In the upcoming fourth movie in the franchise, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, the plot is said to “pick up with Bridget in her early fifties, as she navigates the challenges of modern life while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood.” Along with Zellweger, returning players from the past films are set to include Hugh Grant, and Emma Thompson.
Variety has now reported that the new installment has added some notable names to the cast. Last year, Frasier Crane returned to TV screens in the "Frasier" revival series. While it struggled to capture the magic of the original series, "Frasier" 2023 certainly had some high points. The festive season finale was one of the better Christmas episodes, and the show handled the passing of Martin Crane actor John Mahoney beautifully. Then there were the guest stars, which included actress Peri Gilpin, who played Frasier's producer on the original sitcom, and Bebe Neuwirth, who played Lilith Sternin on both "Frasier" and "Cheers."
Lilith debuted in the 1986 "Cheers" episode "Second Time Around," becoming a series regular and eventually starting a relationship with Kelsey Grammer's Frasier before the pair got married. By the end of the series they had broken up, and when "Frasier" debuted in 1993 the titular doctor had moved to Seattle while Lilith stayed in Boston with her and her ex-husband's son, Freddy. To quote the great Taylor Swift, “August slipped away like a moment in time.” September has arrived, and with it, a countdown to certain films and shows leaving Netflix at the end of the 30-day month. Penny Marshall’s “A League of Their Own” (1992) has one more month to teach you that “There’s no crying in baseball,” and why not watch it in support of the Prime Video series that can’t seem to catch a break? If you’re more in the mood for a childish story and magical whimsy, the person you need is “Nanny McPhee” (2005).
Franchise films exiting the streamer’s rotation this month include “Rocky,” “Rocky II,” “Rocky III,” “Rocky IV” and “Rocky V.” Along with those wrestling movies, other films departing at the end of September are “Snow White & the Huntsman,” “Star Trek,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Titanic” and “Warm Bodies.”

In December 2022, the critically acclaimed, mega-successful stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Matilda came to cinemas translated into a punchy, inventive feature film. Written by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly with songs and lyrics by comedian and writer Tim Minchin (Upright), the musical – like the book – is a terrific blend of poignancy and rebellious satire.
Famously adapted for a 1996 American feature film starring writer Mara Wilson in the title role, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary young girl born into a neglectful family who are unable to see, or appreciate her uniqueness. Matilda Wormwood isn’t just an academic genius, and when she goes up against the cruel, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull, she uses her powers to right a generational wrong.
The new film retains the original musical’s anarchic heart, chiefly by retaining its director Matthew Warchus, who pulled the whole thing together...

Netflix gained a new competitor last month (sort of) when HBO Max and Discovery+ combined forces to create the confusingly-named Max. With its list of new releases for June 2023, however, Netflix doesn’t have too much to worry about.
This month is filled with some major Netflix original titles, not the least of which is The Witcher season 3 volume 1 on June 29. Though star Henry Cavill is set to leave the Polish folklore/video game adaptation in season 4, he remains very much entrenched as the titular Witcher in this next go-around. Other big TV hits include Manifest season 4 part 2 (June 2), Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources season 2 (June 9), and animated King Kong series Skull Island (June 22). That’s not even to mention the return of Black Mirror season 6. That still has yet to receive a release date but we have no doubt it will be properly epic once it arrives.

Emma Thompson stars in Netflix's new movie "Matilda," based on the musical of the same name which, in turn, is based upon Roald Dahl's 1988 novel. In the film, Thompson stars as Miss Agatha Trunchbull, the devious, horrible headmistress of Matilda's school who openly hates the kids she's in charge of. Miss Trunchbull has multiple songs in the show, which might leave viewers wondering if Thompson did her own singing for the part. Yes, Thompson is really singing in "Matilda."
Thompson and the rest of the cast were actually live-singing on set, she said during a Dec. 7 interview on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon." During her appearance, the host played a clip of her singing "The Smell of Rebellion," during which she climbs a large structure. The legendary actress Dame Angela Lansbury, who has delivered memorable performances in countless film roles from 1944 to 2017, died at the age of 96. She reportedly passed “peacefully in her sleep at home” early in the morning Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The sad news of the death of Angela Lansbury, just a few days shy of her 97th birthday, brought to an end one of the longest and most storied careers in Hollywood history. While she will perhaps be best remembered for the 265 episodes (and four feature-length movies) she spent playing best-selling mystery writer Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, a stint that earned her a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “most prolific amateur sleuth”, Lansbury packed her eight decades on stage and screen with a host of memorable roles. To each of them, she brought a whimsical humour and gentle warmth which could sometimes mask her deceptively sharp wit.

