If you saw the BBC’s trailer for the Winter Olympics, you’d be forgiven for thinking that all our athletes are out in Russia fighting to the death in a snowy sequel to The Hunger Games, as Charles Dance grimly narrates their last moments. In its attempt to give small children nightmares, that trailer is doing a stellar job, but this article will hopefully prove to you that the spirit of Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards lives on in Sochi this year.
Yep, the ‘other’ Olympics is actually kind of fun, and if you think it’s just sporty people messing about in the snow… you’re mostly right, but it is surprisingly entertaining. Check out our 15 reasons why you should be watching this year’s showcase of sexy ice dancing, sports which should come with a health warning, and British mediocrity right after the jump.

U.S. Olympic snowboarder Jamie Anderson, who took the gold in the women’s slopestyle event, has revealed that hook-up app Tinder is all the rage in the Olympic Village at Sochi 2014.
Tinder Used By Athletes At Winter Olympics
There’s been ample talk about the sex lives of Olympic athletes during the games, especially since the exposé in Espn came out in which swimmer Ryan Lochte guessed that 70-75% of the athletes seal the deal during the Games. This time around, in addition to checking each other out at the Olympic Village cafeteria, there’s hook up app Tinder.
"Tinder! Tinder in the Olympic Village is next level,” Anderson told Us Weekly. “It's all athletes! In the mountain village it's all athletes. It's hilarious. There are some cuties on there."
Although Anderson liked what she saw on the dating app, she claims that it threatened to be a distraction as she prepared to compete.

There is a certain level of pride you have in your home town or home state or home country when they're in a major athletic competition, but if you're doing TV commentary on it, you might want to curb your enthusiasm just a tad. But this past Sunday, BBC commentators watching the Olympic snowboarding event just couldn't contain themselves at the prospect UK snowboarder Jenny Jones would take home the gold.

The BBC has acknowledged that its Sochi Winter Games announce team got somewhat over-excited when Britain won its first-ever Olympic medal in a snow event this weekend. More than 300 viewers complained that the U.K. public broadcaster's commentators on the BBC Two network turned into cheerleaders and even cited the wrong medal, according to the Guardian. The complaints focused on the BBC's coverage of Jenny Jones' bronze medal win in the snowboarding slopestyle event on Sunday. How does an Olympian get ready before a big event? If you're Olympic medalist Jenny Jones, you get some quality Dowager Countess sass on. That's right, nothing but Downton Abbey for Jones. Jones, who took home the bronze medal for Great Britain in Slopestyle, said she calmed her nerves before the big day by watching the crossover hit drama. "Actually last night I watched Downton Abbey," Jones told press after medaling. Jamie Anderson took home the gold for the Us and said she has a different way of relaxing before the event. "I put on meditation music, burnt some sage, got a couple of candles going and was just trying to do a bit of yoga and meditate," Anderson said....

Jenny Jones may have taken home a bronze at the 2014 Winter Olympics, but the BBC commentary leading up to her big win was anything but medal-worthy. Such was the feeling of more than 300 viewers, who apparently complained about the coverage during the slopestyle finals on Sunday. It seems many folks at home watching didn't particularly care for the way commentators Ed Leigh, Tim Warwood and Jones' fellow British snowboarder Aimee Fuller (who had been knocked out of the event in the earlier stages) erupted into whoops and cheers when a competitor fell and secured the bronze medal for Jones, U.K.'s The Guardian reports. Over 300 people have complained about the BBC's commentary during the snowboarding slopestyle final at the Winter Olympics.
Jenny Jones became the first Briton to win an Olympic medal on the snow, earning a bronze at the Sochi event on Sunday (February 9).
The athlete's friend and fellow snowboarder Aimee Fuller was commentating on the final with Ed Leigh and Tim Warwood.
Fuller had taken part in the event, but did not reach the final, while Warwood is a former UK snowboarding champion.
One viewer complained about "the level of weeping, screaming, cheering when other competitors fell", reports BBC News.
Fuller was also heard cheering when Austria's Anna Glasser fell, meaning that Jones would win the bronze medal.
She said: "Are we supposed to do that? Probably not."
All three commentators were heard crying when it was confirmed that Jones had won a medal.
Warwood later tweeted: "Snowboarding just won the Olympics...

Jamie Anderson, the U.S. women’s snowboarding star, took home the gold in the Slopestyle event at the Sochi 2014 Olympics.
Jamie Anderson Wins Gold At Sochi
Anderson, 23, scored an impressive 95.25 out of 100 for her second run down the slopes on Sunday. Finland’s Enni Rukajarvi earned the silver with a score of 92.50, while Great Britain’s Jenny Jones won the bronze with 87.25 points.
Coming into her second run, Anderson knew she had to earn high marks. She’d only received 80.75 points for her first run, and after her second go down the slope, two more snowboarders would have a chance to top her. The pressure, though notable, wasn’t easy to discern as Anderson began her effort.
In the all-important 45-seconds, Anderson was flawless on the rails and landed two 720s with ease. Although the run guaranteed her a medal, she had to wait for the other two athletes...

A politician thinks Queen Elizabeth should move to a bungalow in Bromley. Green Party member Jenny Jones - who came third in the London Mayoral election last year - has suggested the British monarch should consider moving to a bungalow in Bromley or Sutton in south London, giving up her palatial homes. She wrote on Twitter: 'Have started a blog on why the Queen should live in a comfy bungalow in Bromley or Sutton. We expect too much of her. (sic)' The 63-year-old former Deputy Mayor of London, who resides in Southwark, south London, added: 'Am not sure yet who'll publish the blog.' The tweet received many responses, including one suggesting the queen should move into a retirement home. Jenny...

As a child of the 1980s, I raised myself on a steady diet of terrible zero-budget cable slasher flicks. I would scour the TV Guide to check out what was playing that night, and keep my fingers crossed that my parents would go to bed before my movie would start, so I could sneak into the living room and watch it (at a very, very low volume, lest it wake them.) Brinke Stevens, one of the three "original" scream queens (along with Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer) was a frequent star of these cheap little flicks. With over 150 titles to her credit, picking out even a handful of her most well-known credits is tough, but let's try. Slumber Party Massacre, Sorority Babes in the Slime Ball Bowl-a-Rama, and Haunting Fear all spring to mind. After over 30 years in the horror industry, she, Linnea, and Michelle finally have a documentary, Screaming in High Heels.

It’s difficult to pinpoint one woman who’s been able to come head to head with Weird Al Yankovic in the world of mainstream musical satire outside of Judy Tenuta (very good sentence, Eliot). But now, with the Delorean set to 1985, we can witness former talk show host Jenny Jones performing a stand-up comedy routine in which she sends up Gloria Gaynor‘s “I Will Survive” with joke-words about dating in the eighties (Score)! It’s basically a mix of two things that rule: Nora Dunn and Jan Hooks as the Sweeney Sisters and Horowitz & Spector of NYC cable access stalwart Stairway To Stardom. Jenny Jones, we hardly knew ye!
