Amazon has cancelled Z: The Beginning Of Everything, starring Christina Ricci, after the series had previously been greenlit for a season 2.
The initial renewal was a bit of surprise, given the lack of buzz around the first season of the Zelda Fitzgerald series, but it's even more of a surprise when considering that the Z writers' room had already started meeting for season 2 and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a reported $7 million had already been spent on a second season.
As the THR article notes, the renewal came shortly after the publishing of a Vox article on the apparent "sexist loophole" in Amazon Studios straight-to-series practices, while the subsequent cancellation comes in the wake of Amazon's rumoured decision to scale back its spending on original series heading into...

We have two clips to share with you from Alto, which describes itself as "a NYC mafia flavored lesbian rom com." That really says it all, doesn't it? If not, the official synopsis should do the trick: "Frankie (Diana DeGarmo, American Idol) is as headstrong about her rock band, The Altos, as she is about her Italian-American heritage. Engaged to a good Italian man, everything in her life is in order until she discovers a corpse in the trunk of her rental car, possibly due to a mob hit. Heather, her sister, convinces Frankie to attend the funeral where they meet Nicolette (Natalie Knepp), the daughter of the new Brooklyn mafia don. Between Into The Woods and now The Last 5 Years, 2015 is shaping up to be The Year Anna Kendrick Sings. And like Woods, there’s more than just fairy-tale romance to be found in the latter, as this trailer reveals. The Last 5 Years, adapted from Jason Robert Brown’s stage musical by Richard Lagravenese, is the story of the love affair between struggling actress Cathy Hiatt (Kendrick) and up and coming novelist Jamie Wellerstein (Jeremy Jordan). This one takes an intriguing narrative track with its story and its songs – Jamie’s view runs from their initial encounters through to the end of their marriage, while Cathy’s is in reverse, spinning back the clock from unhappy endings to ebullient beginning, meeting briefly in the middle on their wedding day. It’ll be interesting to see how the show’s concept works on screen: one assumes you can explore more...

With a filmography that includes Up In The Air, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and End of Watch, actress Anna Kendrick has been seen in a number of genres over the past few years. One of her more notable entries was 2012′s Pitch Perfect, which saw her make a foray into musicals, which she followed up with by signing on to the movie adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into The Woods. However, Kendrick will also be seen in The Last 5 Years, an adaptation of the stage musical that follows a couple over the course of their five-year affair. Kendrick takes on the role of Cathy Hyatt in the film, co-starring alongside Betsy Wolfe, who played the role in a 2013 stage revival of the musical, as well as Jeremy Jordan and Natalie Knepp. The film is written and directed by Richard Lagravenese, and made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Horatio (David Caruso), Ryan (Jonathan Togo) and Walter (Omar Miller) rush to a call out at a Cs where two people have been shot. The car of one of the Vic's crashes into a fire hydrant, so they must race against time to preserve whatever evidence they can, before it's washed away and destroyed. Horatio tries to stop the hydrant gushing out water and Ryan attends to the male Vic, as Walter covers the car, in desperation. Ryan notices the gun on the ground and shouts to Walter, who can't hear him. Why didn't Ryan just go for the gun when he saw it. As he makes a dash for the gun, it's swept into the storm drain. Ryan is angry he lost the gun. It went down the drain. Horatio: "It went down the drain." Not a very catchy or witty one liner from him. Come on writers you need to do better.

A report about fight gone out of control has called our attention to a new horror film now in production. It's called Darkroom and it is directed by Britt Napier; this is her feature debut. Kaylee DeFer of Gossip Girl plays a woman named Michelle who takes a job recommended by her counselor. The gig lands her trapped in a mansion with three psychotic siblings hell bent on purging Michelle of her sins. Elisabeth Röhm ( Angel ) co-stars with Christian Campbell, Britne Oldford, Natalie Knepp, Steven Stanulis and Tobias Segal. As for that aforementioned fight, it apparently occurred between DeFer and Stanulis. Not a big deal.

Babelgum announced today it has secured exclusive rights to distribute season 1 of Old Friends, which is now up in its entirety, and that production is wrapping up on season 2 which will be released on the site in January 11. We've been following the work of New York comedy standouts Nick Ross and Tim Curcio for a while now, even before their popular comedy series hit the web earlier this year. Ross had starred in 2008's Park Bench series, which stood out for its sharp witted simplicity—"two lusty yet oblivious dudes whiling away the summer on a Central Park bench," according to our reviewer. The 7-episode first season of Old Friends, tells the story of Tim and Nick, two 28 year-olds who are reunited after not seeing each other since high school. There's a classic comedic tension setup, with a little love tangle going on. Tim is now married to his high school sweetheart,...
