Writer/Director: Robin Hardy. Cast: Brittania Nicol, Henry Garrett, Christopher Lee and Graham McTavish. Sometimes, the classics should be left alone and allowed to age gracefully. In the case of The Wicker Tree, the die-hards of the original The Wicker Man, expecting a modern take, will be disappointed. Ignoring the Nicolas Cage travesty, this re-imaging of the folk horror tale can be looked at in a different perspective as an analogy of how some missionaries from yesteryears may have been treated when they went out to preach the word of God to the new world. That is, if converting cultures to a new belief system is considered a crime, the angels in Heaven should be weeping. Free Will is about personal choice, and the horror should come in dealing what results from it. For Adam and Eve, they lost paradise and a direct line to God when they ate from the apple.

The Wicker Tree, Robin Hardy’s long awaited “sequel” to the cult film The Wicker Man, is a mildly interesting experiment, but sadly not much more. Beth Boothby (Brittania Nicol) and her boyfriend Steve (Henry Garrett) are a couple of Christian missionaries from the U.S. who are sent to Scotland to spread the gospel in the small, isolated village of Tressock.
If you have seen The Wicker Man, you know this can’t go well. And honestly, even if you haven’t seen the first film, you can still predict the chain of non-events that make up this film. Beth and Steve are as American as Apple Pie, and that’s part of the problem. Sure, there is the clash of religious beliefs from the Evangelical Christians butting up against the Neo Pagans in Scotland, but it’s too broadly comic and on the nose to be effective. The...

In 1973 Robin Hardy made a little film called “The Wicker Man”, which became a bonafied piece cult horror. A few years ago “The Wicker Man” was remade (remember Nicolas Cage yelling about “The Bees!”). For whatever reason, maybe to cash in, maybe because the remake left a bad taste in his mouth, Hardy made “The Wicker Tree”. Neither a sequel nor a remake of his original film, “Tree” is intended as a thematic companion to “Man”, and ultimately part of a planned “Wicker” trilogy. “The Wicker Tree” is now out on Blu-ray and DVD, and I’m going to go ahead and say, whatever his motivations, Hardy should have left well enough alone and not bothered. Based on “Cowboys for Christ”, a 2006 novel Hardy wrote, “The Wicker Tree” is about Beth Boothby (Brittania Nicol), a evangelical country singer and reformed bad girl, who goes to Scotland to preach the Word...

Exclusive Interview: Writer/Director Robin Hardy on The Wicker Tree, Completing his Trilogy and More
It has been almost forty years now since writer/director Robin Hardy first mystified audiences with his uber-eccentric cult classic The Wicker Man, and now the UK filmmaker is back with his companion tale, the darkly comedic The Wicker Tree.
Starring newcomers Brittania Nicol and Henry Garrett as well Graham McTavish and Christopher Lee, The Wicker Tree is centered around two young missionaries who travel to a small village in Scotland where they hope to spread the gospel of Jesus; unaware of any sinister plans, the pair get caught in the middle of a ritual which will force them both to make the 'ultimate sacrifice' in the end.
Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with Hardy about his follow-up efforts on The Wicker Tree as well as why this latest film isn't really a sequel and why his third film in the Wicker trilogy may end up being...

.There.s power in the blood.. Robin Hardy.s return to the world of wicker has been long anticipated by fans. It.s been a project on the burner for a long time. Such anticipation can only result in disappointment although there are still touches of that original brilliance. Beth Boothby (Brittania Nicol) used to be a sleazy pop diva until she found Jesus (which she.d most likely pronounce Geeeee-sus). She.s now a Texas evangelical who has come to the wilds of Scotland to preach to the heathens there with her boyfriend Steve (Henry Garrett). They have to be in love since they.re wearing promise rings and are saving their lust for their wedding night. The duo have been invited...

If Neil Labute and Nicolas Cage’s 2006 remake of The Wicker Man only reinforced the greatness of the 1973 original, director Robin Hardy’s sequel to his horror classic has the opposite effect. Strangely inept and less frightening than a PG-13 Screen Gems teen genre tale, it causes one to wonder if maybe their memories of the original The Wicker Man are fuzzy.
Based on his book Cowboys for Christ, writer-director Hardy’s story begins in Dallas. Beth Boothby (Brittania Nicol) is a Taylor Swift-like pop/country music star. Only she is even more wholesome. Along with her boyfriend Steve (Henry Garrett), Beth is going to travel to that den of hedonism we know as Scotland. The devout couple (they are saving themselves for marriage) will spend two years spreading the word of Jesus.
Of course, viewers know that Beth and Steve are doomed as soon as they set foot in Scotland.

