.

The Pitch: It didn't do well at the box office. Some people call it a bad sequel. I have never understood this. It's not that I don't get the criticisms or that people have different opinions. It makes total sense that viewers are attached to what they saw the first time -- the discovery of ghosts, a large and angry marshmallow, and the very funny interactions of several misfits and weirdos who try to hunt them. All of that said, there is a place in my heart for "Ghostbusters II," and it's higher up than the original.

Nostalgia is a tricky thing, especially these days. What used to be a slice of escapism has since become the blueprint for Hollywood studios, who have seemingly molded intellectual property into a skeleton key to get projects off the ground. Indie filmmakers graduate into blockbuster reboots, veteran filmmakers stretch their limbs with unnecessary sequels, and listicles are made about all the Easter eggs and trivia and yadda, yadda, yadda. There are exceptions, sure, but this is the business today, and our rose-tinted lenses are feeling the wear and tear.
Maybe. Hopefully. Probably not.
Ghostbusters, to stay on theme here (there is a point to all of this), is no exception to this riff raff. Last year, Jason Reitman finally delivered the second sequel die-hard fans have been waiting for since the days of Chris Farley rumors. It was fine. If you’re a fan of “Ghostbusters” movies, then you know that there are four of them in total. But what’s the correct order to watch them? Some say you should watch them in the order they were released, but others argue that chronological order is the way to go. So which is it?

According to Jason Reitman, he never wanted to make a Ghostbusters movie. But while most folks likely don’t stress over such things, most folks are also not the son of Ivan Reitman, director of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. And so the conversation of whether he’d ever make a Ghostbusters movie came up at one time or another throughout Jason’s professional life. He heard the question after he found early success in films like Thank You for Smoking (2005), Juno (2007), and Up in the Air (2009), and he heard it again in recent years. The dream of ever getting a Ghostbusters 3 faded long ago. There were false starts and rumors throughout the 1990s—and the 2000s too—that a sequel was this close to materializing. And yet, by the time Harold Ramis tragically passed in 2014, the likelihood of ever seeing the four original Ghostbusters standing side by side seemed impossible.
Which is one of the reasons Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife is such a surprise. Very much the closure longtime fans of the first two movies craved, as well as a possible backdoor opening to a larger Ghostbusters cinematic universe, the film comes from a talented filmmaker determined to honor his father’s most beloved work. It also seeks to serve that movie’s most ardent fans.
Hence Ghostbusters: Afterlife being stuffed up the proton pack with homages, easter eggs, references, and various other assorted nods to the original flicks.

The last moments of Ghostbusters: Afterlife feel as much like a new beginning as a final farewell. The closing scenes of Jason Reitman’s love letter to his father’s work bring the curtain down with a sense of finality on multiple elements. This is definitely the last we’ll see of Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler, who is brought back by digital magic as a kind-hearted ghost. One also gets the suspicion that Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman is making his goodbyes too with the respectful nod to Spengler and a revealed happily ever after with Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett.
However, just as the film closes the book on these aspects from the 1984 picture, it also seems to be opening the door for many others: young Phoebe Spengler (Mckenna Grace) is only just beginning to claim her ghostbusting birthright by strapping on the proton pack.

Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife is very much a film of two minds: it is a love letter to the past and his father’s work, and it’s also an attempt to strike out and be its own thing. The movie both basks in the nostalgia we associate with “legacy sequels” while also attempting to create a new generation of heroes who look decidedly nothing like Stantz, Venkman, or Zeddemore—although Spengler’s spirit is pretty well captured by the pint-sized Mckenna Grace.
So perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that the film’s two post-credits scenes are of similarly divided interests. One is a sweet nod (and presumable sendoff) to Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman and a briefly returning Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett, and the other sets the table for an entire shared Ghostbusters universe.

When Sigourney Weaver appeared as Dana Barrett in "Ghostbusters," she was between two other landmark performances — in "Alien" and "Aliens." The former served as her breakout role while the latter earned her an Oscar nomination for best actress, a first for her in her career.
Having dabbled in sci-fi horror and also romantic dramas like "The Year of Living Dangerously," Weaver was looking to spice up her filmography with some work in a different genre. Sigourney Weaver and Joel Edgerton have both signed up to star Paul Schrader’s next film ‘Master Gardner.’
Edgerton will take on the role of Narvel Roth, the meticulous horticulturist of Gracewood Gardens, who is as devoted to tending the grounds of this beautiful and historic estate as he is to pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager Mrs. Haverhill who will be played by Weaver. When Mrs. Haverhill demands that Roth take on her wayward and troubled great-niece Maya as a new apprentice, chaos enters his spartan existence, unlocking dark secrets from a buried violent past that threaten them all.
Schrader will both write and direct the feature. Schrader commented in a statement “When the idea first started, it was one of my male protagonists, but then these two women intervened and it became something more complex and unique,”

