I’m not sure what year this was that the USC marching band decided to pay tribute to Guardians of the Galaxy, but it could have been the same year the movie came out. It’s impressive to watch, especially since knowing that the kind of training and discipline that goes into this act has to be on the spot and nearly perfect to get it right. Marching bands are known to be highly entertaining but also demanding since the higher up one goes, from high school to college, the demands that are made are going to be so much more. It

As those that were following our Twitter feed and recent features are aware, I was at the Stanley Film Festival last week and it was easily one of the best horror events I've attended. While it's something that you have to experience for yourself, I wanted to give readers details on some of the highlights, including my favorite screenings, Stuart Gordon receiving the Master of Horror award, a Cooties-inspired eating contest, a "marching band from hell," and an immersive horror game that us working together to stop a cult.

Reelz is paying tribute to the King of Pop by compiling some of our favorite Mj tributes from the interwebs. While there are plenty of world-renowned talents like Patti Labelle and Jennifer Hudson who pay tribute to Jackson by performing incredible covers of his songs, those aren't the memorials we focused on. After all, what we love most about the world wide web is getting to see the strange and surprising talents of regular Joes. So in anticipation of Reelz' evening devoted to the King of Pop, we picked out our five favorite Michael Jackson tributes created by extremely talented, non-famous people.

March is about to get mad.
Beginning tonight, sports fans (and a lot of non-sports fans) will spend most waking hours pouring over brackets and RPIs, trying to figure out who will be the next Davidson or Lehigh, and watching more TruTV over 3 weeks than they will rest of the year combined.
Espn is smartly capitalizing on the momentum of March Madness by debuting its latest 30 for 30 documentary on Sunday at 9 p.m. Est, following its annual Bracketology special. For the uninitiated, the 30 for 30 docs series began in late 2009. Its mission: shine a light on incredible, real-life sports stories that might not have received the coverage they deserved (or have faded with time for whatever reason). Requiem for the Big East—Sunday’s special—is the 60th feature-length 30 for 30 documentary. It promises to be a lovely, bittersweet ode to a brand of college basketball lost to realignment and the changing...

They’re known the world over as “The Best Damn Band in the Land,” and the Ohio State Marching Band proved they deserve the title with their halftime show over the weekend.
Taking the field at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, the Marching Buckeyes wowed the crowd with flawless formations and pitch perfect music taken from blockbuster film soundtracks.
Among the movies represented were “Superman,” “Harry Potter,” “Jurassic Park,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” all of which they pulled off without a sour note or misstep.
And while halftime is traditionally the time the crowd hits the concession stand and restrooms, many spectators opted to stay in their seats for the rousing performance.

The 17-date tour is the veteran British rockers' biggest in six years and follows a handful of dates in London, Paris and New York at the end of 2012 marking 50 years since they burst on to the music scene at London's Marquee Club in 1962.
"We first played La in 1965. Thank you for coming to see us. We really appreciate it," frontman Mick Jagger said late on Friday during the show at Staples Center.

If you happen to follow TV critics and insiders on social media, you might have observed many of them writing some variation of "Tusk!" or "Omg Tusk!" over the past week. And following the premiere of The Americans on FX last night, you now know why — the opening minutes of the show were set to the tension-ratcheting drums and horns of the 1979 Fleetwood Mac song. And it's in your head now. So why try to fight it?The original employed the orchestration of the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band. This is what they look like performing it: Of course, the band couldn't bring an entire marching band on tour with them, so instead, they had band member Christine McVie play the horns' part on the accordion: Then again, in 1997, when they recorded their live album The Dance, Fleetwood Mac said, "Why the hell not?" and brought...

Son of Rogue's Gallery, a compilation of songs from the seafaring tradition, will feature a grizzled crew including Keith Richards, Michael Stipe, Nick Cave and Shane MacGowan
Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Tom Waits and the Pogues' Shane MacGowan are among the contributors to a new compilation of pirate ballads. The grizzled, A-list crew was assembled by Johnny Depp, who performs on the album, and the people behind the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
First, some more names. Among the hearties who are shivering timbers on Son of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys: Tom Waits with Keith Richards, Michael Stipe with Courtney Love, Nick Cave, Broken Social Scene, Marianne Faithful with the McGarrigle sisters, Sissy Bounce with Akron/Family, Beth Orton, Macy Gray and Sean Lennon.
The two-disc set, due next year, is the sequel to a compilation from 2006. There too, Pirates producer Hal Willner manned the tiller.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade isn’t the type of parade that gives out awards to the best floats, what with nearly all the floats being the same every year. So EW’s here to make sure that the highlights of this year’s parade all get their due accolades. Here are the moments from this year’s kickoff to Turkey Day that were deserving of recognition, for better or worse.

