It’s not just about those repeats of A Christmas Story on TNT anymore.
Multiple linear channels and streamers are getting into the holiday spirit this month and next by dropping original Christmas movies, as well as old favorites and one-off holiday specials. As usual, Hallmark has wall-to-wall flicks planned until the end of the month, but Great American Family, Lifetime and BET have their own original slates as well to help ring in the new year.
And if the classics are all that you are looking for, there are still airings of It’s a Wonderful Life, Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Home Alone, The Santa Cause, The Wizard of Oz and Miracle on 34th Street scheduled for the boomers and Gen Xers.
And yes, on the big days, several channels have do have marathon programming events.
Check it all out below.

The Breach, not to be confused with Breach, is the second feature from Rue Morgue founding editor Rodrigo Gudiño (The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh). Co-written by Nick Cutter and Ian Weir based on Cutter’s novel, its mix of haunted house and mad scientist themes attracted a lot of pre-release buzz which I was hoping it would live up to.
John Hawkins has one week left as sheriff of Lone Crow. Then he can put the town, and his ex Meg, behind him and start a new job in the city. That, of course, means something terrible has to happen before he can leave. And it does when a canoe bearing the mutilated remains of theoretical physicist Cole Parsons washes up at a local park.

The Guns N’ Roses guitarist co-produces this retro chiller that serves up a corpse, alternate dimensions and an implausible plot
Slash from Guns N’ Roses is one of the producers of this throwback low-budget Canadian horror – and he makes his presence felt on the opening credits with a track that is the cinematic equivalent of playing a screeching guitar solo outside your Glastonbury tent at 6am. Subtle it is not. But possibly spot on for a movie that feels like a blast of 80s nostalgia, paying homage to the era’s nastily effective cheap scary movies.
It begins like a Stephen King novel, in the sleepy town of Lone Crow, where a badly mutilated body drifts in on a canoe. “Where’d the bones go?” marvels sheriff John Hawkins (Allan Hawco), who is days away from a promotion and upping sticks to the big smoke. A driving licence identifies the corpse as Dr Cole Parsons,...

"They are opening the gates to hell here!" Trinity Creative Partnership and Raven Banner have revealed an official US trailer for an indie horror creation called The Breach, adapted from the novel by Nick Cutter. This premiered at Fantasia, FrightFest, Night Visions, and the Monsters of Film Horror Film Festivals last year - with a VOD release coming up soon this summer. Counting down his last days as Chief of Police in the tiny town of Lone Crow, John Hawkins must investigate one last case when a mangled body with uncanny wounds washes up on the shores of the Porcupine River. Described as "gory, cosmic horror" it's made by the founder of Rue Morgue Magazine, Rodrigo Gudiño, directing his second feature. Featuring music by Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash (who's also an executive producer), the film stars Allan Hawco, Emily Alatalo, Natalie Brown, Mary Antonini, Wesley French, Adam Kenneth Wilson,...

JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols already got to see Rue Morgue Magazine founder Rodrigo Gudiño’s film The Breach a year ago, but the film still doesn’t have a release date in the US. A marriage of police procedural and Lovecraftian horror, Rodrigo Gudiño and Ian Weir’s take on Nick Cutter’s popular genre novel is treading familiar territory for the Fantasia international Film Festival but manages to acquit itself with some distinction thanks to the groundedness and specificity of its approach. It begins when a spectacularly mangled body floats down the Porcupine river in a canoe, and ends in a place which is predictable yet nonetheless retains its sinister quality.
Allan Hawco plays police chief John Hawkins, who is just one week away from moving down south to take up a new job – the very worst time to happen upon a case like this. “This is Jake’s kind of case,” says an officer at the scene of the discovery, referring to Jacob Redgrave (Wesley French). As the jealous former boyfriend of Meg (Emily Alatalo), the woman whom John is on the verge of.

In Spare Parts, Andrew Thomas Hunt’s second directorial effort, an emerging all-female punk rock band from Canada – called Ms .45 – is touring the United States. Not long after one of their seedy bar gigs turns into a brawl, the four young women end up living a nightmare. The main scenario of the movie is a scrapyard, where the unthinkable happens. Women and men are subjected to a crazy surgery, their limbs are replaced with weapons such as an ax, a chainsaw or a flamethrower. Eventually, they become modern gladiators, under the yoke of the so-called Emperor (Julian Richings), his son (Jason Rouse) and other followers who want to please the gods with the spilling of blood....

Their performance impresses an enthusiastic fan who lures the girls into a trap, sedates them, and starts… customizing them. "What if I choose death instead?!" "You're not ready to die, so fight for your life." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for a crazy body horror punk rock film called Spare Parts, now set for release in June this summer. Made by Canadian filmmaker Andrew T. It's described as "if Sushi Typhoon's Machine Girl gets a make-over with the staging props of Mad Max." We featured the teaser trailer for this last year,...

Punk Rock Gladiators. As far as genre movie set-ups go, few three-word combos could muster the same levels of excitement as Andrew Thomas Hunt’s Mad Max-inspired junkyard battle royale. Even with just those words, you can feel Spare Parts as the fun-loving, hyper-violent crowd movie it desperately wants to be; the sort of Rollerball-esque anti-sports, anti-underdog movie that rockets through the midnight circuit. So it’s a bit of a crying shame that a great deal of those lofty ambitions end up falling foul to a limbless script, and a budget that just won’t stretch far enough to deliver the goods.
Run off the road in the middle of a backwards desert town, all-female four-piece Ms. 45 find themselves prisoners in the middle of a literal trash-heap, and at the mercy of a decidedly backwards emperor (a slightly under-hammed Julian Richings). After a quick spot of junkyard...

