One of the most surprising upsets of the Golden Globes on Tuesday night was Argentina, 1985 winning the best non-English language feature honor, beating out the bookies’ favorites, including Netflix’s German war drama All Quiet on the Western Front, Indian box office smash RRR and Cannes festival winners Close and Decision to Leave.
The win of a Golden Globe puts increased awards focus on Santiago Mitre’s historic legal drama, which follows the story of the real-life prosecutors who put Argentine’s military on trial for the crimes of state terrorism committed during the country’s bloody dictatorship.
Argentina, 1985 now looks like a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination in the best international feature category, though its Globes rivals — and critical favorites, including Ireland’s The Quiet Girl, Jerzy Skolimowski’s Polish drama Eo and Ali Abbasi’s newly-relevant Iranian feature Holy Spider — will provide stiff competition. But, following the Globes win,...

More than 85 films have been submitted to the Oscar race for Best International Film, the new name for what until now has been known as the Best Foreign-Language Film category.
Other films may have been submitted by their home countries without being publicly announced. The deadline for submissions was Oct. 1, and the Academy will announce the full list of qualifying films a few days after that deadline, after vetting all entries to make sure they qualify.
Typically, a handful of films that weren’t announced by their home countries end up on the list, and often one or two that were announced are disqualified by the Academy. With 16 countries that submitted films last year or in 2017 yet to announce, the number of submissions this year has already reached last year’s total of 87, and could conceivably approach the 2017 record of 92.

Argentina’s film academy has submitted Sebastián Borensztein’s Heroic Losers (La Odisea De Los Giles) to the 2020 International Feature Film Oscar category.
The film is based on a novel by Eduardo Sacheri, who also penned the book that was adapted into Juan José Campanella’s 2009 Oscar-winning Argentinian drama The Secret In Their Eyes.
Heroic Losers stars prolific Argentinian actor Ricardo Darin (also of The Secret In Their Eyes fame) alongside his son Chino Darin in a story set in a dying town in Buenos Aires. The pic follows a group of men stung by a financial scam who set out to rob the perpetrator. It was produced by Darin’s own banner Kenya Films with Argentina’s K&s Films and Spain’s Mod Producciones.

“We’re not thieves,” insists the ringleader of a heist in “Heroic Losers,” a South American crowd-pleaser about a rural collective seeking justice against big-city banking elites. He may be wrong in the most literal sense, but like an Argentinean Danny Ocean, he’s assembled a group of amateurs who have no intention of filling their coffers with ill-gotten gains — they just want their money back. Adding to a tradition of modest heist comedies like “Going in Style” and “Big Deal on Madonna Street,” . That populist touch has put it on track to be the year’s biggest box-office hit in its home country, and other territories will surely pounce after its international premiere in Toronto.
Anchoring this motley ensemble is Ricardo Darín, the durable star of Borensztein’s previous two films, “Chinese Take-Out” and “Kóblic,” though international audiences will likely remember him from “Nine Queens,” which also placed him...

Variety has been given access to an exclusive clip and poster from Toronto Special Presentation “La Odisea de los Giles” (“Heroic Losers”) which, starring Ricardo Darín, has just scored in is native Argentina a standout opening weekend of Peso 58.8 million ($1.1 million) and 316,300 admissions for Warner Bros. Pictures.
With “Heroic Losers” having released on Thursday Aug. 15, that four-day first weekend bow is two-to-three times better than any other national title of the year, putting “Heroic Losers” well on track to become the highest-grossing Argentine movie of 2019 in Argentina.
The news would be if the film hadn’t made that kind of box office. It has been released in prime mid-August box office real-estate, when local audiences now expect a big Argentine movie.
Rarely, moreover, has an Argentine movie weighed in with such a pedigree package. A feel-good revenge heist comedy-thriller, studded with tragedy which gives the film momentary harder edges, “Heroic Losers” features the star,...

