Monica Barbaro made history as the first actress to portray the first female fighter pilot in Tom Cruise’s Top Gun 2. At the time a relatively unknown actor, the actress was astounded to be offered the role, given her limited experience in successful films or series. While she found the entire experience mesmerizing and enthralling, Barbaro later admitted that she had fabricated some details about herself to land the role.

Monica Barbaro has now starred alongside two action legends — Tom Cruise and Arnold Schwarzenegger — and the actress says her experience working with the two is “night and day.”
The 32-year-old starred in “Top Gun: Maverick”, in which she learned how to fly F-18 fighter jets just to star next to Cruise, and now, her latest project — Netflix’s new series “Fubar” — sees her portray Schwarzenegger’s CIA agent daughter, Emma.
“It’s funny, they could not be more opposite,” she told Variety. “Tom asks a lot of questions, and wants to understand every single piece of what’s going on. Arnold, if I started asking questions, he’d be like, ‘Better not to know.’ And that’s very trusting. It’s not to say that one approach is better than the other, but it’s just night and day.

Venerable action megastar Arnold Schwarzenegger is back with "Fubar" on Netflix, his first-ever television series (read the /Film review here). With the cancellation of "True Lies" on CBS after just one season, the eight-episode run of "Fubar" will be the closest thing to a quasi-sequel to James Cameron's 1994 action comedy hybrid that starred Schwarzenegger as a covert agent who keeps his spy adventures a secret from his suburban wife and teenage daughter. In "Fubar," Schwarzenegger plays Luke Brunner, an aging CIA operative on the verge of retiring when he finds out his daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) is also an undercover agent working on the same case.
In the series, the action takes a backseat to the relationship between Luke and Emma as they try to stay alive long enough to sort out their family issues and complete a mission that's suddenly grown a lot more complicated. "Fubar" could have...

Monica Barbaro is Hollywood’s Renaissance woman.
She learned how to fly F-18 fighter jets to star alongside Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick.” In 2021, she played a mother in Ricky D’Ambrose’s autobiographical film “The Cathedral.” Currently, she’s taking vocal and guitar lessons to prepare for her role as Joan Baez alongside Timothée Chalamet in the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown.” And before she even began working as an actor, she was a ballerina studying dance at Tisch School of the Arts.
Now, the 32-year-old is reflecting on her most recent endeavor, starring alongside terminating action-legend Arnold Schwarzenegger in their new Netflix series “Fubar,” in which she plays his hard-hitting CIA agent daughter Emma.
Barbaro spoke with Variety about what it was like making the show, working with the Austrian muscleman and how acting, like ballet, is keeping her on her toes.

The Arnold Schwarzenegger Netflix spy comedy “Fubar” starts out so unfettered by reality that it holds real promise.
Luke Brunner, the CIA operative played by Schwarzenegger, who is 75, is described as being 65. He is on the eve of retirement when they pull him back in to infiltrate the Guyana compound of arms dealer Boro (Gabriel Luna), a guy so brutal that he kills an associate on stage at an outdoor party and orders the blood-splattered band to keep playing.
Also in Guyana is Luke’s do-gooder daughter, Emma. Unbeknownst to her father, she is also a CIA operative and so deeply embedded in Boro’s world that she has become his favorite fight-club competitor.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger first announced his new TV series Fubar, he sold it as “another big action-comedy like True Lies.” There’s just one problem with that statement: True Lies was actually good. Fubar (now streaming on Netflix) tries to recapture Arnie’s glory days as an action movie hero with a big-budget, explosion-filled tale of international espionage. But based on the first three episodes, Fubar is unfortunately just a very pale True Lies imitation: a parade of meaningless violence and flaccid one-liners that pairs ludicrous action scenes with hacky comedy. It’s a mess — and not even an entertaining one,...

Well, with all projects that soar high, one inevitably crashes back down to Earth.

During the mythical Golden Age of Hollywood, the romantic-comedy genre could be relied upon as a consistently entertaining, star-studded, and profitable performer at the box office, year in and year out. We've fallen quite a long way in the years since despite some recent breakthrough hits like "Crazy Rich Asians" or last year's double-whammy of "The Lost City" and "Ticket to Paradise." Instead of studios going out of their way to court genuine movie stars and put their charisma and charm on display for moviegoing audiences to enjoy vicariously, we've ended up in a place where those once-ubiquitous theatrical features instead struggle to justify their existence ... if they even make it to theaters at all.
That brings us to "At Midnight." On the surface, it has all the makings of a much-needed throwback date night at the movies, in the vein of "Roman Holiday" before it (which gets a shout-out...

Writer-director Jonah Feingold’s “At Midnight” sadly isn’t so much concerned with reinvention as it is with following a formula set by its cinematic forbearers. This spin on “Notting Hill” and “Roman Holiday” (the latter is channeled and referenced throughout) shows a silver screen superstar and a hotel employee falling in love and giving their lives the push they need to achieve their dreams. Although it’s tempting not to mess with perfection, innovation through tweaks to the narrative and characters would’ve changed this Paramount Plus feature from expected to extraordinary.
Sophie (Monica Barbaro) is used to saving the world on screen, starring in a blockbuster superhero franchise. Ironically, she can’t manage to save herself in real life, and gets little recognition from anyone but her beloved, beleaguered manager Chris (Casey Thomas Brown) and her sassy, unemployed best friend Rachel (Catherine Cohen). Adam (Anders Holm), Sophie’s...

