Jessie Ware took the stage at the 2023 Mercury Prize awards ceremony at London’s Hammersmith Apollo last night to perform her vibrant single “Free Yourself.” Ware, a nominee for this year’s award, was joined by a band, horns section, and several back-up singers.
The ceremony, which ultimately awarded the Mercury Prize to London group Ezra Collective, featured numerous live performances from the nominees. Raye showcased her soulful, fast-talking track “The Thrill Is Gone” with an expansive band, while Shygirl performed her introspective song “Woe.”

Legendary pop star David Bowie was a man of eclectic pop culture tastes. The artist formerly known as Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke was famous for his mysterious, otherworldly personas, but he wasn't actually all mystery all the time. Bowie passed away in 2016, but fans can still excavate lists of his personal favorites and influences online, like this one from Far Out Magazine that notes that he counted "Trainspotting," "Un Chien Andalou," and "Moon" among his favorite movies.
Bowie may not have always been very public about his pop cultural interests, but we know about at least one television show that he loved prior to his passing: "Peaky Blinders." The BBC series turned Netflix original ended its TV run in 2022 (a film is still to come), but series creator Steven Knight revealed back in 2016 that Bowie was apparently a massive fan of the show. Lizzo has defied Tennesse’s controversial drag ban by welcoming drag performers onstage during her concert in Knoxville.
Several RuPaul’s Drag Race alums joined the Grammy winner’s show on Friday 21 April at the Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. Addressing thousands of fans in the crowd, Lizzo noted that she received requests to cancel her shows in Tennessee following Gov BillLee’s ban on public drag performances.
But the “Grrrls” singer said she believed the Volunteer State needed to hear “her message” the most.
The drag ban, which has been temporarily blocked by a federal judge, forbids “adult cabaret entertainment” on public property or in locations where it could be viewed by a minor — defining the term as “topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, male or female impersonators.”
“In light of recent and tragic events, I was told by people on the internet, ‘Cancel your shows in Tennessee, don’t go to Tennessee,...

‘No one is doing it like her’: Fans celebrate Zendaya’s surprise Coachella performance with Labrinth
Fans stormed Twitter to celebrate Zendaya’s surprise performance at Coachella 2023, alongside her Euphoria collaborator Labrinth.
The show marks the first time in eight years that Zendaya has performed live.
She joined the British musician on stage at the Mojave tent on Saturday (22 April) to sing “I’m Tired” and “All Of Us”, both of which were both written for the multiple Emmy-winning HBO series Euphoria.
Euphoric fans who attended the show shared pictures and videos from the performance, which brought respite to Coachella Valley after Frank Ocean’s “lacklustre” headlining act last weekend.
Others that couldn’t make it to the venue expressed their regret in the form of GIFs, and all-capitals congratulatory messages for Zendaya.
One person wrote: “Labrinth And Zendaya Performing Together Was Not On My Coachella Bucket List”.
“It’s Zendaya world and we’re just living in it,” another fan declared.

Given five minutes and a rock orchestra, which David Bowie would you be? Jake Shears dashes and gyrates across the Festival Hall stage in a glittery jumpsuit to “Watch That Man”, every inch the glam-pop starman. Anna Calvi, the grand dame, expands into the austere Gallic elegance of “Lady Grinning Soul”. Battersea’s Tawiah finds the plastic soul of vaudevillian oompah classic “The Prettiest Star”. And Lynks – sashaying through the moral detritus of “Cracked Actor” in fashionista head-mask and a sci-fi outfit that could only be described as glam-gimp – sets out to encapsulate Bowie the alien art god.
It’s only the rock orchestra, really, that holds them back. This full performance of Bowie’s sixth album has been reinterpreted by the Nu Civilisation Orchestra for the Southbank’s Aladdin Sane: 50 Years anniversary season, and somewhat misses the point of the thing. Bowie himself undersold the record by calling it...

