Originally released 64 years ago (!) and a Martin Scorsese favourite, Peeping Tom has already had a UK release from StudioCanal, with a print restored in association with The Film Foundation and the BFI National Archive; and now comes another release, this time in the US courtesy of the Criterion Collection.
My immediate reaction, almost from the opening scene is that for a film that was made so long ago, it has aged extremely well and I imagine it might have seemed quite shocking at the time.
That does seem to be the case as “on its initial release in 1960, Peeping Tom received a savage reception from critics who were dismayed by its controversial subject matter and the sympathy it seems to engender for its murderous protagonist.

A classic that predates the slasher movie by a decade and played a hugely influential role on the sub-genre, Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom (1960) returns to The Criterion Collection.
The film hits Criterion Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on May 14, 2024.
Criterion announces today, “Having brought British cinema into exalted realms of fantasy and imagination, Michael Powell took a dark detour into obsession, voyeurism, and violence with this groundbreaking metacinematic investigation into the mechanics of fear.
“Armed with his killer camera, photographer and filmmaker Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm) unleashes the traumas of his childhood by murdering women and recording their deaths—until he falls for his downstairs neighbor, and finds himself struggling against his dark compulsions. Received with revulsion upon its release only to be reclaimed as a masterpiece, the endlessly analyzed, still-shocking Peeping Tom dares viewers to confront their own relationship to the violence on-screen.”

A jewellery company once ran a Christmas ad campaign featuring glitzy earrings and diamond necklaces accompanied by the scornful slogan “Or you could get her book tokens”.
Pricks.
Granted, jewels are easier to sew into hemlines when fleeing your country, opals may protect against curses, and a diamond ring can be used to scratch a threatening message onto a mirror hanging in your enemy’s home, but in every other way – books win out.
Especially the ones below, newly published in 2023 and chosen as personal highlights by Den of Geek’s writers. Maybe find a new favourite and recommend us your picks below.

The three films included on the Criterion Collection’s Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers collectively suggest a miniature narrative of Browning’s evolution as a filmmaker. Though this two-disc set offers but a dip of the toe into Browning’s work, it’s governed by a persuasive through line. Here we get a film, 1925’s The Mystic, that’s rich in promise and less personal than the other two, one a perverse masterwork, 1927’s The Unknown, that’s criminally underseen by contemporary audiences, and the other a cult classic, 1932’s Freaks, that’s too often discussed in terms of its notoriety. Watching these films together offers a sketch of an artist’s sensibility reaching fruition, as a fine-grained empathy rises to the fore.
Browning’s affinity for outcasts has been well-documented and is discussed at length in the supplements included with this set, particularly in a new interview with author...

Movie star John Wayne and actor Marlene Dietrich had quite a history that forever links them together. However, there were some intriguing encounters between the pair that speak to the way that their relationship developed. Wayne once publicly steered clear of Dietrich after she shouted at him, “Mommy wants that for Christmas.”

More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

There are few events movie fans look forward to quite like the Barnes & Noble 50 off Criterion Collection sale. It happens twice a year – once in July and again in November – and it’s a perfect opportunity for physical media enthusiasts to acquire some of the very best Blu-rays, loaded with special features and anchored by exemplary video and sound. Sure, the Christmas holiday might be the wonderful time of the year. But Criterion sale time at Barnes & Noble is a close second for those of us still collecting physical media.
This year, there are plenty of amazing titles to choose from and we thought we’d highlight a handful if you’re having trouble narrowing down what to get. These are all titles that have come out since the last sale (in November 2021) and include some that are coming out towards the end of July, when the sale ends.

Sophia Coppola’s debut feature, The Virgin Suicides, has been given the 4K restoration treatment by the discerning folks at The Criterion Collection. Released last week here in North America, this release also comes with a combo Blu-ray with supplements and a legacy essay from novelist and screenwriter Megan Abbott. I saw the film when it had its theatrical run in 1999. Between now and then, I’m glad to report that Coppola’s adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ debut novel has lost exactly none of its effectiveness. As the story goes, the five teenage Lisbon girls reject their home imprisonment, upper class society, and even their lives. The Virgin Suicides is a mid-1970s snapshot of girls trying to make sense of the cards they’ve been dealt, as well...