Love is in the air at Paramount+ this Valentine’s Day season as the streamer prepares to debut its new rom-com At Midnight starring Top Gun: Maverick‘s Monica Barbaro and Diego Boneta. Ahead of the movie’s Friday, February 10 debut, Barbaro and Boneta sat down with TV Insider’s Damian Holbrook at the Winter 2023 Television Critics Association Press Tour to discuss the film. At Midnight tells the story of an actress who following a breakup with her costar begins shooting a new movie in Mexico. There, she meets an ambitious hotel manager with whom she connects and they begin meeting up at midnight. (Credit: Camila Jurado/Paramount + © 2022 Viacom International Inc. Chemistry reads were a little tough to collaborate on when casting the film amid the Covid pandemic. “No, we’d never met,...

The meet-cute in “Top Gun: Maverick” alum Monica Barbaro’s new romantic comedy “At Midnight” isn’t exactly smooth. Diego Boneta’s character Alejandro, a hotel manager, does a sweep of Barbaro’s character Sophie’s room before she arrives and sees that there are no towels. So Alejandro runs off to get some, but accidentally walks in on a fully naked Sophie who’s just taken a shower.
“I kept having to slam this door back to stop him from coming in and I had the biggest bruises on my back and my butt for like the majority of our filming process that they then had to keep covering up when I was wearing bikinis and crop tops and things,” Barbaro told TheWrap. “I didn’t realize it was a stunt, I guess. I just kept slamming the door out of sheer terror of [Diego] probably actually seeing me naked,...

The "Top Gun: Maverick" cast celebrated their huge movie at the Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Jay Ellis, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, and Lewis Pullman all showed out at the award ceremony, smiling together on the red carpet and inside the ceremony.
Ellis's date for the evening was his wife, Nina Senicar. The couple, who started dating back in 2015, tied the knot in July 2022. Powell attended the ceremony with his girlfriend, Gigi Paris. Barbaro, Ramirez, and Pullman all seemed to be attending solo but posed together on the carpet.
"Top Gun: Maverick" is nominated for best motion picture, drama, and best original song at the ceremony. The film - which had been massively delayed because of Covid-19 - was a box office smash, making almost 1.5 billion worldwide, and has been a streaming sensation since it debuted on Paramount+ in December. Diego Boneta is taking his career in a new direction following his successful turn in Luis Miguel: La Series with the Paramount+ romantic comedy, At Midnight, premiering February 10.
“You won’t hear me sing but you’ll see me dance with my co-star Monica Barbaro,” Boneta said during the film’s TCA presentation on Monday. “We wanted to do something different. Luis Miguel was a big part of my life these past 5 years and it was an amazing experience, At Midnight is its own thing. It’s a love letter to Mexico, as well. There aren’t enough rom-coms shot there in the same vein as Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Midnight in Paris. Mexico is a character in this film and you’ll see it through the eyes of our director Jonah (Feingold).”
At Midnight centers around Alejandro (Boneta), an ambitious hotel manager, and Sophie (Barbaro) a movie star navigating the politics of Hollywood.

Today, Paramount+ has released a new trailer for the romantic comedy "At Midnight." The film stars Monica Barbaro ("Top Gun: Maverick") as a young movie star named Sophie who catches her actor boyfriend Adam (Anders Holm from "Workaholics") cheating while they shoot a film. He's the big name, and she isn't, so keeping this quiet is important for her career. While she nurses a broken heart, she (quite literally) runs into the hotel manager Alejandro (Diego Boneta from "Father of the Bride"), and sparks begin to fly.
To keep it all quiet, as the cast resides at Alejandro's hotel, Sophie and Alejandro secretly meet at midnight for dates. Of course, they begin falling for each other, and of course, the old flame starts looking to get back together. It's coming out on the streaming service just in time for Valentine's Day from writer/director Jonah Feingold. It also stars Whitney Cummings...

During its presentation at the Television Critics Association’s 2023 winter press tour, Paramount+ debuted new teaser art for the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which premieres on Feb. 16. During the panel about the series however, the team behind the series didn’t seem so sure that this would be the end.
“Who knows?” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said when asked about the ending of the series, with star Patrick Stewart saying that if the show could “maintain the work quality” of the first three seasons, he would be open to reappearing. He also noted that the storylines of the final season intentionally “leave doors open.”
The series stars Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, who he played for seven seasons of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd also star.

It would be reductive to say podcasts are having a moment right now. The industry, which is expected to generate 4 billion in revenue by 2024, can trace its roots back to the days of radio, when creators were making podcasts long before Ben Hammersley coined the name. But the format’s impact and moneymaking potential have arguably never been higher, as evidenced by the entry of new megawatt voices like Meghan Markle, whose Archetypes dominated the charts shortly after launch. For this year’s inaugural Podcast Power Players list, THR examined the medium’s current landscape, taking reach and influence into account to determine the leading dealmakers and front-facing creatives pushing the industry forward. — J. With "Top Gun: Maverick" continuing to deliver at the box office, it's clear the film is far more than your garden variety dad flick. It's, at the risk of hyperbolizing, kind of a flawless film, one that exceeds its "dudes going fast in planes" conceit. Among other things, it's reignited an interest in call signs, the names that pilots adopt for their exploits in the air. A call sign can spring from a disparaging nickname or a notorious reputation, or it could speak to a pilot's particular skill and style.
"Maverick" introduced a handful of new call signs to the world of the films, and if you're a "Top Gun" die-hard, you've probably wondered how each character got their specific call sign. Fortunately, most of the "Maverick" cast has revealed a bit about their respective monikers, especially those that started out with entirely different ones. Let's break down each of...

As Ray Donovan, Liev Schreiber is one of premium cable’s best-known fixers — but is he funny?
If you tuned out of this weekend’s Saturday Night Live following a nervous Schreiber’s awkward opening monologue, you missed what was easily the strongest episode of the still-young season. During an off night, the fact that Schreiber felt out of his element would have been a detriment to the proceedings, but this week it worked in the show’s favor, bringing a very particular energy to a series of increasingly weird skits. And while neither is highlighted below, both the cold...