The Secret In Their Eyes is a tightly-plotted murder-revenge thriller that unfolds in leisurely, satisfying detail, cramming a whole miniseries’ worth of events into its two-hour running time. A remake of the 2009 Oscar-winning Argentinian film of the same name (from a novel by Eduardo Sacheri), The Secret In Their Eyes is an old-fashioned movie-movie with an A-list cast that’s hardly groundbreaking, but engrossing and substantial enough to recommend
Jumping back and forth between 2002 and current day, The Secret In Their Eyes makes its way through several genres; equal parts murder mystery, adult romance, buddy cop movie, and a discourse on national security and the death penalty. The plot hinges on the murder of the teenage daughter of a federal investigator and a co-worker’s 13 year quest to find justice. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Ray, a La-based G-man in 2002 on post-9/11 counter-terrorism duty, assigned to investigate chatter at local mosques.

Secret in Their Eyes
Written and Directed by Billy Ray
Based on the film El Secreto de Sus Ojos by Juan Jose Campanella and Eduardo Sacheri
USA, 2015
Thrillers that contain no thrills aren’t exactly a rarity in Hollywood. It comes as no surprise, then, that Secret in Their Eyes fails to quicken a pulse. More surprising is its complete inability to establish tone, mood, or any sense of escalating tension. Everyone, including writer-director Billy Ray and leading man Chiwetel Ejiofor, does acceptable work, but there’s just no pop here. The bar was simply set too high with Campanella’s 2009 Oscar Winner, making this tepid remake feel both ill-advised and ill-conceived.
“Passion always wins,” is an ironic mantra for Secret in Their Eyes considering what a dispassionate film it truly is. Perhaps a more accurate theme would be, “The past determines the present.” Every character seems doomed to travel...

That's the undertaking screenwriter and director Billy Ray took on for his "Secret in Their Eyes," a new version of Juan Jose Campanella's "El secreto de sus ojos," which won the 2009 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (that film was inspired from another source, too, as Campanella worked alongside novelist Eduardo Sacheri to retrofit Sacheri's novel for the big screen). Fans of the original — and there are many, including Ray — will recognize plenty of elements in Ray's new film, although his Chiwetel Ejiofor and Julia Roberts-starring feature has...

Drawing the basics of your script from a novel that has already been adapted overseas to Oscar-winning effect can be a daunting challenge. But it’s one that Shattered Glass writer/director Billy Ray has taken on with Secret In Their Eyes, bringing Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts along with him. The first trailer has now arrived.Taken from Eduardo Sacheri’s novel La Pregunta De Sus Ojos, this new film is attempting to follow Juan José Campanella’s 2009 Argentinian effort The Secret In Their Eyes, which went home with the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 2010 Oscars. Along with knocking off that initial “The”, Ray tweaked the plot to add in more of a female presence in the lead when Roberts expressed her interest. The story follows similar lines, with Roberts and Ejiofor as FBI colleagues called to investigate a body found brutally murdered and left in a dumpster.

The remake train continues to churn along in Hollywood and this time, the powers that be are taking on the 2009 Spanish thriller The Secret in Their Eyes which, upon its theatrical release in North America, made a big splash raking in a nice chunk of change and landing the movie on IMDb's top 250. All of this to say that the original is not some festival favourite few have seen.
The remake is being toted as more of a fresh take on Eduardo Sacheri's novel (which was also the basis for the first movie) about a team of FBI investigators whose lives are turned upside down they're called to a murder scene and discover the body of a teenage girl who happens to be the daughter of one of the investigators.

Loving the new look, Julia Roberts! The actress debuted a different 'do while on the set of her new film The Secret in Their Eyes, and although we're a fan of her brunette and banged tresses, it's also very possible that Roberts is rocking a wig for the movie (but at least now we know that if she did decide to switch it up, this is a good alternative to her already-lovely locks). Julia also got a sweet visit from her hubby Daniel Moder, who stopped by the set in Pasadena, Calif., to hang out with his ladylove while she took a break from shooting. Billy Ray's remake of the 2009 Academy Award winner for foreign-language (directed by Juan Jose Campanella) is based on the Eduardo Sacheri novel...