It’s the time of Peak TV! There’s TV everywhere! You can’t shake a stick without hitting another TV show on another streamer! TV! TV! TV!
All that’s true — until it’s not.
The sheer quantity of TV does not always equate to quality TV winning out, and each year, there are a number of worthy shows that don’t reach whatever mystical threshold television executives have ascertained is required to keep a project in production. This is even more true this year, with the business pressures created by the pandemic often — and some cynics would argue, conveniently — cited as the reason for cancellation.
Here, IndieWire lists, in alphabetical order, the year’s shows that were canceled too soon. They’re gone — but not forgotten, thanks to the afterlife they could receive on those same streaming outlets that didn’t want to fund new episodes. As it turns out,...

Exclusive: Novelist-turned-tv writer Megan Abbott is setting up her latest television project after eOne snapped up the rights to her upcoming book The Turnout.
The Turnout is set in the hothouse world of a ballet school led by the Durant sisters, Dara and Marie, and Dara’s husband Charlie. Their connection is intense, forged by a glamorous but troubled family history. But after they hire Derek, a charismatic, possibly shady contractor to renovate the studio, Marie throws herself into an intense affair with him that threatens their tight bonds and brings forward family secrets until an act of violence overturns everything.
The book is set to be released in the summer of 2021, as one of publisher Putnam’s lead fiction titles for next year. The Hasbro-owned Sharp Objects producer pre-emptively picked up the rights and will develop an adaptation. The Turnout is the first in a three-book deal for Abbott and Putnam.

Looking back at some of my favorite new characters from the past year of television, I realized with a burst of pleasant surprise that many of them are, in fact, teenage girls.
For as much as TV has been fascinated by them, it has been rarely good at portraying them with anything approaching nuance. On-screen, they’re overwhelmingly either very silly as the butt of everyone else’s derisive jokes, or alarmingly mature as temptress sirens for wayward men. The truth of teenagers hanging somewhere between childhood and adulthood constantly gets lost as writers push them toward one extreme or the other. In the past year, though, more shows centering teen girls leaned into that exact “not a girl, not yet a woman” dichotomy — and came out richer for it.

There will not be a second season of USA drama series Dare Me. USA Network has opted to cancel the series, from Ucp and Peter Berg and Michael Lombardo’s Film 44, after one season, Deadline has confirmed. We hear Ucp will be shopping the series to other outlets.
Dare Me premiered to stellar reviews. Co-produced by Netflix, the series began an international run on the streamer last month, and has a second window run on Netflix in the U.S.
Based on the novel by Megan Abbott, who serves as writer and executive producer along with Gina Fattore, Dare Me is described as an unflinching exploration of teen angst, jealousy, loyalty and the dynamics of power in a small Midwestern town.
The series dove into the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading. It follows the fraught relationship between two best friends after a new coach arrives to bring their team to prominence.
Dare Me premiered to stellar reviews. Co-produced by Netflix, the series began an international run on the streamer last month, and has a second window run on Netflix in the U.S.

USA Network is kicking another scripted original to the curb.
Dare Me is the latest casualty, with the network deciding against renewing the cheerleader drama for a second season.
THR first reported the news.
Dare Me Season 1 was a bust out of the gate for the network, and it ultimately averaged 402,000 viewers and a 0.13 demo in the most recent live + same day metrics.
It is tied with Treadstone as the network's lowest-rated series, meaning that it never did stand much of a chance at renewal.
The series was not exactly on brand for USA Network, so the lack of viewer interest is hardly surprising.