Fans of British writer/director Robin Hardy’s 1973 film The Wicker Man will likely be nonplussed by his newest effort The Wicker Tree. Neither a sequel to nor a remake of the first film – and completely unrelated to the laughably awful Neil Labute version from 2006 – The Wicker Tree tries to follow Hardy’s earlier work in spirit, but it completely loses the thread early on.
American Brittania Nicol makes her acting debut as Beth Boothby, a born-again Christian pop singer who takes her boyfriend Steve (British newcomer Henry Garrett) with her on a mission to convert souls in Scotland. They find themselves in a small village which has a strange attachment to the old Celtic gods. This is the same basic structure as the 1973 film – devout Christian runs up against mysterious pagans – but the older film had Edward Woodward...

The Wicker Tree starts its limited theatrical release today and we have a new clip featuring Christopher Lee. While he only has a cameo due to an injury, Christopher Lee was originally set to star in the film. You can learn more about that in our recent interview with director Robin Hardy.
The Wicker Tree is considered a spiritual sequel or companion piece to The Wicker Man, which Robin Hardy directed in 1973: “In The Wicker Tree, two young missionaries from Texas (Brittania Nicol, Henry Garrett) head to Scotland to educate the Scottish heathens in the way of Christ. They are initially charmed by the locals in the town of Tressock and agree to become the local Queen of the May and Laddie for the annual town festival. The Wicker Tree
Written by Robin Hardy
Directed by Robin Hardy
UK, 2011
Made nearly 40 years ago, Robin Hardy’s The Wicker Man has become so engrained in the public imagination that spiritual and religious beliefs have actually sprung from his creation. There is nothing redundant in his revisiting of the small Scottish community of Summerisle, and his “sequel” engages and challenges aesthetic and thematic choices of the original film. Much as Werner Herzog creates a dialogue through pastiche and excess between original and remake in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Hardy employs similar techniques in his 21st century revisiting of religion, sex and oppression in adapting his novel Cowboys for Christ.
For those familiar with The Wicker Man, it is immediately evident that our two “innocent” youths on a missionary quest will meet a dire end. They represent the complicated image of modern purity, conflicted by the desire...

If you thought the nearly 30-year gap between Tron and its sequel, Tron: Legacy, was something of a stretch, try this on for size: writer-director Robin Hardy's new movie, The Wicker Tree, is the sequel to his 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man (no, not the boring 2006 version starring Nicolas Cage) and even includes original cast member Sir Christopher Lee. Take that, Jeff Bridges! [Okay, truthfully, The Wicker Tree isn't so much a "sequel to" as it is a "re-imagining of" The Wicker Man, but given the fact that Hardy has only directed one other feature in the 38 years since the original movie scared the socks off of moviegoers, we'll give it the win against Tron: Legacy.]
Originally slated for a theatrical release in 2010, The Wicker Tree missed its intended opening, but screened at a couple film festivals last year — a reviewer who saw the movie at the 2011 Fantasia International Film Festival in Montréal called it "horrific and blasphemous to those who saw the original film as an act of iconic horror and blasphemy" but "something worthy of conversation." Anchor Bay picked up U.S. distribution rights to The Wicker Tree and, to help promote its release in select theaters on January 27th,...

Director Robin Hardy burst in to the international film world in 1973 with the release of The Wicker Man, the cult title still widely considered to be one of the greatest British genre films ever made. Hardy's career has followed an unusual path since, his directing credits post-Wicker Man limited to just 1986 feature The Fantasist and some work on 1989 television series E Street. But now Hardy is back, and returning to the ground that made him famous in the first place with The Wicker Tree. When two young missionaries (Brittania Nicol, Henry Garrett) head to Scotland, they are initially charmed by their engaging baron Sir Lachlan Morrison (Graham McTavish) and agree to become the local Queen of the May and Laddie for the annual...

Set to be a far-fetched sequel to the classic 1973 film, The Wicker Man, The Wicker Tree is about two missionaries sent from the church to change the pagan ways of the young women in the village of Tresscott. It will be released on Anchor Bay Entertainment and set for a limited theatrical run on January 27th 2012 followed by and immediate DVD/Blu-Ray release.

News, news! ShockTilYouDrop has gotten their hands on the official one-sheet for the ‘spiritual sequel’ to Robin Hardy’s 1973 horror classic, The Wicker Man. The film which is said to not be a sequel or remake, but treading along the same themes and concepts, is a companion piece to the original The Wicker Man. Check out the creepy poster below:
The film is based largely on Hardy’s 2006 novel Cowboys For Christ, which focuses on Texas pop star turned gospel singer, Beth (Brittania Nicol) and her cowboy boyfriend, Steve (Henry Garrett), both devout evangelical Christians from the church Cowboys for Christ, sent on a mission to spread the word of God to the people of Scotland. The film also includes Jacqueline Leonard, Honeysuckle Weeks, Clive Russell and most notably Lord Summerisle himself, Christopher Lee. (Though it is unknown if Lee will be returning as Summerisle or a different role altogether.