Angela Lansbury passed away on Tuesday (11 October) aged 96, her family announced.
While the renowned actor will be remembered by most as mystery writer Jessica Fletcher from the CBS hit series Murder, She Wrote, she also played a starring role as the supercilious Aunt Adelaide in 2005’s Nanny McPhee.
The family favourite film starring Emma Thompson as the eponymous, magical childminder played an important role in Lansbury’s life.
In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Lansbury credited the film and Thompson with helping her recover from the 2003 death of her husband, actor/producer Peter Shaw.
“Nanny McPhee pulled me out of the abyss. I love Emma [Thompson]. She has an enormous heart,” she said.
Thompson recalled offering Lansbury the role in a speech at the 2013 Governors Awards in Los Angeles.
“Don’t be ridiculous, that’s like asking for a slice of the moon to be delivered,” Thompson remembered when Lansbury was first pitched for the role.

NATPE And Edinburgh In Turmoil
Nasty news from NATPE: This month was supposed to be all about people getting back together at industry events. Certainly, in the international TV industry, everyone we speak to is – genuinely, for once – excited about returning to Mipcom later this month. However, October has started horribly for fans of travelling to entertainment industry confabs: On Monday, NATPE filed for bankruptcy instead collecting its things from Miami and moving them to the Bahamas as planned, and then it emerged the Edinburgh International Film Festival has gone the same way. Although gray autumnal clouds may have made an unwanted appearance over the British capital for the opening night of the 2022 BFI London Film Festival on Wednesday, the noise, color and upbeat song and dance nature of curtain-raiser Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical — getting its world premiere at the Royal Festival Hall — ensured it was anything but a drab affair.
Starring Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham and newcomer Alisha Weir (who plays the lead), the adaptation — a Netflix and Sony/Tristar collaboration — comes from Matthew Warchus, artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre and based on his own phenomenally successful stage adaptation of the beloved children’s book alongside writer Dennis Kelly and songwriter Tim Minchin, which first hit the West End in 2012.

Exclusive: Oscar-winner Emma Thompson, who plays Miss Trunchbull, the horrible headmistress who bullies a book-loving schoolgirl and her classmates in Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical, has revealed how she had trouble getting her child co-stars to loathe her.
”They thought I was Nanny McFucking McPhee,” she said referring to the stern-looking but soft-hearted nursery nurse she played on screen in Nanny McPhee and sequel Nanny McPhee Returns.
“I was supposed to terrify them. I mean, the characters they played were terrified of me, but they weren’t!,” the actress told Deadline at the after-party following the world premiere screening of Matilda The Musical, which opened the BFI London Film Festival at the Royal Festival Hall on Wednesday night.

On the surface, a film set primarily in one hotel room with a pair of actors might seem simple. But in the case of “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” which premieres Jan. 22 at the Sundance Film Festival, limiting the location gave the film an opportunity to explore what star Emma Thompson calls “the emotional landscape.”
Thompson plays Nancy, a widow and former teacher who has stepped outside her comfort zone for the first time in her life and hired a sex worker, the titular Leo Grande, played by “Peaky Blinders” actor Daryl McCormack. With a script by Katy Brand and direction by Sophie Hyde, what unfolds is a frank, funny and touching adventure as these two very different individuals get to know one another and themselves a little better.
Variety spoke with Thompson, McCormack and Hyde about putting together the film, which was shot in 19 days. Says Thompson with a laugh,...

UK charity the Mark Milsome Foundation, which was formed after the tragic killing of British camera operator Mark Milsome on the set of BBC/Netflix show Black Earth Rising in Ghana in 2017, is launching an online health and safety course geared towards improving production safety.
The interactive course was already in the works when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set of U.S. production Rust last month.
It was first conceived following a 2020 survey of UK crew conducted by the foundation that showed that 62% of participants believed current health and safety regulations needed improving.
Foundation chairman Kirk Jones, the filmmaker whose credits include Nanny McPhee, has been overseeing the creation of the course. It has been designed with the assistance of Media Safety, which oversees safety for UK and U.S. studios shooting in the UK, and has been supported by the National Film and Television School.

