America has the Oscars; France has the César Awards. In a normal year, being nominated for 13 of the latter would be a sign of an exceptional achievement in French cinema — a phenomenon on par with “Amélie” or “A Prophet” commanding recognition in nearly every category en route to worldwide acclaim. But 2020 was not a normal year, and it’s a bit misleading to see writer-director Emmanuel Mouret’s mildly carbonated ensemble drama “Love Affair(s)” up for so many awards, knowing it’s hardly insta-classic material.
The movie, which was to premiere at Cannes had the festival not been canceled by the coronavirus, concerns the romantic entanglements of (at least) nine characters whose actions often contradict the way they see themselves. How can we be so sure? These eloquent characters love to hear themselves talk — and so do we, as there’s a poetry to their near-constant stream of conversation...

Emmanuel Mouret’s semi-circular Love Affair(s), aka The Things We Say, The Things We Do starring Camélia Jordana, Niels Schneider, Vincent Macaigne, Guillaume Gouix, Julia Piaton, Émilie Dequenne, and Jenna Thiam, produced by Frédéric Niedermayer has received a record 13 César nominations and is an éclair of a highlight in New York’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema.
Unlike Nicole Garcia's Lovers, Mouret presents us with characters who seem to be under no economic or, God forbid, existential straits. Love Affair(s), not as circular as Marcel Ophüls’ La Ronde based on Schnitzler’s play, but with just as many entanglements, explores love lives in turmoil. Shot by Laurent Desmet (Mouret’s Lady J), the soundtrack runs the gamut from Clair de Lune to Peer Gynt and back. Their jobs (documentary editor, translator, in the building...

The set-up is a classic one: two strangers, thrown together by circumstance, while away the time chatting about love against the stunning backdrop of the French countryside. Not a bad way to spend a vacation, and certainly not a bad way to spend two hours of a movie. But director Emmanual Mouret’s winsome “Love Affairs” , using its central couple (the appealing Camélia Jordana and Niels Schneider) as the entry point into a series of interconnected stories about the messiness of love.
The film comes across as a more serious “Love Actually” and a much better variation on “Valentine’s Day” or “New Year’s Eve.” Mouret anchors his romantic dramedy in the growing bond between Daphne (Jordana) and Maxime (Schneider), as they get to know each other by sharing their own past tales of romance gone awry. Mouret doesn’t reveal his interconnected narrative until well into the film’s first act,...

When was the last time Novalis (writer of the early Romantic movement and champion of the blue flower) was quoted in a film? Jean-Paul Civeyrac's A Paris Education (shot by Pierre-Hubert Martin, edited by Louise Narboni), starring Andranic Manet (Katell Quillévéré's Heal The Living) with Sophie Verbeeck (Jérôme Bonnell's All About Them), Diane Rouxel (Frédéric Mermoud's Moka), Jenna Thiam (Cédric Kahn's Wild Life), Gonzague Van Bervesseles, and Corentin Fila, illuminates the sundry elements of what actually constitutes education.
Jean-Paul Civeyrac: "I think there's a parallel there with the end of Flaubert's Sentimental Education where the characters say, what we lived that was most powerful, is something that happened before.

“Fashion has the power to transform us. It’s not so much about who you are but who you want to be. Even those who hate fashion make a statement with what they wear, if only to say to the world, ‘I don’t give a damn.’”
Such are the wise words by fashion house owner Paul Sabine (Richard Coyle). If only Amazon‘s “The Collection” actually heeded them.
Set in Paris 1947, the atelier Paul Sabine House is tasked by a wealthy and powerful investor with restoring Paris as the haute couture capital of the world. The wartime German occupation of the city, however, has cast a long shadow, and our Parisians are having a hard time shaking off that oppression, the rationing mindset and past decisions.

Season two of the French series The Returned debuts on Sundance TV on Halloween, but is there more story to tell? The creator of the series, Fabrice Gobert, spoke about the series with Digital Spy, and he is not against a third season.
"I think there can be a third, but season two is really constructed as a mirror to season one. There are a lot of questions, a lot of mysteries, a lot of stories that began in season one, and those had to be completed in season two. So we can imagine easily season three, but I think it would be different from the two first chapters."
Two members of the cast, Pierre Perrier and Jenna Thiam, also teased the possibility of a third season. However, season two will give fans a satisfactory ending.
Are you a fan of The Returned? Would you want more? Tell us...

Warning: This article contains spoilers that some readers may prefer to avoid.
Good news - The Returned is back, with its beautiful people, Gallic drama and Mogwai chords. Bad news - the first series aired in 2013 and, two years on, all we can remember is "the Lake Pub".
Great news - Digital Spy has prepared a handy guide, for anyone looking to refresh their memories ahead of tonight's (superb) series two premiere:
The basics
The dead have begun returning to life in a small French mountain town. But these are no flesh-chomping zombies - beyond a ferocious appetite, the 'Returned' appear perfectly healthy and normal.
The town, though, is plagued by other strange phenomena - power outages, the reservoir's water level dropping dramatically and strange marks appearing on the bodies of both the living and dead.
What happened in series one's finale?
Remember Toni (Grégory Gadebois), manager of the Lake Pub?...

The Returned series 2 arrives on More4 in the UK tonight, Friday the 16th of October. We spoke to its creators and cast…
Fabrice Gobert, the French creator of supernatural drama The Returned, speaks good English. An inevitability of using a second language though, is the odd grammatical slip. One such slip made by Gobert at the press launch for The Returned series two is too perfect to let pass by. A pitfall of writing fantasy TV, Gobert said, is that “you can lost yourself”.
Add a capital letter to the ‘l’ word, and you can say that again.
During its enviably long run, Lost became both the high and low benchmark for atmospheric, existentially fraught TV dramas. Its early seasons gripped viewers, but its later runs frustrated many by failing to achieve the perfect ratio of mysteries to answers. That’s the tricky challenge The Returned is facing in series two.

The Us remake of chilling French drama The Returned ran for just one season - and it's fair to say the team behind the original show were not fans.
Pierre Perrier (Simon) and Jenna Thiam (Lena) told press including Digital Spy that they were not impressed by what little they saw of the American series.
"I saw ten minutes of it," Perrier admitted. "It was the same shots. But... bad. So I stopped it."
"I've seen it very briefly," Thiam added. "But there's no artistic movement behind it. It's just, 'Oh this was a big hit, let's copy it'. - it's a different way of thinking."
Fabrice Gobert, creator of the original Les Revenants, confirmed that he played no role in the Us remake, but did speak briefly with its showrunner, Lost veteran Carlton Cuse.
"They asked me if I wanted to participate, but I couldn't, because I was writing season two [of the French show]," he explained.

While the dead returning to life has traditionally been the foray of the horror genre, a number of movies and tv shows over the years have used the premise to tell different kinds of stories. Among the latter group is the French television series The Returned. The Lake Pub is back open for business on Friday, October 16 at 9pm.
The series will also be moving from Channel 4 to More4.
The Returned centres on a small French town where many of the deceased rise from the dead, seemingly fine and normal.
Series two picks up six months later, with Adele (Clotilde Hesme) about to give birth to Simon's (Pierre Perrier) child.
Lena (Jenna Thiam) and her father Jerome (Frederic Pierrot) are still searching for Claire (Anne Consigny) and Camille (Yara Pilartz), while a mysterious man named Berg (Laurent Lucas) pays a visit to the town, appearing to know more than he actually claims.
The second run is getting a Halloween premiere in the Us, launching October 31 on SundanceTV.

The Returned will finally be back on our screens this autumn - but the spooky French thriller is shifting channels.
The unorthodox zombie series is moving from Channel 4 to More4 for its second series.
It's been two years since The Returned gripped the nation with its tale of deceased French folk coming back from the dead.
Set six months on from the events of the first series, series two will see Adele (Clotilde Hesme) about to give birth to Simon's (Pierre Perrier) child.
Meanwhile Lena (Jenna Thiam) and her father Jerome (Frederic Pierrot) search desperately for Claire (Anne Consigny) and Camille (Yara Pilartz).
Matters are complicated further when a stranger named Berg (Laurent Lucas) - who knows more than he claims - arrives into town. Worse still, a new wave of resurrections could be about to occur.

After testing for the role, Kaya Scodelario has landed the female lead role in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the fifth installment in the popular Disney pirate franchise. Johnny Depp reprises his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, while Scodelario will play opposite Brenton Thwaites, cast as the new male lead in the film. Scodelario chemistry-tested with Thwaites in December and beat out the likes of Gabriella Wilde, Lucy Boynton, Jenna Thiam and Alexandra Dowling for the role, which is still unspecified. Thwaites plays Henry, a British soldier, while Javier Bardem is also on board as the [...]

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is making more headway on the casting front. Recent reports were showing five women in the running for a co-starring role in the next installment of the franchise, titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but today it looks like they've made big steps forward with regards to narrowing that playing field, and are apparently in talks with Kaya Scodelario. The Maze Runner actress Kaya Scodelario, who was of the five women already rumored for a coveted position alongside Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, has now, according to Deadline, entered the "early talks" stage with the studio. Prior to today, she was on a list with four others, including French actress Jenna Thiam (The Returned), Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter), Game of Thrones actress Alexandra Dowling, and Gabriella Wilde (Endless Love, the 2013 remake of Carrie). Scodelario hails from the UK, where she...

Disney is taking its time with the upcoming fifth installment of its massively successful Pirates series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, hopefully because the studio recognized the need to reorient the franchise after 2011’s middling On Stranger Tides. We’ve heard from Orlando Bloom that the fivequel may act as a soft reboot, and that many new actors will board the franchise in major parts. Now, we’ve learned that Disney is zeroing in on The Maze Runner actress Kaya Scodelario for the lead female role.
Scodelario, who starred on the popular British series Skins before making the lead to blockbuster fare in last fall’s dystopian Maze Runner, is in early talks for the gig, according to Deadline. No details yet on who she will play outside of that the character will serve as a love interest for recently cast Brenton Thwaites, but Scodelario seems...

Kaya Scodelairo ("The Maze Runner") is reportedly in early talks to take on the female lead role in the upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" at Disney Pictures.
Scodelairo was mentioned last month as one of five finalists for the role alongside Lucy Boynton, Alexandra Dowling, Jenna Thiam and Gabriella Wilde. Should she sign, she is expected to play the main love interest for Brenton Thwaites' character. Thwaites plays a British soldier who teams up with Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).
Hints came last month that Orlando Bloom may return as Will Turner, who took on the mantle of Davy Jones at the end of the third film. They also suggested Thwaites may play the son of Bloom and Knightley's characters.
Thwaites seemed to confirm the reports in an interview with The Mirror last week saying the film "is about a young man who wants to reconnect with his father,...

According to a new report from Comicbookmovie.com and their sources, Orlando Bloom, who starred in the first three "Pirates of The Caribbean" movies, is claiming that this 5th installment, may just be a total reboot all together, and that he's currently in talks to come back to the franchise. Orlando told the press: "I’m not entirely sure that I'll be back just yet, but there are talks. Basically, they want to reboot the whole franchise, I think, and do something with me and the relationship with my son. I’m of course Davey Jones now, so I’m down the bottom of the ocean. It might be kind of fun to do something where I’m rumbling round the bottom of the ocean, because I won’t look anything like me." Additionally, it's also reported that five young actresses are currently auditioning to play the love interest for Thwaites' character.

The fifth Pirates of the Carribbean film in Disney’s cash-cow franchise could be a reboot. The news comes from an interview IGN did with Orlando Bloom. Earlier this year the actor revealed that he has been in talks with the studio to reprise his role as Will Turner. There’s no official word on if that’s actually the case or not, but when asked about Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales he said:
“I’m not entirely sure that [I'll be back] just yet, but there are talks. Basically they want to reboot the whole franchise, I think, and do something with me and the relationship with my son… I’m of course Davey Jones now, so I’m down the bottom of the ocean. Disney is almost done casting the fifth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean. The studio is looking to cast the female lead and they've narrowed their search down to five actress including Kaya Scodelaria (Skins, The Maze Runner) and Gabriella Wilde (Endless Love, Carrie).
Also on the list are Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter, Ballet Shoes), Alexandra Dowling (Hammer of the Gods, “The Musketeers”), and Jenna Thiam (Vie sauvage, “The Returned”). The details of this role are being kept under wraps, but sources suggest that the actress who is cast will play the love interest of Brenton Thwaites, who will play a British soldier. (Especially because Disney is running chemistry tests between said actresses and Thwaites this week.)
Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Jack Sparrow, and Javier Bardem is onboard to play the villain. Although unconfirmed, there are also rumors that Orlando Bloom will return as William Turner.