Check out this fun trailer for the CG animated feature film called Metegol or Foosball in English. The film comes from Academy award winner Juan J. Campanella (The Secret in Their Eyes and episodes of House and 30 Rock). The story is built around the great sport of Foosball! I used to play Foosball all the time, but the sport just got too intense and crazy for me, so I had to give it up for the greater good. Or maybe the Foosball table broke and I just never bothered to fix it or get a new one.
The movie may not be a Pixar or DreamWorks Animation film, but it still looks entertaining. Here's the synopsis:
Metegol, also known as Foosball and Futbolín (Spanish Title), is an upcoming 3D CG animated film directed by Academy award winner Juan J. Campanella (Juan José Campanella) of “The Secret in Their Eyes” (El secreto de sus ojos...

Despite not having a cutting edge 3D animations like Pixar, Juan Jose Campanella has done a pretty good job.
Following his Oscar-winning drama The Secret In Their Eyes, the helmer decided to venture into animation. And after a first rough edit of teaser nearly a year ago, a much more polished look popped up.
Based on a short story called ‘Memoirs of a Right Winger’ by Argentine writer Roberto Fontanarrosa the 3D animated film follows Amadeo, a shy but talented boy, and a foosball trying to get back together after having been dismantled. With the help of the foosball players, Amadeo takes on the most terrible football rival: the Champ.
Metegol, also known as Foosball and Futbolín is expected to hit international theaters sometime this year.

This Oscar-winning Argentinian thriller packs emotional punch and a dazzlingly virtuosic narrative
There is usually, and often with justification, serious criticism of the movie voted by the American Film Academy to receive its Oscar for best film in a foreign language. It happened again this year when the international critics' anointed contenders – Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon and Jacques Audiard's A Prophet – were ignored in favour of Juan José Campanella's The Secret in Their Eyes. Well, Haneke's picture is certainly more original and Audiard's altogether harsher, but Campanella's Argentinian thriller is a film of subtlety, distinction and depth that in most other years would have made it appear a very worthy recipient. Moreover, it seems an apt choice to mark what Sight & Sound celebrates on the front page of its September edition as "The Rise and Rise of Latin American Cinema" over the past decade.

The Secret in Their Eyes
Starring Ricardo Darin, Soledad Villamil, and Pablo Rago
Directed by Juan José Campanella
Rated R
Upon his retirement, Esposito (Ricardo Darin) is still haunted by a brutal murder he investigated 25 years ago, and an unspoken love with his old superior that has lasted just as long haunts him even more. To occupy his time, the former detective attempts to reconcile the two major events of his life in a novel.
Before long, his instincts take over and he’s back on the case. As a fellow investigator once told him, a man can change just about anything – his home, his religion, his family – but the one thing he can’t change is his passion.
The murder of beautiful Liliana Coloto is one of his passions. It seemed like an open and shut case, but casting a net over the accused killer proved impossible. For a year following the murder,...

The Argentinean thriller, The Secret In Their Eyes, is a story of unresolved love set against the mystery of an unresolved murder. The surprise winner of this year.s Oscar for Best Foreign Language film is a handsome if conventional film that makes its leisurely way through several genres; equal parts murder mystery, adult romance, buddy cop movie, and political discourse. Writer/Director Juan José Campanella lets his story slowly unfold in satisfying detail resulting in a film that is engrossing, intense, and in one extended shot, exhilarating. The Secret In Their Eyes is less about a murder case and more about the living left behind, and is a highly recommended drama.

The surprise winner of this year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar, “The Secret in Their Eyes” revolves around Benjamin Esposito (Ricardo Darín), a middle-aged retiree who is obsessed with solving the 1974 murder of a young women which slipped through his fingers. His exploits bring him in contact with his old boss, Irene Menéndez-Hastings (Soledad Villamil). Adapted from Eduardo Sacheri’s novel, the film was directed by Juan José Campanella, a veteran such TV shows as “House” and “Law & Order: Svu.” Here’s a sampling of critical reviews.
“If you were diagramming the script, which the director and Eduardo Sacheri adapted from Mr. Sacheri’s novel, you might divide it between these two elements, an unsolved murder and unresolved love. No movie in memory, though, is less schematic. Elements intertwine. Feelings emerge, recede, resurface. Wit and humor—and remnants of hope—sustain lives burdened with regret.
