[Welcome back, readers! With the 2017 Sundance Film Festival beginning this week, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the great midnight movies that have come out of the fest over the years. Click here for more Midnight Memories from Daily Dead!]
It’s unfortunate that when many fans hear the names “Lucky McKee” and “Sundance” mentioned in the same sentence, the first thing that comes to mind is an incident in which an audience member had a total public meltdown after the festival screened McKee’s fourth feature (fifth if you count Red, which he co-directed), The Woman, in 2011. After the movie—an adaptation of a novel of the same name he co-wrote with Jack Ketchum—premiere as part of Sundance’s Midnights program, an irate man stood up and began shouting that the movie was “disgusting” and that it degraded both men and women. The freak-out was caught on video and went viral within the film community, garnering The Woman a reputation as a piece of art so potentially transgressive and shocking that it would warrant such a response even before most people saw the movie.

Jug Face, starring Lauren Ashley Carter (The Woman), Sean Bridgers (HBO's Deadwood), Larry Fessenden (I Sell The Dead), and Sean Young (Blade Runner), will be available via VOD July 8th, and released theatrically August 9th. The film's wildly imaginative and creepy story centers on a pregnant young woman trying to save herself after she discovers she's been selected for sacrifice. Director Chad Crawford Kinkle generously spent some time with FEARnet discussing his debut feature film. FEARnet: What films inspired you to become a filmmaker? Chad Crawford Kinkle: All movies really. But my favorite film is It's a Wonderful Life, followed by the original Texas Chainsaw and Rosemary's Baby. How many unproduced feature screenplays had you written before Jug Face, and are there themes in Jug Face that you explored in these previous screenplays? I guess six. They all died at different stages. But during that time, I wrote the...

The Woman Directed by: Lucky McKee Written by: Lucky McKee and Jack Ketchum Starring: Pollyanna McIntosh, Sean Bridgers, Angela Bettis, Lauren Ashley Carter, Zach Rand Every year there are a handful of films that make waves on the festival circuit and manage to get people talking -- not necessarily because they are great films but because they are shocking and controversial. Some would say that the ability to provoke is the sign of a great work of art, but it can also divide audiences and completely turn viewers off. Clearly this kind of hype is a double-edged sword, and yet it's hard to deny that it can bring a smaller film plenty of attention. Lucky McKee's The Woman is a film whose reputation precedes it. After causing one audience member to faint and another to stand up and berate the director at Sundance last year, it soon became the talk of the town.

Chiller TV's made-for-tv production, Ghoul, premiered last week at the Slamdance Film Festival. Yesterday we announced that it had an air date for Friday, April 13th. And today we have a review! John Marrone writes in from Slamdance, "As so often explored by Moderncine creations such as 'The Girl Net Door', 'Offspring', or 'The Woman' - what worse beast is there, than man? Genre crawlers looking to see a corpse eating beast or rape scenes in the tunnels beneath the graveyard should take note - this is not a hard-r film... With children engaging problems that would traumatize adults, and an acoustically driven soundtrack by Sean Spillane, Ghoul feels very much like a less offensive version of something between 'The Woman' and 'The Girl Next Door'."...

Everything happens as it should. There’s a reason for everything. There’s definitely a reason that USC (The University of Southern California) exists, and I’d be so bold as to say it was to bring the talents of Lucky McKee and Sean Spillane together. Lucky McKee is known for his talent behind the camera, as director of May, The Woods and most recently The Woman. Sean Spillane may not be as known at the moment, but his unadulterated talent showcased through the soundtrack to The Woman, makes it clear he should be.
Their initial meetings were as casual as any, both playing in bands while attending USC. They became friends and continued to play in the same scene. A few years later and they would both be off on their own paths away from school. A mutual friend suggested that Sean go see Lucky’s first film, May at its premiere,...

After six years, Toronto After Dark is bigger than ever. The films are better, the lines are longer and the fan-frenzy is wilder. This year’s chilling selection included: civil war zombies, creepy abductors, cliff-hanging killers, post-apocalyptic insanity and suburban hell – a sci-fi horror fan’s paradise.
Writer-director John Geddes’ Exit Humanity is a post-civil war zombie epic set in 1870’sTennessee. When his wife and son fall victim to the undead, Edward Young (Mark Gibson in a breakout performance) flees across the countryside for survival, but zombies are the least of his worries after he’s captured by a band of ruthless Confederate soldiers who are obsessed with conducting medical experiments. Geddes‘ concept of zombies in the old west is a fresh perspective on the popular genre. The film’s use of animation (a budgetary decision) advances the action excellently and the beautiful cinematography makes this a great-looking period movie.

“It’s pretty crazy!” director McKee, whose previous and touted directorial efforts include the 2002 film May, 2006’s The Woods and the Masters of Horror episode "Sick Girl", said of the buzz surrounding The Woman (review here). “I’m excited. Still have that old reliable turntable handy but not a lot of things to play on it? How does winning the soundtrack to Lucky McKee's controversial horror film The Woman on vinyl sound? We know the record itself sounds dark and powerful -- the perfect background to all your upcoming Halloween festivities!
Here are a few more details about the disc:
The Woman Motion Picture Soundtrack features music and lyrics from indie veteran Sean Spillane. Spillane, best known for his time in Subpop’s critically acclaimed band Arlo, his role in electro-pop/rock band Midway, and soundtrack work on films such as The United States of Leland, blends synth pop, Americana roots and an aura of sinister melodies to capture the eerie and gruesome atmosphere of one of this month's most anticipated films.

Writers: Lucky McKee and Jack Ketchum.
The Woman is film from director Lucky McKee and horror writer Jack Ketchum. These two have also teamed together on 2008's Red. Here, they bring at least one feral person out of the wilderness and into civilization. The result is a little chaotic, with a misogynistic theme bringing the film to a bloody conclusion. Not terribly exciting and not terribly ground-breaking, The Woman pokes fun at the nuclear family while these two writers also look at power roles. The Woman is more psychological thriller than horror film, which might disappoint some viewers.