Michael Stipe, Chvrches, and Coldplay are just a few of over 60 artists who’ve contributed to the 2023 iteration of EarthPercent’s annual Earth Day compilation album. Proceeds will benefit the Brian Eno-founded charity’s grant giving program, which directly benefits organizations fighting the ongoing climate crisis.
Stipe — a frequent eco-advocate — contributes the track “Give Me a Hand,” a moody art-pop number featuring guest vocals from folk singer and disability advocate Gaelynn Lea. Meanwhile, Chvrches reunite with their pal Robert Smith of The Cure for a rendition of their song “How Not to Drown,” recorded live at the Brixton Academy. Coldplay tap H.E.R. for another live track, this one being their ballad “Let Somebody Go” at the River Plate.
Also featured on the compilation are Eno, Dry Cleaning, dodie, Bring Me the Horizon, Julia Holter, Mystery Jets, and many more. Stream the album via Bandcamp below.

A celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of David Bowie’s album Aladdin Sane will be hosted in London.
The Aladdin Sane: 50 Years exhibition will mark half a century since the 1973 release of the singer’s sixth studio album.
Held at the Southbank Centre, the showcase will run for two months and include artwork from the album, including the well-known lightning flash portrait.
There will also be live music and talks throughout the exhibition.
The exhibition has been curated by Chris Duffy, the son of photographer Brian Duffy who worked with Bowie to create his highly recognisable lightning flash portrait.
“My father’s image of Bowie is often called the Mona Lisa of Pop,” said Duffy about the forthcoming exhibition.
“It’s important to remember it was the result of a short studio shoot using film, which then had to be sent out for commercial processing.”
He continued: “There were...

The announcement was made during a live ceremony, which recognises the best British album of the year, at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, west London, on Tuesday evening.
Simz, born Simbiatu Ajikawo, fended off competition from 11 other acts, including Leeds-based post-punks Yard Act, North Shields rock singer Sam Fender, and pop singer Harry Styles.
“Wow, I’m very overwhelmed, I’m very grateful, glory to God, thank you so much,” Simz said, accepting her award. “To my family over here, my loved ones right here. I want to say a huge thank you to the Mercury for this incredible prize.”

Sam Fender, Little Simz, and Harry Styles are among the artists shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize.
The shortlist was unveiled in July, comprising 12 albums – from rap and jazz to indie and Cornish folk-rock – that will compete for the coveted award at a ceremony held this September.
This year’s entries are among the most eclectic in recent years. Little Simz is shortlisted for the second time with her critically adored Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, following on from her nod in 2019 for Grey Area.
Rock singer Sam Fender receives his debut nomination for his second LP, Seventeen Going Under, as does pop star Harry Styles, who has been shortlisted for his third studio album, Harry’s House. His record is arguably the most “pure pop” album to be shortlisted since Ed Sheeran’s controversial nomination in 2017.
First-time nominees make up most of this year’s nominees, following last year’s shortlist which included 10 debuts.

– The Romani gypsy words spoken by Ruby in her fevered state appear to be “Tikno mora o beng o beng”. In this English/Romani dictionary, ‘tikno’ means child or small, ‘mora’ or ‘maura’ means to slay or kill, and ‘o beng’ means ‘the devil’. Tommy takes those words extremely seriously and instructs Lizzie to keep Ruby away from horses and water, and to have Johnny Dogs’ eldest wife Esmeralda put a Black Madonna pendant around Ruby’s neck for protection from curses.

Peaky Blinders fans in the U.S. still have to wait until Netflix drops Season 5 of the epic gangster drama on October 4, but in the UK last night, the season drew to a close on BBC One with a series high 3.8M overnight viewers. The figures edged the record previously set by this season’s episode 3, and come with a higher share at 22.6% of the audience. Overall, the Cillian Murphy-starrer has been blowing away numbers from Seasons 1-4 which aired on BBC Two. The first four episodes of this season have averaged 5.9M in 7-day consolidated viewing across all screens.
When the season debuted in late August, Peaky blazed back onto UK television with its best-ever launch at an average 3.7M viewers in the overnights (6.2M consolidated). Before the move to BBC One this year, Peaky’s highest overnight was the Season 4 finale at 2.4M. The Steven Knight-created...

