David Dastmalchian may have played his part in Marvel, DC, and everything in between, but it is his latest horror flick – Late Night With the Devil – that has scratched an old itch concerning the ballooning budget of the Cbm industry. The character actor, who has dipped his toes in numerous creative pools, has finally discovered a way for comic book films and television adaptations to retract their claws from sticking too far down Hollywood’s deep pockets.

One of my favorite experiences at last year's Overlook Film Festival was witnessing a screening of Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes' Late Night with the Devil. A film that will transfix you from its very first frame to the moment its eerie end credits roll, Late Night with the Devil is a must-see movie bolstered by a powerful performance from the always-great David Dastmalchian.
If you missed Late Night with the Devil on the festival circuit, you'll be able to see it soon when it comes to theaters on March 22nd, followed by a streaming release on Shudder beginning April 19th, and a new teaser trailer offers a ghoulish glimpse into the film's depiction of a late-night talk show that takes a demonic turn one fateful (and frightful) Halloween in 1977.

IFC Films and Shudder have snatched up rights to hot AFM horror title Late Night with the Devil, taking the film for North America, U.K. and Ireland in a deal with Cinetic Media.
IFC said it plans to release the film exclusively in theaters, with a later streaming window on Shudder.
Directed by Australian filmmaking brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign), Late Night With the Devil evokes the spirit and style of 1970s horror classics like The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby. It tells the story of the charismatic but ratings-challenged late night talk show host Jack Delroy (Suicide Squad star David Dastmalchian), who stages a demon-evoking seance on live TV and unexpectedly unleashes evil into the nation’s living rooms.

Up next from Australian writing-directing team Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign) is found footage horror Late Night With the Devil, with David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad) starring as the host of a late-night talk show that descends into a nightmare. Variety reports that it’s been nabbed for release by IFC and Shudder.
Dastmalchian stars as Jack Delroy, the charismatic host of “Night Owls,” and the film traces the ill-fated taping of a live Halloween special plagued by a demonic presence.
No release date has been announced just yet, but we can expect a theatrical release followed by a Shudder streaming debut soon.
The film premiered earlier this year at SXSW. I wrote in my review out of the fest, “Late Night with the Devil captures the chaotic energy of a late night show, embracing the irreverent comedy and stress of live television with a pastiche style.

The 2004 album “1989” was a pivotal moment in Taylor Swift‘s career, making her a rare artist to transition from one genre to another full-time and enjoy even greater success than they’d achieved before. After she established herself as a country singer-songwriter, that was the moment she became a full-fledged pop star. Now she has released “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” the latest in her series of albums she has re-recorded in order to regain control of her music rights.
Several reviews came in the very day her new “1989” dropped on October 27, and the early consensus of critics has been overwhelmingly positive. Rachel Aroesti (The Guardian) writes that the album “provides a perfect excuse to revisit those monstrously accomplished tracks” and that it “also helps make sense of that decade in pop.” Angie Martoccio (Rolling Stone) adds that “now, in a post-rockist world, ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ shines a lot brighter.

It’s been five years since Janelle Monae‘s last studio album, “Dirty Computer.” Since then she has been nurturing a successful acting career that has included a critically acclaimed role in the comedy mystery “Glass Onion.” But she’s finally back on the music scene with her collection “The Age of Pleasure.” How does it measure up to her critically hailed past work?

Television shows are, inevitably, made up of parts. On the surface, there’s the great, overarching story that begins with the first shot and ends with the last. But, within that narrative, there are small parts: the series, and the episode. It is the smallest of these sub-divisions, the episode, that is most intriguing. A truly brilliant episode can bridge the gap between cinema and TV. It can refine the essence of the best shows into a single, self-contained moment. At its most potent, a perfect episode is like mainlining all the myriad ingredients of prestige television in a single sitting.
But great TV shows do not necessarily beget great episodes and, conversely, great episodes are not always the sign of a great show. The start of 2023 has been dominated by discussions about The Last of Us, a perfectly good series including one stunning episode. In it, two supporting characters...

Florence Pugh has opened up about working with Zach Braff in his new film A Good Person.
Pugh was in a relationship with the Scrubs star from 2019 to 2022, with the couple living together in New York for a period.
The Little Women actor revealed in August of last year that she and Braff had broken up.
During an appearance on Monday night’s (20 March) episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Pugh spoke about the film, and offered an insight into her post-breakup relationship with Braff.
Discussing A Good Person, Pugh agreed with Fallon’s suggestion that she was Braff’s “muse”, remarking: “He wrote it for me. I was his muse.
“There’s so much ease with reading a script when someone knows how you talk, and how far they can push you, and what you’re capable of doing.”

Jon Pointing is used to strangers making assumptions about him. “A lot of people presume I’m a bit of a lad,” says the actor, whose portrayal of a sensitive but boisterous geezer in Big Boys has just earned him a Best Comedy Performance nod from the Royal Television Society. “I can see that they’re thinking, ‘You look like you might have bullied me at school.’ And then they realise I’m actually sort of not that person. I’ve experienced it a lot, especially with my gay male friends. There’s this moment when they’re like, ‘Oh, you’re not a c***.’” The 36-year-old actor is grinning at me across a table, in an Irish caff in Lewisham that’s within bacon-sniffing distance of his flat. He does look like a lad, it must be said. His haircut is a short back and sides, long on top...