Perhaps you’ve heard of a song called “Gangnam Style.” It’s by some Korean dude who calls himself Psy and it’s got, like, a trillion views on YouTube. No? Well, take my word for it, it’s popular. And as with most things that are popular – Snuggies, pretty girls, singing competition reality shows – it’s inspired all sorts of imitators. Now before you rush to the nearest tablet or mobile device and hunt these down for yourself, be warned: not all of the imitations are good. In fact some of them are quite bad. So, with that in mind,...

Deadline is reporting that Fox plans on developing an hour-long comedy action series based on the Bad Company shooters.
The project is being set up under Alias's John Eisendrath as writer, Sony TV, and Adam Sandler's Happy Madison studio. It will follow four soldiers who return to civilian life only to learn that their Co tricked them into carrying out dirty ops on behalf of a shadowy organization. Sounds like shades of The A-Team, and with Happy Madison on board, it's likely that it'll never take itself too seriously.
I'm not very familiar with the fiction in the games, but to those of you reading out there, do you feel like it would translate well as a weekly, hour-long action series?

Gamers who attended the Ohio State vs Nebraska football game over the weekend got a pleasant surprise during halftime. To much applause, the university's marching band took to the field and delivered what is probably the most impressive video game-themed halftime show ever witnessed, and you can watch it all go down after the break!
Several iconic video games were featured during the all-brass tribute, including Super Mario, Tetris, Pokemon, Zelda and Halo. However, the most impressive synchronized display put on by the Osu Marching Band has to be when, in unison, the entire band aligned and created what looks like Link's horse running across the field. Just watch the video and see for yourself:
Isn't that amazing?! The NFL should really take this performance into consideration for their future halftime shows. I don't know about you, but I'm really getting tired of watching Super Bowl halftime shows that pull...

Michelle Obama had some inspirational words for U.S. Olympians on Friday (July 27) ahead of the opening of the London games.
"I'm so inspired by you and am in awe of what you all have achieved ... Try to have fun; try to breathe a little," she says.
The first lady held court on the lawn of stately Winfield House, transforming the London landmark into an enormous playground from which she preached the message of her campaign for healthier living. Currently home to the U.S. Ambassador, Winfield House is a mansion set on 12 acres of grounds in Regent's Park and the second-largest private garden in London behind only Buckingham Palace.
"You know, you are not born an Olympian,'' Obama says, addressing the crowd alongside current and former athletes including Brandi Chastain, Grant Hill, Carl Lewis, Shawn Johnson, Teresa Edwards, Dikembe Mutombo and Dana Torres. "Many of them started out just like you.

"Beyond proud" is how Michelle Obama told U.S. Olympians she felt while meeting with them on Friday morning, as the world awaits the evening's opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Over breakfast at an east London sports center with some of Team USA - including women's basketball players, fencing competitors and members of the track and field squad - the First Lady praised the inspiration they provide to those watching back home. "Some of my fondest memories growing up and as an adult involve watching the Olympics on TV," Mrs. Obama told them. "My family would sit together for...

Having been around for eighteen years, the Chicago Underground Film Festival has continually changed what it defines as “underground.”
So its 19th annual edition, which will be held on May 31 to June 7 at the Gene Siskel Film Center, feels like its most experimental edition in recent years.
While things kick off on the 31st with the Vice-produced anthology film The Fourth Dimension by Alexsei Fedorchenko, Harmony Korine and Jan Kwiecinski, the rest of the fest is packed with feature-length and short experimental work, documentaries and alternative narratives.
Some of the experimental feature highlights include the vastly prolific Robert Todd‘s Master Plan, which examines theories of modern housing from private residences to prisons; Australia’s two-person art collective Soda_Jerk’s epic rip on media piracy, Hollywood Burn; Michael Kosakowski’s compendium on murder fantasies, Zero Killing; L.A. filmmaker Daniel Martinico’s meditation on the acting process, Ok, Good...

Every once and a while, a new sample library comes along for us composers that changes everything, or is significant in its contribution to our arsenal of tools at our disposal. In this SCOREcast product review, we chose to take a look at the new Sample Logic Ni Kontakt-based library Fanfare in an attempt to discover if this was one of those libraries.
I have a pretty extensive background with the marching band / drum corps idiom, and my principal instrument is the trumpet, so imagine my excitement when Sample Logic announced the “Definitive Marching Brass Library” in Fanfare. There are not many libraries out there are for marching brass, and certainly none with the pedigree of the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps brass behind it—the only other one being… well… a bit antiquated at this point.
So…before I began exploring Fanfare, I went to Sample Logic’s...

To celebrate the release of Skyward Sword, we take a look at why, The Legend of Zelda could be the greatest series in gaming history. From Skyward Sword all the way back to the very beginning!
1. Good Vs. Evil
“Light and Dark are two sides of the same coin. One cannot live without the other”
Each of the Zelda games follows a very traditional story line. Some may say over used, but there’s no doubt that this formula has worked for countless films, games and books.
The rise of a hero who must rescue the princess from the clutches of an evil villain, that threatens to destroy the land/world/universe.
This is the bare bones of fantastic story telling and has been used by the most popular movies in pop culture.
Zelda has Link, Zelda and Ganondorf
Star Wars has Luke, Leah and Darth Vader.

Aladdin, which opened in January 2003, has been a staple of California Adventure, providing elaborate sets, classic music and fun special effects in a 50-minute “spectacular.” With a cast of around two-dozen individuals,...

Next to turkey, mashed potatoes, football and unpleasant relatives, there's no Thanksgiving tradition more venerable than the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The annual parade cuts through Manhattan first thing on Thanksgiving morning delivering a run of musical acts, performances from Broadway musicals, marching bands, floats and of course giant balloons representing all sorts of pop culture characters.
This year's parade seems to have an extra dash of A-list action, as the performer list includes Kanye West (who will be performing the melancholy My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy track "Lost in the World" during the show), Keri Hilson, Kylie Minogue, Jessica Simpson, India Arie, Big Time Rush, Gladys Knight and a host of others. Those of you tuning in to watch the parade will also catch performances from eclectic groups like the NYPD Marching Band, the Seminole Warhawk Marching Band, the Spirit of American Dance and something called the Stepper-ettes.

The holiday season just isn't officially underway until the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (I don't care how early the stores think it starts), and what better entrance to the Thanksgiving holiday than a couple of Christmas specials? Well, it doesn't all have to make perfect sense.
Tonight, NBC is leading you into the holidays with Merry Madagascar and a Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special, and I have some previews of those for you below. Tomorrow, you obviously don't want to miss the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and though I don't think it needs any hype at this point, I have some cool videos for that as well. Finally, NBC's take on Thanksgiving night festivities is Taylor Swift's special Speak Now.
To be completely honest, the holiday season may not make as much sense as it used to, what with malls decked out in tinsel and trimmings before Halloween, but...

To hear Marching Band is to hear songs that could launch a thousand brands. The Swedish duo make upbeat, indie-pop-loving soft-rock tunes that could be as easily in a commercial for chocolate bars as it could be in a hipster bar. While that may sound like a back-handed compliment, it's more a testament to their likeable, short, harmonics and riff-heavy tunes, which are in abundance on their second full-length "Pop Cylce." The set, due next Tuesday (May 18) is out via indie publisher Urband & Lazar, who successfully got the band into movies ("Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist") on radio (Kcrw)...

Brooklyn, New York — It's been seven years since Jay-z announced he was bringing the New Jersey Nets back home to New York during his 2003 "Fade To Black Concert" at Madison Square Garden. On Thursday (March 11), Nets co-owner Hov, an assortment of New York politicians and executives from the Nets came to Brooklyn for a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the team's future home, the Barclays Center.
The Brooklyn Steppers Marching Band led the way into the press conference, which took place at Brooklyn's Atlantic Yards. Jay walked in with Beyoncé, standing out in a crowd that included the Reverend Al Sharpton, New York Governor David Paterson and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Plenty of jokes flew as each person came to the podium.
