Chicago – I’ll admit that based on the ubiquitous trailers, The latest attempt for Jennifer Lopez to reclaim the throne as Queen of the Rom-Com seemed like the sort of enterprise meant to make you bury your face in your hands. So I was pleasantly surprised to find “Marry Me” is just innocuously bad, not egregiously bad.
.. and with the state of rom-coms these days that’s something of an accomplishment.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Jennifer Lopez essentially plays Jennifer Lopez here as global pop star Kat Valdez. She has a messy personal life and a string of failed marriages and is about to say “I Do” again with fellow popstar Bastian (Columbian pop star Maluma) in front of an audience of millions. When a video of him cheating sends her into a complete meltdown, her eyes fall upon a face in the crowd and she exchanges vows then and there with a...

While it may not be the pinnacle of achievement in the romantic comedy genre, the new film – Marry Me – starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson, proves to be a delightfully entertaining piece that surprises in how likable a film it turns out to be.
Lopez plays Kat Valdez, a character much like her real-world personage in that she is seemingly everywhere all the time. Kat is betrothed to Bastian (Maluma), a music superstar in the making himself. They currently have a single dedicated to their romance, “Marry Me,” climbing the charts as they prepare to hold the actual ceremony as part of a concert before Kat’s adoring fans. Just before the big moment however, Kat discovers evidence of Bastian’s infidelity and, as she stands before the crowd, shocked by her discovery, she spots high-school math teacher Charlie Gilbert (Wilson) in the crowd with his daughter Lou (Chloe Coleman...

That Jennifer Lopez is playing a thinly veiled version of herself in Kat Coiro’s mostly amiable “Marry Me” is part of the rom-com’s appeal. Here is a film focused on a wildly popular recording artist (check) who still feels somehow out of the loop (check) and who has been very publicly married many times (check) and is eager to practice a little self-reinvention (check). Lopez’s onscreen avatar, Kat Valdez, is just as appealing as Lopez herself, somehow managing to feel approachable while also being a megawatt star. You’d like to be friends with Kat, even if that seems somewhat impossible. Now imagine how that feels to good-natured math teacher Charlie (Owen Wilson), who kind of wants to be married to her.
Pulling liberally from other rom-com gems like “Notting Hill” and “Maid in Manhattan,” “Marry Me” is rife with the kind of tropes audiences expect (and desire!

Jennifer Lopez knows a thing or three about media harassment and being in the public eye 24/7, but that only makes the far-fetched romantic comedy Marry Me seem even less tolerable or redeemable than it might have looked on paper. In its opening minutes, this slickly made, music-drenched concoction serves up a premise so massively implausible — that one of the hottest female singers on the planet would replace her cheating macho fiancé in front of a live TV audience with an ineffectual single dad math teacher in his 50s — that it can never recover. It is, in two words, perfectly preposterous.
Lopez, whose last feature was the far more provocative Hustlers three years ago, plays Kat Valdez, a not unconvincing version of the star herself; she’s a sizzling entertainer at the peak of her powers whose half-her-age singer-partner Bastian (Colombian musician Maluma) has the bright idea to get it on...

It’s not often a web comic gets optioned into a film produced by a superstar singer for a Hollywood studio, but that’s what happened to Bobby Crosby’s 2012 work Marry Me. Screenwriters John Rogers, Tami Sagher, and Harper Dill polish the “don’t all arranged marriages work” sentiment and pee-your-pants excitement comedic edges from the spontaneous and conflict-fueled meet-cute of 20-somethings to the existential crises of two fifty-somethings who, lost in life, are willing to take a leap of faith. The switch does wonders for palatability and marketability, charismatic performances from Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson pushing things over the finish line under director Kat Coiro’s stewardship. Her Kat Valdez is struggling to find love in the midst of fantasy; his Charlie Gilbert wasn’t even looking.

Exclusive: Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who turned the Gossip Girl YA books into a hit series for the CW (and now HBO Max), are bringing another popular YA book series to the screen at the broadcast network. The CW is developing Sweet Valley, a TV series based on the Sweet Valley High books by Francine Pascal. The bestselling novels were previously adapted into the 1994 series Sweet Valley High, which aired in syndication before moving to one of the CW’s predecessors, Upn, for its fourth and final season.
The latest project is a co-production between new ViacomCBS corporate siblings CBS Studios and Paramount TV Studios in what is believed to be the first time the Paramount vault has been mined by the CW.

“Marry Me,” a musical romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez, will debut on Peacock on Feb. 11, 2022, the same day as its theatrical release.
The Universal Pictures film was intended to premiere exclusively on the big screen, but the studio opted to shake up its release plan at a time when dramas and comedies — and basically any movie that isn’t part of a major film franchise — have struggled to sell tickets in theaters.
Over the weekend, Steven Spielberg’s well-reviewed musical “West Side Story” fell short of box office expectations, continuing a discouraging pandemic-era trend for adult-centric titles, including Will Smith’s sports drama “King Richard,” Kristen Stewart’s royal fantasy biopic “Spencer” and Ridley Scott’s star-studded historical epic “The Last Duel.” As for Universal, its recent teen musical “Dear Evan Hansen” failed to connect with audiences while playing exclusively on the big screen.

In another move to feed the beast of frosh streamers, Universal has announced that their Jennifer Lopez-Owen Wilson romantic comedy Marry Me will stream on Peacock the same weekend the movie hits theaters, Feb. 11-13.
Previous theatrical-day-and-date Peacock releases include DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby: Family Business ($57.3M domestic) and Blumhouse/Miramax’s Halloween Kills. The latter film didn’t seem to be eroded that much by its Peacock release posting a healthy $49.4M domestic opening and a $92M final tally stateside.
Marry Me, directed by Kat Coiro, follows a musical superstar, played by Lopez, who is about to be proposed to by her fellow music supernova (Maluma in his feature film debut) before a global audience of fans. However, she learns that he’s been unfaithful and decides to marry Charlie (Wilson), a stranger in the crowd instead.

Universal Pictures has released a trailer for Jennifer Lopez’s “Marry Me,” heading to theaters on February 11, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
The romantic comedy follows Lopez as Kat, a music superstar, who marries a complete stranger (Owen Wilson) during a concert after she finds out that her boyfriend Bastian (played by musician Maluma) is cheating on her. The trailer also shows the pair seemingly falling in love — although the arrangement is only supposed to last for three months. The cast also includes Sarah Silverman, Jameela Jamil and Jimmy Fallon.
In a teaser that Lopez shared with fans on Instagram Monday, the actress is singing a track called “On My Way” with a caption reading, “Every heartbreak was a yellow brick road.” Two other songs from the film are titled, “Pa’ Ti” and “Lonely,” which Lopez and Maluma recorded together for the movie’s soundtrack.

“Marry Me,” Universal’s romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Latin pop star Maluma, has been bumped again, this time all the way to Valentine’s Day 2022.
“Marry Me” will now open on February 11, 2022, pushed back from its most recent release date on May 14, 2021. It will take the place of an untitled Universal event film on the calendar. The movie was originally meant to open this weekend in time for Valentine’s Day 2021 but was delayed until the summer after the studio dropped a teaser trailer.
The studio has also slated an untitled Blumhouse horror film for release on January 28, 2022.
Universal had already moved the spy film “The 355” to January of 2022, the action movie starring Jessica Chastain and Lupita Nyong’o that was meant to open early this year. And “Marry Me” will now open on the same date as Sony’s “Uncharted” with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.

While it’s not necessarily a sign of things to come, it is an instance of a studio moving a theatrical release not just out of Q4 of 2020 but even out of the first quarter of next year as well. The pic features originals songs by Lopez and Maluma. Lopez stars as musical superstar Kat Valdez and Owen Wilson as Charlie Gilbert, a math teacher—total strangers who agree to marry and then get to know each other. John Bradley also stars.
John Rogers (TNT’s The Librarians) and Tami Sagher (NBC’s 30 Rock) and Harper Dill (Fox’s The Mick) wrote the screenplay based on the graphic novel by Bobby Crosby.

Comedian Michelle Buteau is joining Jennifer Lopez in her new comedy “Marry Me.”
Owen Wilson, Sarah Silverman and “Game of Thrones” actor John Bradley are also on board to star in the Universal film. Kat Coiro is directing the movie from a script by John Rogers and Tami Sagher, with a rewrite by Harper Dill.
Universal recently acquired “Marry Me” from Stx after the studio, in turn, nabbed the film from Universal in April. The studio plans to begin shooting in the fall.
The musical-comedy is based on the graphic novel by Bobby Crosby, and is described as a cross between “Notting Hill” and “A Star Is Born.” The pic explores the possibilities of what might happen when a superstar marries an average Joe as a joke and discovers that perhaps there are no accidents.
Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina will produce alongside Rogers. Willie Mercer, Alex Brown and J.B. Roberts will executive produce.

Exclusive: Stx Entertainment creative executive Catherine Hagedorn has been named Head of Development for Jennifer Lopez and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ Nuyorican Productions. The appointment follows the duo’s collaboration with Hagedorn on the upcoming Stx/Nuyorican feature Hustlers, starring Lopez.

The Jennifer Lopez-Owen Wilson romantic comedy “Marry Me” has moved from STX back to its original home, Universal Pictures.
Stx previously took over the project in April. Kat Coiro is directing from a script written by John Rogers and Tami Sagher, with a rewrite by Harper Dill. Colombian singer/rapper Maluma has joined the cast and will play the fiance to Lopez’s pop star character.
The movie is based on a graphic novel by Bobby Crosby and centers on a pop star (Lopez) who, moments before marrying her rockstar fiance at Madison Square Garden, finds out that he cheated on her with her assistant. She breaks down on stage and picks a random man — a math teacher played by Wilson — out of the crowd to marry instead.
Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina will produce alongside Rogers. Executive producers are Willie Mercer, Alex Brown and J.B Roberts.

For those who aren’t fans of Masters of Sex and/or Lizzy Caplan, Friend of Bill might be a film that doesn’t quite rocket to the top of the “Must See” list, but there’s much to recommend here.
If nothing else, the fact that this is the same production collaboration that brought you Welcome to Me should be enough to get people to pay attention. That film, an Indie gem starring Kristen Wiig, was on my list of the year’s best, and this one looks just as interesting.
While not quite as offbeat in its premise as Welcome to Me, Friend of Bill has Lizzy Caplan playing a writer who is arrested for public intoxication, and forced to take a sabbatical. This leads to her return to her small hometown, where she has to deal with her mother, and two suitors while she struggles with sobriety.

In a shocking turn of casting events, Variety reports that strolling troubadour and star of The Love Guru, Justin Timberlake, is in talks to star in a new film that would see the former boy band balladeer playing kind of a jerk. Heavens! The outlet reports that Timberlake is looking to star in Peter Sollett‘s (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) The Last Drop, which would see him as “a charming alcoholic who works as a restaurant critic for New York Magazine” who decides to clean up his wicked ways in order to win the love of a good woman. We will now take bets as to just how irrepressibly awful and jerky Timberlake’s character will be before he gets off the sauce. The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

For the seventh annual year a list of the top unproduced screenplays written in the past 12 calendar months has been made. The Black List is the most recognized and celebritized compilation for screenwriters and unknown movie ideas to be heard. While some prior Black List scripts have gone on to be made (like Juno or 500 Days of Summer), most scripts do not. However, what being on The Black List can do is to give a big push of credibility to a screenwriter hoping to carve out a career in Hollywood.
The Black List recepients are chosen by a committee of 300 individuals working in Hollywood: agents, writers, producers, managers and the like. They read the screenplays that float around the showbiz ecosystem; some are bought and are already in development while others are still seeing the interest of talent of financial backers.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. It should be noted that the headline is somewhat misleading -- some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though according to Leonard none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

This year at the Austin Film Festival, studio executive and “Black List” founder Franklin Leonard introduced the opening film, Butter. It’s a fantastic satirical comedy written by Jason Micallef and Leonard’s post-screening Q&A with him was equally hilarious and unconventional.
Sitting in the upper deck at the Paramount Theatre, I was in awe at how Leonard had not only created the list just six years prior but how it provided such legitimacy to emerging screenwriters, like Micallef. He was relatively unknown in ‘08, but his script placed third on the list. Now he has a movie coming out starring Jennifer Garner, his new scripts have Jack Black and Jason Segel attached (separately), and he wrote a movie titled Good Vibrations about, um, marital aids starring Charlize Theron. That’s the power of the Black List.
Simply put, “The Black List” is a collection of the best unproduced screenplays...
