Exclusive: The Outsider, starring Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo, has been put into turnaround after HBO opted not to proceed with a second season. MRC, the studio behind the drama series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, is taking Season 2 out to market.
The pitch, originally presented to HBO, includes a script and bible for a continuation of the story beyond King’s book, which was the source material for Season 1. Series writer/executive producer Richard Price crafted the Season 2 storyline with King’s blessing, sources said. Centered on Erivo’s Holly character, it expands King’s universe, exploring the human, naturalistic and inexplicable with a sustained pervasive dread you can’t put your finger on.

Writer-showrunner Liz Sarnoff (Lost) has signed an overall deal with Universal Cable Productions.
Sarnoff, who has been switching between drama and comedy, is currently writing for the second season of HBO’s comedy series Barry. For her work on the first season of the breakout hit, Sarnoff received an Emmy nomination for writing the ‘Loud, Fast, and Keep Going.’ episode. She also is expected to share in Barry‘s best comedy series nomination.
Sarnoff recently created and executive produced the TNT pilot Highland starring Margaret Cho and directed by Nisha Ganatra. I hear the project is currently being shopped by Tomorrow Studios and has been getting interest, with Ucp poised to come on board as co-producer if it’s picked up.
Sarnoff rose through the ranks on HBO’s Deadwood and ABC’s Lost, sharing in best drama series Emmy nominations for both shows. She went on to co-create Bad...

Mr. Robot executive producer Kyle Bradstreet has been tapped to write and executive produce Alice Isn’t Dead, a TV series based on the podcast and upcoming novel by Joseph Fink, which is in development at USA Network and Universal Cable Productions. The gig falls under Bradstreet’s overall deal at Ucp, which acquired the rights to the podcast last summer.
Created by Fink and published by Night Vale Presents, Alice Isn’t Dead the podcast follows Keisha as she traverses the country as a truck driver, searching for her wife Alice, whom she had long assumed was dead. As the miles pile up, so do the mysteries. Because hidden in America’s seemingly-innocuous corners, lie supernatural dangers all pointing back to Alice.
A novel based on the series written by Fink is slated to be released in the fall by Harper Perennial.
