Ryan Gosling issued a statement about Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie being snubbed in two key Oscar categories on Tuesday.
The actor had some strong words following Gerwig missing out on a best director Oscar nomination, and Robbie not being nominated for best actress. Gosling was nominated for a best supporting Oscar (along with his co-star America Ferrera), leading many to strongly criticize the nominations as snubbing the blockbuster film’s two biggest creatives.
“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films,” the actor began. “And I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.”
The actor continued: “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie,...

There are always Oscar snubs. But this one is striking the media as particularly egregious: Greta Gerwig wasn’t nominated for best director for Barbie — a film that was not only the biggest hit of the year and helped to bring moviegoers back to cinema with the success of “Barbenheimer,” but was also nominated for best picture and, by any measure, was a very tricky project to pull off. In addition, Barbie star Margot Robbie was snubbed for best actress, while Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera were nominated for supporting.
People have thoughts.
“Both Gerwig and Robbie ignored … it’s still so easy for Hollywood to overlook and discount artistic contributions of women — Even When Its The Point Of The Year’S Biggest Movie!” wrote MSNBC host Jennifer Palmieri. “My God. It was nominated for best picture. Didn’t direct itself, friends!”

Spoiler Alert: This article includes details of Sunday’s series finale of Showtime’s docuseries The Circus.
Showtime’s The Circus launched eight years ago with a title that suggested politics infused with a bit of crazy spectacle, but it ended tonight with anxiety, angst and even a sense of dread for what’s ahead.
The docuseries wrapped up after an eventful week: Donald Trump testifying in his civil trial, off-year elections that saw some unexpected Democratic wins and a Republican debate that may ultimately prove to be irrelevant.
But what stood out in the episode were a series of interviews from figures across the political spectrum, which has refracted quite a bit since The Circus debuted. The finale reflected the precarious state of politics, driven largely by the rise and endurance of Donald Trump and the reaction against him and his movement.

Hosted by John Heilemann, Mark McKinnon, and Jennifer Palmieri, the four-time Emmy nominated political docuseries offered viewers a deeper look at the nation’s biggest political stories inside the beltway from Donald Trump’s unexpected presidential victory and his contentious time in office, to the polarizing politics of the pandemic, the 2020 election and ensuing insurrection on Capitol Hill, as well as Biden’s presidency at a time of international turmoil.
“When we started ‘The Circus’ in 2016, we thought it would be a one-and-done deal. Eight seasons and 130 episodes later, we’re still agog that Showtime gave us the trust and support that kept us cranking on this long, strange trip — and let us prove that our idea of doing a weekly,...

The Circus, the Showtime docuseries that presented the chaotic world of politics in a weekly narrative, is ending its run after eight seasons and 130 episodes.
The show, with regular host correspondents are Mark McKinnon, John Heilemann and Jennifer Palmieri, will have its final episode on Sunday on Paramount+ with Showtime and Showtime linear.
Showtime decided not to renew the series amid changes at the premium network. One of the big champions of the show, David Nevins, departed last year.
The Circus is ending just on the cusp of the 2024 presidential cycle, in what might be a fight-to-the-finish rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the latter of whom is likely to spend the better part of the year in court facing criminal charges.
The show’s hosts haven’t foreclosed the possibility of continuing on another platform, but they gave credit to Showtime for embracing the idea for The Circus and staying with it.

Ted Cruz was roasted to oblivion on social media on Thursday, after a “bizarre and cringe” Newsmax interview in which he suddenly started chugging a beer. But the mockery continued on Friday morning, as the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” couldn’t stop laughing at his “bad acting.”
In this particular segment, the Texas senator railed against a hypothetical new federal alcohol guideline that would recommend people only have two drinks per week. Standing with a group of men in cowboy and trucker hats, Cruz pulled a beer from off-screen, told the Newsmax host that Biden can “kiss my ass” – and then drank in unison with the men behind him.
“It’s just, the acting is so bad,” host Willie Geist said through laughter on Friday morning. “That’s where the director calls cut, and steps in and says, ‘Ok, that was a great first take. What we’re...

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has reportedly been voted out of the ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus, but apparently, she’s been dodging calls from the caucus chairman to set a meeting to officially get her pink slip. To the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” that felt like a move a certain “Seinfeld” character would try to pull.
The vote to dismiss Greene came at the end of June, reportedly after a very public fight with fellow congresswoman Lauren Boebert on the House floor. According to NBC News, a caucus board member says efforts have been made to get a meeting with Greene, but they suspect it’s “a little bit like someone refusing service from a legal standpoint … if I’m not served, then maybe it doesn’t take effect.”

The hosts and panelists of “Morning Joe” added their voices to the chorus criticizing the launch of Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign, after the announcement via Twitter Spaces was plagued by glitches on Wednesday night.
On Thursday morning’s episode of the MSNBC talk show, the hosts and panelists pretty much agreed unanimously that DeSantis’ launch went as poorly as it could go, after starting 20 minutes late because Twitter’s servers purportedly couldn’t handle the volume of people tuning in to listen (which former Twitter CEO Elon Musk and DeSantis’ camp have been spinning as a good thing).
“I mean, it was an abomination,” former White House Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri said bluntly. “And just so much hubris all around, from DeSantis, from Musk — by the way, 700,000 people is not that much. Like, Twitter should be able to handle 700,000 people.”

A bevy of big media players are eager to win a growing battle to provide consumers with streaming news, but John Heilemann has a message for them: Don’t count out smaller competitors.
Heilemann’s “The Recount,” a media outlet founded with entrepreneur John Battelle in 2019, is hiring its first chief content officer in a bid to gain new traction with streaming-news aficionados eager for smarter analysis in critical news categories like politics and sports. Ryan Kadro, the former executive producer of “CBS This Morning” and, more recently, head of news programming for the short-form video service Quibi, is taking on the role and will oversee day -to-day editorial production at “The Recount,” which features programming from Heilemann, Jennifer Palmieri and Reena Ninan, among others.
“Ryan has unique experience,” with history in traditional TV news as well as a recent entrepreneurial venture with Quibi, says Heilemann, in a recent interview.

“Give Me Liberty” isn’t the easiest film to describe in one sentence. But its producer, Alice Austen, and lead actress, Lolo Spencer, knew it was exactly the kind of film that needed to be told — even when studios and financiers wouldn’t support them.
“We were told that we were unmarketable, undistributable, unreleasable,” Austen said at TheWrap’s Power Women Sf event on Monday evening, quoting detractors who said “Give Me Liberty” would never make it to Sundance or Cannes.
The film follows a disability transport driver in Milwaukee who, accompanied by a group of octogenarian Russian immigrants, must pick up a young woman in a wheelchair on the other side of town amidst protests in the city. “Give Me Liberty” eventually went on to premiere at Sundance and was unanimously chosen to participate in Cannes.

The promo for Chicago Med Season 3 Episode 16 may not have been as misleading as others we've seen, but it did bury the lede. Connor and Ava getting into spats is nothing new or exciting, but Will and Nat ending things? There's some drama!
Even from a medical stand point, there were more exciting cases. Both the complicated ethics of Nat and Daniel's case and Sharon's guilt ridden godson were more compelling than a lost instrument.
While the location (and size!) of the lost instrument was concerning, I thought it was kind of a flimsy premise for the conflict it created. It's alarming to think about, but retained surgical instruments are not exactly uncommon.
Really, the scrub nurse who didn't notice the bullet sized piece missing from the suction tube should be the one reprimanded.
I guess it let us see more of Ava's "human" side, but it was a pretty contrived way of doing so.