“I tried to think of the most harmless thing. Something I loved from my childhood. Something that could never ever possibly destroy us: Mr. Stay Puft!”
Ghostbusters: Afterlife just revealed how it will make those words from Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz more prescient—and poetically meta—than ever. The line, from the 1984 original movie, was a contrite explanation for his impulsive decision to choose the now-iconic, pillowy “destroyer” form of ancient evil entity Gozer for its attack on the Big Apple. Now, the 32-years-awaited follow-up to the franchise’s original iteration is bringing back Mr. Stay Puft—miniaturized and multiplied. Thusly, speculation on Gozer’s prospective return is potent.

While the concept of new scripted shows may already feel like a bygone idea in this era of pandemic-frozen productions, Syfy is actually moving forward with one such offering in The Surrealtor. Moreover, the main cast of the series has been officially announced, with a headliner familiar to viewers of the channel in Wynonna Earp’s Tim Rozon.

Ghostbusters 3 (possibly officially titled Ghostbusters: Afterlife) is shaping up to be everything fans of the franchise could want. Jason Reitman is approaching the original two films with reverence but also striking out in a fresh direction, while the official synopsis explains that the story will centre on a family who moves back to a small town “where they learn more about who they are.”
This family will be a new group of characters, but we’ve known for a while that most of the original cast is returning, too. Dan Aykroyd will be playing Ray Stantz, Sigourney Weaver is back as Dana Barrett, Ernie Hudson’s reprising his role as Winston Zeddemore, Annie Potts is once again Janine Melnitz and – yes – Bill Murray will definitely be playing Peter Venkman.
That last one must have taken some serious negotiating. Murray has famously been reluctant to return to his biggest role ever,...

The announcement will be made shortly at the Ghostbusters Fan Fest, presented by Wizard World, on the Sony Pictures lot.
Sources tell Variety Rudd will play a teacher in the film.
Carrie Coon is also in talks for the not-so-secret project along with “Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard and “Gifted” star Mckenna Grace.
Jason Reitman, whose father Ivan Reitman directed the original “Ghostbusters,” will step into the director’s chair. He co-wrote the screenplay with Gil Kenan and plans to shoot the film later this summer. “Ghostbusters 2020” is expected to hit theaters in summer of next year.
“I’ve been wanting to work with Paul Rudd since my short film opened for ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ at Sundance. I’m thrilled he’ll be joining this new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe,” said Jason Reitman.

When Ghostbusters 3 arrives in theaters next summer, Sigourney Weaver will be along for the ride.
The actress confirmed she’ll join co-stars Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in the sequel, as she reprises her role as cellist Dana Barrett.
“It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!” Weaver told Parade magazine in a lengthy feature about her life and career.
Weaver introduced the role of Barrett, whose apartment was haunted by an evil spirit, in the original 1984 film. She had a feeling the movie would be a hit.
“I knew it would be big. The script was so funny and full of heart,” she said. “Ghostbusters changed my life.”
The Oscar-nominated actress wouldn’t give any secrets away about the new entry. But we do know it’s being helmed by Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman.

Jason Reitman seems intent to get the whole band back together for his upcoming Ghostbusters movie. Comedian Bill Murray and three-time Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver are both set to reprise their roles from the original in the new film, where they’ll be joined onscreen by Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, who also helped fight ghosts in the legendary 1984 comedy.
Murray will once again star as Peter Venkman, a parapsychologist who leads a group of similarly eccentric ghost hunters. Weaver, meanwhile, is returning as Dana Barrett, the musician who can’t seem to escape unwelcome attention from the paranormal. The success of the franchise helped launch both of these actors into very prestigious careers, so it’s nice to see them return to their roots all these years later.
Their involvement will also hopefully inspire the rest of the crew to reunite for one last hurrah. Harold Ramis unfortunately...

Being a Ghostbusters fan is often a frustrating experience. Since the release of the sequel back in 1989, there’s been a constant stream of rumors about a second follow-up to the classic 1984 original. Along the way, we’ve heard Dan Aykroyd excitedly hyping up the various versions of the project, the most notorious of which would have seen the Ghostbusters go to hell. Then there was the 2016 reboot, which was met with a colossal wave of online disdain, wasn’t very funny and ended up a box office failure. But let’s put all that behind us, because Jason Reitman (son of Ivan) has just announced Ghostbusters 3. For real this time.
According to Entertainment Weekly, it’ll continue the story begun in Ghostbusters and stick to the original timeline. As Reitman put it:
