Amid breaking news coverage of the attacks on Israel, Fremantle has decided against bringing the Australian satirical comedy C*A*U*G*H*T, which stars and is executive produced by Sean Penn, to MIPCOM for promotion and international sales amid the expanding conflict with the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.
“In light of the current situation unfolding in Israel, we have taken the decision not to showcase C*A*U*G*H*T at MIPCOM this year. At this time, our hearts and thoughts are with our colleagues and our partners in Israel, and all those affected,” a Fremantle spokesperson said on Tuesday.
The Stan original comedy follows four Australian soldiers who are sent on a secret mission to a war-torn country. Mistaken for Americans, they are captured by freedom fighters and appear in a hostage video that goes viral.

Susan Sarandon, playing the U.S. Secretary of State Alaska Adams, gets the better of Bryan Brown, as the Australian prime minister, in a fast-paced verbal duel that represents the first footage from the Sean Penn-produced satirical comedy series “C*A*U*G*H*T.”
An elite team of Aussie soldiers is sent to an island nation to retrieve a secret file that has gone astray. Mistaken for Americans, they are captured by freedom fighters and produce a hostage video that goes viral. There’s nothing quite like having an Oscar-winning actor in your corner, or perhaps a star of one of the biggest TV Series of all time. In the case of Kick Gurry, creator, producer and actor in the forthcoming Stan Original Series “Caught,” the backing of Sean Penn and Matthew Fox has undoubtedly been a boon.
After Gurry shared an early teaser of the show crafted with friends in Australia, Penn’s reaction was music to his ears. As Gurry shared with Variety, “He said everyone’s afraid of stories right now and we have to be pushing forward with courage in storytelling.”
Indeed, the courage to tell bold, new stories has resulted in an audacious six-episode satirical comedy series slated to premiere later in 2023. The series boasts a formidable cast that Gurry describes as a “murderer’s row of talent.” Among them, Sean Penn, who also serves as an executive producer,...

Anthony Hayes’ Zac Efron-starrer Gold has been snapped up by Screen Media, who has taken all North American rights.
The survival thriller was subject to a bidding war following last year’s American Film Market (AFM), out of which the Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment company came out on top.
The South Australian-shot film follows two men, travelling through remote desert, who stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found. They hatch a plan to protect and excavate the gold, which sees one leave to secure equipment while the other stays behind to protect the discovery… at all costs.
Starring alongside Efron are Hayes and Susie Porter. Hayes directed from a script he co-wrote with Polly Smyth.
Producers include John Schwarz, Michael Schwarz and Hayes, with executive producers Andrew Mann, Peter Touche, Simon Williams, Paul Wiegard, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, Nick Forward and Mike Runagall.

Zac Efron will headline the cast of Anthony Hayes’ Gold, due to kick off in South Australia this month.
Hayes will direct from his own script, co-written with Polly Smyth, and will also star with Susie Porter.
The thriller follows two drifters travelling through the outback who tumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found.
They hatch a plan to protect and excavate their bounty. One man leaves to secure the necessary equipment, while the other man remains, enduring the harsh desert climate, preying wolves and intruders, and battling the creeping doubt that he has been abandoned to his own fate.
Efron has been living in Australia during the coronavirus pandemic. Originally Sam Worthington was attached in the role.
Hayes promises Gold will be “an exciting, gripping and timely tale about greed, humanity, who we are, what we’ve done to the world and where we are heading if we aren’t careful.

‘Ride Like a Girl.’
Australian writers, producers, directors, funding agencies and distributors should ask one key question when evaluating feature film projects: Does this warrant a theatrical release or is streaming a smarter option?
That’s among the most perceptive propositions put forward by a cross-section of screen industry professionals as If sought suggestions on ways to maximise the potential of Australian films as the independent film sector continues to suffer in the cluttered theatrical market.
Some ideas proferred – such as filmmakers identifying their audience at the outset, spending more money on marketing – appear to be stating the obvious. But the fact that some execs see the need to re-emphasize these points suggests lessons have not been learned in some quarters.
The Australian features released in cinemas this year plus holdovers have grossed $37.6 million, trailing the $54.2 million collected in the same period last year, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.’
Most Australian films are caught in a catch-22: Independent distributors are constrained in how much they can spend on P&a. The upshot: Films suffer from lack of visibility and find it tough, if not impossible, to achieve their box office potential.
That’s according to Red Dune Productions’ Martin Walsh, who produced Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan with Deeper Water Films’ Michael and John Schwarz.
The Vietnam War movie starring Travis Fimmel, Luke Bracey, Richard Roxburgh, Daniel Webber, Nicholas Hamilton, Aaron Glenane and Anthony Hayes has grossed $1.75 million in 13 days on 235 screens.
Walsh has no quarrel with the distributor Transmission Films, telling If: “They have done a sterling job with the resources they have, we love working with them and they were the only distributor willing to support our film.

Anthony Hayes in ‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan’.
Anthony Hayes has been acting since he was nine. While there is no danger of him giving up that stellar career, for the present he is concentrating more on his other passions: writing and directing.
In the past five or six years he has been in the fortunate position of choosing roles he really wanted to do – in the movies Cargo, War Machine and The Light Between Oceans and TV’s Mystery Road and Seven Types of Ambiguity – rather than just for a pay cheque.
Now his primary focus is writing and directing, starting with Gold, a thriller in which he will co-star with Sam Worthington about two guys who discover the world’s biggest gold nugget in the Australian desert. After that he hopes to make Stingray, a crime thriller he wrote and was set to direct in 2016 until the financing fell through.

Anthony Hayes.
Anthony Hayes (The Boys, Animal Kingdom) will direct crime thriller Stingray, set to start shooting next year in Canada.
Hayes wrote the script and will produce with John and Michael Schwarz. He will also appear in the film alongside American actor Jon Bernthal (The Wolf of Wall Street, Sicario).
The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, describes Stingray as the story of "a young man (Bernthal) caught up in organized crime who accidentally kills the brother of a powerful crime figure. He must then kill one of his own family in the next two days to pay off his blood debt."
The project is being shopped at the American Film Market next month.
It's been a big week for Hayes, who received Screen Australia development funding only a couple of days ago for another writing-directing project: Gold follows two men who find a huge gold nugget in the desert.

Jon Bernthal is an actor that has been appearing across screens big and small since the turn of the millennium, but it was only when the actor landed the complex, scenery-chewing role of Shane in The Walking Dead that the industry began to stand up and take notice. In those intervening years, Bernthal’s career has been on the up and up, nabbing a series of supporting roles in the likes of The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, Daredevil and, more recently, Ben Affleck’s The Accountant.
We can now add Stingray to that ever-expanding résumé, as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Jon Bernthal has secured a leading role in Anthony Hayes’ crime thriller. Already in pre-production, the pic follows Bernthal’s young man as he is “caught up in organized crime who accidentally kills the brother of a powerful crime figure. He must then kill one of his...

The Jonathan Mostow-directed, Sam Worthington-led thriller "For The Dogs" has undergone a title change to "Hunter’s Prayer" and scored a financial commitment from Screen Yorkshire.
Based on Kevin Wignall's novel, Worthington plays a solitary assassin who is hired to kill a young girl but can’t bring himself to do it. After he fails to carry out the task, both are marked for death and hunted across Europe.
Their only hope is to find out why her family were killed and bring those responsible to justice. Emma Roberts and Hailee Steinfeld were both previously linked to the project but are no longer in the frame, so casting continues for the female lead.
Worthington, Navid McIlhargey, Anthony Rhulen, Chris Milburn, Paul Leyden, and John and Michael Schwarz will produce. Filming begins in the UK and Hungary next year.

Sam Worthington seems like a nice guy. I have no concrete evidence to back up that statement. I’ve never met him. If I ever do meet him, we will be talking across the heavily-mediated psychological divide that separates journalists and celebrities. Moreover, Sam Worthington is a successful actor. Normal actors are usually half-crazy. Successful actors are usually hermetically sealed paranoid demi-god therapy cases. And yet, Worthington projects a vibe that can only be described as “pleasantly neutral.” You don’t read stories about him in the tabloids. Whenever he hits the talk-show circuit, he’s amiable and self-deprecating. He...

If there's one thing I don't really cover at the annual San Diego Comic Con, it's comics oddly enough. With so many film and television-related panels going on these days, the launch of comic titles or labels themselves often get lost in the milieu of sound bites from a geek-exalted filmmaker or visiting major celeb who let slip quotes about their next project whilst helping the studio pimp out their current one.
The main reason though is that Dark Horizons is a film, and to a lesser extent a TV, DVD & Blu-ray site. Video games, technology, comics or fandom in general doesn't fall under my purview unless there is a film-related component. This year however one such opportunity presented itself - Radical Studios.

Video games, technology, comics or fandom in general doesn't fall under my purview unless there is a film-related component. This year however one such opportunity presented itself - Radical Studios.

In the past two years, Sam Worthington built a career for himself by taking starring roles in films that benefited from high-profile collaborators or familiar franchises, including "Terminator: Salvation," "Clash of the Titans," and of course, James Cameron’s longtime pet project "Avatar." But on Friday, Worthington told MTV News that he’s ready to get behind projects he has a part in creating.
Speaking at a press day for Full Clip Productions, the comic book imprint Worthington launched with his partners John Schwarz and Michael Schwarz, the actor said the increased participation only fuels his creativity.
“We come from a cottage industry whether we’re making graphic novels in Australia or short films or major movies,” he told MTV News. “You’re basically coming in from the get-go, and what that does is it gives you a bigger investment. We’re not in here as guns for hire...

The rise of Sam Worthington has been curtailed a little bit. After being up for every single character from Dracula to Dan Dare, his name has disappeared from weekly casting reports and rumors. I could insert some snarky "maybe he wasn't the next action star" comment here, but that just seems mean, especially since he's now a go to star for Radical Comics. According to THR's Heat Vision, Worthington has formed a new production shingle called Full Clip Productions, and is teaming up with Radical to develop comics and graphic novels that could be sent straight to the screen. Worthington and one of his Full Clip partners, John Schwarz, will basically have first pick of any juicy starring roles.
Their first project with Radical is called Damages. John and Michael Schwarz came up with the story -- "two brothers are committed to justice in different ways" -- and tapped David...

Sam Worthington (Avatar, Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans) apparently wasn’t busy enough with all of his future projects, from Quatermain and Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future to the proposed Avatar 2 (among others) so, he started his own production company called Full Clip Productions.
THR is reporting that Full Clip is teaming with comic house, Radical Publishing “on an imprint deal to create and develop intellectual property that would be published with an eye towards screen adaptations.” We told you recently that Radical had also partnered with Imagine Entertainment to develop their dark fairy tale, Legends, and they are also developing Oblivion with Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.
The relationship between Worthington and Radical is nothing new, we reported back in November that Worthington had been working with Radical on the big-screen adaptation of The Last Days of American Crime and that relationship has obviously grown.

Radical Publishing and Full Clip Productions report they have entered into an 'imprint' deal, with Full Clip, a company headed by actor Sam Worthington ("Avatar") and his partners Michael Schwarz/John Schwarz, to develop intellectual property, to be produced under the Radical banner.
Worthington and John Schwarz will also star in the film adaptations of select projects.
The first project in development under the imprint is "Damaged", created by John and Michael Schwarz, written by Eisner Award winner David Lapham, following two brothers committed to justice in different ways – one inside the law, one outside of it.
"...Now, with the end of their careers approaching, they must train their replacements, hoping to remake each in their image. But the vigilante code has changed and the brothers are left unprepared for the true lawlessness and corruption that is about to be unleashed..."