The Scarehouse is a solid contained horror film mixed with found footage when away from the main location. Production values are good and performances are commendable when it comes to the “why are you doing this to me?” scenes. Most impressive of all is Jennifer Miller (as sorority sister – Lisa Jenning). She can certainly throw a punch or two and proves to be an ongoing thorn in the side of our anti-heroes Corey and Elaina.
The movie opens up with handheld footage of a group of loud-mouthed, college sorority sisters dressed in their underwear getting ready for a night of initiation with their two newbies. None of these people prove themselves to be likeable.

Halloween is my favourite time of year, and so while we don’t normally post trailers for short films (sorry but there is only so much time in a day), I couldn’t resist passing up the opportunity to promote the latest short from Canadian filmmaker Marc Roussel. According to Twitch, Roussel is putting the final buff and polish on his latest film, but so far it is looking spectacular. The film follows four young trick-or-treaters who set out on a door-to-door adventure during what seems to be a post-apocalyptic setting. Adapted from the comic by Mark Thibodeau, The Last Halloween stars Ron Basch, Emily Alatalo, Julian Richings, Angela Besharah, Brendan Heard, Drew Davis, Jake Goodman, Zoe Fraser, Kritty Uranowski, Adrian Griffiths, Alastair Forbes, and Ali Adatia. Watch the teaser below. Enjoy!

I am sure at one point or another in our lives, we’ve wanted to step back into the past and re-live a certain time because the present just isn’t that great. That is kind of the theme here for Neverlost, a film about the pains of the present, the thrill of the past and what you’ll go through to get back there.
This is more of a drama/fantasy piece, it isn’t exactly horror by traditional means but there are a few elements. The insomnia aspect is certainly something that falls into the genre, for anyone who has suffered it, you’d know the living nightmare it can be. I have been there many times, it is a horror in itself and it is played out here showing its horrific nature. The Machinist this isn’t, although I am sure writer...

Cast: Emily Alatalo, Lionel Boodlal and Colin Paradine.
If there is ever a movie that requires viewers to keep a bottle of Advil nearby, Dead Genesis is it. The problem is with all the headache inducing camera-shaking going on. Has anyone in the production team heard of a tripod?
Shaky-cam is a style that some movie and television shows can pull off only when it adds to the drama. Sometimes, the jarring movement is soft and natural, and other times, it is like standing still while an earthquake is happening. But when such a movie is done with no thought towards keeping the camera steady at all, sometimes a vomit bag is required!
But when the principal cinematographer was replaced after a day, based on the triva written for this film on the IMDb, writer/director Reese Eveneshen was very bold to continue on and take on the job himself.

Reese Eveneshen is the director behind the recent zombie horror opus, Dead Genesis starring Emily Alatalo, Lionel Boodlal, Colin Paradine, Erin Stuart. This enterprising young filmmaker showed that with his debut feature film, that he was a competent filmmaker ready to take on a challenging sub-genre. Dead Genesis was technically sound, respectablly executed and it looked far better then other similarly low budget zombie fare on the market. Dead Genesis took on subject matter such as zombies as a metaphor on the war on terror, sexual relations between the undead and the living and statements on the human condition. We had the chance to ask Reese Eveneshen a few questions about his film. Here's what Reese had to say.

Dead Genesis PosterDead Genesis is a zombie flavoured film, which has been flying under the radar for some time now. The film has had a premiere back in April and now the film has a new promotional poster, which shows some of the characters for the film. The film's one-sheet shows a war between the living and the dead, but how easy would fighting shamblers, or slow moving zombies really be?
In the trailer below for the film, the age-old, Romero inspired zombies are used, which could only really capture a seventy year old woman and not anyone who could move faster than 2-3 km an hour. This argument has been made before. However, using shamblers to take over the land of the living is, simply, unbelievable. Take inspiration from Danny Boyle in 28 Days Later, or even Romero's later zombies in the Land of Dead who have intelligence and attack en masse for realism.

This is the sixth film review in the coverage of Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival. While film festivals try to raise awareness on budding directors, it doesn't mean that you'll like all the films you'll see. This goes without saying that I personally didn't like Chad Archibald's Neverlost. However, I'm sure Archibald does have some potential as a director.

Fantasia Neverlost PosterFantasia is hosting an assortment of horror cinema goodies and many of them are Canadian born and bred features e.g. The Shrine, The Necronomicon and director Chad Archibald's Neverlost. Neverlost's first screening on July 20th has already been sold out, but a second showing on the 22nd is still available for fans of psychological terror. The film really sells itself, as a depressed scriptwriter escapes into fantasy in order to distort the reality of a forthcoming divorce. More goods are rolling in from the Fantasia Film Festival 2010, this time in the form of some new stills and a pretty damned cool one-sheet for the flick Neverlost.
Fantasia Description
One of the most tightly scripted and boldly designed Canadian genre films since Vincenzo Natali’s Cube (1997), Neverlost follows the psychic meltdown of sleep-deprived, depressive, thirty-something failed scriptwriter Josh Higgins, spiraling into matrimonial hell with his embittered wife of two years, Megan. The young couple struggle to co-exist in a poisoned climate of frayed nerves, resentment and incommunicability. Think the couple in last year’s Fantasia presentation Combat Shock (Buddy Giovinazzo, 1986), minus the monster baby, and with a little less apartment squalour.