Netflix seems to have found its niche. In the films department, the streamer has invested heavily of late in prestige content from some of Hollywood’s most respected minds, resulting in awards-friendly (if not award-winning) output like Marriage Story, The Irishman and The Two Popes.
The TV department has different priorities. Bingeable true crime documentaries and soapy dramas fill the site’s television slate, driving clicks and social media conversation often with markedly less investment. Think Locke & Key, Riverdale, You.
Dare Me is the quintessential new addition to that latter group. A ten-part series which first aired in the States on the USA Network late last year, joining Netflix internationally March 20, the show is a claustrophobic and occasionally bloody look at the always-competitive dynamic of high school teens. Cutthroat is the key word. Spoken in ominous voiceover, the show’s first line – “There’s something dangerous about the boredom of...

“Dare Me” was always going to end its first season with a surprise. Even after a midseason episode that unexpectedly switched up the show’s narrative format and the appearance of a dead body a few weeks later, “Dare Me” saved one of its most shocking twists for last.
After guiding Addy (Herizen Guardiola) through the discovery of Will’s body, the season’s farewell moments hint at the idea that Colette (Willa Fitzgerald) knew more about the circumstances of the Army recruiter’s death than she previously let on. When Addy confronts her about a nagging detail surrounding her alibi, the audience sees a flashback to that fateful night, indicating that both Coach Colette and her husband might know how and when Will died.

Whether you read the book or just tuned in for the series, there’s a pervasive sense of dread that runs through “Dare Me.” In the opening episodes, there’s a cloud of sorts that hangs over the lives of the central trio of women at the heart of the USA series, even if it’s one that’s never fully articulated.
Well, at the close of Episode 7, the audience finally gets to see the seismic event that’s been hinted at in ways both subtle and overt. After slowly working into the lives of both Addy Hanlon (Herizen Guardiola) and her cheer coach Colette French (Willa Fitzgerald) — much to the objections of Addy’s best friend Beth (Marlo Kelly) — military recruiter Will Mosley (Zach Roerig) is found dead of a gunshot wound.

The opening of each episode of “Dare Me” is its own pearl, presenting the audience with a mystifying piece of visual information that hints at where things might be heading. In the case of Episode 5, that image is a floating tooth, drifting — as some of the series central characters are, too. Unsettling in isolation and horrific in context, it’s just one of the many storytelling levels that this USA series has discovered for itself.
“I think we felt freer to be more abstract and surreal as it goes,” series co-creator and novel author Megan Abbott told IndieWire. “This show has gone somewhat into this sort of unconscious state, with dreams and the different POVs. It gives you a little more freedom to play. We’re all David Lynch fans among the room and the crew and everybody, so we would often talk about our David Lynch moment.

I love a good read about teen jealousy, betrayal, and the ugly extremes people will go to in order to rise to the top - especially one that lays bare the insular world of high school cheerleaders. This is why I found Dare Me - the 2012 critically acclaimed novel by Megan Abbott that's been adapted as a 10-episode series on USA - so compelling. If you're a fan of Bring It On, I should warn you that Dare Me is way less campy and much more dark and twisty. It's a subversive story about the power dynamics in female friendships, described by USA as: "part coming-of-age story, part small-town drama, part murder mystery."
Did I forget to mention that someone dies in this book? Someone dies, you guys. Like I said, it's a pretty dark read. I devoured Dare Me in one sitting a few years ago, so I already know who committed the crime.

Even before the blood starts flowing, “Dare Me” is a show dripping with the anxiety of potential danger. Its main characters are members and leaders of a high school cheerleading squad, and whenever they or one of their cohorts go flying through the air, a safe landing is never guaranteed. Watching these aerial maneuvers against a sea of psychological chaos is the contrast that not only gives this USA series its anxiety, but its artistry. It’s the kind of slow-churn vice grip you’d expect from a show based on Megan Abbott’s novel of the same name, in which Addy Hanlon relates the circumstances surrounding a shocking event that rumbles the foundation of her Midwestern town.
Abbott’s book was told through Addy’s eyes and ears. “Dare Me” the series builds out the rest of the perspectives of those that the book captures just in overheard conversations and merely hinted at characters.