Peaky Blinders blazed back onto UK television on Sunday night, scoring its best-ever debut with an average 3.7M viewers in the overnights. The Cillian Murphy-led series, now airing on BBC One, comfortably won the 9Pm slot with a 22.8 share, and peaked at 4M viewers.
The six-episode 5th season marks a move to Sundays and to BBC One from Peaky’s previous home on BBC Two, after it took the Best TV Drama BAFTA for Season 4. That run was Peaky’s most-watched, and the show the top drama of 2017 on BBC Two at a consolidated 3.3M viewers.
Because the Steven Knight-created series shifted networks this year, comparisons are not apples-to-apples. However, the 5th season premiere blasted past previous overnight launches which were led by Season 1 (2.4M average viewers), Season 4 (2.3M), Season 3 (2M) and Season 2 (1.7M).

Flat caps were out in force on Wednesday in Birmingham, England as the town welcomed the Season 5 world premiere of gangster epic Peaky Blinders. Birmingham is home to Peaky creator and writer Steven Knight, and to the series’ Shelby family that’s led by star Cillian Murphy’s Tommy. At a screening of the first episode of the upcoming season, Knight excited the crowd, saying that much of the next season will be shot locally. He added, “We have two more series to do and we are bringing Peaky Blinders home.” Deadline last year reported that talks were ongoing with the BBC on Seasons 6 and 7, and Knight’s comments certainly make them appear likely. However, producers and the network have yet to officially confirm.

My wife likes the group Haim, particularly that song "The Wire" and I like what M83 did with the score for Oblivion, so just maybe the collaboration of the two on the song "Holes in the Sky" for the The Divergent Series: Insurgent soundtrack will bring us together in some unexpected way. I don't know. The studio today released the full tracklisting for the upcoming release, which will be available digitally on March 17 with the film hitting theaters three days later on March 20. I'm actually seeing it the Monday of that week (the 16th) so we'll see if this one can improve on the absolutely awful first film. Check out the tracklisting below and listen to "Holes in the Sky". The ingredients for Ya franchises were set by "Twilight" and copied by everyone else: cast rising young actors in the lead roles, tell a dystopian/fantasy tale mixed with tortured romance, and then dump some indie rock on top to sell the feels. "Insurgent" continues to work with that playbook and the soundtrack details for the upcoming sequel have arrived. Frankly, it's a bit sparse, with Lionsgate clearly showing things were on a bit of a budget here. There are only seven songs (versus sixteen for "Divergent"), but M83 is back for another round, teaming with Taylor Swift's besties in Haim. Woodkid is also back, pairing up with Swedish chanteuse Lykke Li. The terrible Imagine Dragons inflict their work on everyone as well, with Sohn, Anna Calvi, and a couple more rounding out the package. It's not exactly the most abundant mixtape, but superfans will probably still be pleased.

This year's other nominees were Anna Calvi, East India Youth, GoGo Penguin, Jungle, Kate Tempest, Nick Mulvey, Polar Bear and Royal Blood. This year's prestigious Barclaycard Mercury Prize is eschewing big names when it comes to shortlisting 2014's best albums from the UK, with former Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn sharing space with newcomers and relatively obscure artists such as Fka twigs, Royal Blood, Bombay Bicycle Club, Nick Mulvey, and others. “This year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize shortlist confirms that these are fascinating times for UK music”, says Simon Frith, Chair of Judges. “There are seven outstanding debut albums here, and five records by more established artists, all pursuing exciting new directions. What most impressed the judges was the inventive passion with which musicians explore music and emotional possibilities, refusing to be pinned down by rules or genre.” The overall winner of the year will be revealed at the Barclaycard Mercury Prize Awards Show at the Roundhouse in London on Wednesday, October 29. Previous winners in recent years have included James Blake,...

Kate Bush, most famous for her songs “Running Up That Hill” and “Don’t Give Up,” had her first live performance in 35 years on Tuesday to unanimously positive reviews.
#KateBush: Singer Returns After 35 Years
Bush put on a dramatic stage show at London’s Eventim Apollo venue—involving surrealist sets, monsters and paper airplanes. David Mitchell, author of Cloud Atlas and the upcoming The Bone Clocks, who is known for his unreal concepts and imagery, helped Bush develop the visuals and themes apparently in the show.
Her 35-year absence has long been contributed to several factors. She wanted to tend to her then-young family, she was a known perfectionist who wanted everything just right, and early on in her (first and final) tour in 1979, her lighting director fell to his death.