But the new releases haven’t stopped coming, whether that’s films, TV series, books, albums, art exhibitions or stage plays. To help parse the influx of options from across the arts, The Independent’s culture desk has assembled another edition of our weekly Arts Agenda.
Arts editor Jessie Thompson walks us through two of the best books to dive into this weekend, and raves about the new production of Guys and Dolls. Music editor Roisin O’Connor praises a career-best release from Welsh rock band Trampolene. Chief arts critic Mark Hudson recommends three exhibitions from three different UK cities, and features editor Adam White has nothing but good things to say about Pearl, the acclaimed prequel to last year’s pulpy slasher X. Several of the stars of Parks and Recreation have shared a reunion photograph to mark “Galentine’s Day”.
In the hit NBC sitcom, the celebration is held annually on the day before Valentine’s Day, having been conceived as an all-female get-together by Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler).
On Instagram, Rashida Jones and Aubrey Plaza – who played Ann Perkins and April Ludgate in Parks – shared an image of themselves alongside Poehler and Kathryn Hahn, who played political strategist Jen Barkley on the series.
“Happy Galentine’s Day,” the post was captioned.
Parks and Recreation originally ran from 2009 to 2015, and focused on the exploits of an eccentric government department in the town of Pawnee, Indiana.
The series did, in fact, briefly return for a reunion special in 2020, which was filmed remotely during the early days of the Covid pandemic.

Stephen Dorff has reiterated his thoughts about modern superhero movies and the planned remake of Blade, which he starred in, in 1998.
In 2021, Dorff went viral after telling The Independent’s Adam White that he was “embarrassed” for Scarlett Johansson for appearing in the “garbage” Marvel movie Black Widow.
In a new interview with The Daily Beast, Dorff said he wouldn’t revisit a comic book movie (Blade was based on a character from a series of Marvel comics in the 1970s) unless they were “more like when I started when we made Blade, or the few that have been decent over the years, like when Nolan did The Dark Knight and reinvented Batman from Tim Burton, who’s obviously a genius… when they were interesting”.
He continued: “But all this other garbage is just embarrassing, you know what I mean?”

HBO Max has announced the end to its shortlived Gossip Girl reboot after just two seasons, bringing joy and relief to many fans of the original.
Since the 2021 premiere of the sequel to the original six-season drama, which starred Blake Lively, Penn Badgley and Leighton Meester, many viewers have criticised it for “ruining a classic”.
The Independent’s Adam White wrote that the “boring” reboot “saps its juicy premise of all its fun” in his one-star review.
On Thursday (19 January), executive producer Joshua Safran – who also produced the original show – shared the news of the reboot’s cancellation, tweeting: “So here’s the goss: it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce Gossip Girl will not be continuing on HBO Max.”
In a follow-up post, Safran added: “We are currently looking for another home, but in this climate, that might prove an uphill battle, and so if this is the end,...

Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival isn’t messing around.
The official lineup has just been revealed and it’s a banger, starting off with a special screening of Evil Dead Rise!
In addition, they have several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky!
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Some of them introduce new, terrifying lore to the canon of suburban horror movies, some will worm around in your brain like thoughts you can’t shake, but all of them will make you...

Cate Blanchett’s admiration for filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is truly unmatched.
The already heavily accoladed Australian actor made her first appearance in a Del Toro movie in his 2021 thrilling drama Nightmare Alley, alongside her former Carol co-star Rooney Mara and Bradley Cooper.
But, it seems this leading role didn’t satiate Blanchett’s cravings for Del Toro’s creative genius. Instead, her appetite grew larger.
Blanchett now stars in his newest critically acclaimed stop-motion fantasy/musical, Pinocchio.
However, rather than giving her deep-sultry voice to, let’s say, Gepetto, she’s given it up altogether, lending it to Spazzatura, the squawking monkey, which, it must be noted, is the Italian translation of the word “garbage”.
In a behind-the-scenes video, the award-winning director explained how the “surprise” casting came about, recalling: “We were shooting Nightmare Alley. Cate Blanchett and I were having such a good time that she said, ‘You...

Dore Schary’s post-MGM personal production is a class act in every respect — Montgomery Clift, Robert Ryan and Myrna Loy are well cast in a story of intimate emotional cruelty. It’s from a play derived from Nathanael West’s soul-crushing novella, and despite the talent involved, it can’t shake the feeling of an overheated TV drama. The acting and characterizations are riveting. Young Dolores Hart is a beacon of light amid the gloom and misery, and in her first movie, Maureen Stapleton’s’ fireball of anxiety and malice all but steals the show. The fine cinematography is again by the great John Alton.

Announced earlier this summer, Australian writing-directing team Colin and Cameron Cairnes are next getting behind the camera for Late Night With the Devil, with David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad) starring as the host of a late-night talk show that goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms.
Late Night With the Devil follows the live broadcast of a late-night talk show in 1977, and producer Roy Lee tells Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Podcast in an interview that’ll be uploaded soon that it’s going to be a very unique kind of horror movie.