When your job entails watching several new shows a week, overlapping themes are inevitable. Still, similarities between shows are rarely as stark as those between the first seasons of Netflix’s “Spinning Out” (out Jan. 2) and USA’s “Dare Me” (which premiered Dec. 20). Both dramas focus on teen girls as restless as they are talented, a combination that serves them well in their respective competitive sports — figure skating for “Spinning Out,” cheerleading for “Dare Me” — and have them scrambling to survive in their daily lives. Both examine motherhood, and how adults can blur the lines in their relationships to the teenagers in their care to devastating effect. Both are pulpy and propulsive as they set their bleeding hearts on a silver platter for the audience to eat up. And yet,
“Spinning Out,” from Samantha Stratton, follows a family of three women, each determined, stubborn, and skilled in her own way.

A lot can change in a few short years. Technology moves quickly, and so do colloquialisms. But when Megan Abbott and Gina Fattore were adapting Abbott’s 2012 novel “Dare Me” for a 2019 audience, they made it a point to focus more on the universality of a coming-of-age drama and how sometimes one relationship can change everything.
“We were always much more interested in the ‘internalities’ of adolescence, rather than the things that technology or social media change. You date yourself so quickly if you focus too much [on the latter], so we really tried to focus on the elements of being a young woman with feelings of yearning, the desire for more experience, that sense of wanting things that are just beyond your reach, and the feeling that you have power but also being thrown into situations where you’re suddenly aware of your powerlessness,” Abbott tells Variety.

Midway through Dare Me, a new USA drama set in the world of high school cheerleading, we see local cheer coach Colette French (Willa Fitzgerald) watching the classic Forties film noir Double Indemnity, based on the novel by James M. Cain. The scene is less interested in revealing something about the enigmatic Colette than it is in winking at the influences of Megan Abbott, who adapted her own novel for television. Abbott’s specialty has long been recreating the grimy, hopeless, and traditionally male experience of noir in unapologetically female contexts.

After being nominated for an Oscar for her short film “New Boy” in 2007, Steph Green has consistently carved out a space for herself as a sought-out small-screen director. This year alone she has helmed high-profile episodes of equally important new series, including the Looking Glass (Tim Blake Nelson) backstory chapter of HBO’s “Watchmen” adaptation and the tone-setting premiere of Showtime’s “The L Word: Generation Q” continuation series. Up next for Green is USA’s adaptation of “Dare Me.”

Peter Berg’s Film 44 To Produce Limited Series ‘Amity And Prosperity’ Based On Pulitzer-Winning Book
Peter Berg and Michael Lombardo’s Film 44 is set to produce a limited series based on Eliza Griswold’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America. Kristina Lauren Anderson, who is adapting Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist for TriStar and a screenplay based on Swan Lake for Universal, has been tapped to write.
The book, published last year, is an exposé on how fracking shattered the rural Pennsylvania town of Amity and how one lifelong resident, Stacey Haney, brought the story into the national spotlight. The paperback edition hits stands tomorrow.
Haney, a lifelong resident of Amity, was struggling to support her children when the fracking boom came to town. Like most of her neighbors, she saw the energy companies’ payments as a windfall. According to TorontoFilm.Net, the Netflix/USA Network TV mystery series "Dare Me", based on the 2012 'cheerleading' novel by Megan Abbott, starts 15 weeks of filming April 22, 2019 in Toronto:
"...inspired by the competitive world of American High School sports cheerleading, 'Dare Me' follows 'Addy' and her manipulative childhood friend Beth, a cheerleading coach, who has always been the leader with Addy her faithful lieutenant.
"Then when a new 'Coach' arrives, things change quickly and very soon Beth and Addy engage in a battle of wills. Addy adores the new 'Coach' and is always willing to do her bidding, which in turn fuels Beth's jealousy. When the other team members gather at Coach's house for drinking sessions, Beth does not go there, but always watches, waiting for her moment.
"The girls are pushed to physical and psychological extremes as they vie for the best position on the team. Injury is just one wobble away.