Thompson stars as Nancy Stokes, a 55-year-old widow yearning for some adventure, human connection and good sex, which she was robbed of in her stable but stale marriage. To make things right, the ex-teacher devises a plan and hires the services of Leo Grande, a sex worker in his early 20s, for a night of bliss.

The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Despite first shooting to prominence almost a quarter of a century ago in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, Ewan McGregor has largely tended to avoid starring in either big budget blockbusters or franchises in general, with the notable exception of his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy that he’s set to reprise in the upcoming Disney Plus limited series.

As the U.K.’s film and TV industry looks to restart, a crucial 10-day consultation period is underway on production guidelines that are now circulating across the industry. (Excerpts of the guidelines are published below.)
More than six weeks on from the March 23 lockdown, industry figures such as John McVay, head of producers’ trade body Pact, warns that restarting business “is not like switching a factory back on.”
“A lot of people are saying, ‘You should just do what Denmark or other countries did,’ (but) every country is different. Just because Denmark does it one way, it doesn’t mean it will work here,” McVay tells Variety.
The route to get cameras rolling again has required a complex network of British Film Institute-led working groups on high-end film and TV production, exhibition and distribution, broadcasting and independent film — all of whom have spent more than a month compiling best...

The film will face competition from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the latest edition to the franchise that has spawned a host of entries over the last decade.

We have a fun second trailer for Late Night, starring Emma Thompson as an aging late night talk show host who is losing touch with her audience, and Mindy Kaling, a new staff writer on her show who may be her last shot at relevance with a young and diverse audience. The movie premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to fantastic reviews, and I am pretty excited for it. It looks like it will be really funny and well-acted.
Thompson and Kaling are joined in the cast by John Lithgow (3rd Rock From the Sun), Ike Barinholtz (Blockers), Hugh Dancy (The Path), Max Casella (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Paul Walter Hauser (Cobra Kai), Denis O'Hare (American Horror Story), Reid Scott (Veep), and Amy Ryan (The Office).
Enjoy the trailer below and watch Late Night when it hits theaters on June 7th.

Oscar-winner reveals that producers rush screenplays and start shooting films before scripts are finished
Emma Thompson may be best known as one of Britain’s finest actors but she is also an acclaimed writer, having won an Oscar for her Sense and Sensibility screenplay. Now she has hit out at producers who rush films before scripts are finished, citing a lack of respect for writers and their work.
Thompson, whose screenwriting also includes the hit family film Nanny McPhee, said it was now common for films to begin shooting before the screenplays were ready. “Funnily enough, it’s most common in films that cost the most,” she said.

Arya Stark is a bona-fide badass, and so is the lady who plays her, English actress Maisie Williams. Despite her ascension to superstardom at just 12 years old, when she first auditioned to play sword-wielding, patriarchy-crushing avenger Arya on Game of Thrones, you might not know all that much about the relatively private, newly pink-haired actress. You'll see her in plenty of upcoming projects over the next couple of years once HBO airs the final season of Game of Thrones, but in the meantime, here are a couple of interesting facts we bet you never knew about the now-21-year-old star.
Maisie began performing in school plays as a young girl, but her first passion was actually dance. She began taking formal lessons at the age of 10 at Susan Hill's School of Dance, though her parents couldn't afford to send her to a performing arts school.

He may have the same piercing baby blues as The End of the F***ing World's Alex Lawther and The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore, but believe it or not, neither Lawther nor Highmore is the actor who plays Otis Milburn on the Netflix series Sex Education. Otis - an inexperienced high school student who decides to team up with a bad girl and open an underground sex therapy clinic at school, thanks to the advice bestowed on him by his sex therapist mother - is actually played by Asa Butterfield, and if you don't recognize his name, then you should. The 21-year-old English actor began his career at the ripe age of 9, and we have a feeling that Sex Education is not the first time you've seen him on the screen.