The next instalment in the swashbuckling Disney franchise is hoping to lock down its newest female lead, according to a report from Variety. As we’ve come to expect from Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the powers-that-be are whittling down their choices via a shortlist which has recently surfaced.
With the fifth part of the Pirates series aiming at a summer 2017 release, the casting process is kicking things up a notch by roping in another young, fresh face to commandeer the adventures this time around. Those actresses include Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter), Gabriella Wilde (Endless Love, Carrie remake), Jenna Thiam (TV’s The Returned), Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner series) and Alexandra Dowling (The Musketeers).
The names in contention are apparently all in the running for the female role opposite the recently-cast Brenton Thwaites. Reports indicate that the studio were keen to secure Thwaites first, before...

Disney is reportedly looking to test a handful of girls over the next week for the last major role in its next instalment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.
The part will essentially be the female lead of the action-adventure, and the love interest for the British soldier to be played by young Australian hunk Brenton Thwaites.
The list includes the likes of Lucy Boynton ("Miss Potter"), Kaya Scodelario ("The Maze Runner"), Gabriella Wilde ("Endless Love"), Alexandra Dowling ("The Musketeers") and Jenna Thiam ("The Returned"). There are others as well, but those names haven't been revealed.
The studio will do chemistry tests with Thwaites and the girls to see who best fits the role, and details about the part remain decidedly vague. Astrid Berges-Frisbey played the equivalent in the last film, a captive mermaid who falls for a missionary (Sam Claflin).

The Returned has begun filming its second series.
The supernatural thriller - known as Les Revenants in its native France - started shooting earlier this week and will continue until March 20, 2015.
All of the original cast will return for eight new episodes, with actor Laurent Lucas also joining for series two.
Set six months after the conclusion of the first run, the new episodes will see Adele (Clotilde Hesme) about to give birth to Simon's (Pierre Perrier) child, while Lena (Jenna Thiam) and her father Jerome (Frederic Pierrot) search desperately for Claire (Anne Consigny) and Camille (Yara Pilartz).
Matters are complicated further when a stranger named Berg - who knows more than he claims - arrives into town. Worse still, a new wave of resurrections could be about to occur.
The show will return to Canal+ in late 2015. Channel 4 has confirmed that it will air series two in the UK,...

Satisfying the hunger of movie and television consumers in dire need of original content grows more difficult with each and every passing year. Not only do the people who produce content want to release more of the same, but the very fact of the matter is that nearly every story has already been told. What bold, creative new ideas can emerge in this early 21st century, where the quantity of the content grows exponentially at a dizzying rate? Making a television show that looks, sounds, and most importantly feels like no other is no small order. One option is to genre mash; that is, splicing two or more disparate genres together to make something that, while familiar,...

Chicago – They have already made a statement in 2013 by broadcasting Jane Campion’s brilliant “Top of the Lake” and the riveting “Rectify” but Sundance Channel goes for the hat trick, starting tonight, as they debut the French supernatural hit “The Returned,” a brilliant twist on the undead genre that places the emphasis on mood, dread, and emotion instead of the unexpected.
The subtitled program can get a bit melodramatic but it’s more often mesmerizing in its effort to capture a small town in which the past seems to have been erased. It’s like “Broadchurch” meets “The Walking Dead,” but even that doesn’t capture the unique tone and subtle accomplishments of this gem.
Television Rating: 4.5/5.0

Halloween is one of my least favorite times as a critic. I generally don’t care for horror films or TV series that scare for scariness’ sake; I’ve never really felt the desire to watch a bunch of teenagers get slaughtered for no reason in increasingly fucked up ways. Moreover, I’m laughably easy to frighten, and paranoid to boot, so a particular image or fear might give me the chills from here to eternity. True Confession: the sight of the Scream mask still gets my heart racing after all these years. That’s why I so greatly enjoyed the Sundance Channel’s The Returned; it feels like a work of horror made for people like me. Premiering on Halloween at 9 Pm and airing every Thursday night at the same time thereafter, the eight-episode import from France is more creepy than scary (think the resurrected undead, not blood and guts), and boasts considerable emotional complexity...

When is a zombie not a zombie? Do you have to be a full-fledged skull-munching, low-moaning, slow-walker to qualify? Or is being “undead” more of a philosophical problem, one that’s less about the flesh than it is about the braaain?
My coworkers and I have been debating this lately, because many of us are addicted to the French drama The Returned, one of the coolest, creepiest new shows on TV. (It premieres Halloween night on Sundance. Watch it now so you’re up to speed when Carlton Cuse of Lost adapts it for American television.) It’s nothing like The Walking Dead.
