Tyler Hynes is a busy man.
This month, he released an online avante garde short film in four parts, creating a once-in-a-lifetime with his friend and collaborator, Ash Thorp.
Tonight, he'll be representing in a more traditional movie on Hallmark. Both works are driven by his personal experience with his Tyler Enthusiasts (he doesn't like the term fans), and his desire to bring joy and light into the world.
Like so many other actors in this genre, he's eloquent and well-spoken, which makes talking with him an absolute delight.
What are the three most exciting things happening in your professional world right now?
Three? I mean, I can tell you the number one thing would be this thing that seems to revolve with the folks that watch these movies and seem to want to participate with me for whatever reason.

“American Factory” has been named the best documentary of 2019 at the 13th annual Cinema Eye Honors ceremony, which were presented on Monday evening in New York City.
The film, executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions, and distributed by Netflix, is an examination of an Ohio glass factory that was taken over by a Chinese company in an uneasy cultural alliance. It prevailed in a category in which all six nominees — “American Factory,” “Apollo 11,” “For Sama,” “Honeyland,” “Midnight Family” and “One Child Nation” — are also on the Oscars shortlist for documentary features.
The “American Factory” directors, Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, also won the award for Outstanding Direction. The Outstanding Production category resulted in a tie between two films set in Syria, “The Cave” and “For Sama.”

While we wait to see what director Taika Waititi ends up doing with his live-action adaptation of Akria, we have an incredibly cool fan-made tribute for you to watch. It's called Awaken Akira and it was created by Ash Thorp and Zaoeyo. It took them over a year to create this one-minute tribute and as you'll see, it turned out extremely cool! The short shows their love for Katsuhiro Otomo’s work by digitally updating some of the most iconic scenes from Akira. It's visually stunning work! It also comes complete with the incredible musical score. Akira is considered one of the most influential anime films of all time and these guys did an incredible job paying tribute to it. "A complex system of beliefs." We're taking a brief step outside of our comfort zone to share this fascinating, mesmerizing short film titled Edifice, made by designer / filmmaker / visual artist Ash Thorp (follow him @ashthorp). This experimental short features stunning imagery designed to consider existential questions about "who we are, where we come from, and where we are heading." It's only seven minutes and features no dialogue, only visuals. The concept is to present visually a "journey from stardust to singularity." Most of the short films we share contain some sort of narrative or plot device, but this one is all about the concept, evoking profound existential & philosophical thoughts through an entrancing visual experience. See below. Thanks to Ash for the note on this. Original description from Vimeo: "Edifice is an experimental short film inspired by personal beliefs of who we are, where we come from, and where we...

Another wicked cool cyber punk short film to watch. Lost Boy is the latest project from PostPanic Pictures, an Amsterdam-based production company (also behind the sci-fi short film Sundays). The film is a pitch for a feature sci-fi project from directors Anthony Scott Burns and Ash Thorp, and introduces us to a dark, gritty, barren world. Inspired by American action classics and Japanese samurai films, this has a true cyber punk design aesthetic, and looks damn good for a short film made on a limited budget. I really dig the world design and the costumes, though there's not much of a story here but hopefully that is something they're working on for the feature. The vehicle that shows up at the end is probably the coolest part. Check this out. Thanks to Quiet Earth for the tip on this. Short description from Vimeo: "Year unknown. Population Zero. Anthony Scott Burns should be a familiar name to many readers of this site by now. We've raved about his short film work in the past and while word about Burns has spread thanks to his segment in the Holidays horror anthology - he did Father's Day - and fans await his feature debut Our House, he's back again to tease a different upcoming project. Teaming up once again with collaborator Ash Thorp along with Dutch production house PostPanic - the company responsible for the gorgeous Sundays scifi short now being turned into a feature - they've just released the proof of concept for a punk scifi short titled Lost Boy. Dutch production company PostPanic will release their short 'Lost Boy' later today. Directed by the American based Ash Thorp and the Canadian Anthony Scott Burns, 'Lost Boy' will unleash a savage desolate dystopian world where bizarre characters derived from the pen of director Ash Thorp battle eachother for survival. The short is said to rely on props and elobarate costumes to create an otherworly grim vision of our future. The short movie said to be influenced by classic sci fi like Blade Runner, Alien as well Spaghetti Westerns and The Warriors. PostPanic earlier short 'Sundays' is given the Hollywood treatment at the moment. The production company already released a teaser for the short that will appear later today....

Before you ask: no, this is not a trailer, teaser or even proof-of-concept for any upcoming live-action version of Shirow Masamune's famous manga Ghost in the Shell, or the many anime it spawned. Like the live-action Akira trailer last month, this is a project made by fans, and 100% non-commercial as the makers don't hold any of the franchise rights. Computer artist Ash Thorp, designer Filipe Carvalho, and photographer Tim Tadder wanted to do a photo tribute to the iconic opening credits sequence of Oshii Mamoru's anime version. Just a nice labor of love, which would allow them to show off their skills. But the idea caught on amongst other participators of artist group Project 2501, and the tribute quickly became a short film...

Known for his work on such films as The Amazing Spiderman 2 and X-Men: First Class, graphic designer Ash Thorp has released his own very special homage to Mamoru Oshii’s classic Ghost in the Shell. Using a team of 30 skilled artist, Thorp developed 39 live-action still images that recreate the stunning opening sequence of the film based on the manga of Shirow Masamune.
“I originally wanted this to be just a fun side project to create with some friends on my free time over a time span of a month, if that,” Thorp recently told The Verge. “But as we opened up the opportunities it got bigger and more complicated as the team grew.”
You can view all of the re-created stills on Thorp’s official website for the project (may be Nsfw) and check out a behind-the-scenes featurette of the project below.

Ghost in the Shell is such an awesome, classic anime. I don't know anyone who has seen that film and hasn't loved it. Earlier this year it was announced that Rupert Sanders would be directing a live action version of the movie, but it's hard to imagine that a big budget Hollywood movie will get it right. The manga was created by Shirow Masamune, and the anime adaptation of it was directed by Mamoru Oshii.
We can only hope that it turns out as good as what Ash Thorp is doing with his live-action Ghost in the Shell photography project, called Project 2501. Thorp brought together a talented team of artists and put together an homage to the animated movie’s opening title sequence.
Here is a set of photos from the project and an intriguing behind the scenes video of how they are putting it together. It's really quite spectacular.

We've got another amazing collection of poster art from Mondo, this time inspired by classic 1980s sci-fi films The Terminator, Aliens and Predator.
The Terminator poster was done by Killian Eng. Aliens was created by Ken Taylor who said,

Predator was made by Ash Thorp, who said this about his,
“I remember being scared senseless while watching ‘Predator’ for the first time, and once it pulled off its mask, I lost it,” he said. “Such a great movie moment and iconic monster design. I knew I had to capitalize on and pay homage to that iconic form that really...