I’m changing things up a little bit this month. Instead of the usual Six (or whatever number I’m in the mood for) Things You Should Be Listening To, I’ve decided to mix things up somewhat. As you doubt gathered from the change in feature title.
In celebration of End of the Road Festival, this coming end of August, I’ve decided to go with an End of the Road special for this month’s feature. Let’s just briefly cover why;
Two weeks today I’ll have quit my job, having handed in my notice two weeks prior to today.
Two weeks tomorrow, or today for all you readers who read this on its day of posting, I will be on the road to End of the Road.
I am very excited about both of these facts. However, I’m not going to bore you with the...

'Horribly funny' Irish movie debut by John Michael McDonagh beats Submarine and Attack the Block
A debut film that became the most successful independently funded Irish movie ever has won the Guardian First Film Award. The Guard, directed by John Michael McDonagh, is a black comedy about a cynical, boozy policeman played by Brendan Gleeson, who takes on three drug dealers. Gleeson was nominated for a Golden Globe for the role.
Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw, one of the judges, said it was a work of "originality and wit … horribly funny, deliciously incorrect, with an unexpectedly stirring, old-fashioned friendship between two lawmen."
In a strong year for film debuts, The Guard beat the Tyrannosaur, Submarine, and Attack the Block to win the prize. McDonagh, who was born in London but made his film in Ireland, described his win as terrific. "I read over the long list and thought there were...

In a year when it feels like Adele is unstoppable with her album 21, Pj Harvey managed to do the impossible and beat the British chanteuse when she took home one of England's top music honors, the Mercury Prize, for her album Let England Shake.
"I'm delighted and really happy to have won the prize tonight and especially for this album, which I had put so much into," Harvey told reporters in the press room after receiving the award. "And I knew I had achieved what I had set out to do with it, and you can only hope it'll appeal to a wider audience."
Harvey is the only repeat winner of the Mercury Prize, but her first win was somewhat bittersweet.

In a world where awards are given based on talent, the Mercury Prize, one of the UK's -- and the music industry's -- most prestigious awards, will be handed to one British musician (or musical group) tonight. In the guessing game leading up to the evening, we've somehow ended up with two favorites. But doesn't a favorite mean there can only be one?
It seems different metrics are being used to determine what constitutes a favorite. According to the Guardian, Pj Harvey is the favorite to win this evening, with bookmakers Ladbrokes and Paddy Power giving her 5/4 odds, as opposed to much lower 5/1 odds for Adele. The BBC also places Harvey as the favorite, citing the bookmakers as well. Harvey won the prize once before in 2001, for Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea. If she wins again, she'll be the first artist to ever take home the Mercury twice.

Over here in Rusty-land it's one of those Wednesday that seems to be taking forever but at the same time every so often I'll look up at the clock and be like "wait, it's what time now? Crap." I find this to be a particular problem with Wednesdays, perhaps because of the transition from first half of the week to second half of the week at least if you're going by the standard Monday to Friday week schedule. Although perhaps I should be more upbeat since according to today's xkcd Wednesday is frequently Ladies' night. Oh, right, there's also some television going on. A few of those reality series that some of you adore, so that's cool. So, here's your Wednesday night TV, which will be on both forever from now and sooner than I think it will:

Anna Calvi’s self-titled album, recently shortlisted for the U.K. Mercury Prize, has been a grower with me in the last few weeks. Now, an interview with Calvi in The Guardian has bumped it up even further. A lot of reviewers have referenced the cinematic quality of Calvi’s songs and, indeed, singles like “Blackout” make one think that she’d be a natural for the next James Bond soundtrack. So, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Calvi’s inspirations are a lot less obvious. Indeed, the only movie that has inspired one of her songs is one of the past decade’s best — Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg.
From The Guardian:
Your music has a very cinematic feel. Do you think of it in a visual way?
Yes. I’ve always been drawn to the visual side of creativity. I’ve always painted – I nearly went to art school.
