Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”
Well, sir, you don’t have to ask me twice!

American Idol history has proven that there’s one place besides the bottom 3 that you don’t want to be: Scheduled in the first slot on performance nights. Viewers with short-term memories are more likely to forget what the first contestant of the night brought to the table. Plus, as an Idol hopeful, it’s difficult to deliver a show-stopping number when the crowd itself is still warming up. But whereas being first in previous seasons merely meant that you had to cope with another contestant getting the spotlight (and, therefore, momentum going into the next week), the disadvantage this...

Nobody tries out for American Idol hoping to finish in a tie for tenth place. But the two contestants booted at the end of Thursday night’s Top 11 Redux results show have reason to take heart: After witnessing a harrowing performance-art piece titled “The Emperor Is Doing an Nc-17 Strip-Tease” (by Academy Award winner Jaime Foxx and Grammy winner will.i.am), Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia can leave the Idolverse knowing all it takes is a shred of talent — combined with copious luck, first-rate schmoozing skills, impeccable timing, corporate marketing dollars, brightly adorned backup dancers, and a healthy dose...

The first live results show of American Idol Season 10 aired last night and what an emotional night it was!
After 40 million votes were cast and over the course of two hours, the top 24 contestants were quickly cut down to America’s top 10 contestants and the Judges’ “Wild Cards,” making the final 13 contestants of the competition.
Host, Ryan Seacrest first called up singer-songwriter and pianist, Robbie Rosen as well as country boy, Scotty McCreery to have their fate read. Scotty’s fans beat out Robbie’s fans and Scotty officially became the first contestant in America’s Top 10 picks. Disappointed in Robbie not winning over America, the show was just beginning and wild cards had yet to be chosen.
Next up to find out their fate were Jordan Dorsey, Jovany Barreto, and Clint Jun Gamboa. Clint surprisingly did not make the cut, along with both Jovany and Jordan. Of the males,...

American Idol results show is kind of like a trip to the dentist’s chair: The faster you get through it, the better. But Thursday night’s two-hour extravaganza — in which the crop of 24 season 10 semifinalists was dramatically culled to a field of 13 — proved the exception to the rule. Okay, sure, that brief clip of Ta-Tynisa Wilson’s “Only Girl (In the World)” felt like the haunting touch of a dentist’s drill without the benefit of novocaine. But on the whole, the two hours zoomed right past, fueled by a laughing-gas giddiness that this year’s finalists, as a whole,...

“American Idol” shortened its list of singers tonight. By the end of the show there will be just 12 finalists staying and 12 going home. The public’s vote will count for 10 picked and the judges will pick two wildcards to go to the finals as well.
Ryan Seacrest said the voting reached new Idol records – 40 million in two nights.

This week, the Top 24 remaining contestants performed on the American Idol stage. Some of it was surprisingly amazing! And some of it… we horrendous. Tonight, Ryan Seacrest will announce who is going on to the Top 12. Here are our picks. And ahead, we have a special Gif to remember those who hopefully won’t make it through… Our Top 12 Dream Team: Ashthon Jones – Not our favorite but adorable and peppy. Robbie Rosen – Anyone who looks like one of the Sweathogs from Welcome Back Kotter gets an automatic pass in our book. Paul McDonald – Loved him in the bookshop in Notting Hill, still love him. Pia Toscano – Kinda boring and bland but pretty and bland. Brett Loewenstern – I would never deny myself the second-hand embarrassment that Bretty delivers in spades because I enjoy aural torture. (That sounds exactly as nasty as it should sound.) Thia Megia – Wasn’t really a fan...

After what's felt like years (Ok, just two months), "American Idol" finally got to its first live elimination show Thursday night (March 3), and it was not pretty. The biggest cut-down in show history came after host Ryan Seacrest said more than 40 million votes were cast over two performance nights.
The good news was that favorites like Lauren Alaina, Casey Abrams, Thia Megia and Jacob Lusk made the cut, but that meant that a few beloved singers like Brett Loewenstern and Julie Zorrilla were eliminated as the show revealed its top 13 finalists.
After copious time-killing segments, Seacrest finally got to the first elimination nearly 25 minutes into the two-hour episode, with country boy Scotty McCreery moseying into the top 10 while Robbie Rosen was sent packing. Next up were Clint Jun Gamboa,...

On Tuesday night (March 1), the 12 men remaining on "American Idol" competed for the coveted spots in the finals. In something of a rarity for "American Idol," the majority of the performances broadcast on Tuesday night were roundly excellent, with only a handful of missteps among the contestants (and in some of those performances gone awry, the judges didn't seem to notice very much). There was no single blow-away performance (save one), but the overall quality was extremely high.
Going into Tuesday night's show, the favorites on the MTV Newsroom blog "American Idol" Top 24 poll included Casey Abrams, Robbie Rosen, Brett Loewenstern, Stefano Langone and Scotty McCreery (with Paul McDonald and Jacob Lusk trailing just behind). With another high-profile presentation under each one of those belts, who has made the biggest move? Last night marked American Idol‘s first live show of the season where America finally got to cast its vote. We loved a lot of the performances last night—it’s definitely apparent that this season is the strongest ever—and it’s going to be sad to see seven of these guys not make it through. Personally, we think Jacob Lusk (Luther Vandross 2.0), James Durbin (Adam Lambert 2.0), Scotty McCreery (Deepest Voice Ever) and Casey Abrams (Dorky Beardo) are definitely going to make it, while Jordan Dorsey, Brett Loewenstern and Tim Halperin might be in trouble.
As for the rest, Paul “Whitest Teeth We’ve Ever Seen” McDonald, Robbie “Looks Just Like Cartoon Aladdin” Rosen, Stefano “Wait, isn’t he Jovany?” Langone, Jovany “Wait, no, that’s not Stefano” Barreto, and Clint Jun Gamboa are all question marks in our book—good, for sure, but not the best. America got its first official glimpse at the Top 12 men of season 10 Tuesday night (March 1) and things were as psychotically bipolar as a certain sitcom star currently making the rounds. (I'm looking at you, Emmanuel Lewis!)

First, we turned to noted producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, All-American Rejects, Flyleaf), who worked with "Idol" alum Chris Daughtry on his band's smash 2006 debut. He said he was impressed with sudden front-runner Jacob Lusk and Casey Abrams.
"I think Casey's one of the best ones left, and Jacob is amazing," said Benson, who started watching the show intently after working with Daughtry.

Now we're into the meat and potatoes portion of American Idol. The best part of the semi-finals is really gauging stage presence. This year there are only two nights of semi-finals for American Idol.
There are some advantages to the one-and-out version of this. It does make the season seem shorter, and with a less talented group, saves us the trouble of listening to abysmal performances week after week.
Unfortunately for some of the guys tonight, they did really well, but don't get the option of improving. So I'm going to go in order of performance, and then give my verdict if they are in the top twelve, borderline, or should start packing their bags now.
Seeing Randy in Simon's chair is really weird. I also miss the Ryan/Simon dynamic, but not enough to wish Simon back. I also found the intros a little jarring, and not informative as...

It's here! The moment has arrived! Finally we are going to see the "American Idol" contestants perform (pretty much) live and we get to start voting. Who ya got?
J.Lo is looking very chic for her first live show. Steven looks like he just stepped out of an Aerosmith concert next door and popped over to judge. Randy is the Man in Black.
There is a sign in the audience that says "Tourette's Rocks." If that sign-maker had really been thinking, the sign would read "Tourette's [expletive, expletive] Rocks."
Ryan kind of clears things up about the process at this point by saying that after tonight and tomorrow, the Top 5 guys and Top 5 girls advance, then the judges get to choose Wild Cards - presumably a couple of each gender? Since we are 11 or 12 weeks from the finale? Start with 14 finalists, that gets you through 12 weeks leaving two standing at the end.

"American Idol's" Top 24 is finally underway and as we've said before, we think it's their most talentes group of contestants ever.

The "American Idol" Top 24 is here! Fans, get your voting fingers ready. Before the guys take the stage Tuesday night (March 1), Zap2it thought we should offer some of our picks and predictions from our very own Tierney Bricker and Andrea Reiher.
Favorite Guy
Tierney: Paul McDonald. I don't know why producers decided to hide Paul in the "Idol" dungeon throughout the audition process, but I guess I should just be grateful they eventually let him out, right? Paul has worked his way through, not relying on a sob story or crazy antics -- just his unique (so overused, but true here) and distinctive voice. I don't think there's ever been a contestant more prepared for the "Idol" machine -- and fame in general -- than Paul.
Andrea: Scotty McCreery. Talk about a true downhome, old-school country voice. Plus, this year they are supposedly not going to be shoe-horning the Idols into various genres.

James Durbin and Scotty McCreery also stand out in front of live audience.

Steven Tyler holds up his swear sign on "American Idol" Tuesday

By the time the top 12 men on "American Idol" make it to the big stage, it's usually pretty easy to tell who is in it to win it and who will be going home after one week in the IdolDome.
And Tuesday night (March 1) was no exception, with some of this season's standouts proving again that they have their eye on the prize. While Casey Abrams and Jacob Lusk soared, James Durbin brought the rock thunder and Scotty McCreery did his country thing, dawg.
And, for the first time in "Idol" history, fans could also vote online for their favorite singer.

The "American Idol" top 24

They've already survived Hollywood Week, Las Vegas and even that very long walk down the airplane hangar, but now, the real competition begins. On Tuesday night (March 1), the "American Idol" Top 24 will sing for their lives — guys first, followed by the girls on Wednesday — and it will be up to viewers at home to determine just who moves on.
And though there's still a long way to go until we reach the finals in May, that hasn't stopped some "Idol" hopefuls from already surging to the front of the field ... at least, according to the oddsmakers, that is.
With the Top 24 set to tip off, the folks at Bodog.com have just released their odds for each of the remaining contestants, a list that's topped by early frontrunner (and Steven Tyler favorite) Lauren Alaina,...

After thousands of potential contestants, hundreds of Hollywood Week qualifiers and far too many tears to count, the 10th season of "American Idol" finally has its field of finalists. This year, 24 singers — 12 male, 12 female — will compete for the coveted top prize on the show (though if previous results are any indication, everybody will likely be gunning for second place). Though there was concern that the new lowered minimum age would turn the show into a knock-down, drag-out battle between over-managed teens, the final field is actually one of the more eclectic in recent memory. Though they'll be clawing at one another for the spotlight (and, most importantly, audience votes) over the next few weeks, right now they are one big happy "American Idol" family.

Contestants perform on "American Idol" on Wednesday

On Thursday night, "American Idol" revealed the remainder of the season 10 Top 24, a collection of singer/songwriters, balladeers, scatters, divas, perky teens and belters that will compete to become the heir to Lee DeWyze's throne (perhaps he's not the best example, but let's move on).
Unlike previous seasons, this year's crop of contenders is long on talent, short on sob stories — Chris Medina's exit made sure of that. And while it's probably too early to say this, we could be looking at the most-gifted field of singers in "Idol" history (or at least since the epochal third season). So it would probably benefit you to get to know the field before the cruel cut-downs begin.
And since we know you're busy, we've decided to condense each contestant into a quick,...
